[HOW TO] Update Moto G XT1034 (GPE) to Android 5.0.1 and Unbrick 5.0.1 failed OTA - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Le'ts start from the basics and what will you find in this guide:
1.- Convert Moto G XT1034 to Google Play Edition 5.0.1
2.- Apply Lollipop 5.0.1 OTA Update (Moto G XT1034 GPE Converted ONLY)
3.- Update Moto G XT1034 GPEc 4.4.4 to 5.0.1 without softbricks or Data Loss
4.- Unbrick and Update Moto G XT1034 (GPEc) From 4.4.4 to 5.0.1
Requirements:
Moto G XT1034
ADB and Fastboot on your PC and basic knowledge on how to use it.
Unlocked Bootloader
Note: GPEc means Moto G XT1034 Google Play Edition converted
1.- How To Convert Moto G XT1034:
This is pretty simple and you should go here and use MotoTool, it will convert your Phone from XT1034 to Google Play Edition 4.4.2
2.- After following the Step 1 and converting your Moto G XT1034 to GPE follow these steps to ensure a propper update to Lollipop:
a. Boot Moto G into GPEc 4.4.2 and complete setup
b. You will not have signal but that's ok, go straight to settings-About phone-System Update and update to 4.4.4 through OTA (well first connect to a WiFi Network)
c. Let the Update finish and boot into 4.4.4 (still no signal on your phone nor your SIM card is recognized, that's PERFECT)
d. Do the Same as step b, Settings- About Phone- System Update and update to 5.0.1 through OTA
e. Let the Lollipop update finish (it does take like 20 min). Boot and you will not have signal nor your SIM Card Recognized. To gain signal and Data connection boot to bootloader and follow these commands:
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot reboot
Use THIS FSG File:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzpaNmL9CSChZHRnc0RWaUFPUFk/view?usp=sharing
Note: if you don't find the OTA Update from 4.4.4 to 5.0.1 download in the System Update section download OTA Zip File from here and follow this guide to flash it, then proceed to step e.
3. So, the reason why when you update from 4.4.4 to 5.0.1 through OTA with a Moto G XT1034 GPEc (for those who had their phone converted and with signal) is that during the update recovery returns a Status 7 error from being a wrong device (XT1034 not XT1032) as a result from flashing either the modem or FSG File to obtain signal previous to 5.0.1 Update.
If you are in 4.4.4 with signal and want to update to 5.0.1 without losing your data or getting a softbrick follow these steps:
a. Flash stock GPE FSB File, reboot to bootloader and follow the commands.
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot reboot
Use THIS FSG File:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzpaNmL9CSChRTA3NjN0QlRQWTQ/view?usp=sharing
b. Boot your phone (you will not have signal or data or SIM recognized, EXCELLENT). Go to System- About Phone- System Update and apply the 5.0.1 OTA
c. Wait for the 5.0.1 update to finish and phone to boot, reboot to bootloader and do these commands:
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot reboot
Use THIS FSG File:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzpaNmL9CSChZHRnc0RWaUFPUFk/view?usp=sharing
4.- If you are in this number is because you went blazing guns for the 5.0.1 OTA got stuck on a bootloop and soft brick, evertybody told you were lost, hopeless and screwed....not quite there. Follow the steps
a.- Flash stock GPE FSB File, reboot to bootloader and follow the commands.
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot reboot
Use THIS FSG File:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzpaNmL9CSChRTA3NjN0QlRQWTQ/view?usp=sharing
b. Download OTA Zip File from here and follow this guide to flash it
c. Let the 5.0.1 update finish, you will not have signal, data nor your SIM Card recongnized, boot to Bootloader and follow these commands:
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot reboot
Use THIS FSG File:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzpaNmL9CSChZHRnc0RWaUFPUFk/view?usp=sharing
That should fix your problem, I recommend holding a little bit on future OTA's or just flash Stock GPE FSG before OTA and then the XT1034 FSG. For some of you the Stock XT1034 FSG that I linked may not work (depends on your carrier) if that is the case just download a stock ROM for your carrier, unzip it and copy the FSG
Remember to hit thanks

Not for 1st Gen LTE?
I'm assuming this won't work for the Moto G LTE 1st Gen versions.

It should work, just replace the XT1034 FSG for the 4G FSG if you don't have signal after converting to Google Play Edition

This does not work on XT1045. I've been trying it all morning. The problem is converting it to GPE. When flashing the XT1032 GPE files I get "hab check failed for boot" and "hab check failed for recovery" error messages.

I'm guessing you wouldn't know how to fix this, but its worth a shot.
I flashed my device to GPE (xt1032) and updated to 5.0 manually... I did in fact get a softbrick at that time, but downgraded to just get my device back to normal without knowing the risks.
After I downgraded I updated to 4.4.4 then poof, device basically hardbricked.(Won't turn on, Cannot enter bootloader)
I have researched this but haven't found too many people that bricked the way I did (Flashing GPE, Others seem to have used Brazilian Lolipop)

That's weird, the XT1032 it's the same model version as the GPE Edition, Have you tried using MotoTool? When you say hardbricked.....not even turning on?

Nope, Wont turn on at all. No longer how long I hold the power button, etc. Tried too many ways. (Also just double checked, it is in fact the XT1032, it was running motorola's software. )

Hey all, I have lollipop running on my XT1034 , and everything is going swimmingly. The only problem I have is that my cell phone signal drops out every now and then. It comes back very quickly, but I just wish it would stay more stable. Anyone else have this?

Yes. Using the stock XT1045 recovery and boot .IMG gets me to the GPE boot screen, but then it locks or loops. Trying to flash the GPE zip through CWM just fails to get anywhere. I figured these would all fail, I just wanted to see what would happen.

Wow, first time I heard about something so...drastic, maybe your battery died?

I believe there's a 5.0.2 build for Nexus devices, maybe that fixes it? Try flashing another FSG from your carrier

If your phone does not turn on neither is recognize by Windows...I Would bet is dead on hardware or something went beyond wrong during the flash, can't recall any other hardbrick case so bad
Try going to stock

If windows recognize the device go ahead and try a full reset to stock with a tar file

When I plug my phone into my computer it comes up as this.

Also, I read a little of that tutorial and I would need to access the bootloader, the devvice doesnt turn on tho.

[Q] Downgrade to 4.3 from 4.4.2 out of box XT1033

Before i begin, i am aware there are mutliple other threads about downgrading from KitKat 4.4.2 to JB 4.3 and also have come across the procedure of downgrading. But my query is still different from other ones.
Here is my query, I own a XT1033 dual sim asia with 4.4.2 OUT OF THE BOX. Now, can i manually flash a 4.3 dual sim asia firmware with this status...?
Reason bcz my factory version is 4.4.2 and i was willing to try 4.3 because 4.4.2 has numerous problems with Signal drops, Huge fluctuation in signal, Auto switching to aeroplane mode and back. I came across users of 4.3 out of box and have heard that 4.3 JB had been great in signal quality. Please assist.

I already have an unlocked bootloader and on CM11 since long time. But signal fluctuation issues seems to be in core of 4.4.2 release. I tried Stock Radios of XT1033 Asia, Brazil and India and also flashed stock rom via fastboot commands but none fixed this bug. I gathered feedback from 4.3 users that signal strength was great and there were no crashes in signal (Suddenly aeroplane mode and back normal during ongoing call or during idle status). So, was planning to give a try for 4.3. But i have 4.4.2 out of the box (factory version)
So i was puzzled whether its possible or not possible to try 4.3 with this status
Are there any side effects of downgrading alike breakage of OTA?
Breakage of Bootloader?
Sorry about the essay
Edit : Signal issues only on WCDMA only mode on KK.

Ideally, There are not side effects but
there are increased chances of something to go wrong!
Well, Here is the firmware!

Thank you bros for giving your view and ideas.
I undertook risk and tried straight way downgraded yesterday.
Conclusion: 4.4.2 Out of Box (factory version) phones are also downgrade able to 4.3 JB
I downloaded firmware version "Blur_Version.14.85.4.falcon_umtsds.AsiaRetail.en.03" from HERE and also downloaded mfastbootV2 tools. Extracted ROM and Mfastboot tools in same folder.
Saved following commands in notepad and saved it as StockJB.bat and placed in same folder. Executed the bat file and successfully downgraded to 4.3 within a minute.
Code:
mfastboot flash motoboot motoboot.img
mfastboot flash logo logo.bin
mfastboot flash boot boot.img
mfastboot flash recovery recovery.img
mfastboot flash system system.img

Warranty :The answer lies within your question mate. Before installing CWM you need to unlock Bootloader (Primary step without fail). And unlocking bootloader itself permanently voids your warranty bcz you will be submitting the oem code and requesting motorola for unlock key. Therefore, they void your warranty there and email you the unlock key.
Another case, if your factory version is 4.4.2 and you downgrade to 4.3 may also void your warranty (Not very Sure). Bcz you are flashing a non-factory version.
OTA Update : Yes, OTA will be working as confirmed by @Sk.D downgrading to 4.3. And upon upgrading back to 4.4.2 also OTA works as confirmed by me.
Signal : The signal crash (Auto switch to Aeroplane and back normal) bug is not available in 4.3. But the signal drop upon covering bottom half of your phone in a moderate 3g coverage area is same on 4.3 as well 4.4.2

Easier way would be to Grab the OTA package of 4.4.4 and update it via stock recovery. Provided you need to on 4.4.2 unrooted and unaltered status.
I haven't tried downgrading from 4.4.4 nor have tried flashing 4.4.4 via fastboot yet. Maybe you made some typo in your command lines.

Modem/Networks help?

Let's see.
I was running 4.4.4 Paranoid Android, but then I decided revert to a stock motorola rom.
I'm using an XT1033 converted to 1032 GPE. Long story short, wiped everything and phone got stuck at bootlogo.
Used flashboot and flashed stock 4.4.2 GPE Rom running fine currently after several tries although mobile network won't work.
"Error while searching for networks"
Tried installing different modems, still nothing. Any help?
To get a working GPE (and GPE is only XT1032) you could try this way:
1) flash this
2) download GPE 4.4.4
3) when you flash the GPE exclude the following commands:
Code:
mfastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
mfastboot erase modemst1
mfastboot erase modemst2
mfastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
You just gotta flash your 4.4.4 stock firmware. You can do that just by downloading the Motorola Device Software Updater and in like 15 min (depending on your internet speed) you will have your Moto G working again.

How to fix XT1032 Boot loop after factory reset

Hi,
after an apparently failed attempt to install the 5.0 OTA update my XT1032 now will boot to a droid lying on its back.
I went to the recovery from there (by pressing VolUp+Power) and did the "factory reset/wipe data" and rebooted.
Same result.
I did "wipe chache". Same result: Droid lying on its back, saying "Kein Befehl" (I guess that means "no command")
I can get into recovery mode (CWM was installed before all this*) so I could try to flash stuff from outside.
But what should I try to flash? I tried flashing a (supposedly) stock system but as soon as I start with "fastboot flash boot boot.img" the phone starts booting again. So I am not really sure what to do now.
Something is seriously wrong with this phone and I would like to restore it to stock settings. I bought it on amazon.DE - so if any one of you guys knows where I could find a truly original stock image for this phone and what to do with it, please let me know.
PS: Right now I can't even get into recovery anymore. The thing just keeps booting and booting. Can't even turn it off.
* meaning: before I flashed the supposed stock recovery that apparently, in combination with the OTA update, got me into this mess
I now followed this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47820707#post47820707
I used option 3b with a 4.4.4 rom ( RETAIL-DE_4.4.4_KXB21.14-L1.40_36_cid7_CFC_1FF )
I excuted all these commands. However, upon flashing the boot.img the phone immediately boots (and gets stuck).
So I re-entered fastboot again to finish the job. Everything else went fine.
But the problem persists: When booting, the phone now displays the "Warning: Bootloader unlocked" message for a long time, with a kind of water ripple effect from bottom to top, repeating.
When I switch it off, it switches back on automatically, trying to boot and getting stuck at this screen. Sometimes I get to the droid lying on its back with a red !-Triangle on top. Poor little bugger. Soft bricked.
What can I do to fix this?
I can still enter fastboot.
I assume that yet again I grabbed the wrong ROM.
Is this supposed to be dead? http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=14
I think you might be on lollipop bootloader as you are having a screen flickering issue & downgrading the boatloader might be dangerous.
I'm don't know whether it will solve your problem but try flashing a lollipop firmware.
I'm not allowed to post links. Google for XT 1032 lollipop firmware. I saw one in groupandroid website.
Download the firmware from the site & execute the given commands.

Thank you. I got that file.
"adb devices" won't find my phone, though.
"Fastboot devices" does. So I can't use "adb push ..." to move the ROM to the phone.
Also, whatever option I chose from the Fastboot Flash Mode, the phone starts to boot. So I can not "enter" Recovery.
Should I just use "fastboot update rom.zip"? I don't wan't to miss my last chance to revive this phone.
ADB commands will not work in with the phone fastboot mode.
Since fastboot commands do work, you can manually flash each partition from the stock ROM. Entering recovery isn't required to do this.

The problem here is that the phone will boot as soon as I flash the boot.img and the whole thing fails.
Do you see a way out of this situation?
Any way to do this with a .zip ROM?
Have you tried flashing different firmware such as the GPE for your phone?
Does boot.img flash properly? If it does, you could try installing TWRP, boot into TWRP, mount the data partition, and use your computer to copy a custom ROM to the phone fpr flashing.
@Fretchen
That might be because you are on lollipop bootloader & you are trying to flash kitkat bootloader? But I may be wrong. Previously you told that you tried restoring to kitkat & that boot.img is kitkat bootloader. Try with this lollipop firmware.

I now did exactly what legolas06 wrote, using "MoeMoe_BRASIL_XT1032_5.0.2_LXB22.46-28_cid12_CFC.xml"
There were "hab check fails" for recovery and boot but at least the device did not reboot upon flashing the boot.img.
I rebooted it and it is going further than ever before, all the Motorola animations were played but in the end the phone got stuck at the circular blue pool (water) with the bit Motorola 'M' plus the concentric water ripple effect.
I switched it off and on again and then it played through the animations, then updated the apps (total number: 9) and then started the system. Apparently it is working.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your support.
Allow me thse final questions:
Can I from now on just apply OTA updates?
If not, what can I change to make this possible?
Is it advisable to install a EU Rom soon for whatever reason?

Happy that I could help.
You flashed the stock firmware so everything should work again. OTA updates if available would work.

I don't know if you can apply OTA updates. Before the OTA update will work, you may need to update all Motorol apps via Play store.
You could wait until a fulkl stock lollipop pop is released for your phone and flash it using fastboot.
You can try different ROMs but stick to the ROMs made for your model. I have an xt1032 and I have installed US Retail, stock Telus, and GPE.
worked for me too, thank you soo much. give this solution a try

I had similar problems & this method worked for me everytime. Sorry I'm a new user & I cannot post the links.
You can search the forum & find the links.
I found a thread in "xda -> moto g general->[FIRMWARE][XT1032-XT1033] Firmware Lollipop Retail Brasil & Asia 5.0.2" by cristiand391. Download the firmware for your device. It will be in BRASIL_XT1032_5.0.2_LXB22.46-28_cid12_CFC.xml.zip. Extract the contents to the fastboot.exe folder where you use regularly. Run the commands in fastbootmode. Please be careful with the commands.
mfastboot flash partition gpt.bin
mfastboot flash motoboot motoboot.img
mfastboot flash logo logo.bin
mfastboot flash boot boot.img
mfastboot flash recovery recovery.img
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
mfastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
mfastboot erase modemst1
mfastboot erase modemst2
mfastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
mfastboot erase cache
mfastboot erase userdata
Reboot.

these steps look soo similar that the ones you can find in other blogs/discussions, but for me, in my case the main difference was the firmware, I tried with a loot of them, but the one that is mentioned in this post, installed smoothly, and with no issues, thank you so much, to post your experience and this solution.

A Noob's Guide to upgrade Moto X Play to Marshmallow ;)

Before i begin, i would like to state that none of the files belong to me, they have been uploaded or provided by someone or other over the internet and i have given credit wherever it is due. If i forget somewhere and please lemme know, I'll fix it.
Note: This is tested only on Moto X Play XT1562 Indian version only. Others use this guide at their own risk. Currently Calls/Data do not work in X1562 as you loose the modem files on upgrade and flashing them back has no effect
First, Lets download the stuff we need at hand:
1) Stock Brasilian Firmware drive.google.com/open?id=0Bx1aljTBgTbATE9ISmNYZ3h2UGs From Yuri Martins @ androidpit.com
2) The Marshmallow update. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-MLCAZmmekxb2hOa3ppWTBFRjQ from estanenmi @ XDA
Steps:
1)Now Reboot in fastboot mode by turning off phone and turning it on by holding volume down and power button. Connect to PC, open the command prompt in ADM folder by using shift+right click on ADB folder and selecting open command prompt option.
2)Copy past all the line below as it is in the command prompt. Sit back and relax. It will take around 5 minutes.
Code:
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot flash logo logo.bin
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.4
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.5
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.6
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.7
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.8
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot reboot
3) Restart the phone, it will have Brasilian firmware. Go through the initial set up and connect to PC to copy the marshmallow update file in phone directory.
4) Again restart the bootloader of phone by turning it off and turning on by holding the volume down and power button. Here select the recovery option. It will show a dead android pic, press power button and quickly tap volume up. You will be in the stock recovery. There select the install update from SD card option. Select the update file and install. Beware it will take a lot of time and it would appear stuck at patching or verifying files (can't remember which one ) but dont worry, its normal. Once it is done, restart the phone and enjoy the yummy marshmallow.
P.S: Sorry if i missed any instructions, i know the community here will help out others. I was in a bit of hurry, getting very late for bed, will add more instructions and pics tomorrow.
Adios

Has anyone tested this procedure on a Canadian xt1563?
I managed to save the modems upto brasilian rom upgrade. Lets see if i can manage to get them all the way through the end till marshmallow.
Hii

Hey I am using moto x play Indian Version. Can it upgraded to 6.0? What about warranty?
flash original brazilian firmware with rsd lite then update via stock recovery to marshmallow.
you doesnt need unlocked bootloader
Unable to get the sim to work in Marshmallow for Indian Moto X Play. Here are my findings. Could be useful for the tinkerers .
1) Install Indian ROM>Brasil ROM(no Sim)> Marshmallow (No Sim.)>Flash Indian modem = No Sim
2) Install Indian ROM> Brasil ROM without Brasil Modems (Sim works)> Marshmallow (No Sim)> Flash Indian modem = No Sim
3) Install Indian ROM>Brasil ROM> Flash Indian modem = No Sim
OK, so from everything I have read, this does NOT work correctly with the XT1562, in that modems do not work with this method, and thus no data or calls/sms. Should this not be given a big massive warning in the first post?

Done that. Thanks for pointing it out. Actually when i created the thread, I did not put my sim card in the phone thus had no idea about it. Its a shame though that everything else works flawlessly.

Did you used the method with four steps to change the modem?
Like:
Code:
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
Anyway think twice before upgrading with this method because usually on motorola phones you can't simply downgrade the firmware, many users in other forum sections faced some soft or even hard bricks trying to downgrade ( mainly bootloader and/or gpt )
Great, thanks. Ive been burned before a few times and left with expensive paperweights for phones from not reading all the comments and blindly updating. I make sure I know what Im heading into before flashing!
So... is anybody able to use his/her sim in europe (germany etc.) with this (brazilian) firmware with or without flashing the modem ?

Disclaimer: I am not an expert, I'm just using knowledge and experience to try and help, so don't blame me if something goes wrong.
The following instruction will let you restore your device to stock, making it like it is brand new. There is no need to unroot first, because flashing stock firmware will overwrite any modifications.
Step 0. Ensure you have an up to date backup of everything as this process will erase all data.
Step 1. Download the factory firmware images for your exact device model from here. Ensure to download the latest available firmware version to avoid bootloader issues.
Step 2. Make sure you have the Motorola Fastboot utility, which is attached to this thread
Step 3. Make a folder on your desktop, call it whatever you want, and move the mfastboot.exe file from the attached zip into it.
Step 4. Extract the factory firmware files into the same folder
Step 5. Power of the device itself and put it into 'fastboot mode' by holding 'Power' and 'Volume Down' at the same time for a few seconds.
Step 6. Right click in the folder and click 'Open command window here'. Then, run the following commands. Remember, this will erase all data.
Code:
mfastboot.exe oem lock begin
mfastboot.exe flash partition gpt.bin
mfastboot.exe flash motoboot motoboot.img
mfastboot.exe flash logo logo.bin
mfastboot.exe flash boot boot.img
mfastboot.exe flash recovery recovery.img
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk1
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk2
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk3
mfastboot.exe flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
mfastboot.exe erase modemst1
mfastboot.exe erase modemst2
mfastboot.exe flash fsg fsg.mbn
mfastboot.exe erase cache
mfastboot.exe erase userdata
mfastboot.exe oem lock
Unroot is done Successfully
unroot is done but my bootloader is still there. it isn't locked. now how to lock it. i can flash it again if it can be removed. help me to remover boot-loader. after this help i'm good as HELL..... thanks XDA & it's members.

Here it is,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/development/rom-identity-crisis-6-t3324595
Stock Marshmallow for XT1033 ported from Official Marshmallow build from the XT1068. I've been using it for months and I can say that this is light years ahead than CM 13 which I had been using since the release. The performance is good and the battery backup is really nice. After flashing the ROM flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/orig-development/kernel-kaminarikernel-v2-0-t3345716 this Kaminari kernel too. You'll never regret it.
Can you tell me that step by step? Means what to follow in strictly conditions.... It's because of safety purpose to avoid future failures.
Bhatt095 can you WhatsApp on my mobile pls ?? For 6.0 marshmallow installation
WhatsApp no is 8866735950
