Anybody that used to have a Verizon S4 now with an M8 notice any difference with radio (data and phone) reception? The S4 is average and not a standout for signal reception. I would expect the S5 to be like the S4 for reception.
New device pixie dust can bias opinion until the pixie dust effect wears off, but hoping for some obectivity
m8 has better signal then my note 3 and i thought note 3 had about the same maybe slightly better then s4
I'm feeling like i get a stronger single on the M8 than the S4. Granted the LTE signal isn't that strong out here but the M8 maybe adds another bar for me.
HTCs radios are superior to Samsung's period end of story. HTCs hardware and build quality are superior end of story. Now Samsung makes the bomb tv's though!

I'm coming from the S3 on Verizon. My phone would die after 5 hours in my house due to terrible reception. I can now make it 1.5 days with moderate use in my home without having to charge it. I can even send text messages from my couch now. Weee

A little off topic and it's by no means scientific...but I'm in a very good LTE area and in the basement my DNA still gets 1-2 bars of LTE...the M8 only gets 3G..and if I force LTE only...no connection on the M8.
So I'd say my DNA has better signal reception...but then again I'm getting a new replacement M8 tomorrow as this one randomly reboots all the time...so I'll reserve final judgement until I have a proper working M8
The M8 has a better radio, with support for AWS bands so that it can connect to Verizon's LTE-A network. Faster speeds + less people using the network = profit for us

The S4 also has AWS support.
i always found the best antenna on Motorola phones followed by HTC, then samsung. In my basement I get good signal with the maxx i had, sketchy signal with my s3 and s4, and acceptable signal from the m8.

The S3 and S4 both have awful power efficiency in bad signal areas. Battery sucking demons, so I turn the data radios off in weak signal areas to avoid a hot running, battery drained device.
Apparently the M8 and S5 are both much better in this regard, but Samsung is not known for radio reception as a strength.

Perhaps the metal is limiting somewhat, in spite of the plastic strips?
Not exactly what you're looking for, but coming from a GNex to the M8, the M8 has better reception. Not MUCH, but better. My M8 still goes down to 3G sometimes when I know I'm in a 4g area (and where I've previously had 4g, like sitting at my desk at work), and in my house I still only get 2-3 bars of 4g. When I'm walking the dog though, the signal appears to be better. I used to get 1 bar if I was lucky, now I'm usually getting 2-3 bars.
LTE just has very poor signal penetration as compared to actual 4G, so if you're inside a building, the signal won't be fantastic.
That being said, Samsung's radios have definitely gotten better in the last few years, but Motorola and HTC are definitely still better (Motorola more so, I believe).
I'd have to say the opposite of what most are, I finally copied over all my data to my M8 from my S4 and both phones are sitting next to each other on a table, and the S4 was getting 3/4 bars, when I took out the SIM and put it in the M8, the signal now shows 1-2 bars. All the time only one phone's radio was on at a time, so there's no interference between the 2 phones.
I've always had poorer signal with Samsung phones. Even including wifi.
Apple and Motorola phones have always treated me well.
From my observations, this M8 is on par with any other phone I've ever owned. Wifi reception is great even in my backyard (no signal with any samsung phone ever). Cellular reception is always good as well.

The actual dB signal showing rather than bars is usually the best measurment. I noticed the M8 seemed a few dB points weaker than the S4, but only tested 15minutes in that regard (I mainly tested with game emulators). Not a good sample. Concern I have is the metal design, but the plastic strips provide a window. iPhone 5 is metal too and has good signal.
Never got these numbers with my s4 with my

Bars mean nothing. It's a non-standard way of representing the signal. Better to see the dBm reading.

Just chiming in here to say that I've noticed the same thing with my HTC One max. My DNA was an absolute champ, and very possibly my favorite phone I've ever owned. The reception was fantastic, I don't recall seeing 3G on that for the entire year that I used it as my daily driver.
Moving to the metal One max, however, I am dropping into 3G on a daily basis. I contacted HTC support about it, and they said it shouldn't be happening that frequently where I live (Chicago suburbs) so they sent me a warranty replacement. It behaves the same way. I've tried replacing the SIM card as well, and nothing has improved the data reception.
My wife still uses her DNA daily, and she doesn't experience the same issues that I do, so I have to assume it's the metal case on my One max, or something else hardware-related.
Hi
So I recently upgraded to the standard S6, and I've been experiencing very, very bad cellular signal reception. At places I would have good (or sometimes even great) signal with all the LTE phones I've owned throughout the last months (iPhone 5, Xperia Z1, Lumia 920), I'm getting very poor or even no signal at all. Not to mention mobile data basically not working at all.
As far as my research goes, I'm definitely not the only one experiencing issues like this. Even a friend of mine who bought the same S6 on the same carrier with the same contract has experienced similar issues. Though there seem to be a lot of "affected" phones, there isn't really much of a solution available online, so I figured one of you might be able to help.
Would really appreciate any tips and workarounds, or even some more people having issues like that with their S6's.
Cheers!
I've just purchased a Galaxy S6 and it is without doubt the worst phone for reception I have ever owned.
My 4G signal at my home on my old Galaxy S5 was always 3 to 4 bars on my S6 im lucky to get between 1 to 2 bars.
It would help if you told us where you live, what carrier you're with, what model s6 you have, is it carrier branded or international unlocked, have you talked to your carrier's customer service, etc. Without any info it just sounds like Samsung bashing.
I get less bars than with my moto x2014 but I get 4g+ instead of 4g and 4g+ is faaaaassssst
Mine is exactly the same signal bars as every phone i've owned but has much faster data and clearer calls.
I would say you either have a bad phone, bad network, or issues with a mobile mast in the area etc etc.
Comparing to past phones is useless because what worked yesterday might not work today. Intermittent issues anyone?
Mine is currently in repair for poor signal. I doubt they will fix it, I think they designed the S6 antennas extremely poorly.
Forgot to update this thread, sorry. I recently sent it in (ofc covered by warranty), and it is far better now, but still not quite as good as on the other mentioned phones, HSDPA is still pretty slow right now and I rarely get LTE. So if you're facing simmilar problems, even though I always hat to do it, I recommend you send it in to Samsung. Also, consider asking your carrier to give you a newer SIM-card since that could be a reason to from what I've heard.
We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the Huawei Nexus 6P's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.
Using on AT&T, signal strength is good. And it has band 30 which will be good in the future when they get that rolled out.
Using on Verizon. With my old Note 3 and also my work iPhone 6 Plus, at work where the signal is terrible, it would switch to 3G periodically. With the 6p, i haven't had a single instance where it switched to 3G. Just for kicks, i put in my coworker's T-mobile sim card. He has iPhone 6 Plus and he gets 1 bar on his iPhone and i saw 3 bars
LTE on T-mobile - good strength compared to my Nexus 5 - can get LTE in some areas where I did not before. Shows full bars though LTE discovery shows different strength levels on band 4. Waiting for band 12 support to see full impact and hopefully with carrier aggregation to give better throughput.

Yup same here. this thing gets better signal at work (in a 12 story building) than my Note 4 on VZ. just to be sure it isn't a software bs thing. I tested speedtest and it pulls 7-8 mbs vs 1.5-3 mbs before (note4). So not sure which of the two VZ freq it pulls from normal or XLTE but the radios/antenae seems stronger than the note 4. in any event, I am quite happy and satisfied with my signal!! (orange county, calif)
T-Mobile signal at my desk at work has been inconsistent with my past two phones (Moto X 2014 and G4), but the 6P manages to hold on to LTE more often than the other two did. It also seems to switch back to LTE from HSPA+ quicker.
The biggest difference is HSPA+ performance. With both the Moto X and G4, HSPA+ performance was always awful, to the point that I just figured T-Mobile's HSPA+ spectrum was too saturated to provide decent results. The 6P manages to get much better data throughput in these conditions, so I am loving that.
LTE performance seems to be on par with the other phones, but with so many changes in the network, I never know if it's the phone or new things going on in the network.
I noticed that the signal strength is far superior than what i was getting on my S6 Edge. The 6P gets signal in places my S6 didn't so im a very! very! happy camper.
Cell reception has been pretty bad on mine so far...
Could anyone check if covering the visor area with your hand affects cell signal? (You will inevitably cover part of it when holding the phone horizontally with both hands or just the left hand) On my phone, just loosely covering the visor area with my hand lowers signal by one to two bars, and lowers data transfer rate from ~16MBps to less than 10MBps..
Of course it does. Every phone has an area or two that allow you to really hurt the signal by covering them with your hand.
WIthout a doubt the cell signal is far superior to that of the Nexus 6 that I replaced. This was easily seen driving down the road which with the Shamu would have areas that there was no signal at all, yet with the 6P I had at a minimum 2 bars all the way up and down the road. Even in my house where I had to switch to WiFi calling because of so many trees , I also get a good LTE signal throughout the house.
WiFi performance itself is amazing as it is literally faster than my $4k gaming laptop. This is what I got on my 300 connection

I used to see this with my Nexus 6 and G4 all the time. I had to use LTE Discovery and its Auto Cycle feature to stay on LTE longer at work. With the 6P, if it does drop out of LTE, it recovers a lot quicker than all the other phones.
Coming from my Nexus 6, I have much better reception everywhere in the Phoenix Valley

I am on AT&T and I am finding myself getting better LTE reception than ever before. My previous phone was an Xperia Z3 and the 6P is definitely superior.
Way better signal than the Moto X 2014 or Oneplus One!
I'm on Verizon and have not had a chance to test it in my fringe areas. I do have a Wilson signal booster in the house and my Note 4 would typically show a signal strength of -84 to -86db. The Nexus 6P is consistently in the mid -70s. (Lower is better)
My cell reception is amazing.. Texts in and out of the depths of where I work.. Voice quality was muffled at times but seems better with root
I have a Nexus 6 & ordered a 6P using it on Verizon. Is the reception about the same? The 6 was my first moto phone & had much better reception than my LG G2 (previous phone). Will I lose call quality?
On t-mobile for the most part I am getting good signal. But....
I am noticing that many times I drop my LTE connection and just get HSPA and or 3g....
I am also loosing my LTE signal and a point that the cell site is close by so it is not because of weak signal.
I looked at coverage maps and used an app called LTE discovery I don't see the new T-Mobile bands here in Atlanta yet... Maybe that will help..
LTE has been great for me here in Irvine CA, got 84 Mbps download. WiFi speeds are good too, but WiFi range is much worse than my nexus 5. Bluetooth range isbworse too. My n5 keeps my WiFi signal down at my street corner, 6p loses thebwifi half way there. Same with Bluetooth, it loses bt signl half distance that my n5 does.
Anyone can test the tmobile lte signal please. Just wonder if it is the same like other phones.
Hmmm and what abound band 71? Does actually works?
My wife has an iPhone 7 Plus and I have a new OnePlus 6 and her phone works fine in areas with TMobile where my OnePlus 6 can't get a call out. So far I love the OnePlus 6, but this may be a deal breaker for me as I am running into several dead zones with the OnePlus 6 that my wife’s iPhone works fine. Too bad as I really like this phone.

I'm using the OnePlus 6 on t mobile and get great reception and lte speeds. Can't test band 71 as I don't live in an area where band 71 is deployed but from other threads people have said it is working. Call quality, signal strength and lte speeds match that of previous phones I've used and better than a lot of them. There are also other threads on here and other sites stating that signal strength is really good with the OnePlus 6 on t mobile.

The signal strength doesn't reflect upon reliablility of signal or speed. You could have low bars and still max out on data transfer and network.

That's not necessarily true lower signal strength usually means lower speed. In terms of being reliable yes it's fine but as far as actual lte speeds they are generally lower

Have you double checked the APN settings are setup correctly? https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2090
Also, it's true that you can't rely solely on the number of bars as an indicator of signal quality. I use an app called Network Cell Info to see what kind of signal I am really getting- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wilysis.cellinfolite
Mine works great. Usually have full bars full LTE speed.
I have a OP6 and my wife has an S8+ and we get about the same reception in the house (I'm in a weak service area) which is around -115db to -117db. She drops slightly more calls than I do but It seems like the signal on the OP6 is on par with everything else.
Compared to my V30 & G6 (bith TMO branded)
The antenna in the OP6 is quite good. I get LTE even underground at a train station I usually don't with my V30.
For WiFi i get 400mbps and LTE I usually get ahout 150mbps. I see 50mbps in my basement though.

I actually checked APN settings which appear fine. I do not use just the signal bats, I go into signal strength and the OP6 show signal strength of -118dbm which is very low. Also I find I am in dead spot far more often where my wife is. It, maybe there is an I tenal antenna issue or bad phone, it I am disappointed.
I don't have issues. Compared to other phones I have similar results.
My OP6 is much better then my OP5. Before selling my 5 I used the same sim card in both and my living room is the best signal in my house and my 5 got 48MBPS down and in the same spot on same sim I got 135MBPS down with the OP6. The combination of both the glass back and the 4x4MIMO is amazing!
My wife has an s9+ and I have a op6 on metro (T-Mobile) in rural Pennsylvania. We both get good signal but mine is always faster and stronger than hers. Comparative to my old phones, op6 is above and beyond.

How are speeds on Verizon.
In India, on Vodafone-Idea connection. If it switches from 4G to 2G (Edge) due to poor signal strength, it doesn't recover to 4G in area of higher signal strength. It remains on Edge. I had to enter the testing menu (*#*#4366#*#*) and then select preferred network as LTE Only. Then it switched to full strength 4G.
Verizon Speeds are very nice so far
Overall internet speed is satisfying but the antenna in OnePlus 6T is weak I think. At work my friend sitting next me has an Iphone 7 Plus and he gets the signal and I dont. We are both on T-Mobile and both phones support all the T-Mobile bands. The only way for me to get signal at work is to use wifi calling option. According to OnePlus: Even if a device supports some or all of the required frequencies for this carrier, it will not be able to connect unless the device is approved for this network. So that means my OnePlus 6T supports all the bands but T-Mobile dont have them enabled for my phone? I purchased mine directly from OnePlus

This is certainly something that I would like to know more about. As while I am at work my LG G5 does not have signal, while my IPhone work phone does have signal. Also, while driving home my LG G5 drops calls, while my work IPhone does not drop calls. Both phones are through Verizon.
I really want a phone that gets a strong signal/reception. I am concerned that I will have the same problem with the 6T as I have with my current LG, compared to my work IPhone.
As far as speed/throughput on Verizon, the OP6t blows my Axon 7 out of the water. at my house, in an area where i was lucky to have 200kb/s on my back porch, i get substantially better speeds and connections. two factors are at play. One- on Verizon, the OP6t is used as a 'cdma-less" device which means the phone/radio only is focusing on LTE signal instead of tying to switch from 3g to LTE and back, etc. Two: glass back. People list this as a qualm with the device bc of no wireless charging being present, but its for radio transmission/reception, not Qi wireless. glass is so much better than metal in this regard.
I now get service everywhere i did with Axon 7, but also in places where the Axon had spotty connections at best, the One Plus 6t gets respectable connections/speed. Case and point, i used to miss calls from work when i had been on call (medical) and with OP6T in the same location/times/etc i get flawless coverage. The speed is not brag worthy at my house, but blows that 200kb/s crap out of the water. a side note, i have the slowest/cheapest single line unlimited plan Vzw offers, so YMMV if you have a premium data plan. this phone has reminded me why i live verizon coverage and speeds. I had Tmobile for a couple of months and where i live in Upstate SC, Verizon is unbeatable for reliability as i am all over the upstate for my work and never hit a dead area until i crest the Appalachians. then its topography and physics, not the phone or network.
could not be happier.

I think it was surpassed that pixel...I could be wrong but one plus is always been at the top of the game when it came to uploads downloads and just all-around quickness thay are amazing phones for the price..,. And I'm a fan of the Google phones, but I think the OnePlus it smoke it's boots....... This is one way to look at it, look at one plus on eBay used. You could sell it a week after and you're not going to lose Harley anything for money..look at the phones that are a year old how much they still are they keep their value and are great phones... And this is just my honest opinion. And I played with a lot of flagships
One thing I've noticed with the device is the rf performance shows poorly in the signal department compared to other devices. However, a big difference is not just the numbers, say -117dBm vs -110 dBm on my s8+ but how the device performs at those numbers.
As an example.
My s8+barely gets service around -115dBm but my one plus at -120dBm will still work, all be it a bit slowly.
This is the first device I've noticed working at levels like that.
