Need stock recovery.img from 2.1 - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 16GB Shield bought in the UK and I need the stock recovery.img (I'm on the latest Lollipop build). Can anyone upload it please?

It would be much appreciated

I can't seem to find the full image for the latest Lollipop update either so I could extract the recovery.img myself.

There isnt one yet... I suspect its the same recovery as in 1.2 (if your specifically looking for the recovery partition that is). I did a reload from 1.2 then upgraded to 5.1 (Nvidia removed the 5.0 OTA and now goes directly to 5.1).
I have to say, since did that, almost everything is working properly on 5.1. I suspect 1.2 to 5.0 to 5.1 caused some minor annoying glitches..

Ah I see. Could you point me in the right direction as to where to download that? (16GB WiFi Shield bought in UK, I literally just need to flash back the stock recovery.img)

I signed up as a developer on the US Nvidia web site... a few hours later I received the approval then downloaded from there. I suspect it is the same process except from the Nvidia UK site.
Here is the site where I went (scroll down to NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet WiFi Recovery OS Image ):
https://developer.nvidia.com/gameworksdownload
And look here!!! I stand corrected! Nvidia updated to 2.1 recovery late December! Nice!
Try the same but on the UK site.

Viewsonic update released today

I just got back to my desk and had the notification that an update was available. I ran it and my GTablet is running noticibly faster.
Not sure what was all included, but it was a nice surprise...
I'm ripping it apart, now. 1800 on Quadrant, AB works (so they grabbed something from the new Tegra drivers), no Flash that I can see.

roebeet,
So this is apparently not the update (with Flash) that's suppose to be coming out mid-December (12/16?)?
Jim
well.....
well it would seem that the update really did fix some problems. Angery Birds now runs on the factory ROM (video driver improvement)
Fixed WPA Enterprise or EAP support?
the factory linked (G-market) seems to work now to.
(For TnT Lite users) I am underwhelmed -nothing I can see worth mentioning, yet. Not even a kernel update.
I'm going to release a TnT Lite 2.3.0 tomorrow most likely, but this is not the 3.0.0 I was hoping for. Maybe you can find a bug fix in there that I might have missed.
Hi,
On my new (just picked up) Gtab, settings=>About is showing:
Tap UI version: 1.0-2736
Kernel: 2.6.32.9-000000-10.8.2-dirty
Build: FRF91
Where is that on the revisions from Viewsonic (e.g., is it the original? Or an update?)?
The reason for the question is that I haven't configured WIFI yet, and am assuming that I'll get that notification when I do, and am trying to figure if I should do the new update or not?
Jim
Update failed.
After the update downloads and then reboots the gtablet, I get an andriod image with an exclamation mark. After power down the gtablet boots find and informs me that the update failed.
The only two customizations I have are:
Z4 Root
ClockworkMod
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?

Hi,
Any comments about the above? The reason for the question is that I'd seen comments about how slow the stock software was, but the tablet seems to be reasonably responsive (to me)...

Let me know when you solve this one. I have the same problem. I have looked all over Google and nothing about removal

Even though this update means nothing to my gtab, it certainly does increase my respect for VS. At least they are somewhat following through with what they say.

It doesn't - you need standard recovery to use their update process. Or, just grab it from here: http://tapntap.http.internapcdn.net/tapntap/update-smb_a1002-3053-user.zip
and drop it somewhere and run cwm against it. It will work, but it will change cwm back to standard recovery.

Yes, except the user data which should be retained. This link is straight from TnT Inc. and it's what they've been pushing down to devices today.
Just ran update, and it removed GMail, Gtalk,Maps, and.... Market.
in ADW the icons are there, but they say not installed
Oh Superuser icon same thing.

[A700] Touch screen not working after latest OTA

Something very strange happened yesterday.
I got the latest OTA and installed it, after this the touch screen is not responding at all.
I managed to control the tablet with an usb mouse, so I have been able to do a factory reset, but to no avail.
Just now I'm clueless on what to do.
I actually did on more thing in the same process; the initial reason for why I took up the tablet yesterday, was to put on a screen protector film.
So while it was updating I put on the screen protector, after all this was done the touch screen was not responding. I don't think this issue has nothing to do with the screen protector, and I have also now removed the film. But still the screen does not react to touch.
But what to do from here?
Is it possible to revert to a previous version of the firmware?
I doubt reversion is the best option.
If this was common this forum would be flooded with complaints.
It might have been something to do with putting on the screen protector DURING an update.
Factory reset may help. Did you try the pinhole reset switch?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
I can use the tablet with a usb mouse, and have been able to do a factory reset. But this did not difference.
I have also tried the pinhole reset, no luck...
I have the same issue.
I tried back to ICS stock rom. Touch screen is not responding too. :crying:

Interesting.
Was it after the latest OTA the touch screen stopped working? Or was it something else that started this?
My tablet is stock in every way, never been rooted or had other roms installed.
I could of course send it in to service, but since I bought the tablet while on holiday in Washington DC and I reside in Norway, it's a little unpractical.

what is your image version and touch FW version? my A700 touch function is normal after OTA update.
my image is Acer_AV051_A700_RV19RC01_TWN_GEN1
touch FW version:AT0-22F40-F6935B
My touch screen work again.
I back to ICS stock rom (Acer_AV043_A700_RV07RC06_EMEA_FR), then I apply the update (Acer_A700_AV043.RV07RC06_AV043.RV23RC04_EMEA_FR).
Now I'm on JB (Acer_A700_AV043.RV23RC04_AV051.RV10RC01_EMEA_FR). All Work fine.

Thanks. Compared to yours I see that there is some problem with my touch FW version. On my tablet it says AT0-0-0.
Image version reads Acer_AV051_A700_1.052.00_PA_CUS1
Is it a way for me to fix this? Could I perhaps reapply some of the patches?

Seems the touch FW is incorrect.Maybe you can download the OS upgrade image from Acer website and reflash OS. I checked the image and it should packed touch FW. If still failed, maybe contact Acer service is good way to solve your problem.
Good luck.
I had the same problem this week, bought the Tablet on monday, made the OTA Update and boom, no Touch input.
I resolved it by unlock my device, flash CWM and then flashed a older full rom.
After that i made the OTA Update again and this time it worked well.
I can upload the ROM i used for this if it's needed.

I managed to reflash an older rom, taken from Acer site. And then upgraded via ota to the latest version.
I did not need to use cwm. Just started the tablet the power + volume - combination

Problem: Screen touches are bugged..
Hi,
I need some urgent help..
I upgraded my A700 (was shipped with 4.0.4) to JB but the screen touches are completely off track. I did the following:
1) unlocked the bootloader
2) flashed CWM Rom 6.0.1.5
3) installed cm-10
Don't know what to do next..
I have an Acer A700 and I'm having the same problem as others here.
Once I upgarded my ROM, the A700 touch-screen did not work.
I found a post that explained a fix. Here's what I did:
* Flashed the non-touch CWM v6.0.1.5
* Wiped everything (system, data, cache, dalvik)
* Installed the IconiaN ROM (by Vorbeth) and choose the option to have IconiaN upgrade my "Touch Firmware"
* The A700 is now booting with version JB-653b3d3 (Unlocked)
* The ROM loads just fine
However, in the ROM, the touchscreen does not work. Clicking in one place on the screen will trigger a click in an entirely different area of the screen.
I then tried installing one of the stock Acer ROMs from their website through CWM. None of them would load, not sure why?
Other people here seem to have solved the problem by flashing an "older ROM" from Acer. I could not find any trace of this older ROM.
I'm running an American version (PA1_CUS) if that makes any difference? I've also tried installing CM 10.1 with the same problems in the touchscreen.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Where can i get the acer software to update? i've tried to find it on the acer website but i cant find it.
please help. i just got the device and i updated it and now a portion of the screen becomes unresponsive to touch input.
toggling the screen on and off will fix it temporarily but that only lasts for 5 minutes max before it stops being responsive again.
Every thing on it is stock so i want to keep it that way

Try Google and search for your Rom Build number. Should be able to find the update file. You can also try some of the Acer support sites. I remember they have some ICS full roms for the 700.
Next of course, you're going to ask how to install it?
1. Decrypt the original update file (tool is in the themes and apps forum)
2. Using 7zip, OPEN the decrypted file (DO NOT UNZIP IT)
3. Pull the "update.zip" (NO NOT UNZIP IT)
4. Copy the update.zip to your ext sd card
5. Start tablet holding PWR & Vol- or + (can't remember which) until you see the text in upper left corner then release. Now, JB may have a different stock recovery which offers a small menu. I believe you can select the install update from there.
If the update doesn't install, it may be the wrong update file, so you'll have to search for another.
Anyhow, should work for you. But you may have to roll back to the original ICS rom (full version) then OTA update again.
Remember though, you do this at your own risk, so if things get messed up, don't blame anybody

after many google searches i finally found the update files on the acer website!
i managed to go back to ics then re update to jb
and for a while my screen had no issues but they came back again. Im begining to think that its a hardware related issue because it comes and goes. I am going to see if my warranty with square trade will get it fixed.

Looking for 2.2.1 WiFi hotfix download

I am trying to find a download spot for just the 2.2.1 hotfix (WiFi model). I have downloaded the full 2.2.1 but flashing the full 2.2 upgrade was a bit of a pain and I'd much rather just flash stock recovery and flash the update and reflash TWRP than to flash the full update and deal with Titanium Backup etc.
I flashed the 2.2 WiFi image on my LTE model when it first came out, and it's been great except my device shows it is "up to date" although it is not on 2.2.1. (the color gamut is is horrid 2.2 color and not the fixed one from 2.2.1).
TIA!!!
Nvidia has been postion ota links you can flash with cwm/twrp. You will need to reflash su as expected. I found it on the geforce forums... There were LTE us and WiFi us floating around and an explanation to what ota is right for the device you have.
Stumbled on it quicker than I thought.

You are awesome, thank you !!!!!!!!!
I can't figure out how to find files at ota.nividia.com without knowing the actual file name and location. Drives me nuts the full ROMs are easy to find but the OTA seems to be some sort of secret thing.
Edit: see below, worked great.
The WiFi download is over 700MB, it's the full OTA and not just the hotfix. Why is the stupid hotfix so hard to find? Never experienced this with Motorola or Samsung. Samsung hides there stuff pretty good as well, but at least we have an independent site (sammobile) to provide us all the files.
Well it installed fine and with the su install I kept root. I don't know why the downloaded update is so large, looking in the zip I saw a new boot image (small), the new blob for the kernel (also small) and about half a dozen files under system. I also don't know why my device was showing up to date, other than perhaps the fact I am running the WiFi ROM on an LTE device and it's just confused.
Thanks again for finding the file for me, it was super fast and easy.

System ROM Size Difference - k1 vs original

Using Titanium Backup, I noticed the original shield tablet 16GB has a System ROM size of 1.3 GB while K1 has a size of 2.03 GB. Is this correct? They are both running 5.1.1 Stock Lollipop. What gives?

Maybe you downloaded the system restore image for first version of the tablet, the one with stylus , because the new k1's rom doesn't include it.
If you wanna try, sideload it (the rom) and then try to update trough PlayStore, game is not recognised as legit and you cant download the Trine's update

No, you got the wrong image. Trine was with the original shield, it isn't included with the k1. I also restored the factory image (before updating to the 1.0 update, followed by the 1.1)

The claim is prior gen variants of 7" and 8" models (eg: 2018 HD8) will see an OTA upgrade to FireOS 7.
Last time Amazon attempted an OTA FireOS upgrade (vs update) was with the 3rd gen HDX line (FireOS v3 -> v4); lots of bricked devices in that debacle.
Seen these reports before. I have my doubts.

According to the Amazon developer site it is happening: https://developer.amazon.com/docs/fire-tablets/ft-identifying-tablet-devices.html. We'll have to wait and see, but this should be possible without re-partitioning the device. The bogus upgrade of some tablets from Fire OS 5 to 6 would have required a much larger system partition.
Hopefully it will be possible to upgrade and keep an unlocked bootloader and TWRP.

hope no one is waiting for an OS update on older devices...

It probably won’t help on your 2019 HD10, as it already has FireOS based on Android 9. This update will bring the Pie-based FireOS to older devices.
Seems to be no planned update for the Fire HD 10 7th Gen although it has similar hardware as the Fire HD 8 8th Gen. It will stuck on FireOS 5 which is based on Android 5 and which is already out of support. Shame on you Amazon!

Not at all. Amazon never promised major firmware (version) updates. Similar and identical are not the same thing.
Any expectation of investment in a 3 year old budget platform is pure fantasy.
Fire OS 7.3.1.5 is now avaliable for download for the Karnak (HD 8, 2018) and Mustang (7, 2019) tablets on the Amazon software download page.
I tried to flash the new version through TWRP. To be on the safe side, as when I updated to OS 6.3.1.5 through TWRP my recovery was overwritten, I edited the updater script. Flashing seemed to go OK (I re-flashed Magisk afterwards) but it bootlooped on the Amazon logo after rebooting. I could not even turn the tablet off by holding down the power button. I opened the case, disconnected the battery and booted into TWRP recovery after reconnecting. I then wiped and restored the backup I made just before flashing. The tablet is working fine again but I now have a vendor partition. I hope will be possible to keep an unlocked bootloader/ TWRP and upgrade to OS 7/ Pie.
My HD 8 is still mostly stock (just have Google's services and Play Store on it). So I downloaded the OS, and it's installing on its own right now.
It's a wait-and-see as to what it does. I know the UI is the same, but there are some notifications that the thing just would not show. I'm hoping this will work better.

thank you 4 trying n report! i dl the bin file but was too chicken to flash. i guess for a major update like this, Amazon may have to re-write the recovery, bootloader n everything else but my tin-foil hat is saying otherwise
Pie will be nice on the HD8 but im not giving up TWRP or BL unlock 4 it!
It would be good to know if anyone has got this to work. After getting a bootloop with the modified updater script, I flashed the original update, on its own and with GAPPS (arm 9.0 nano) and Magisk (20.4). There were no error messages in either case, but the same bootloop. I tried an adb sideload with the same result. I also used amonet to flash the OS 7.3.1.5 preloader and TZ files. This alone is enough to bootloop. I have not tried flashing the new LK but this would probably cause problems with the unlock as the necessary LK exploit is likely to have been blocked (it has been with OS 6 since version 6.3.0.1).
Hopefully if you have a stock tablet and the update downloads and installs this will proceed correctly and the upgrade problems are caused by some incompatibility with the unlock exploit. If not there are going to be a lot of bricked tablets out there.
Mine updated just fine from stock setup. Even the added Google stuff still worked.
However, running through all the settings, I went to the factory reset page. As I was bringing my finger over to hit cancel, I was apparently too close to the screen, and it picked up the OK button instead. Did not know it would be THAT easy. It started wiping, and there was no stopping.
It did give me a chance to redo everything. Used the Fire Toolbox to install the Google Play stuff this time (manually did it before). That worked well.
Maybe it was the reset, but the whole UI seems a little smoother. Also, after a full day, the battery seems to be lasting longer than I expected given all the re-downloading and setting up I've been doing.

it is a good free major upgrade (a first for any fire device in recent years). i use fire OS 7 on my HD10 2019 n it is better than OS 5 n 6. u would think that it works out-of-box for a stock tablet but i remember reading about the last time Amazon did it, there WERE a lot of bricked tablets out there
thanx again for ur tests! i will pass on this update. hopefully someone can extract some useful things from this Pie release for the LOS 16 custom ROM.
edit: @joeldf - thanks for the update! so the update works for stock ROM. since factory reset gave the same ROM, the update did rewrite the recovery. basically will have to give up BL unlock, TWRP n root for the OS 7 update. u MAY get 'em back by opening up the tablet (im not up-to-date on unlocking latest OS.) For me, I will pass.
Looks like there is a kernel patch required. It's possible the new TZ can work with the old LK, where the unlock sits. If you have yours open to do amonet, try replacing TZ as well! You can recover via contact shorting.

I am having problems getting this version working at all. I tried downgrading the version of TWRP and flashed the new software with a modified updater script (to change the paths and make it work with this TWRP version). This also overwrites the PL, TZ and LK plus recovery. I didn't get a bootloop but it would not progress past the Amazon logo screen on boot.
