First time using a T-Mobile phone on AT&T - Note Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So after fighting with my previous bootloader-locked Notes on AT&T I decided this time to buy a T-Mobile Edge. I have it rooted and plan on trying a custom rom in the near future but I have a question.
There is a persistent nagging message about installing the OTA. I don't plan on installing it but I'm wondering if there's anything I should know about installing custom T-Mobile roms while using AT&T's network? Oddly enough, I'm getting better signal strength on my T-mobile edge than I did with my AT&T Note 3. Go figure.

I could be wrong but pretty positive the network the phone is running on doesn't mean anything. It's the benefit of unlocked phones and gsm networks.

There is a way to disable the OTA notifications but I don't remember off the top of my head. Also, if you flash a custom ROM, you shouldn't receive that notification as most, if not all, of the developers disable the OTA notifications.

Okay. Now that the N915T custom roms are starting to pop up, I can't install them because I'm still on the original NJL rom instead of the new NK3. How do I update it if I can't do the OTA? I'm guessing I need to find the stock original NJL firmware somewhere.

Correct. Once you find the NJL firmware, you will be able to flash an NJL ROM. Also, there are two ROMs in the T-Mobile section that are using the NK3 base. They are themed and provide more options than the stock rooted ROMs.

So I'm guessing I should just use TWRP to install the NJL zip? then what? do the ota? I downloaded both the original NJL and NK3. Would it work if I just used TWRP to install NK3?

The firmware should be able to be flashed using ODIN as long as you download the .tar files.

[Q] AtT NOte 2 unlocked, now using Tmobile, Can't upgrade firmware

MY sister called ATt to unlock her phone when she went abroad, they did. Now she no longer has ATT and is with tmobile. Using the Tmobile sim card, she can't seem to upgrade her OS using the firmware update option in settings. How can she go about upgrading? she currently has android 4.1.2 with the NOte 2?
also if i flash aokp on her phone, but she don't like it, then flash back the original 4.1.2 firmware, would i lose the unlock that ATT did for her and she can't use Tmobile anymore?

Carrier unlocking is separate from ROM. If you can install custom recovery (CWM, TWRP), switching from ROM to ROM is as simple as doing a backup of one, wiping the device, and installing another ROM. Always save a back-up to your computer, and it's also a good idea (much easier in the end) to do a batch back-up through Titanium of all the user apps, so you can simply restore them to the new ROM instead of downloading them all over again and losing the app data.
Factory firmware can be obtained from sammmobile.com and are flashable with Odin (google it).
thanks for the help but why can't she update the stock rom from the settings though when she switched to tmobile? are the update locked to the att carrier?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. The method Planterz gave you will give her the latest firmware. There's at least a few Lolipop ROMs for the Note 2

you wouldnt have to remove any bloatware if you do not want to as the rom only installs the carriers bloat, based on multi csc. rogers update is there too

i have never encountered it before as if you look inside the rom the csc's are there and should only install that one. I have a telus n3 on bell, used telus FW on prior revision and never once had a telus app but always had bell apps. Either way, there are only like 3 or 4 apps to remove. i would say download the rogers version and try that but they didnt release it yet... sorry maybe rogers csc not in this version. I am not using it, i just updated bootloader and modem, and back to n4 rom.

Not sure either with this firmware for Rogers phone because I flashed the full firmware twice already and checked that my bootloader and baseband were updated but still can't make video recording work on my phone. It only works if I use a custom kernel from Civz.

i had that problem before i update the bootloader, i had to use same kernel, i can even use pin unlock again without unmounting my sd since update and video recording works. did you do a full wipe after the flash, like after it flashes in odin, it will reboot to recovery and do its thing, then reboot to system. the key i found lately will these from canada is that you need to catch it before it boots to system and do a factory reset on it. (wipe system, cache and data and all is well)
that my experience with bells roms lately

I'll flash again and try that method.
Thanks
edit: Found the reason video wouldn't work. Somehow both my current binary and system status are custom and even wiping before flashing the official LP firmware wouldn't bring them back to Official so flashed back to 4.4.2 NB7 booted up then flashed to latest LP which fixed both statuses to Official. And now video recording works on official firmware. Now have to go back to N4 ported and see if it's fixed with Civz latest.
I have a Rogers Note 3. After flashing Camera does not work.
When you say catch it before it reboots after flashing? I did not catch it first time, so I should flash it again right.

It is working. I factory wiped it. Camera works in all its glory. Thanks!

Convert SM-G930T to SM-G930A so I can use AT&T LTE bands.

Hi All, I want to continue using my AT&T prepaid plan but I recently bought a locked T-Mobile Galaxy S7 SM-G930T (I'm going to try to unlock it - if that doesn't work this is all moot). I would like to flash AT&T firmware so I can use the AT&T LTE bands. Can I follow the instructions in the link below once I've unlocked a T-Mobile SM-G930T and turn it into a SM-G930A?
http://www.droidviews.com/nougat-firmware-on-att-galaxy-s7s7-edge-sm-g930a-g935a/
I've read the link below... but it seems to be only if you want to continue using T-Mobile service which I don't.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/tm...w-to-flash-att-nougat-to-t-mobile-s7-t3553610
Changing firmware doesn't have anything to do with what bands the hardware supports. Unlock it and throw the ATT SIM in. Only difference is carrier supported features and software (wifi calling, etc). Flashing ATT modem might improve coverage but all S7 support the same bands.
Thanks buddy for the reply. I'm used to using a custom ROM on my Android phones so this is new. Mostly CyanogenMod.
That's good to know I don't need to flash in order to get the bands but I understand I need to if I want OTA updates from at&t. It seems relatively simple that you just flash the AT&T ROM over the T-Mobile with Odin and then use some update file. It doesn't even effect Samsung pay and Knox which is great.
Stupid question: is the AT&T modem included with the AT&T rom? Also, with regards to the 2nd link in the OP what is the update file that you put on the sdcard to use in recovery - is that an OTA update because your ROM is different from your carrier?

I don't get why you would do this other than to have ATT bloat over TMO bloat (IMHO TMO has less bloat than ATT). There's no technical advantage. Am I missing something?

The amount of bloatware is irrelevant since you can freeze all bloatware on either build. I experienced many issues on the TMo version including issues with Android Auto, Google Assistant, and Tasker. I thought these apps were buggy but all of those issues were resolved on the AT&T version. The AT&T version seems to be a better, bug-free build.

Read that in a different thread you posted to after I responded. I think it's very YMMV though. But if you saw improvement then ??
Hi, did anyone ever complete this flash from SM-G930T to SM-G930A? I'd like to do this solely to try and get the wifi calling feature since my workplace has poor cell service but great wifi. I bought the T-Mobile phone, unlocked it, put the ATT sim in and everything but wifi calling works fine. I appreciate the reply!
This is much later in the year (11-8-2021) and ATT has posted the list of phone they say will work and it only shows G930A. It seems their test of working means it must have been sold by ATT. They say My G930T won't work. So Will ATT continue to use customer's unlocked phones it they were not orginally sold by ATT. They have the records. Will ATT refuse to use one of their SIMs even if the phone is Flashed to ATT logo. I do not want to throw away my G930T phone.

Hello and thank you. You posted this information and link back in 2017 and so much has changed. Mostly ATT is now working hard to get rid of all 3G towers and firing up 5G. They said my Galaxy S7-GM930T would not work so I think they link you posted will help me convert the phone back to a GM930A or U or U1. My question is,..Has anything in your post changed since 2017 and if so could you please advise me of what I need to do. Thanks very much.

[FIRMWARE] G950U1 Unlocked AT&T QK2

As of this writing (11/29/2017) this is the latest firmware for the G950U1 att unlocked S8 . I'm leaving this here for reference so people can return to it if/when they need it.
Download, extract, remove .md5 file name off the end of each file, flash.
G950U1UEU2AQK2 (This WILL update your bootloader so after this, no going to QH3 or before. Not that you'd have a reason to)

If I flash unbranded FW on a carrier specific device, loke tmo or att for example, would it sim unlock the phone?
If I flash tmo FW on an att s8 would it in turn allow me to use the att original device on tmo? I ask these questions because I feel like it would work for both my questions since flashing the FW flashes both boot, kernel and baseband/radio. The which is needed for signal. Just some theories but would love to know the answers.
Btw, I have a F model S8+ and was planning on buying some US branded devices so I was curious.

No, it will not unlock the phone (Note: Verizon phones are factory unlocked and remain that way after a firmware flash)
Yes, you can flash any carriers FW to a US S8 and use it with a different carrier.
So I understand, your saying if I flash att FW to a T-Mobile s8 I can use it on tmobile? If that is the case, to me that's an unlock of sorts tiny book lol. Just wanna make sure is all

Just realized the typo.....what I meant was, if I flash ATT on a TMO variant I can use ATT while locked to tmo? I'm very unfimiar with combination fw and always opted for the UK models for alot of reasons. Sorry for the confusion of my op question. I know on the s7 and edge if you flashed the US unlocked firmware it not only removed AOL bloat but it unlocked the device. So that is why I ask.

I had a TMobile S7 edge and flashing unlocked firmware never unlocked the device. That's handled by TMobile servers so...
Flashing unlocked firmware will give you just that. The smoother, bloat free firmware from another device but not the actual sim unlock.
I bought an unlocked device and wanted wifi calling so I flashed the g950usqs1aqf7 att firmware with Odin and it worked to enable wifi calling but I'm unable to get any ota updates and I hate the bloat. There are plenty of threads on this, but I don't think anyone was ever successful. I flashed att Oreo to my u1 and got the options, but can't get my company to change my imei back.... My personal phone sim works fine. Quit at that point since it's an Ims registration error. You can try merging the wifi calling apks, but I'm pretty sure it's baked pretty deep in the os. The Verizon guys got some of it working. You can try their threads and see if any of it applies to us.

Ok thanks. I need to flash anyways because I'm having terrible battery issues and just debating whether to go to a newer version of 950u or back to U1 and losing WiFi calling. In your opinion is oreo beta worth it
So just to confirm, I have read everything, but I am just a bit confused. If I flashed the unlocked firmware via modified odin on a locked AT&T S8 it will remove a lot of the carrier bloat and give my my wifi hotspot back, but remove wifi calling. Similar to when I flashed the T-Mobile firmware on my AT&T S7 and got rid of a ton of the AT&T bloatware but was able to activate my wifi hotspot but lost wifi calling. I stay locked to AT&T which is fine that is not my purpose for flashing

The links don't work. Any chance you've still got the firmware? I've been overseas since october. I have an unlocked AT&T phone that I intend to keep using when I get back, so I want to keep it AT&T FW.
Hi.
I have a G955U Galaxy S8+ AT&T Factory Unlocked on Android 7.0
Baseband Version: G955USQU1AQD9
Android Security Patch Level - April 1, 2017
I no longer live in the US, and currently in the Philippines. Phone works great and the signal is too and all, but I cannot get OTA updates.
Can I just download the firmware file in this thread and flash straight through ODIN, or do I need to follow another guide?

Any way to flash G930T firmware on a G930P that is on QJ3 current Sprint firmware?

Basically my phone is updated to Sprint version G930PVPU5BQJ3, and that version apparently has an updated bootloader. T-Mobile's current rom is G930TUVS4BQJ2 with an older bootloader.
Since the QJ3 bootloader is new, I can't successfully flash any firmware that is below QJ3, meaning I can't successfully flash T-Mobile firmware (or unlocked S7 firmware).
Does anybody know if there is anyway around this, or do I need to just wait a month or so for a new version of T-Mobile's rom that has the bootloader updated the same as the Sprint firmware?

firmware bootloader ver.
I have the same problem, no mobile data is killing my functionality. Regardless of whether or not I'm connected to a T-mobile APN I get nothing but calls and messages (texts only no mms/pics), no mobile data of any kind.
Is there a place where the current bootloader priority for some/or all of the various s7 roms (carrier &/or custom) can be looked up? I was considering using a custom rom but need to pick something that will flash with the firmware I have now and work with T-Mobile network. Ideally I would rather use stock carrier rom, since I'm really just a noob trying to use a Sprint phone on T-Mobile network. I really dont want another failed flash and to have to waste more time setting my phone back up with the partial functionality it has now. I'll wait if necessary but I wanted to ask about the bootloader priority and to see if anyone had any other suggestions. Thanks!

Sorry for the question is this new bootloader locked or unlocked. if it is unlocked you can flash a custom bootloader and with that you can flash any rom you like.

Thanks!

Just read Ivpre's post today on a 930p thread, bootloader version is the 9th digit in the firmware name.
How can one determine whether or not the bootloader is locked

Sorry for the question is this new bootloader locked or unlocked. if it is unlocked you can flash a custom bootloader and with that you can flash any rom you like.

I'm sure I'm asking a noob question but there is a very good reason for that

Hi. I just joined T-Mobile from Sprint. I entered the APN settings recommended on the tmobile help site, which only worked for about 5 minutes. After calling customer service, I was directed to create another APN profile, basically identical to the one I had originally done, without deleting the first one. After saving and selecting the new profile, go to Settings>General Management>Reset>Reset Network Settings. Push the button to make it so then power cycle. Mine has worked ever since. Of course that was only Monday but still. The tech said that the majority of the time it works although he could not explain why. I talked my wife through the same procedure on her S7 Edge and on hers mms doesn't work. Don't know why.
