[Q] Data connection management app on Lollipop - Android General

Hi guys,
on KitKat I used this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.thinksoft.ipulse&hl=it
for manage my data connection. When screen is off, it stops data connection and every x minutes automatically turn it on for x minutes and turn it off data again. I use this because at work I have a very poor signal and it helps me to save battery life.
Now, I see that isn't compatible with lollipop yet, so is there a similar app that work with lollipop?
I cannot find anything, is the main reason that stop me upgraditig to Lollipop.
Thanks!

No Wifi and no data, phone will hang?

Hi,
This is a newbie question. I don't have a data plan. If I turn off Wifi (and background data sync is off too), the phone will hang randomly in 4 or 5 hours (till the battery is dead, or I remove and reinsert the battery). I am assuming it's some app (maybe a weather widget or something else) that keeps trying to connect to some server and hangs the phone. Do I have this right? It doesn't happen if Wifi is on. Is this a common issue with android?
If that is it, is there a simple solution? I would like a simple solution such as no app/widget can attempt internet connection once I turn off wifi.
thanks
Rooting it a d installing Droidwall (firewall) fixed my issues.

Turning wifi off when screen is off

Is there a tool or app that will turn wifi (and perhaps data) off when the phone display is not on?
My wifi is using a lot of battery.
Thanks.
When I read this, my first thought was this function in the Android Wifi settings. Not entirely sure if this will solve your problem, but give it a try and see if it helps.
From Google's Support site for Android, under "Advanced Wifi Settings" (It's for Android One, but still applies):
Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep: Touch to choose how your device handles Wi-Fi when it's asleep. You can choose to keep Wi-Fi on all the time, only if your device is charging, or turn it off completely. If you turn Wi-Fi off, you may increase the amount of mobile data you use.

Since I'm a new user, I can't post the actual URL, but here's the Google Support destination:

You are correct. It is in android settings under advanced in wifi.
Thanks.
LeanDroid
I liked LeanDroid. I used to get battery for more than 24 hours.
But with Lollipop, it needs root access.
Rooting is not easy with Lollipop
Hence, I am also stuck like you
Waiting for 5.01 version hoping to get some fixes.
Drain with my phone is not just WiFi Mobile network too and generally the green bar slopes down.
Kitkat and LeanDroid were good
You can still try LeanDroid

1. Flash custom recovery
2. Flash latest SuperSU
and you have root access.
thanks
Thanks
Thanks. That helped me too.
wifi off, when screen is off
after updating to lollipop (stock), i am unable to connect to my college wifi. but i could use my wifi at home. now after few days my wifi is going off, when the screen goes to sleep. what kind of a problem is this ? when can the nexus 5 users get 5.0.1 update ?

[Q] [Help] Wifi drains battery even though turned off (Lollipop)

Hi everyone,
I am new here, and would like some help with my Nexus 5.
It is running stock rom and everything, Android 5.0.1 LRX22C
I am still setting up, so still using my old phone while I get all the mandatory apps on before i switch my SIM over.
I realised that battery seems to be draining rather quickly even it spends most of its time on just Wifi right beside the router. Cellular connection is not on. So one day I decided to turn it to airplane mode and see what happens.
As you can see from the attachment, WiFi was on all the time even though the phone was on airplane mode. I believe this is the cause of the battery drain. I did not turn WiFi on.
"Scanning always available" was turned off, and the top battery drainer is "Android system", but at only 1%.
(The screenshot was only taken after I reconnected Wifi and downloaded GSam, that explains the notifications.)
Does anyone know the cause of this? I'd prefer if I do not need to factory reset the phone as I am pretty much done setting up everything and I don't want to have to do it all again.
Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks!
If you go to 'Advanced' there should be an option called 'Keep WIFI on during sleep', click there and then click 'Never' or 'Only when plugged in'. Good luck.
I too had the same problem when i updated to lollipop but after some days of usage i found that in wifi under advance there was a new option scanning always available which was turn on. What this setting do is even if ur wifi is off the app can scan for wifi signals for the location. So if u want to keep ur wifi off just turn off that setting.
I already had it turned off, but the battery settings still reports WiFi as on. Weird thing is GSam says my WiFi is off, so I'm not sure what is the problem now.
It might be the Android System, reporting it uses even more battery than my screen now.

I read on Elevate and xda only today, people owning M8 and M9 have seen a similar issue too last day. But I just saw my phone, and it's not there. I had patches of white too, for times when I wasn't on a wifi network. Try checking using a battery monitor app like GSAM, whether wifi is always on or not.
Battery history shows wifi is alaways on
Gsam app show wifi is not stwiched on at all. But Battery history shows wifi is on all the time. Problems that i m facing after lollipop update phone tends to heat more and battery life has also been degraded. So, where exactly problem is?

Well, after any software update, it's recommended to wipe your phone's cache. Or software reset the phone. Then give the OS a few days to settle. I wiped the cache, and my battery life has been at par with on Kitkat, and even better standby times. And no heating problems. The performance has only improved after Lollipop. Try doing one of these, or check on GSAM what's eating up the battery.

do you use any IM apps like Viber etc? please check its wi-fi policy settings, it seems that it set to always on, try to change it and then reboot device
Viber was the culprit
Thanks man!
Just by changing wifi settings in wifi solved the problem like magic.
I am facing the same problem. I do not have viber installed on my phone.
I've set everything to off just as stated by the OP:
Here's how it goes with my E8:
1. Fresh start of the phone, and I don't find the traces of Wi-Fi.
2. Once Wi-Fi is on either for using internet/ShareIt/others, it keeps showing as "On" in Battery history even if it is turned "Off".
3. Only solution is to restart the phone.
Please advise guys!
Thanks,
Vinay

I've found a way around it.
Turned on Wi-Fi and let the phone connect to a hotspot and turned it off after a few seconds.
The Wi-Fi radio completely turned off.
Guess, after using ShareIt, the app didn't turn it off the Wi-Fi properly.

Data on when on wifi

Hi,
Just wanted to ask: Is there a significant difference in battery usage with the data on while on WiFi? I had read somewhere that it's best to turn off data when on wifi so that the radio doesn't keep looking for 4g signals unnecessarily thus saving battery. Has anyone tested this? But, generally, I wanted if this theory is just a hoax or if there's some meat to it!
Hoax. WiFi uses more energy than data
My phone doesn't use LTE/mobile data when WiFi is working. When I turn WiFi off, it takes a second to reconnect to mobile data network and show the icon up top. I assume it's not working in conjunction, I also believe it won't affect battery life one way or another.
If you have a very poor signal, it will most likely be searching. However turning off data won't stop this (at least I don't think it will)

Cool thanks..
I don't know if turning data off will result in battery savings but I have been using Tasker to automatically turn my data off when on WiFi for the longest time now.
