[Q] WiFi woes - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
There are two issues with WiFi on my Nexus 5. The first, which was happening before I upgraded to Lollipop, is that my phone no longer remembers WiFi passwords and I have to re-insert them every time. I've searched around for this and been told that it's because Android only remembers a certain number of passwords so I've tried forgetting quite a few old WiFi access points but to no avail. Any ideas on this issue?
The second issue has only started occurring since I upgraded to Lollipop and is driving me nuts. Basically I can only very rarely access the WiFi menu in settings now, making it near impossible to connect to new access points. Pulling down the notification shade and tapping the wifi icon just seems to turn it on and off rather than taking me to the WiFi area in settings - is that right? And then if I go into settings and tap on WiFi the screen goes blank and I get a force close message. Very occasionally or after re-starting settings a few times it will work.
Any thoughts on either issue would be much appreciated. I've read the thread on WiFi not turning on but don't think that's the issue and as I say the latter issue has only occurred since the Lollipop upgrade.
Thanks
Alex

With the quick settings, you have to tap the network name to go into the wifi options. The wifi pie slice thing turns it on the off.
Sounds like you could use a factory reset to fix your other problems.

I haven't ever encountered #1, so I can't help with that. However, with #2- touching the icon will turn wifi (or bluetooth, etc) on and off. If you touch below the line (where it says wifi, bluetooth, etc) it will open the settings menu. It matters where you tap.

Thanks for the replies chaps - I hadn't realised that tapping on different bits did different things. Regardless of whether I go in through the settings 'cog' or by tapping on the word 'WiFi' under the pulldown shade though the next screen is still blank and I get a force close message. In fact today one of the times I tried it the phone just froze on a white screen and only holding down the power button for ten seconds allowed me to turn it off and use it again. Anyone had any similar issues?

I'm having the same issues as you (both of them), and I'm also looking for the solution to it. For the first one, I'm trying to disable backup and renabling them. Read online that sometimes there's something wrong with the sync. Not sure if it solved the problem but will try.
For the second one, the problem is because it takes a very long time for the phone to search for wifi hotspots. So if you turn on wifi (ie clicking on the big button) and wait for about 2 minutes for it to search, wifi will work find. However, the 2 minutes is a long painful wait.... Im not sure what is the reason for the wait though, my nvidia shield tablet has no such issues.
Anybody has any solutions?

Both of these issues sound like you need a factory reset

I tried to do a factory reset yesterday. Took me a really long time but failed. So i ended up having to sideload the 5.01 factory firmware, which formated my entire phone.
In any case, it did not work. It still takes me a very long time 'turning wifi on...'
Any other suggestions?

Widget and Text Input problems, can anyone help?

My Optimus 3D has suddenly developed some serious problems and I have no idea what is going on.
First indication was Power Off refused to work, it would blank the screen but the backlight and capacitive button light would remain on forever. So I have had to force off by holding the power button.
After doing this a few times its now taking AGES to finish bootup and most of the widgets are working sporadically. One minute they will be working, the next they won't and might respond to a touch half an hour later. Yet, a few of them still work fine. I have tested using LG Home as well as Launcher Pro, the same problem occurs on both.
Worst problem of all though is typing has stopped working. First time it did it I simply rebooted and it worked again, but its stopped functioning again and rebooting every day is unacceptable when it was fine before.
Basically any text input form I press, the keyboard pops up and I start typing, but the text doesn't go into the text input field. This is with any keyboard selected.
This is really frustrating as prior to these problems I was really loving this phone and hardly ever had to reboot it.
It seems it all started after something caused the phone to reboot itself in the night (the bootup jingle woke me but I was too tired to check) and then I think it locked up during the reboot as battery monitor widget shows no log entries after the reboot, just the battery suddenly at 100% again as I charged it before powering it back up the next day.
I would prefer to know how to fix it in case it happens again but if I am forced to restore to factory settings, any advise for what and how to backup what is on there so I have minimal work to get it back to this state (hopefully without the glitches)?
I have had both internal and external SD mounted over Mass Storage and done an error check from Windows on them which found no errors, as I suspected it was corruption on internal SD but clearly not.
The weird thing is, other than the above the phone works fine - but its fairly useless when I can't type on it and I am concerned the widgets hanging is degrading the battery life.
Flash a clean stock rom and see if it fixes it

I actually figured out what is wrong and its bizarre. It was my router!
Basically I upgraded DD-WRT to the latest version (which has since been taken offline so obviously buggy) and it caused all the above symptoms. The instant I disconnected from WiFi all events which were meant to happen suddenly happened all at the same time, then everything was back to normal. Connect to WiFi and it hangs again.
I have no idea how a bug on my router can cause such a wide variety of problems but there you go. Downgraded the router back to the previous firmware and all is well again.
I briefly had the "no text input" error happening after i removed some bloatware with root explorer. It was really starting to irritate me but when i turned the phone on it's side it worked again and has never stuffed up since!
Just thought I'd share my experience.

Well unfortunately I was wrong, problem started again today and I even tested at a friends house. Basically, when connected to WiFi my phone goes AWOL with widgets hanging and text input randomly stopping working.
Earlier to search marketplace I had to disconnect from WiFi, type the search string, reconnect, purchase, disconnect (it refused to download) and use HSDPA instead. This is really frustrating as I'm about to get 40Mbit broadband which is going to suck being forced to use T-Slowbiles pathetic 1Mbit HSDPA to download instead. Perhaps not the end of the world, but its really really weird.

A simple solution to the wifi issues in ICS roms

So this is a nontehnical solution to fix your wifi troubles. While your phone is on, turn the wifi off and then reboot the phone. When the phone comes back the wifi will still be off but you will be able to switch it on and off. If you reboot the phone with your wifi on, then your wifi issues will come back when you turn the phone off. I've used this technique for the last two days on AOKP v2 but if all of the ICS roms are using the same kernel then this should work in every rom.

Unfortunately I have not been able to reproduce this result. This method works for me and is reliable and I'm sure it can help others as well. I've tried turning the auto sync on and off and that did not help either.
I noticed that if it gets "STUCK" turning it on or off, if you wait long enough in the actual wifi settings not the notification bar or in the initial wifi settings (where it lists the available networks) you will see that the top button will eventually be able to be used. I am talking like a few minutes. Of course it would probably be quicker to restart the phone.

Which is why rebooting the phone with the wifi turned off is the simple solution for me.

[Q] strange wifi problem

hi everyone i have some questions about wifi on this tab my at home wifi works great but when out and about today i was at one of the VA buildings trying to connect to the open network but all it did was save the connection it never tried at all to connect
strange isnt
is the types of wifi signals that this tablet cant use?
is there wifi connections that only let serton types of devices connect to them evan thoght it says open network security?
of does hickups like this just happen sometimes?
hay i would love to answer your question
hay lanic have you had this problem befor BLA BLA BLA
22 views and no one has any helpfull info or answers PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADDVICE !!!!!
What does the wifi icon look like when you're not able to connect?
I've had intermittent issues where my tab will drop off my home wifi. The icon in the corner is (best I can describe it) entirely gray with no 'pie pieces'. If it happens again, maybe I can screenshot it. This usually occurred after waking up the tablet (e.g. never while using the tab).
The weird thing is that, during this time, I'm able to use wifi analyzer and see the signal strength and it looks normal. If I disable and re-enable wifi, it sometimes comes back for a short time, other times it goes back to no signal immediately. If I go into the wifi settings and select my home wifi then select connect, I'll usually see a brief error pop up regarding 'could not connect'. Again, maybe I can grab a screenshot the next time it happens. I've had this issue with the BAKED Blackbeans and with CM10 ROMs, and rebooting has usually fixed the issue.
Long story short, I no longer use any wifi controls when the tab is asleep. The BAKED ROM has some controls in its settings, and I was also using the GO TaskManager which also has controls for wifi in sleep mode. Since then, the issue hasn't reoccurred.
Good luck.

Push Notifications - Don't work on mobile data

Not sure if anyone can help, or if it's been covered before but I'm a new oneplus 6 user and have scoured these forums, oneplus, reddit etc and cannot find a working solution to my problem.
I currently have no real issues receiving push notifications on wifi, however mobile data is different. Once the screen has been locked for a small period of time I stop receiving push notifications. When I wake the phone some will show up, some won't show until the relevant app is opened.
Advanced battery optimisation is off.
Individual apps I want notifications from all have battery optimisation set to "Do not optimise".
I have cleared the phone cache through recovery mode.
All notification settings for the apps are on, background data on etc.
There is no option for doze mode in developer mode to turn off.
I have a Tesco Mobile and a 3 sim card. The issue seems worse with the Tesco mobile sim card. The 3 one seems to work better but slowly reverts to the same issue the Tesco one has. I've tried other people's tesco sim cards and replaced my own but none have worked.
Any help would be appreciated, it's driving me mad.
Just to make sure, under Advanced optimization settings there are two switches which are "Advanced Optimization" and "Sleep standby optimization", keeping the latter off might be the problem. Though if they're both off, I assume that it's just the native Doze working to save battery

Yes both are turned off. Do you know of anyway to turn off this "native doze". As a football (soccer) fan, I want instant score notifications for games, I used to get these fine on my iphone 6 but now I have to wake my phone all the time to get them to come up, even then sometimes they don't come through for another 15-20mins.
Have you tried settings in Wifi preferences?

I've looked in there but can't see anything that would affect mobile data. The notifications work ok when on wi-fi. I've checked mobile data settings and there are no settings for the apps in question which would restrict data usage.

Is this happening to all apps (ex. social apps like twitter or whatever) or just the football app? If it's the latter it should be a problem with that specific app. While if it's the former case, It should be something system-wide, so I'd recommend doing a factory reset maybe?
Btw my phone performs the same as yours with the "sleep standby optimization" on, while it operates as normal with it off, so your case seems pretty hilarious :/
I've experienced on all apps, it's most noticeable on the football one as you can time the push notifications exactly so can tell when they're late but WhatsApp, facebook messenger etc both the same. It seems as if the device just goes into a form of heavy sleep mode after around 5mins of lock. I've tried a factory reset already and nothing changed. OP have advised me to try and reinstall the OS but I don't hold any hope. It's almost as if the phone cuts off all mobile data after 5mins of downtime.

If factory resetting doesn't solve the problem then reflashing the system likely wouldn't either I suppose.
I still have two options in mind that you may be able to try.
First option is to use apps like "Doze" or "Naptime" both on play store, and mess with those advanced Doze settings to try to disable the function itself and see if it works.
The other would be to try the new HydrogenOS P beta or other custom Roms such as Havoc and see if they don't have this problem.
If neither of these work, I really have no other ideas
But I think these are worth giving a try though

I tried the Naptime app but that required root and doze didn't seem to do anything.
I've now tried Android P beta. Exactly the same issue. Once the phone has been locked for a few minutes all updates stop. Once I unlock the phone I get flooded with notifications. So frustrated.

no idea dude sorre
I'm having the same problem
I have similar but different issue with a few apps that I don't use often.
The push notifications only come through the second I put my phone on charge

Which mobile networks are you on? I found the issue to be resolved when using an o2 SIM card instead of my Tesco mobile one
Edit: Since this I have tried again with an o2 sim card and it didn't resolve the issue. Leads believe it's an issue with my handset.
Since few days, i have the same problem here, i try severall things but no solution at the moment.
I also had notification issues. Then I installed the stock rom of this topichttps://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-6-t3796665 and my notification returned to normal
my notification come onl;y when i turn my screen on -> https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/help/notification-android-p-stable-t3849170
I have this issue and I can't understand why more people aren't complaining about it.
Don't suppose your apps are restored from some kind of backup?
EDIT: Okay, people are complaining about it: https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/push-notification-issues.451149/page-121
have this exact same issue on my note 8 with android pie on vodafone network and so far nothing seems to help or fix the same really frustrating.
did you manage to find any solutions so far ?

Is my phone on the way out??

Hi All,
I've had the phone about 8 months, UK model.
About 2 months ago, when scrolling in Wikipedia pages on Chrome browser, the display would alternate between normal and blue light (eye comfort). It still does occasionally.
From a few weeks ago, the keyboard sometimes take about 10s to appear.
A few days ago when on voice call from the phone other person can't hear me but I can them while voice call on Whatsapp is fine both ways. Restarting phone seems to solved it for now.
Then yesterday while trying to access settings from either the home screen or app drawer, it fails but you can see its attempting to as you see the settings screen momentarily then a message comes up saying settings failed to start several times and whether to restore by clearing history. Doing that doesn't work. The only way that I can is to touch and hold the settings icon till the search option comes up and then type the particular setting I want.
Before I do anything to fix this, are these symptoms an indication the phone is on the way to a complete breakdown? Would it be a software problem and I suppose the 1st step to fix is factory reset.
Has anyone experience this on their phone?

Unfortunately it's the Oppo software that causes these issues... We hope we can unlock the bootloader soon and flash custom roms to remedy these problems since Oppo are just incompetent.
Chrome colour shift is fixed by typing into your chrome address bar and type: "chrome://flags" then search "Dynamic Color Gamut" and set it to disabled (or it was enabled, I forget since I didn't have the issue myself)
Oppo uses the wrong microphone on third party apps like whatsapp, signal, instagram etc. and we have to wait for an update to fix that. (Issue has been posted here before)
The rest of the issues you described sound like some software instability caused by the Android 11 update. You should save your data and do a factory reset.
If the issues persist after the reset and you didn't install any dodgy apps or modified the software using adb then consider sending the phone in for repair.
OK thanks for replies. So factory reset then...
