I have an annoying problem that stems from the fact that my device renamed my memorycard from "memorycard" to "memorycard2".
I run a Swedish device, but I will try to rename to the best of my abilities.
I have a Polaris with the standard ROM, but this problem is more general in nature. I synced my memorycard with the camera, so that the photos I take are put on the card. I could then view my photos in the "camera album" software. Then I removed the card and after replacing it, it got the new name "memorycard2".
I still have the DCIM folder on the memorycard and the photos are still stored on the card in that folder. But I can't view them since they aren't loaded into the software. All the new photos aren't detected either.
I can still use the file explorer or the software called "photos and videos", but it's still a lot of work for a simple task.
So is there a way to A)get the software to load the picture already on the card and/or B)re-detect the folder so that the new pictures at least gets loaded in the software?
Thanks in advance!
Small bumb, sorry for that but it's an annoying problem.
Have tried a few trick myself, like renaming the DCIM folder in order to force the phone to create a new one. It worked, but "photo album" will still not show the pictures...
So please, help me if you can! As of now it's a bit hard to use the phone as a camera.

UPDATE:
Problem solved! In the event any other readers have the same issue, I have outlined how I solved the problem. Note that the discussion which follows was synthesized from behavior and may not be 100% accurate...but is close and sufficiently accurate to solve the problem.
The issue was actually caused by my deleting the thumbnails which are located in: /mnt/sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails. The contents of this folder are created and maintained by the"Gallery" app. As new content is discovered by the, "Mediascanner" app, the Gallery app updates the .thumbnails folder (database & thumbnails).
The solution of the problem then appeared to be recreation of the contents of the, .thumbnails folder. This, presumably, could be done by forcing the Gallery app to recreate the contents based on information provided by Mediascanner. Simple re-installation of the Gallery app then should do it. The Gallery app, however, is actually stored in the ROM, therefore not directly accessible to reinstall. Titanium Backup creates a copy of all apps, irrespective of location, and theoretically could be used to restore the Gallery app thereby simulating an initial installation which would result in creation of the thumbnails and controlling database (contents of the .thumbnails folder).
This approach seemed reasonable and was executed. The result was recreation of the .thumbnails folder, and update of the Gallery app. As a last, "clean up" step, I went to the Application section in Settings and deleted the updates thereby returning the app to its original state. Problem solved. Hope this is of benefit to anyone having a similar problem

ORIGINAL POST:
I copied images (JPEG) from the external micro SD to the internal SD card. I erroneously used the, ".foldername" to prevent display of some media. The result was that thumbnails from every folder were discovered by MediaScanner and displayed.
I searched for (not exactly knowing what I was looking for) the source of the thumbnails, deleted and then restored some files. The result of this "folly" was the disappearance of all thumbnails.
I obtained the, "Rescan Media" app and forced MediaScanner to rescan; no cigar!
Despite all efforts I have been unable to restore the thumbnails in, "Gallery". The images are on the internal SD card but have no thumbnail pointers.
I am at the point of doing a factory reset now but wanted to put this issue on the air before that drastic move.
If anyone has a solution, I would appreciate your input.
N.B. Once resolved, I will use, ".nomedia" to prevent media display.
Thanks in advance!

Inside the folder DCIM /.thumbnails there is a file .Thumbdata3 of 710MB!
I tried to delete it but it always returns the same size.
I also tried to delete all the photos from the DCIM folder but nothing has changed!
How is it that the file has a size so big?

That's probably the thumbnail data for your pictures. I'm assuming you have quite a few...?
I deleted all the images.
The folder .thumbnails no contains preview as I deleted everything.
There remains only the file to 711 MB

As the first reply already stated, this is a thumbnail file that is generated on the basis of all pictures on your device. Deleting all thumbnails doesn't really help, because the thumbnail cache will regenerate itself. If you want to diminish it in terms of size, you'll have to remove the actual pictures on your device (be it wallpapers, family pictures, Reddit downloads or porn). Only that will lessen the numbers of thumbnails generated and thus the size of this file.
As I said I deleted all the real pictures and not just the thumbnails!
When I open the gallery there is no picture or video!
I also raised the MicroSD to make sure there were no photographs or video to generate thumbnails.
Yes, I see what you mean. I have two, each about 600 Mb, one from 08/07/2012 and one from 19/10/2012. These appear to be the Thumbnail files from the media players.. So until you clear the librarycache from those, they'll keep reappearing.
I also had two files, then deleting all reappeared only one from 711MB!
You have lots of photos and videos?

About 40gb internal, and another 40ish on SD's.
We are different!
My internal memory 45GB free!
MicroSD removed
Yes, quite obviously, you are different. Won't get you a Nobel Prize.
Did you clear the media player's data yet? I have device pretty chock full with all kinds of graphics and videos, and on the MicroSD, the thumbnails file is only slightly less than 12 MB.
ShadowLea probably has a lot more.....errrmmm...shadowy material than me, so I dare not compare us directly.
It seems likely though that you just had a lot of material to be indexed previously, and those caches are never emptied, neither are they touched upon a reinstall. You'll need to empty them by hand yourself.

How can I manually clear the cache?
Usually through the settings in the apps themselves.
OK. So what application should I see? Gallery app or all photos and videos app? (Example QuickPic, Mxplayer)
All of them.

I had the same problem...my files was 1.6GB. I believe it has to do with thumbnails database off all pictues that have been on your phone or gallery, and even if you delete it, they keep track of the all and then recreates the thumbnails file.
My solution was to create a empty folder with the exact same name of the file, in the same location (after deleting the big file first)...did not need to change permissions or anything, just an plain empty folder with the same name replacing the file. I´ve rebooted several times/took lots of pictures and seems to prevent the file to re-create. Has worked so far.
Hope that helps
It seems to work!
Since I created two folders with the name of the file .thumbdata are no longer created the two large files and does not create even the thumbnails!
THANKS

Any abnormalities with your device since? Like opening the camera app, taking photos, accessing Gallery, and FCs?
I noticed this type of behavior back with my Motorola DROID. I realized that when I performed Factory resets it would not delete these files off of the SDCard, an I had 4 or 5 of them (when I was trying every ROM under the sun before CM7 was released).
I finally figured out that just deleting them would allow the apps to recreate what they needed - but yeah, some photos that I had moved to a 'hidden' location still had thumbnails showing. I finally figured out what ShadowLea is saying - you have to clear the cache components of the applications themselves and then let them rebuild. From there it is a piece of cake.
solved for Galaxy S3
Hello,
I had the same problem on my Samsung S3. The file was allways created with 1,74 GB and growed. when i deleted it by hand it was created a few minutes later again.
Here the solution that worked for me
1) copy file name
2) delte the file
3) create a folder with the filename (not a file!) *
4) take away all possible permissions for this folder (with total commander for andriod for example)
After that my camera and my picture viewer still works fine. the only "problem" i have is that i dont see a preview of my old pictures in the down left corner of the camera app.
*I also tried to create a file with the name and took the permissions from it but it was overwriten by the camera anyway.
cheers!
Could probably be placed in a q&a section for general Android questions, but since I have the TF700 I'll ask here.
Is there a way to import only new (new as in not located in the 'Imported' directoy on the tablet) images (JPG) from a camera that is connected to the tablet through a USB-cable (I have a keyboard dock) without too much hassle?
As of now I've only used the gallery app that detects the camera (Nikon D3200 for my, if that should matter) as soon as I connect it and turn it on, but that app won't let me import only the new images, hence, for each day that goes by on my holiday and the number of images increases, the time it takes to import the pictures also increase greatly as I have to import them all every single time. Grouping the files by date works for browsing the new images, but it's not posible to import the groups of images for some stupid reason.
I can of course delete the pictures I've already imported from the camera's SD card, but I'd like to keep them there as a second copy until I get a better wifi-connection that can handle uploading all the images to dropbox/etc (only holiday now in an area with limited internet connection).
I've read people recommend using file explorers for copying the files manually (e.g. ESF), but I can't find in which dir the camera's SD card is mounted in the app (at the same time, the stock gallery app recognizes the camera, so there shouldn't be any problems with the communcation between the devices). If this is the way to go, where do I find the camera directory?
Or are there any apps out there that are made for this kind of problem that just haven't found yet?
EDIT:
Kinda solved the problem by taking out the SD card of the camera and insert it into the keyboard dock, and then use an app called QuickPic which discovered the new images only. But I think it still is interesting to know how I can do the same thing using the USB cable to transfer the files, so I assume the problem again is where the camera is mounted when connected with the USB (in the QuickPic settings I'm allowed to specify which directories that should be searched for files).
-d.
When I try and change my wallpaper I can't seem to find any of the images on my*SD*card*to pick from. The gallery does however show images that are stored on my*externalmicroSD*card. I can explore the internal*SD*card*with a file manager I downloaded (I think it's called File Manager 1.1.4) and copy the images from my internal to a folder on the external. If I can explore the internal, why can't I see the pics in the gallery?*
Is there a way to tell the gallery app to search all folders or something? A refresh button? The gallery app is stock CM11 mod.*
I just noticed the same thing is happening with videos. When I open up the stock video app it shows "no videos", which is certianly not the*case*as I have a bunch transferred to the internal*sd card*and a couple that I've taken with the camera.
Any ideas outside of completely reformatting/re-flashing?
Hi there,
About what device are we talking about?
Thanks
