Compare my screenshot attached to your battery life stats on CM11. I wanted to make this post due to my satisfaction with going back to CM10.2 in lieu of CM11. There is not really any functionality missing that I can tell. I consider myself a moderate to heavy user. With CM11 I was having to always be chasing around a phone charger or my phone would die or almost die a couple times a day. I immediately noticed an improvement in battery life and the CM10.2 snapshot I am running is very stable..
If anyone is getting frustrated with this phone on the latest builds I would suggest going back. I feel like its breathed new life into my experience with the phone. We have a tendency to always chase the newest and latest and greatest but its not always greatest. I feel like that is a microcosm for the story of the MPQ. Tech industry and the general consumer moved on from keyboards like sheep for some reason and the MPQ I feel is still a superior phone to anything on the market simply due to the keyboard. Its an essential piece of hardware to me. I've bought like 10 of these phones and will gladly buy 10 more..
What's your 'screen on' stats look like? That's where the rubber hits the road.
Of course things like crappy mobile signal, wifi being used over mobile, etc will significantly impact battery life.
Hi,
I've flashed CM12 right after my MPQ arrived. I used it with this ROM (with updates) for about a year. Yesterday i got really upset because all of the lags and stutters in CM11, so I've flashed the last CM 10.2.1 ROM. OH MY GOD. My phone runs so much faster and the battery life is awesome. No more lags etc. It feels like a complete diferent phone...now I am really happy with it!
Thanks matt2k12 for the idea of downgrading
EDIT: I use the CM 10.2.1 ROM, just google it. It is in the "stable" section in CM downloads
I sent my phone to get modded a while back and it came back with Carbon ROM on it. The phone runs pretty slow lately.
Do you guys think the Carbon Rom is not the way to go? I've been very disappointed in the performance lately so much so that I was considering a new device.. but I really need the keyboard. I dont have time to mess around with a touch screen.
Should I go for the 10.2.1 ?
you say so very feeling!

Performance(at least in apps and apex launcher) is very good(smooth). In games its not so smooth due to some of my tweaks that decreases 3d performance, but improves framerate stability.

I just had to tell people, in case you have been worried about trying. I am running this rom right now, the battery life seems improved and the performance is phenomenal. The time I have spent with this phone I have been constantly trying new kernels and roms to see which runs the best, runs games smooth, generally works. And kept coming up with nice looking smooth roms missing the normal umph I am used to.
Updated to C7 A7 today and it works great smooth gaming everything works, the camera is much improved over the previous cm7's. I have no kernel flashed just the one that came with CM7 and it runs games like asphalt 6 perfectly smooth. This is clocked at 1124 as well so it runs cool (Temperature.) .. Fast and Cool Also has 380ish free RAM so it doesn't have allot of background stuff going, I would imaging the battery life is pretty good, don't know for sure yet. And the GPS works quick, connects to 10 satellites sitting on my couch in my living room!
The only real issue is the wifi signal is not as strong, though it doesn't disconnect or anything its just the signal is lower.
I know this is a bit random and what not but I wanted this out here for anyone that was looking for smooth gaming like I was, after all this is supposed to be faster than the tegra chipset!
Cool. I was waiting for it to be out of Alpha, but I may just go ahead and flash it sooner rather than later.
Yeah, take the jump. I haven't found a reason yet to not recommend it to anyone. Been playing with it pretty heavy today too.
Is anyone having issues with the wallpaper not sticking in cm7. Mine keeps changing randomly.

Battery life is the best thing about this rom not including the other great modifications.

for me battery life is the worst thing =[
Battery life - (Light to moderate usage today) I've unplugged it and left it on from 3am to 8am and it showed 100% still. google and xda forum a little like 5mins and it dropped 2%. It hasn't been charged since and its been 15hours with 40% batt life.
Front camera looks hazy, not sure why but it'll probably get fixed by devs sooner or later. lock screen is awesome, really fast. Graphically every thing looks really good. On sense 3.0 we need to unlock to see time, with CM7 we don't need to any longer General text in CM7 is much biggerand Incoming call text is way-way-Wayyyy bigger compared to other roms Thank you devs ! it made it so much easier to see who's calling now.
i've been using various phones for the past few years and they all had this particular problem i've been facing. if someone calls me and hangs up and speed dials and calls me back immediately, my phone would be engaged. on CM7 and that problem has gone away!!! woohoo!!!!
i can't wait for it to go Beta/stable

have you tried clearing your batt stats in recovery ?
its been reported batt charging is a little off for some people. i was charging it last night and it usually takes between 3~4 hours. on CM7 it only took like 1.5 hours.
I've unplugged it after charging and left it on to see how the drainage goes. its seems alright here.
Hmm been thinking about using this but not sure since it's still in Alpha. I will probably just wait until it's out of alpha/beta. I want a solid rom without many glitches/bugs =p

Few people see the serious bugs that others do. I dont see any serious issues with my phone...There are "quirks" but not really bugs. (Alpha 7).
Matt
Use "FXR WIFI fix and rescue" from market..Fixed my low wifi signal bug instantly!!.Still have issue with wifi calling after all update/zip patches.Battery life great after stat wipe and calibration..Stable fast ROM with few bugs @-A7..Already dreaming of a ICS Cyanogen..
I think about 9/10 bugs in the CM7 thread now are due to noob mistakes or people not wiping properly or people restoring bad data into the ROM with titanium backup or its a badly behaving app not the ROM.
This ROM is rock solid for me and many others. Looking at the main thread it might seem otherwise because of all the people reporting errors. Not many happy users pop in to talk about how smooth and stable this ROM is.

I'm currently running latest stock Android 4.1.2 on my Nexus S. It appears that official Google support has come to an end and therefore there is no point keeping the original software. It also seems to me that current version of Android on Nexus isn't exactly a good example of well optimized software which is the reason why I'm looking for an alternative.
My requirements are speed, stability and possibly better battery life. Extra functionality is not important, I'm happy with 4.1.2 as it is. However I don't want to downgrade to ICS not to mention Gingerbread.
So could you recommend me a good alternative rom for Nexus S, based on your own experience? I'm currently thinking of CyanogenMod because there is plenty of people behind it and its really famous so I guess it should be stable and reliable but I haven't decided yet. What do you think?
I use AOKP with the marmite kernel. Works great.

Same here currently on cm 10 stable with default kernel for weeks now it's been really fast and stable. Was surprised. I had tried cm10 when it came out for our device and it was pretty bad stability and battery wise so I went to aosp roms.... Gave stable a shot and wow it has come a looooooong way in such a short time

Another vote for CM10. I'm currently using the new rasbean, but if 4.1.2 is good with you, I'm not sure anything can beat the stability of the stable version of CM10.
Having tried tons of amazing ROMs on ICS, I feel there were more stable and fluid options than with 4.1... That's not to say 4.1 didn't have great ROMs, I'm just saying that it was harder to find a stable, speedy, efficient 4.1 ROM... If you want to stay with 4.1, then I can only vouch for BAKEDbean 6... I haven't tried as many 4.1's as I did with 4.0... From memory, Slim Bean was pretty good... I just didn't like some of the included options...
Now here's what I can say about 4.2 ROMs... Since you don't mind missing some included features like theme chooser, statusbar tweaks, etc... Then I would highly suggest Rasbean with Matr1x CFS 24.0 (non-cm version)... I always told myself that I would never use a ROM without theme chooser... But after trying this ROM, I've discovered that speed and fluidity is way more important to me than a few extra features... This ROM is amazing... I'm getting much better battery life with this combo than with any 4.1 combo I tried... At the very least, give it a try
*edit* in case you see reviews or read somewhere that it's not a "stable" release... I would ignore that crap because I haven't had a single issue with this ROM other than the phone app fc'ing after some calls which is 4G related... and since you're on crespo, you won't have that problem... Everything works on this ROM!!!

Moved to Q&A section....thank you.
Hey, thanks to all of you guys. I switched to CyanogenMod 10 since many of you have recommended it and it also seemed to me pretty solid and reliable. Nexus S now does seem a little bit faster and more fluid however it's hard to tell after less than a day of using it. I won't go back anyway, those few extra features are really nice. My problem with stock JB was that it suffered from some kind of memory leak... quite often I ended up with literally 0 MB of free ram. The phone also got quite often to a state of total unresponsiveness for few moments without any obvious reason. None of these problem has occured in CM so far however for example during heavy usage, when I go back to home screen, the launcher is really slow (1-2fps) for few seconds. But I guess I can't expect much from 2 year old hardware.
You also mentioned several alternative kernels... what can I expect from that in daily usage?

I have not an ounce of lag on rasbean 4.2.1... I didn't think it would get better than 4.1 but it clearly does... I don't think everyone that recommended cm10 has even tried a 4.2 ROM yet... BTW, cm10.1 will be released soon and I'm sure everyone with update then...
For kernel, use airkernel or matr1x... Think of the kernel as the brain of the phone... It tells the phone what to so with the hardware... So you can tweak things foe better speed or better battery or even attempt to get a good balance between the two...
My last time mentioning it... I would strongly recommend you to backup your current setup and flash the 4.2 ROM with matr1x 24.0... That is all

Well I know what the kernel is (I have been using Linux on my desktop for several years ) I was just curious how one can benefit from using an alternative kernel for Android. You say I can tweak things for better speed or battery life... does it mean that I can for example sacrifice 30% of battery life and exchange it for 30% of performance in gaming? What are the limits of this tweaking?
Hey guys, would love to get some advice on batteries for this phone. I would like to buy an extended battery or at the very least a spare that I could swap out when my main one dies (which happens far too frequently for my liking). I've heard some talk on these forums about Nexus batteries fitting in these phones, is that true? And if so what Nexus battery should I purchase to be sure it would fit? If not any aftermarket batteries that you guys recommend or would I be better off with OEM? Thanks in advance for the advice!

I'm using the latest 'stable' build of CM10, CM 10-20130107 and whatever the default kernel is for that ROM. Battery life isn't awful but I wouldn't really call it great either. If I'm just around the house on WiFi all day I can get about 3 hours ish of screen on time and maybe 10 hours of standby. Problem is as soon as I go mobile 4G seems to really suck the battery dry. I'll get maybe an hour and a half of screen on time and shortly after that it will die. The strange thing is that I have all of my push notifications off for everything except Facebook, no email or any other apps are seeking data (in theory), Google Play isn't allowed to update when on mobile data so I'm not sure why being on 4G makes such a difference but it really seems to drain the battery fast. I have noticed a few things when trying to troubleshoot battery issues that I've had, CPU almost never seemed to go below 384 MHz according to CPU Spy so it was never hitting deep sleep like it should. I went ahead and uninstalled almost all my apps on it and now it does seem to enter deep sleep more often. Another interesting thing that I notice is that sometimes the phone will just be sitting in my pocket not doing anything and it will be really warm for some reason (almost like CPU has been working under full load for a long time) even though I haven't been using it at all. Seems to only do that when I'm not on WiFi so maybe something to do with the 4G modem? Anyway if you have some advice on a better ROM or kernel that would give me better battery life I would be happy to hear it. Battery life is really my only gripe with this phone.
I'm using the All-star Liquid Smooth ROM and running Lightning Zap Kernel by Thomas.Raines
This is my battery life
Now I have been using WiFi all day and when I'm on 4G there isn't a significant battery drain... to be honest I saw some of the best battery life ever on this phone using AOKP by racing 19969 I was getting at least 15 hours and max was 17.5 hours using LZ kernel on that one too
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T769 using xda premium
I've been able to pull about 12-13 hours with minimal use on CM 10 w/ BlueLightning X2 kernel underclocked a bit, so I'm thinking its time for a new battery. When I first got it I was able to get somewhere around 16 hours on the debloated stock GB ROM. Ideally I would love to be able to get at least 18 hours, so that I could make it through an entire day and night with a few hours to spare, but I don't see that happening.
I love this phone, but hate having to worry about the battery mid-way through the afternoon. I really do miss the days of my old BlackBerry getting 3+ days of heavy use before it started to warn me to charge it...

I've honestly thought about going back to stock firmware several times, thinking that the battery might be better there along with better stability. I love CM-10 for the looks and just overall usability but with random reboots still happening at least once a week and other little quirks along the way I've wondered if I might not be better off with something a little more consistent as my daily driver. I did try Lighting Zap Kernel at one point, perhaps problem with how my mod was installed or something but I found my phone to be consistently slower and laggy with it so I removed it and went back to base CM-10 kernel.

Well the thing was I only lagged when I had Lightning Zap installed so either it was stupidity on my part or too much gunk in the file system or something else. I'm a little confused as to what AOKP is, I was under the understanding that it's a kernel, but Lightning Zap is also a kernel and you can't have two right? I did try the Gremlin Remover, which completely screwed up my phone the first time, so I went back, used black hole, then Gremlin Remover, and reinstalled everything from scratch, phone seems to be stable now but I did have a black screen on death once since then. Somehow in that whole process my 32gig SD card seems to have died : (

I would use the latest nightly instead or the stable. I also use blue lightning x2, I have better batterywith it than with Lightning Zap. Using mobile data with the screen on will kill your battery no matter what.
If your phone is not sleeping correctly (normally I will loose 1 percent a hour on wifi while sleeping, I also do a high level ATK kill before). Try doing a backup and run black hole and fsc a few times and format the emmc (backup important stuff). Then a flash of the nightly, kernel and gapps.

well I placed the issue of Pandora in there so perhaps someone who uses the phone the same way could input on what they use and that its comparable to what I am looking for.
I would just dump rom after rom until I find something but time for me is super precious these next couple months.
A chart is great but remember Im not using a lot of the features the charts will describe.
Im only using it for google voice (to see my calls in the gym), pandora, play store, and play music, then some web browsing of course.
I actually turned off all the phone and data features to hopefully conserve battery life.

I just read it. I can try the slim rom. Im going to try installing devil kernel later first and see if it helps.
Still just hoping someone who is utilizing the same features I am can drop in and give their input. Not saying any rom is bad or better just looking to save some time, Im on the road a lot the next few months and the gym is my only real down time. Last night it was quite frustrating dealing with pandora.

The rom version you are using is partly to blame, newer isn't always better, go back to a previous version and install Devil.. the same for Slim, I wouldn't suggest passing 3.0 as of right now and Illusion has a couple issues, but it has serious speed...

cool thanks
Euroskank KitKang is another good option, and Devil Kernel is a must for any of the CM based ROMs, in my opinion.
Devil Kernel for 4.4 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46810981&postcount=452

I just tried this version, and it does seem a bit faster than the original AOSP.. It is fast, but not very smooth, as scrolling seems rather jittery...

Try Illusion 3/16 ( I made a bootable version, as the original had a flaw in the updater script, link is on the page) and flash the boot.img from your AOSP rom.. I was getting 5500's in antutu on stock speeds and 6500's overclocked, smooth scrolling and better battery life as well...
Don't try Devil with this rom as it breaks the playstore..
fastest of them all
no need for custom kernel just boot up latest nightlie from Cyanfox and cyanfox gapps and it's the fastest 4.4 rom for nexus s there is ! !!:laugh:

I haven't tested Cyanfox since 2.02, it is a quick rom.. the site is down, gearing up for version 3, I wonder if our device will still be supported?.. C-rom is very fast with Devil kernel, (the initial release, the second release is slightly slower than the first) and has tested higher than any rom I've tried to date, even higher than when I tested Cyanfox.. If our device is supported in version 3, I hope the rotation bug is fixed..

I'm using it with devil kernel now as well and it's slightly slower for me than cyanfox's latest nightlie,
Just wondering if anyone has had bad battery life while running KitKat on their gs3.
I get about 7 hours. Used to get around 11-12 with moderate usage with 4.2.
Anyone running a custom kernel?
Open to input and suggestions. Thanks in advance!

You won't be able to run a custom kernel if you have a locked bootloader. I've been running AOSP based KitKat roms for months since I never took an official update, and 14 hours is usually a non-issue.
I used to get 12-15 hours on 4.3 now with KK4.4.2 I get about 7-9 hours now. It's definitely a battery drain! I even replaced my battery and still doesn't help.
Have you tried a factory reset after taking the update?
Sorry I didn't mention this. I am rooted and I have flashed a custom ROM. Carbon to be exact.

Im stock and Verizon did a complete wipe of the phone and loaded 4.4.2 right to my phone. Didn't make a difference. They are claiming it's hardware but I don't believe that especially since I'm out of warranty.
Oh, that makes a huge difference. Look for Steve Spencer on Google+. I'm running his latest CM11+ build and getting ridiculous standby time.

People reading this can't use aosp, no cm11 unfortunately.
Anyone tried switching to ART runtime? Might not notice anything, but in theory it should save some battery with how the runtime operates. Switch to it, then let it settle for a few days and see if you notice a difference. It'll definitely boost performance.
