[Q] Rooting Nobis (Digiin) NB7850S? - General Questions and Answers

This is a 7.85" 1024x768 tablet running Android 4.4. That's 4.4.nothing. It's not the 7" or the 9" Nobis tablet. Staples has sold a bajillion of these nice aluminum cased tablets and so far it looks like nobody has done anything towards rooting this model. Web searches get "You *really* meant this *other* Nobis 7" or 9" tablet, right?" or "helpful" suggestions that I meant rooting some completely different Android device. (Web search engines are rapidly becoming nearly useless for finding obscure data.)
Tried framaroot 1.9.3, Cydia Impactor, RootX and TowelRoot. Negative result all around. Yes, I did have USB debugging and unknown locations checked on the tablet. Nothing can find it via ADB, even after installing the Android dev kit on x64 Win 7 and manually starting the ADB server.

If I can get a guarantee that I'll get the tablet back, I'll send it to someone to root it. Or I'll sell it at a good price. Such a shame that this sturdy, good performing and extremely plentiful tablet has been totally ignored by the Android dev and hacking community.

Got Chamelon v3 AOKP Booting (N7100)

I got Chamelon v3 AOKP booting on my Note 2 (based on UBDLL3).
For those who don't know Chamelon: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847600
My problems are:
1. Everything FCs...
2. Status Bar wont show up
Works:
1. Before the app FCs, it works
2. Camera showed up (didn't check it to much, as other apps kept FCing in the background..)
3. You can hold the S Pen button and draw on the screen to cut screen (I guess popup note etc. will work if I remembered to copy its APK.. haha)
I guess all hardware is working properly as I didn't change any framework/drivers. (Yes, I only replaced APKs, but its still porting... no? :silly: )
So my point is: is there any expert developer that wants to work on this? Giving us 100% AOSP look, AOKP features and all Samsung features (S Note, popup note, smart stay, smart rotation, multiview etc.)?
I guess its framework problem, but I'm not really sure. I'm not an expert developer... I'm still learning
(I cannot post the zip yet, as I'm waiting for a permission from jazzk )
EDIT: I've got an idea how to maybe fix it!!!!
I'll update when I'm done
EDIT2: Didn't work... I guess there is more job than what I can do
If there is any expert dev who would like to do something like that, a lot of people would love that
(I think devs for N7100 and I9300 could work on this together..)
I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO FIX FC, PLEASE DON'T ASK.. I WISH I KNEW HOW TO FIX, BUT I DON'T..
Maybe there is something in the updater-script, like a set-perm or something ?

I don't think its that simple...
I'm almost 100% sure there should be framework modding. At the original rom there are no special permissions given.

What device did you port from?

It's not exactly a port because I copied the APKs from the original version for the Galaxy S2. I think they FC because there are no framework changes.

Forgot about that...
I hope I'll have time tomorrow to flash again the rom and get a logcat.

I believe the framework-res.apk need to be modded to work. I notice at least 1000++ new png files added. That's a lot of works to do

I'm just learning java and android development, I cannot fix problems like these..
I hope eventually some dev will do this kind of things.
I remember when I had my Desire HD, there were a lot of porters! We got roms from the One series (of 2012, not the HTC One) roms, sensation, evo 3d and more.
Sadly I don't see this kind of development here in the Note II (except the Note 10.1 port). Maybe cus' its new and there's nothing really to port, or we just don't have this kind of devs. I really don't know, and I hope when there will be a real need of porting when we will need them. (not now that we have the newest versions all the time because this is Samsung's Note series flagship)

I also had a Desire HD n yes the development on tht phone was amazing thnx to awesome devs on desire HD forum having said that we also hv good devs here but the problem is tht the source code of s3 is either unavailble or incomplete unlike DHD where everything was availble so everything was possible. Its all coz of samsung tht we dnt see so much development or it is slow.thy arnt really GPU compliant.thy use an open source software but whn it comes to giving back something thy just become deaf dumb and stupid.
Simple example of unavailbilty of souce code can be Cynogenmod. Nearly after 1 yr of launching s3 still doesnt hv a stable cm build.
Its all samsung from begining to end. Htc is much better in this regard thts y my next phone will never be samsung.

I know Samsung are annoying with this. Did thought about it effecting the development, didn't connect things haha
Anyway, after a friend of mine got the HTC One today, I'm not buying Samsung anymore! I don't know if HTC (no S-OFF is very annoying!!), but definitely not Samsung.
I wish Sony had better devices and a lot of devs over here on XDA.
so hows development of this rom going?

I'm not working on it. I do not know how to do it as I'm a beginner in Java.
I was looking for someone to make this working, I think all that needed is a framework change and maybe some apps, but I'm not sure about it.
Man I'd so kill to get this fully working on a Note 2

Also present:

/system/xbin/su
/system/app/Term.apk (v1.0.3)
If you can find a way to start this terminal (activity com.android.term/.Term)
perhaps a Diag mode? and then start /system/xbin/su
So everything looks ok for adb. But if it is passed through USB?
You can try adb over Wifi if you know the ip address of your Pono.
EDIT: just learned Pono has no wifi...
Recovery mode? I see /sdcard/package.zip in /system/bin/recovery binary.
/package.zip
Choose a package to install:

Good luck.
mhm package.zip is new to me, that would be very helpful if that works, i will try to install a rom using that location instead of internal storage/.pono/anyrom.update
I have a launcher already installed and a customized rom.
I can flash stuff using android test-key signed rom zip's
Why would they have ADB running if there's no way to access it? I have tried what I can to access it over USB, but so far no luck.
I repartitioned my internal SD card and lost access to my player. The player boots fine, but it just shows 0.0 GB of 0.0 GB free and won't prompt me to mount the disks as mass storage when I plug it to my PC, so I can't repartition the storage again. Therefore I need ADB access

Maybe this option is missing to get adb to work:
persist.sys.usb.config=mass_storage,adb
nope, tried that option aswell already, adbd on the device is running tough...
i wonder if there is another unpropagated USB connection inside the pono just for debugging stuff...
old firmware file?
does anyone have a copy of a pre 1.0.6 firmware update file. since 1.0.6 the internal storage is mega slow - and have searched high and low to see if i could roll back. thanks in advance.
Hi everyone,
I know this thread is 6 years old, but...
I'm realizing that I'm not using my Pono for years, mostly because of the incomplete UI. I'm more a developer than an Android expert, so I'd like some help in order to get started.
I have basic knowledge of Android (adb, apk, all that wizardry), basic reverse skills and pretty good knowledge of Linux.
So here is my questions to you
- How did Psych0_D0g extract the logcat logs? To me, having logcat means that he did actually make adb work.
- how did he extract the recovery log? I didn't find any was to boot into recovery (pressing volume Up and boot, or volume down, or both..)
Next step for me will be able to generate a firmware update image in order to add/remove what I need..
Thanks for any help!

[Completed] [Q] Rooting Nobis (Digiin) NB7850S?

This tablet has a 7.85" 1024x768 screen, front and rear cameras. It's different from the other Nobis tablets with 7" or 9" screens. Staples has been selling tons of them. Quite a nice tablet with aluminum housing.

You can check the most popular/common rooting methods, e.g.:
