[Q] Defective display? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't really know what is happening but my year old nexus 5 seems to be developing a display problem.
It got a yellowish tint at the bottom of the screen but the top 3/4 is totally fine. What is causing it and is it just me who have this problem? Also, if you have any, please post some solutions to the problem without RMA or replacing anything.
It might be something about light leak but I am not seeing any when the screen is displaying a black picture.

I have a similar thing but it tends to only be on the bottom 1/8 of the screen.
I tend to find this is because this is the least used area of the screen - being where the soft keys go. Try running it full screen, full brightness on a white page (probably using something like this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gombosdev.displaytester&hl=en_GB). When you do this, does the yellowish tint fade over time?

By Over Time do you mean 30 minutes or a day? I tried this method before for about half an hour and it does not seems to be working. Will try it again now. But will it really help?
My OCD is killing me. I told myself not to look at the tint and I end up just staring at it.

LCD Screen Defect or Software/Driver Problem?

Hey guys,
I am going crazy here, searching forums did not help me at all.
The lower section of the screen keeps flicking, and not always, what do i mean by flicking, its like the screen at the lower section keeps doing like a strange low refresh rate, and has an old imprint of some old menus. Happens especially when there is the color of gray.
Made a screenshot of the phone, no problems, there, so its not a software rendering problem, might be a drivers problem though, or a defec tin the screen itself.
Frequency is high but not always, and am unable to determine when does that happen exactly. going crazy here, is this a defect? or all touch pro's have this?
Exact explanation summary:
1CM from the bottom of the LCD sometimes flickers as if that 1CM is having an extremely low refresh rate. Mostly happens when there is light gray, but not necessarily, and a soft reset for the phone does not remove it. It happens on random!
Hey,
Yeah it happens to me too! You don't need to do a soft reset, it actually fades away if you watch it closely! I don't know what it is either, and yes it is random as you have stated! I initially thought it was an application I installed as it only started happening after that, so I did a full hard reset and its still happening! Not sure what or how, but hoping next firmware version stops it!
Cheers,
mpls-te
As it happens, that's exactly why I've logged on here today! Any ideas whta the cause might be?
OK, good to see that others have this, so am not alone here, experts here, any ideas? other touch pro users, can you please leave your statements?
I hope its a driver issue.
But from what i noticed, its like, the screen is OFF, as in blank and no back light, but somehow, the application working on the screen before you turned off the device is somehow printing something on the LCD, something that we don't see, and when we actually start the phone and its back light, that OFF LINE imprint pops on screen. Something like that.
Its completely illogical, but dunno, can't find any sense here and am going crazy
Same thing happened to me and a few others as well.
See my thread here.
What rom is everyone using?
I've noticed a similar issue with mine, except rather than something software it seems like it's the backlight for the bottom 1cm of the screen flickering slightly. I don't see any weird pixels or inappropriate screen information, just a dimming/high speed flickering of the backlight in that same regionas yours. It comes and goes. Sometimes weeks without it, then maybe 3 times in a day for a minute or two at a time. Everything else works fine and whatever screen I go to displays fine.
I'm assuming it's a hardware problem with the LED(s) that light up the bottom portion of the screen, and I'm going to use it as an excuse to get a warranty replacement somewhere near the end of the warranty when the phone's getting a little old and worn.

Lool, evil, lets just hope that this problem DOES occur when you go to their shop for your replacement
Good idea though, might do the same thing except that i have to travel abroad to where i got the phone from to actually get the warranty working. Don't forget to re-enable stock SPL and stock ROM
It happens frequently enough I'll be able to get it on video just in case they need proof, but typically they just exchange by mail.
I just posted in another thread about this issue. I have run into the same thing a few times. The bottom portion of the screen flickers, and when i do things that have a dark gray or black screen I can see a ghost image of the left and right soft keys from my TFL3D home screen. It seems to be most noticeable when the screen brightness is set to max. To get it to go away I usually do a few soft resets, and then, if needed, i will turn off the phone and take the battery out for a while. I have never tried waiting it out to see if it will just go away on its own.

I see that everyone posting in this thread, that has their signature filled in, is using the Energy ROM. I find that very interesting.
i am having the same problems, sometimes touchflo3d will flicker at the bottom, near the edges. I also get text that can be read through other screens. Like on pocketshield i can see the left and right softkey words still at the bottom. its so odd !
P.S im on energyrom
I'm on NATF v2.2, not an energy rom. But then again, mine looks more like a hardware issue, as I've never seen any ghost images of text or softkeys, just flickering.
can somebody post screens?
maybe the same problem here...
hardreset, other roms > problem still there:-(
Same problem here and I am using stock rom!
here are 3 screens of my xda diamond pro, using latest official o2 rom and newest romeOS eng
hope you can see this prob?! same like yours?

Well, i doubt EnergyROM has anything to do with that problem, since my Stock ROMz had same problem, never got fixed with any updates HTC used to release. MAYBE some Cooked ROMs out there have this solved, if any, please let us know And my problem is nothing close to screenshots above :S

Dude, those photos are awful, after seeing them am happy with my phone flickering, its nothing close to this.
You see, in your photos, all three of em, you some kind of shadow effect, where text of a button for example has that same text beneath it 3x6mm, that is not my case at all.
My case is as follows, IF i am on the home screen for example all looks ok, except that the bottom 1CM of the screen is flickering. If i go to another window, either a total black one or any other screen, i would still see a ghost of the old home screen, for example, and only at the bottom 1CM.
Will post photos once i get my cam back. Cheers
similar issue
my issue is kinda similar, instead of getting the bottom 1cm or so discoloration or stuck pixels, I get streaks of red or blue on my screen. I have had this happen on each version of NATF I have tried, but don't remember it happening on the stock version (which I am tempted to try again to see if that's the issue).
Could this be a driver issue?
mind is even worse than all you guys, the touch screnn dose not response, and i have the energy rom on it, before it goes wrong. it just suddenly dose not response, than i send it to HTC, they ask for 425.00 for fix.... I will just send this to Asia and get some one to fix it.
But I hope before i send it out, some one can help me here.... anyway can fix it easy!!!!
Hi all, i have the same problem, here's another topic about it

Light Bleed

I know it's probably been addressed before but I was hoping for some kind of explanation to the lightbleed? on my TF700T. I question it because I ONLY notice it at the initial boot screen - when the "2nd" bootscreen comes (when the display dims), no bleed - Also, no bleed when on a black screen, watching movies, etc - nothing. Is the initial boot screen just set at an amazingly high backlight that absolutely any tablet (at least any TF700s) would experience this? Perhaps there is an alternate bootscreen I could install and test? I am rooted...
thanks for the advice
PS - I HIGHLY doubt anyone would return theirs for this
Do you mean the two spots on the right side, or do you mean bleeding out from other places? I have light bleed sometimes on the right side but it goes away after a minute or so. Like it has to "warm up" or something.
no, not really - at the initial boot screen, I notice it on all sides but mostly lower left around the "home" icons-when it appears - after the initial boot, it's pretty much gone - I am thinking that the boot up for some reason is set to such a ridiculously high brightness that 0 bleed (if it is even that) is impossible. Can you post a pic of yours during initial boot or a video?
I get lightbleed occasionally but it fades out after a few minuetes.

I think its normal.. my original prime had the light bleeds near home buttons too. I happened to have one of those from best buys first batch the sent in plastic no bubble wrap mailers so it had a dent on the box on the same side the light bleed was the strongest. But so far of the two inifinitys ive opened up at Best Buy, light bleed was in the exact same places.
The teardown from the Prime showed that it is caused by the screws holding the screen in being too tight. If you take it apart you can fix the light bleed spots by adjusting these screws.

I have the same lightbleed on a bottom of my screen (at 3-4 spots) going to the right side as well (1-2 spot). They all gone on the 2nd boot screen. Do you think that this will decrease the life of the screen?
Also I have notice something else and I really not sure what is causing this. I have setup brightness to about 30%, then If I start watching anything (Netfilx, YouTube or movie) my screen is start adjusting (change brightness up and down) like Auto Brightness options is checked, especially when it has a white (or very bright) background color. It is very annoying and very distracting for you eyes. Never happen on my Prime.
Does anyone have experienced the same problem? Any idea how to fix this are very much appreciated.
Thanks

Regarding your second issue that is a known "feature" called Dynamic Contrast.
Quoting the All in one Infinity Guide stickied in the General Forum:
[ Q ] My screen constantly adjusts brightness even if auto-brightness is disabled
Yes,that is a "feature" called Dynamic Contrast but not all of us like it.Follow the directions from this post to disable but keep in mind that your device must be rooted.

Thanks for clarification. I thought that something is wrong with the tablet. It is look like that I have to take the root solution.

I have what sounds like the exact same lightbleed locations. If I watch something late at night with all the lights off it is very apparent.
I don't think it decreases the life of the screen, my TF Prime had much less lightbleed, but it never expanded or anything.

[Q] Screen Issue? (XT926)

I received my XT926 as a refurb and I have been experiencing a strange screen issue.
I will often have my phone on a dock, charging and sometimes I will notice the screen is black like it's off, but the touchscreen is responsive. Hitting the power button does nothing but it makes the sound as if I had locked the phone. Hitting the power button a second time will turn the screen on like normal operation.
Very rarely I have noticed the screen will turn off while I'm actually using the phone and it's a weird effect. The easiest way to describe it is that it looks like entire lines disappearing randomly over a period of 1-2 seconds, going from all visible, then to all black, kind of like slatted blinds being closed, but at random. After this, it displays the same symptoms as if I had found the screen off while in a dock/charging.
Now, I don't want to say it's related, but I first started experiencing this on the Stock KitKat update from Verizon. I am currently using Cyanogenmod 12 nightlies and I am experiencing the same issue. It seems to be happening with greater frequency.
I have also experienced the blue screen effect when certain animations/elements/apps are up on my screen, but I think they are unrelated.
Also, there is a faint discoloration bar about 2/5ths of an inch thick uniformly vertically from top to bottom of my phone on the righthand side (just under where the notification bar would be if turned horizontal).
I've tried to find more information about this but my search results have been relatively lackluster (90% of the results are trying to sell me the phone or specification pages)
So I'm breaking down and turning to here. Does anyone know what's going on here? My current theory is that my screen is going bad. I have no intention of replacing the screen on this phone (would rather just buy a new one), so any suggestions that don't involve physical hardware repairs would be appreciated.
I thought i was the only one experiencing it.
The screen turning off with a weird effect happens rarely but yeah it happens. And the blue screen effect, i noticed it only happens when im on the youtube app when the video stops working because of my connectivity issues.
Im not rooted nor is my bootloader unlocked. On the latest system version. Sounds like a software problem but hey im no expert.

i also have this with my referb i made moto give me my money back and they let me keep the phone for me it was very rare but my new phone also had a really bad screen all yellowish and bad white balance in low light if you are unhappy with it call them and say you are unhappy with the replacement here is the white glove number 800-653-7185 they are more understanding and nice but you may lose you ability to unlock your bootloader on the new phone if it comes with the latest software just a warning
I have that screen off with lines slowly disappearing thing, too And, yeah, it's also a refurbished one, bought from one of the sellers on aliexpress... I thought Lollipop was the culprit or something like that. Oh, well... It rarely happens. And luckily I only have that, not the second issue you mentioned
I am having this exact same issue. The weird lines-to-black screen thing, and the flickering blue screen when watching video. Are you saying the solution is to call Motorola and ask for a new phone?
The blue flickering can be prevented by going into Developer Options and checking "Disable HW Overlays".
The discolored stripe on the screen sounds like burn-in; these AMOLED screens are much more susceptible to burn-in than the LCD screens used in older phones. Whomever owned the phone before it was returned to Motorola probably had something running on their screen continuously with a bright-colored bar at the top, likely in a car or desk dock. The screen is very easy to replace yourself with an eBay part, if you're inclined; it involves 2 screws and 2 connectors.
I've seen the lines-to-black thing exactly twice since I got this phone refurb two months ago. Sorry, I don't know what causes it or how to avoid it, but the workaround is quick and simple enough that I'm not worried about it, yet.

Pink Stripe (screen burn?)up the left side after using TWRP recovery.

I have an interesting situation with my screen.
It seems that after running TWRP to restore my partition,I have a persistent pink stripe running up the left side of my screen.
I've also noticed that when TWRP runs, there"s two very bright neon blue bars up either side of the screen.
My screen brightness settings in TWRP were 40%,but sliding the control full bright or dim made no difference.
I am running TWRP 2.8.6,IIRC.
I don't know if the stripe will ever totally fade out,but it does seem to be about half as bright since it first appeared a day or so ago.
There was a stripe on the right, curved side, but that seems to be gone now.
I am running marshmallow,if that makes any difference.
Any ideas?
Anyone run into this before?
Nobody has seen this?
Just to clarify,I did post this to save others the possible problem I'm seeing.
I had this very issue. My screen would have horizontal rainbow lines. Eventually the screen turned green.
I solved the problem by first removing the battery and then the back exposing the motherboard. I disconnected all of the ribbon connectors. Then I used compressed air at a low volume to blow all over the exposed motherboard. I then reconnected the ribbon connectors making sure that they were firmly in place. After reassembling the phone and replacing the battery, everything works just fine. It's been two weeks now and no more problems.

Sounds like you had a random issue due to a dirty connection.
My issue is very defined exactly where the two blue-white bars run up either side while using TWRP.
They are pretty darned bright too.
They reminded me of the neon trim they used to put on juke boxes.
I have seen screen images of TWRP and the side bars weren't there.
I just wonder if I had a screen setting wrong or have other people seen these bars as well.
I will remember your idea though.
I use Micky387 v3.0.2 and the UIAbstract theme. It still looks odd with the theme, but better than no theme. I do not recall anything permanent because of it. I remember the stock twrp was extremely bright. I use that on my S3 too. I have 300sec and 23% brightness... I suspect the version you have is just too old? I had stripes using a cwm build, but nothing permanent either.
OTOH I have been using burn-in fix for a week now and it doesn't seem to help me. Some people swear by those apps. I got mine second hand and wasn't shown the "burnt-in keyboard"! It was only 100$ however...

My stripes have faded to a dull pink.
I've tried those pixel fixers, but they don't seem to work.
It's probably due to the way OLEDs produce light.
If I get fed up in future,I'll just do a new screen.
The stripe burns only showed up after my last round of recovery work.
The version of TWRP is the one listed for my phone at their website,IIRC.

Got this problem with my screen,it became yellow one a small side of the screen, can I do something to fix it myself or I need to fix it with my warranty?

Charged the phone while I was doing some work ,I unplugged it at 90%,at the moment I didn't realized that the screen is yellow. After a few days I saw that the screen was a bit odd,if the screen shows a black photo, were the yellow spots are white.
Did it fall on the floor, took bad bumps, stayed on a heat font for a long period..? It's too much bizzarre to face this as a result of a software issue/error. You could try to send it to service center saying that you found it like that from one day to another, if it isn't a result of an accidental impact caused by you they should fix that by replacing the screen.
