I've tried a couple of times to watch 1080p movies on the phone. Both times, the phone crashed after a stuttering sequence of images.
The first movie was the Fellowship of the Ring. MP4 file format.
File size : 5.6GB
Video bitrate : 3512 kbps
Audio codec : MPEG AAC
Audio bitrate : 317kbps
The second movie was Gravity, again MP4 file format.
File size : 3.08GB
Video bitrate : 4848 kbps
Audio codec : MPEG AAC
Audio bitrate : 640 kbps
I've tried to play the files on both MX Player as well as the stock player, with similar results. Both the movies stutter for a few seconds, sometimes showing the first few frames of the movie before the phone crashes. It woke up after a minute or so.
Also, when I'm on WiFi, sometimes the phone somehow turns on the mobile data on its own and I lose money.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Please reply. Everything is stock - I've not even rooted my device.
Bump.

It is because Galaxy S can't playback audio with 6 channels , i did not try this my self but that is what others observed.
Yes, I think it's limited to 5.1 channel audio encoded videos.
Also, that 4608kbps audio rate is awfully high.
Try using rockplayer and see if it works.
Was having a hard time w a video, wouldn't work in act1 nor the stock video player, worked great on rockplayer
Free on android market
Keep in mind Rockplayer is purely software player , it will not take advantage of phones Hardware acceleration , it will not play high resolution with good bitrate without dropping frames like crazy.
It would be better just to recode audio track.
I was just curious, because this was the same file that I had on my SD card that was in my BB Bold, which was able to play it???
There are plenty of posts on the net discussing whether Nexus S is able to record 720p however nobody is talking about whether Nexus S actually _can_ play 720p And when I tried it, it didn't went well.
I downloaded some 720p trailer (mov format), transcoded it using Handbrake to mp4 (I used some iPod/iPhone profile, I just set the resulution and quality to be preserved) and I copied both of them to my Nexus S.
Default video player can play only the mp4 file and the picture is very choppy. MoboPlayer can play both of them, but the mov file only in "soft decoding" mode. Funny is that the mov file is _much_ smoother than the mp4 file, it's not perfect but it looks almost as good as on my pc.
What am I doing wrong? I thought there should be some kind of hw acceleration for mp4 files...
Later I downloaded some 720p trailer directly in mp4 and it played well and very smooth. But the bitrate was just about 2500 kbps whereas the bitrate of the mp4 I was talking about before was about 6500 kbps... which I guess is the reason why it played so choppy. So 6500 kbps is too much and my Nexus S just can't play video in that quality?
And the last thing, the mov file uses the same codec as mp4 file (h264) so why the default player can play only mp4 files?
I have tried two xvid files and about every two minutes the sound cuts out. In order to carry on watching you need to skip that second of the video. The files are unrelated, I did not encode them myself and play fine on my pc. Using default media player on the sensation. Here is some details of the files.
Video: Xvid 624x352 23.98fps [Stream 00]
Audio: MPEG Audio Layer 3 48000Hz stereo 128kbps [Stream 01]
Anyone else getting something similar?

1080p MP4 files plays just fine.. But i'll transfer a 720x304 xvid with the same audio and see what happens
Edit: Yeah there is something buggy about xvid on the default player. It starts to play but if i try to fast forward it it says it can't play the video. Maybe it's not supported? Try one of the recomended players in another post here
both avi by the way if that makes a difference
I had the same issue with my sensation, I was referred to this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104685 and tried qqplayer and it worked fine though I couldn't get it to to switch views.
I looked but did not find anyone with same issue. If other people are getting the same problem I am happy to use another player as a work around for the moment. Just wanted to check if I was alone or not.
Add it to the bug list I suppose.
It should support it; XviD/MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV
Guess it's a little bug on the default player then..
The phone can play native and HD resolution H264 video files which I have encoded with no problems but a smaller AVI file is stuttering when using MXPlayer. I have tried with SW Decoding and withough in MXPlayer. Has anyone else had this issue when not using a H264 encoded file? I'm guessing the CPU or GPU has acceleration for this video type but i'm surprised it can't play a
Cheers
EDIT i'm a fool, although I set S/W in the options I hadn't selected it from the HUD when actually playing the file.
Plays fine now.
How are high bit-rate 720p files playing mate?
I usually encode blurays down from 20+ GB to 2.5GB 720p in handbrake so not sure what the average bitrate is. I do double pass with non turbo first pass to get the best results.
Could probably go a slightly lower resolution and smaller file size.
Its working fine now anyways.
Only tried one avi....and a stutter quickly followed by a stop. Positive file is good. Codecs issue?

Hi,
Since upgrading my Nexus 7 to 4.4.3 and upgrading to paid v1.7.27 of MX Player I am seeing some weird behaviour playing .AVI files.
During say a 45min video, I will get 5-6 instances where the screen blanks for a second or so, then the video resumes from where it had left off without any intervention from me.
The video files are encoded the same format as others I watched before the upgrade and I never encountered this problem. I can watch the same video files with say BS Player free and there is no problem.
The files are .avi, 720x416 MPEG-4 Part 2, with 2 audio streams (MP3 48000Hz, stereo, 109.3 kbits/sec). They are 45mins long and approx 400mb in size.
I also tried a MKV file H264/AVC/ MPEG4 AVC / MPEG4 Part 10 with a 711x400 resolution with a 24fps and that stuttered in playback and I had to switch to BS Player in order to watch it. I have watched other files of this nature just fine before the upgrade.
I have tried switching H/W+ decoding on and off - does not appear to make a difference.
Hi,
Not so many things are changed on 1.7.27 in video playback module.
Does it also happen on all three decoders -- hw, hw+, sw?
And does it happen with other videos or only with one video in your description?
Thanks
a) try it on HW and SW decoders as well.
b) could you post the mediainfo of the files that cause problems?
