[Q] Can't unlock bootloader - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I recently bought a N5 from another guy. The previous owner told me that it bootlops, and it does. So I tried to format and install stock Lollipop from fastboot: the phone is locked, so when I type "fastboot oem unlock" the phone shows the red line "LOCK STATE - unlocked", then, when I type "fastboot reboot-bootloader" the phone reboots again into bootloader and shows me "LOCK STATE - locked" so I'm not able to perform any wipe or flash. You can also see it from the attached pics. What can cause this?

Instead of using the command line, try rebooting into the boot loader manually with the power and bottom volume key.

TBH, no device should be able to lock and unlock itself upon reboot. I'm pretty sure it's borked

Tried now but nothing. Still "LOCK STATE - locked" after reboot.

Could you flash a factory image right after you unlock it?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app

If it immediately re-locks, 99 times out of 100 means NAND is fried.

If I try to flash the new bootloader "fastboot flash bootloader..." after performing "fastboot oem unlock" and trying NOT to reboot, it sends the bootloader and when trying to write it shows up "FAILED (remote: flash write failure) as you can see from the screen.

If the NAND is fried it's a nearly hopeless case. You would have to replace a lot of your phone's components.

My nexus 5 bootloops and stuck in startup animation
Hi could you solve that problem. I am in the same situation. My nexus 5 bootloops and stuck in startup animation. Please let me know, if you found a way to solve the problem.

In my case the sdcard was fried. I had to sell the phone to another guy.

Hi , how can i confirm the NAND is fried ? I am in the same position as above.

I have the same situation, and would also like to know if there is a way to tell/test failed NAND. Is anyone can enlighten us? I'll really appreciate any help!

i have a nexus 5x that had a motherboard replaced under warranty but now it seems the nand is dead too cos i cant open the bootloader, it sets itself back to locked, could i complain and get it fixed under warranty?

I would complain because an unlocked bootloader is needed to flash a stock rom.

[Q] Need help with possible hard brick

For starters, if there is already an answer to this question, please point me in the right direction because I have looked all over the forums and cannot find an answer. I was wondering if anyone could help me return my Nexus S 4G back to stock. I was in the middle of using one click stock when my power went out and now my phone just sits at the bootloader saying "fastboot mode-no boot or recovery img" and one click stock does not work.; meaning, it will sit and ask me to put the phone into debugging mode. I have also tried manually flashing the files from fastboot but it sits at sending file but does not flash. Even let it sit at the sending screen for 3 hours but it never flashed.
Maybe a brick. The same thing happened to me once, no img's, fastboot not working and a broken power button. I just got it back from a free repair
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
Well, is your bootloader locked/unlocked? and try to do it manually with fastboot, at least you know that things are done correctly.
unlock bootloader is : fastboot oem unlock
lock is: fastboot oem lock
you could try to switch once and try to push the recovery image so you can flash a new rom.
Thanks for the help. I relocked and unlocked the bootloader and it did the trick. I was able to manually flash everything back to the phone
Glad I could be of help

[Q] Nexus 5 unable to go into recovery mode

Hi,
I got a Nexus 5 about 40 days back. The phone randomly switched off a few times. I performed a factory reset as suggested by the Google Support team and other forum posts here. Yesterday, the phone switched off. On going into the bootloader, I am able to view the different options. On selecting recovery mode, it just goes to a blank screen.
The phone is not rooted.
Please help me out.

Thanks for helping me out,
I did the steps as mentioned in the guide, but ran into a problem while unlocking the bootloader.
After entering the command, "fastboot oem unlock" the bootloader gets unlocked.
But on entering the next command, "fastboot reboot" it goes back to unlocked state.
How do I proceed?
thanks again
you said it went from unlocked to unlocked? did you mean goes back to locked?

Pull storage from damaged device

So I accidentally dropped my nexus 5 and I need to replace my display but unfortunately I haven't backed up my data (mostly pictures I'm worrying about the most). So is there a way to pull the storage from it? I've tried with adb and it doesn't work because it doesn't list my device.
I really hope there is a way to do it.
If USB works and its not detecting adb, then its set up wrong. Adb is the only way if both touch and display are broken.
Please click the link in my signature and read the adb and fastboot thread. It will tell you how to set it up properly

I can't seem to make it work.
In "adb devices", it shows a device listed but in "fastboot devices" it doesn't show any device. When I tried to boot into fastboot mode I couldn't tell if I booted correctly because it shows the same thing as when I boot it normally.
I tried using the command "adb pull data/media/0 C:\adb\sdcard_25082014" and it gave me the error "remote object data/media/0 does not exist".
What should I do?

Unfortunately I don't know a solution to your problem, but your data shouldn't get lost when you replace the screen.
I replaced mine a week ago. Actually it was very easy. The most difficult part was removing the backcover.
The parts inside of the device are fixed with a little bit of glue which is not strong at all.
The whole replacement took me around 20 Minutes and I have never done something like that before.
After that everything was still on my phone.
And if your device doesn't get recognized from your computer in fastboot mode you should try the universal adb driver. This works perfectly for my Nexus 5.

Are you SURE you're in recovery?
You got an error when you mounted data
Edit, well you got 2 errors...
The first error you got was the "usage" line. That means it thinks you typed "mount data" as an incomplete command. It IS incomplete if you're booted into android. Its not incomplete if you're in recovery. So I dont think you're in recovery.
The second error is "remote object doesnt exist". That's because you haven't mounted data.
To ensure youre in recovery, either:
1) Boot into android and then "adb reboot recovery"
2) From off, hold vol down and press power to get to bootloader. Press vol up TWICE then press power

no. it isn't
the device reboots and the black screen with"fastboot mode" appears after giving the first command. But after giving the second command it doesn't moves ahead, I mean the confirmation message doesn't appears in which we are supposed to select yes or no by pressing volume up and volume down key. So, evrytime i try to unlock bootloader i use to stuck at that black screen and left with no choice but unplugging the device and taking out the battery. After i unplug my device the command prompt shows up a message, somewhat like this- "error <source<too many links>"
:/ please help...
In recovery there should be an advance option inside that you have reboot to bootloader option.

Bricked Nexus 5 - Cant unlock the bootloader

My nexus 5 just turned off and is stuck on the boot animation. I am able to access the bootloader and have already tried to wipe cache and performed factory data reset but the phone is still stuck on the boot animation. I have tried to unlock the bootloader with 1-click-nexus-5-bootloader-unlock as well as CF-Auto-Root-hammerhead-hammerhead-nexus5 tools but after I accept to unlock thebootloader, the phone reboots and gets stuck on the boot animation. The bootloader status remains locked.
I really need to fix this issue and I would be grateful if anyone could help me out.
Thank you
Okay instead of using those tools can you please go into bootloader and try unlocking it using normal fastboot commands (I think it's "oem unlock" or something to that effect). See what happens after that.

This is a common sign on Nexus Devices that the memory chip is failing or has failed. This means it is a hardware issue, and cannot be repaired without exchanging the device, or replacing the motherboard.
