if u open the apk as an archive, there are two files that contain the package name
"application.ini"
"androidmanifest.xml"
so u could try changing the values there and see if it works

You can right click on the file - open with - and it should open with notepad. Yes you need to save it as unicode but even then you will find it will not work. You need to use a hexeditor and delete the first ff and fe as these are added when saving with notepad.
Would u please explain more, how to find this FF & FE?
I know how to nba files only
Thanks

I tried it without removing those 2 values and it always hangs the device. If in doubt check the file (before and after editing with notepad) with a hex editor and you will see ff and fe are added.

I'm sure I did change the file without doing the removing of FF & FE and it works normaly
But no prob., next time I will try meschle advise
I discovered that the best way to edit any unicode file is by using an old program called editpad (free version copy attached here: ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1130485#post1130485 ) that allows to do, among many other things, to convert unicode to ansi and back to unicode without destroying the file structure. I feel sure many will find this very useful. Also it can be used as direct replacement for notepad by just rename it notepad.exe and over write your window one (or rename it before copying).

[Q] How to browse an .apk on your desktop?

Hello everyone. Although n00bs aren't allowed here, I do want to ask you a question that might be very n00bish. And maybe a little inappropriate. Or asked in the wrong section of this forum.
But here it goes: I want to try and edit a savegame for a game on my HTC Hero (baseball superstar 2010). So, first I tried to locate where all the files for this game could be installed on my phone. I did not succeed.
But with help from this forum, I found out that I might find the files by using Astro File Manager. I can use this app to click on the .apk from the game, that I have on my sdcard, and then choose the option 'browse file'. There, I find a lot of files! So, the first problem is solved.
The second problem is, that I cannot edit any of the files I then find. And I cannot find a file that has the datestamp of today, or yesterday, when I last played the game. Shouldn't there be a very recent file with the saved game data in it somewhere?
For me, it would be a lot easier if I could browse the apk on my desktop with a simple explorer. But if I hook up my sd-card to my pc, I cannot open the .apk. How can I accomplish this?
I hope I gave a decent description of my problems, and hopefully anyone can help me with A) finding out which file to edit B) how to open or edit this file and C) what to edit!
Thank you all in advance for your time and patience.
Use 7zip to open/extract the .apk file. You can use winrar too, but I like 7zip better. I'll try to find a link in a minute, or you can always google it if I don't post back quick enough for you.
Your questions are reeallly noobish ;-P
Apk files store libraries and other static files of your applications - there you could find images, texts, code, etc., but not runtime data like savegames. Look into /data/{package-name}/ - you could find package name in many places, I think it's in Settings -> Manage applications, but I'm not sure.
Very noobish yes
I have done something in the meanwhile, and that is: buy the real deal from the market. I no longer seem to have the .apk, but that should be no problem. Now the real game is officially installed onto my phone.
But ... where? I have tried looking in /data with my file managers, but they say that the folder is empty! So... where are my apps installed then? They must be on my phone somewhere. Do I have to root my phone in order to see anything in the /data/folder?

I'm not sure, but I think so. This directory is read-protected, so apps can't steal data of other apps. And I've mistaken: it's /data/app/{package-name}.
Hmmm. Do you know a good way to do that? I have a HTC Hero with the 2.1-update1 firmware (so my phone tells me!).

I think I'm correct in saying yes. I use RootExplorer and can see my apks in data/app, but if I use AndExplorer I can't.

Hi There,
I've opened another thread to stop the clutter, but: I have installed Root Explorer and used (I thought) Universal Androot to root my mobile phone. It did install Superuser, but when I open Root Explorer, I don't get a prompt to put it on the superuser list... so nothing seems to work. Do you know what I should do, and how I can do that?

You might be best searching your phones forum for a solution unless someone can offer you help here.
Iirc, savedata and settings would be in /data/data/com.gamevil.bs2010/
probably in a folder named "files".
start by looking in there.
other apps would be in /data/data/[packagename]

That's the problem, you need to sign it first. - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069287
Thanks so much !! I will try this now
Hi
I followed your Topic, i was able to decompile it...but i can't recompile it
can you please do it for me ? cuz i'm in a hurry i need it by Wednesday..
You just have to replace the train480x320.png
in \res\drawable with the same image that i have uploaded with the rar file and sign it..
That would be perfect
thanks in advance

Trying to convert apk to gpk

Hope this is ok to ask, I am hitting a brick wall..
I'll try and include as much detail as possible, so apologies if it's a bit long.
I am trying to convert apk to gpk - two apps in particular; MX Player and ES File Explorer
I have downloaded a tool with instructions from another forum using google translate from Burmese to English, but it's not perfect and still very hard to understand.
The name of the tool is GPKMaker.
From the instructions, I think I need the APK and the Data file folder from the same device that I am trying to install the gpk on. But I don't know how I would get the latter without installing it first..
I tried to use the MX Player Data folder
- com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad From another device to make the gpk.
I have attached a jpeg of instructions that also came with the tool (In Burmese - I can't translate).
From what I can make out, this is what I am required to have to make it work\install correctly:
(Using MX Player as the example)
FOLDER - MXPlayer with a subfolder and .ini file inside it
MXPlayer
game.ini
And inside the subfolder
MXPlayer.gpk
MXPlayer.png (Logo)
MXPlayer.xml
I have done that, and inside the game.ini file I have this written:
[MXPlayer]
package=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad
version=1.7.40
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
and inside the XML file I have this written:
<?xml version="1.0" ?>
<Files>
<item type="gpp" path="MXPlayer.apk" offset="0" size="9976082"></item>
</Files>
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
I then place the main MXPlayer folder on the device I want to install it on, it appears and begins to install, but then stops and doesn't seem to go any further.
I'm guessing where I'm making the main mistake is the data folder.
But I can't find how or where I may get the correct folder from, would it have to be the same chipset? Or would the same cpu be sufficient?
I have tried the same steps above with the ES File Explorer and get the exact same results.
Hopefully someone can help me.
After searching extensively, I see GPK are also used for cracked/patching game files. But seems that would require the revers of what I am looking for.
As a result, there seems to be mutiple videos/links/programs for converting gpk to apk.
But no good to me, I want to convert into the file format everyone seems to be trying to get away from (typical)
Is this in the wrong subforum, or is nobody able to help?
I am really trying, but unfortunately getting nowhere.
Any reply may be helpful
[SOLVED] only if that's a real gpk file?
This is an easy fix.
That MXPlayer.gpk, is it a real .GPK file, not an .APK rename to a .gpk?
if it is a real .gpk, then you are not telling the device where the file is?
in your xml file you list MXPlayer.apk, but the file name is MXPlayer.gpk.
do that an you will the that it works.
(NOW) please tell me how did you convert an .APK file to a .GPK file, using that windows GPKMaker program?
please step-by-step.
Thanks.
