[Q] All I want for Christmas is S5 with hotspot... - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so my S5 is functioning but not 100% Some background on my rooting/ROMing history first. I had no problems to root and ROM on my old school Epic 4G, had nothing but problems trying on my S3 and now I am about in the same boat with my S5. Biggest reason overall to root/ROM is for hotspot access. My DSL at home is junk and my 4G runs way better.
I am not 100% what android I was on when I first started. (I think this might be where I screwed up) Now I show 4.4.4 with 3.4.102-KT-SGS5-KK4.4-TW-G900-08.10.2014-ktoonsez #1 for the kernel version. Build number KTU84P.G900PVU1ANK4.
I tried to first root the phone following QBking77’s video instructions found here with CF root ttp://download.chainfire.eu/408/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-kltespr-kltespr-smg900p.zip
Then tried towel root, this would never say that my S5 was a recognized device. I bricked the phone quite a few times and somewhere in the mix I followed these instructions ttp://galaxys5root.com/galaxy-s5-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s5/ and I think using a few different versions of Odin got me at least booting all the way again. I tried MOAR first and it would lock on boot every time when showing the first animation. AllianceROM would not work either.
Currently I have Phil’s touch 6 recovery (6.26.2, clockwork mod v6.0.4.7)installed and somehow managed to get [STOCK ROM][4.4.4] NK4 Kitkat ROM DeOdexed installed. It does say that I have root access now when checked with root check basic but every hotspot app that I have downloaded will either crash or power cycle the phone when launched.
What is weird/does not work now:
Boots to: Kernel is not SEANDROID enforcing Set warranty bit : kernel
Camera likes to show weird colors/distort
Alarm does not make any sound now, phone just vibrates
All around glitchy with apps crashing
No predictive text (spell check) while typing
What I want is a good working phone with a hotspot that I don’t have to pay Sprint like another $30 a month or whatever it is. I am a fan of less bloatware as well, but oh well. So suggestions on what to do and where to start???
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

You should flash this Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53584346
As you can pretty much customize it as much or as little as you want. It comes with the modded hot spot.

I know the OP was lengthy, but for the life of me I could not get MOAR to boot after flash. Using Phil's and I tried TWRP as well. It would lock on the first animation screen every time. Wiped cache and Delvik cache everytime. no dice... How can I get MOAR to run? That is the one that I originally tried to start with.

Had not seen or heard of anyone running Cynagen on an S5, guess I really didn't look since I was shooting for MOAR. Would this stop the boot error of the SEANDROID not enforcing crap? Just flash in Phil's like normal???
I think you guys might be missing my bigger point that nothing I flashed would boot after the flash except for the stock ROM that I am on now. My biggest issue is that flashing ROMs was not working.
Thanks for the replies gentleman.

I feel like I need to do something through Odin to go back to stock 100% and start all over. Is there a way to do that? That is what I ended up doing with my S3 and then after back to stock I just gave up. With no landline at the house it is a pretty big deal to have a working cell.
Keep em coming guys! Only 5 days till Christmas!!!

In TWRP go to advance check off everything to wipe except internal and external memory. Make sure your md5 matches on your downloads. And then reflash the Rom you want.
You are either getting corrupted downloads or are not wiping your device correctly.
There may be one other thing try this also as a final attempt: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=55367233

MOAR has a dedicated Help section located HERE.
If you would post on the MOAR help thread with a screenshot of your Settings > About Device, I'll help you get MOAR going for you.

You cant run a 4.4.2 rom on top of the NK4 bootloader, you have to also flash the NK4 kernel.
You have a couple of choices:
- follow Ramer's lead and check out the FAQ.
- if you want to stay on the NK4 bootloader, flash the NK4 kernel from HERE before rebooting the rom after flashing (uncheck reboot)
- flash the mini-bootloader to bring the phone back to NE5 bootloader first HERE
Its probably easier just to obtain and flash the NK4 kernel after the rom but its up to you. Don't forget to do a full wipe before flashing any rom.

Most custom roms already offer tethering built in. Also they may already have a modified framework-res.apk(which these files replace) and may cause issues. So to answer your question I recommend only using this hack on stock.
I have an att i337 stock mf3, rooted using towel and su access. unlocked sim using tmo sim, which file should i download? also im on 4.2.2.. or if i update to atleast 4.3 with the newer modem will that fix this problem?

I'm surprised that you are one of the few that still has att i337 mf3 phone. if so, stay on it, root it and disable the update. else, you'll lost pretty much everything unless something else happen. however, the only thing i can recommend is that you follow another guide that can do it or use foxfi and the paid key.
Holy crap dude! Super cool! If only I didn't have a faulty motherboard everything would be almost perfect, only thing I I'm missing is wifi calling but whatever. I'm gonna have to live without it cause the tmobile roms just don't work for me. Thanks so much man! Hey you think tmobile detects this? I have 3gb free a month.

Correct. Installing safestrap will not wipe anything.
Awesome, installed without issues.
The connection does appear to be quite a bit slower than using the previous theringprovision.apk with 4.2.2.
Would flashing a different modem help this?

I don't believe a new modem will help. And I only briefly tested so other users should chime in as to whether they are also experiencing a slow connection.

Can you try this version and see if the speed is better? I believe that I made a mistake on the first one: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23622183712475370

Is it just as simple as flashing over the previous one, or do I have any maintenance to do first?

Nope just flash over previous version.
Flashing it now, I'll get you an update in the morning.
Edit: Seems quite a bit faster after flashing the new file.
I wish I had done a speed test first but the results below are from my second install
36.64Mb down 12.95 up.
Once I rebooted I got the message "Safestrap disabled"
is that ok? I noticed the security policy in the 4.4.2 update with Samsung seems to like the ban hammer with alot of rooted stuff.

I don't know what kind of LTE speeds you normally get in your location but those speeds that you posted are more than decent. And I wouldn't worry about the safestrap disabled message, that's normal. I definitely made a mistake when compiling the first version of the tether add on but this latest version is definitely correct enjoy.

[Bootloader][d800][JB/KK/LP][2015.07.29] Flash JB/KK/LP Bootloader

Easily Switch Between JB/KK/LP Bootloader
!! d800 ONLY !!
Make sure you flash the right model!
With the advent of BUMP, we can now use the KK bootloader. A lot of projects preserved the old JB bootloader, since that was needed due to loki. This is the easy way to update your JB bootloader to the new KK bootloader.
Inspired by @dorimanx who did this for the d802. I followed suit and made this for the d800.
What this is:
As it simply says, it upgrades (or downgrades) the bootloader. This includes several other small partitions, in addition to aboot and sbl1.
Sources:
10d & 20c - Extracted from TOT file
20y & 30f - I started with 20d, then did FOTA to 20y and extracted the partitions. Then I did FOTA to 30f and again extracted the partitions.
What this is NOT:
This does not touch your boot, recovery, or modem/radio partitions. You must make sure those are compatible BEFORE flashing this.
WARNING: You can easily brick your phone if you mess this up! This is for d800 ONLY!!! Also, you must have BUMPed boot and recovery images already on your phone to use KK bootloader or you will get fastboot error (or it just won't boot). JB supports BUMP images and LOKI images. KK only supports BUMP.
Lollipop Information:
Special LOLLIPOP WARNING: At this time, the Lollipop BL is not exploitable. Therefore, if you flash Stock LP BL, you will probably brick, or at a minimum, you will lose access to recovery.
To use a BUMPED lollipop ROM, you should install the Lollipop Bump bootstack on my site. It is all of the 30f Lollipop partitions, with a 20y aboot (so bump will work).
Download:
Did you read the warning above? If not, DO NOT DOWNLOAD.
Did you read it twice? If not, DO NOT DOWNLOAD.
Do you understand everything it says? If not, DO NOT DOWNLOAD.
Do you know how to recover if you mess your phone up? If not, DO NOT DOWNLOAD.
I do not want any posts saying "HALP I MESSED THIS UP."
Which bootloader am I currently on?
The only sure way to know is to flash one, or know which one you flashed last.
You can get an idea of your bl when you use the button combo to enter recovery (VolDwn+Pwr, release and repress when LG logo comes up, hold until menu comes up) the screen looks different. On JB the phone asks you to repeatedly press power for factory reset. On KK the phone has you use the volume rocker to pick different menu options.

Update 2015.07.29
-Version 1.1 does NOT flash misc partition.
+Misc contains things like MAC addresses and doesn't need to be flashed.
Update 2015.05.12
I have added the 20y KK bootloader, which appears to be different than the originally posted 20c. Both are now posted.
Additionally, I added the LP 30f bootloader. WARNING: This bootloader is not (yet?) exploitable! Flashing it will likely brick your device, or at the very least it will break your recovery. You have been warned!

As stated in the OP, dorimanx made exactly the same zip for the d802 to update the bootloader and the other necessary partitions.
You'll just need a bumped recovery + bumped kernel.
Just in case you would like to upgrade to KK bootloader
I'm just waiting for render to release bumped R26 and the first thing I'll do is update the bootloader
Could someone please be kind enough to make one for vs980? I tried making one myself by picking the same exact files off of vs980 kdz but it didn't work.

I used this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2600575
Extract the partitions out of the stock tot, then just use a simple flash script. Again, if you don't know what you're doing - it is VERY easy to mess up and DIFFICULT to recover from.
Noticing this says bumped boot and recovery required in the op. Was wondering even if I'm on stock everything, boot included, do I still need to be bumped. I would say yes on the recovery due to the nature of how autorec worked. But what about boot, since it is bone stock? Thanks for the info. Thanks for your work on this phone.
Yikes I tried this with 12/5 AICP 5.0 drgravy d800, Render5, and blastagators bumped TWRP 2.8.2.0.
Installed the KK-20C bootloader, the device spent a long time on on the LG logo with a few vibrates, then it blackscreened. While blackscreened plugging into PC started charging and gave me access to Internal Storage. Tried a power off and back on again with same result.
Luckily, manually going into TWRP and flashing the JB-10D bootloader got things back to normal.
EDIT: Just dawned on me that I had the dr87 Working Rotation JB Baseband installed. Perhaps I should have tried with the KK Baseband?

After reading ALOT of info heres where i am. I think our good guy render is trying to get his kernel working bumped for KK bootloader and lollipop builds.. heres where i got sad.
It seems recently there is ALOT of dev arguements on the nature of opensource bump so much so that the the orginators have actually closed down and stopped development on the project. lets not go any further with that disucssion, there are other threads for that if you care to read.
So basically i dont have a build environment right now to try to bump any kernels using the instructions and I'm not sure what to think right now considering what i HAVE read. I actually stay away from posting alot of things on XDA that i do on my own, because of this very nature i have seen pop up to many times to count. So to summerize:
Dont have a build environment where i am right now to try...even when i get home im not sure how i will feel since i do respect the codefire guys but understand why someone would have done what they did. If i am successful getting someone elses work say renders kernel, to finally boot ill let him know but im sure render will figure it before i even do that :highfive:

[Q] Hard Bricked S3 Verizon 4.4.2

ON: Galaxy S3 4.4.2 Verizon(d2vzw) -->OK, I know you all may think I didn't read the other debrick threads, your wrong. I made this new thread because i HAVE tried endlessy every method of debrick on this forum and the internet, and no success. I was messing around with safestrap and decided to try and flash a rom called flashingdroid: for some reason. So i did as usual, boot into recovery(safestrap 3.75) and wipe current os and flash the new one. So i wiped my stock rom(after making a backup) and installed/flashed the new one(flashingdroid) and after seemingly a successful flash, i pressed reboot. Then it went downhill. One second after i pressed reboot, the screen flashed quickly, then shutoff, for good. I couldn't boot it or get into recovery or odin or ANYTHING. I tried the microsd method of debricking with minimal success. It will only give me one vibration, then black scree with that method. Nothing else has worked. I know this was a noob mistake somehow, but does anyone know any special tricks or something? Will a good jig maybe work? I have doubt verizon or samsung will accept it back(it was well rooted!). Please anything/anybody help! I really don't want to buy a new phone or jtag it. Thanks!:crying:
You may have read the debrick threads, but what you should have done from the beginning was read and pay attention to which forum you were in. You flashed a ROM for the International version of the S3 onto your Verizon S3. You almost certainly turned your phone into a shiny paper weight. JTAG may be your only hope. If you don't have one, check out mobiletechvideos.com. I'm not familiar enough with safestrap to know if that may have actually saved you since it is not a traditional recovery and I don't know if it touches all the partitions. In the future, research, research, and research, and pay very close attention to exactly what you are flashing onto your phone. For the Verizon S3, you should only flash ROMs from this sub-forum. And when using safestrap, you are restricted to only flashing ROMs with the same build number as what your phone is currently on in a stock condition.
Ok...Thanks

Confused About What's Possible for Modding a Stock Verizon S3
Can someone please steer me in the right direction? I have a Verizon Galaxy S3 running 4.4.2 stock. I recently rooted my phone, but I realize I am very limited as to any mods I can make due to the locked bootloader. Am I able to modify my OS in some way at all (Safestrap) to make my phone run better, or am I just too late in going about this? I've read so much on this subject, but the more I read, it seems the more confused I get. I want to be careful not to brick my phone and would love to see some precise directions on what I could do. Thanks a million for any help at all!

Hey, thanks a lot for that! As much as I've read, I've never heard of xposed. I'll research it and see what it takes and what it will do for my phone. If it helps at all, which I'm sure it will, that would be great. Thanks again for your reply!

It's hard to compare this forum with the others. I believe the people here are the most knowledgeable and, like you, very helpful. Funny enough, or not, I posed a related question on another site (initials AC), and it took over 150 views and a week later before anybody offered a reply. Anyway, I can see there is lots of information on this forum about xposed, so now I'll go and learn as much as I can about it. Thanks again for your help!
Btw, here's a link for others like me who are clueless about xposed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2299428

I've been around the web going on nearly 20 years and I'd have to agree some are more helpful than others. I find xda to be a great resource for anything android or windows phone related. And yes I agree some are a lot more helpful than others. The guys and gals still lurking around the VZW S3 forums have been here since the beginning for this phone and even though mine is no longer active I still use it daily, mostly for games but will probably never give it up. It was my first true (I'm comparing it to the HTC thunderbolt) android phone

I seem to have gotten into big trouble - I hope there's a solution. I learned all about Xposed and installed it along with about a dozen modules. Everything was working great, except the torch/flashlight... [I wanted that! ] so, I saw a download for a module on this forum to fix the flashlight... http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xposed-flashlight-fixer-fix-devices-t2867267 . Well, since doing that, I think I realized that I should have left the flashlight alone! When I tried to reboot after adding the module to xposed, I ended up in what i believe is a boot loop. The Samsung screen comes on, and then it gets stuck on the red Verizon screen. I never dreamed that a module installation could cause this; and I guess I figured if it ever happened I could get into recovery mode and restore everthing. Btw, I had done a complete backup of my phone using Titanium on my sd card.
So, here's what I can/can't do now. I can push "down-volume-button" + home + power to get to screen where you can download a cusom OS - then pushing volume-up-button goes to screen that says "Downloading...Do not turn off target!! (Nothing seems to happen from here.) - - - I cannot enter recovery mode by pressing "volume-up" + home + power keys. When I do that I get the big yellow triangle with message - System software not authorized...go to nearest Verizon store. hmmmm.... So, am I hard bricked or soft bricked? Do I have a way out? Thanks very much for any help with this!

No problem. Your soft bricked and it seems your on the latest firmware, correct me if I'm wrong
4.4.2 NE1? If so you can use Odin to flash back to stock 4.4.2 and you should be ok

Instead of odin, you could try using samasung kies 3 and use its emergencey firmware recovery tool which dl's and intalls the correct, latest firmware on your device.
What you do:
Install kies 3 on your computer.
Boot to odin mode on your phone.
Click on tools in kies.
Select emergency firmware recovery option.
Follow on screen directions.
Hope I helped!

Shapes Blue & Root Wizard,
Thanks much for your replies. Is it possible for me, having had 4.4.3 on phone, to go to 4.3 instead of 4.4.2? Seems some people think that's an advantage, but I'm not sure. If I did do that, could I still run xposed?
Btw, RW, I tried using your idea, but when I was attempting to do the emergency Firmware Recovery, it asked for a computer code...??? So, that method doesn't seem to be a good route for me, but thanks for the tip!
You guys don't know how happy I am to have you come to the rescue! I've been using an old iPhone 4 for calls, etc.... during the day which I don't like at all! I'll be real glad to get back to AndroidLand. Thanks again!!!

I'm 100% sure the last update on the VZW S3 was 4.4.2 NE1. As long as you can root the phone you should be able to run xposed without an issue
And no you cannot downgrade to anything other than what your currently on

Believe-it-or-not, I still haven't been able to get my s3 back up & running. When I open Odin3 v 3.09 and try to flash the firmware 1534VRUDNE1 . . . . .tar.md5 , it doesn't successfully load to the s3. I've attached a screenshot showing the Odin screen. It show "All threads completed. (succeed 0 failed 1) - btw, when I click on the firmware file within Odin, nothing appears in the box to the right of the AP field; is that correct?
Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

[Stock][d800][AT&T] Lollipop D80030F - Partitions

Dump of Stock Partitions
Lollipop d800-30f
Since we don't have a d80030f KDZ or TOT yet, I decided I would try to do the next best thing. I did a back to factory 20c -> 20y -> 30f upgrade progression. Then I did a factory reset, followed by one click root. Then I dumped all of the partitions that are normally part of the KDZ.
The zip includes Stock 30f images of:
aboot
dbi
laf
misc (removed, not needed - specific to each phone)
persist
rpm
sbl1
tz
I have the modem partition, which will get its own zip and its own post. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-g2/development/modems-att-stock-modems-t3106221)
I also dumped system, but it is huge. Please don't download it if you're not a ROM maker (it'll make Google mad at me): https://drive.google.com/folderview...NEb0dUVlpQenhrOHZsaGYyQ3ZiOGV0LWM&usp=sharing

Here ya go.
Flashable zip of the whole ROM will be soon (probably work on it tonight).
@blastgator, what will be the difference between your flashable zip and the stock OTA, other than the fact that it's a zip? Also, do you find it preferable to use stock LP on our device vs BlissPop or other 5.1.1 ROMs? I spend a lot of time and computing power building nightlies, want to know if it's pointless. I don't think so, but now that we have LP, I needed to ask you. PMing you!

I still run KK. I am just doing some of this stuff to get ready for the upcoming move. I was going to start looking into ROM creation, based on stock ROM (since we don't really have any at this point).
Therefore, I don't really know the answer to your question - "is it worth it?"
And yes, the zip is just what I recovered after doing the FOTA. Much easier grabbing these instead of having to flash 20c and then force 2x FOTAs.

I slapped a zip together earlier for the stock ROM - it wasn't cooperative and made me mad so I gave up for the evening. Kept getting error:
E: Failed to sysMapFile
It was >2GB so that might have been part of the problem.

Exactly what I'm looking/waiting for as well. 100% stock Lollipop rom in a flashable zip format. Well, a debloated version would be better but I'll debloat myself if need be. Our Devs are amazing, I'll hang tight and wait for it
Awesome, thank you so much! There hasn't been much movement for a stock LP ROM for the D800, so I'm glad you're doing it!

I would not post something I would not try on my phone.
HOWEVER, I have NOT tried this on my phone because I had some family issues come up and I can't be "off the grid" so to speak to test things in recovery.
This flashes 20y bootstack, 30f modem, 30f system, and 30f bumped boot.img. Nothing else /should/ be modified. Root may or may not work. It appears installed, but you may need to run "One-Click-Root" or some similar thing after install.
Also, I modified nothing other than root and doing a bump. FOTA will still be functional as well as any other nasties that could cause issues down the line. This is STOCK!
If anyone tries, please report back, for everyone's sake.

Didn't work. I had a bad update-binary in there. Once I fixed that I kept playing mix and match because of fastboot error. Still no luck, and needed my phone back. I'll tinker more later.
Tried full 20y bootstack. Tried just aboot and laf 20y, rest as LP. Tried each of this with bumped and unbumped stock LP boot.img.
Bumping gave me a padding error, guessing it might be partially related to that. Unsure.
Thanks for the update, saved me a few headaches I'll hang in there until you get a version that boots. Thanks for doing this!

Hi guys. I followed each step correctly and when the phone rebooted it got stuck on the Galaxy S7 splashscreen. I chose my variant (Sprint) while I was setting up the phone in Aroma. Is there something i did wrong? Perhaps next time I am going to choose the Verizon variant since it does state in this forum that it is 100% working correctly.

Started on stock PF2 with root. I mean all I did was flash it via FlashFire. It went to Aroma immediately. I set up everything (choosing my variant which is Sprint), and when the phone rebooted it got stuck on the Galaxy S7 splashscreen and never advanced from there. I am not sure what I did wrong, it was weird. Any one else have this similar issue or is it just me? Next time I will try choosing the Verizon variant in Aroma.

In Aroma it gives a list of all the variants.. sooo do you think if I chose Verizon even though I have a Sprint phone that it'll work? I am a little unsure. I checked the rom under every variant in xda and it looks like AT&T and Verizon are good. I mean I would think the developers would test this rom before posting it, right?

The rom should work, i mean developers know not to put out something broken. I tried a rom in the verizon section for my sprint s7 and it never got past Samsung screen. So im not sure if u flashing the Verizon variant would make it work

Or maybe we should wait until the developer makes sure all other carriers are working before trying to flash the rom again.. I feel like you will get the same problem I ran into.

No no man. You can try and see what happens, there's nothing wrong with that. I mean you may run into the problem I had or it could be a completely different outcome.
