[Q] Will a custom rom help with input lag? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just purchased a Moto G XT1032 (Canada Telus Prepaid if it matters) and it came with 4.4.4 out of the box. I'm coming from a Nexus 5 and I understand the Moto G is not built to compete with the N5 but I'm disappointed with the touch response or I think "input lag". Although I have a Nexus 5, I've never rooted or flashed any custom rom before so I have no idea if that will help on the Moto G.
I'm satisfied with the performance of the Moto G except when it comes to just the general input lag which I'm not really sure is a result of the cpu/gpu/memory. I have an older slower single core Windows 7 phone which is able to keep up with my finger location.
To demonstrate my issue, if you go into developer settings and set pointer location on and then move your finger quickly across the screen, the pointer location is always about half a centimeter behind my finger trail. On the N5 the pointer location is always tracking my finger. I can't outrun it. This happens at all time, even right after a reboot, so it's not due to cpu/memory suffocation. I just wonder if it's Android in general throttling the system to keep the system from avoiding lag or if it's just a touch driver issue?
Would trying a custom rom help? My brother has the same Moto G and the input lag is the same on his so I highly doubt my device is defective. I have a few more days to return the device. Again I'm not complaining about the performance of the device in general, I just wish it would register my finger movements more quickly. I play Wordaments a lot which isn't an intensive game, but the audio/visual feedback of my finger movement does help me keep my rhythm/tempo going. Even on my very old Windows Phone 7 LG Quantum, which is a single core 800MHz or 1GHz, I can score better because of the audio/visual feedback is faster. Also tried a new game last night called Sky Force 2014 and found it very aggrivating to play on the Moto G. The ship I'm controlling moves delayed compared to my finger location.
I do not have the maginification gesture set to on, so it can't be that either.
Thank you.
Edit: Just tried the same stuff on my mother's Samsung Galaxy S2 with 4.1.2 stock which is a slow device and it had just as quick finger/pointer location tracking as my Nexus 5. So this must clearly be a touch driver issue. I'm just looking for someone who can confirm that a custom rom can improve the touch input lag on the Moto G, so I can better decide whether to keep it and try experimenting with it or rather just accept that the touch hardware is capped at this speed and should return it.
Edit #2: The N5 and SGS2 have screen protectors, while the Moto G's and the LG Quantum are bare glass. The SGS2 is 480x800 to the Moto G's 720x1280 so it does have an advantage in that the gpu has less pixels to draw but still in the case of the pointer location it's not really drawing much, just a cross-hair and pointer trail.

I think you have a defective unit. Return it and get another one. Mine works like a boss so... Good luck

I have no imput lag too, maybe it's just your device and you should try warranty.

Thanks for the input guys. I must be quite unlucky, I bought the other one for my brother over a month ago and they both behave the same. He came from a Samsung Discover so he doesn't care.

played with newest batch of tabs and wamt to know about gyro

The last night I played with a brand new g tab at the office depot. the manager said it was just sent to them a few days ago they put it out brand new per viewsonic and removed the old unit. Anyways I was very impressed because the touchscreen actually works wonderfully on this 1. I install the latest firmware and rooted it in the store and play with it for a little while. however my question is I'm debating whether to buy the galaxy tablet or the g tab have an wanted to get opinion on the gyro in it as I have not been able to pick 1 up and play with it and wanted to know comparing it to the galaxy tablet how well the gyro works with games or if it even has that technology I have played with the galaxy tablet and it is extremely percise when turning the unit.
I've got labyrinth lite on my gtab, and the gyro sensors work great on it, didn't have to calibrate or anything. Thats about the only motion game I use. Adw launcher is very quick and snappy when rotating the screen
I've tried Raging Thunder lite from market on my Gtab (stock), and it's pretty responsive... enough to get into 3rd place ...
Is there something on the box that indicates whether the device is a newer or older build??? I'd like to check this out.
I was wondering what the model number was too? Thank you! There have been reports of a new model floating around.
I'm not sure but I know if a new model Does anyone have hands on with the g pad and a galaxy with using the gyros
There are issues with the gyroscope/accelerometer unfortunately. I'm not sure if its the problem with the gtab or issues with the specific games. Many games are optimized for accelerometers from phones and those don't gel well with the gtab.
Raging thunder 1 and asphalt for example has issues. Try raging thunder lite (free). You'll see that you are not able to turn properly. You're supposed to turn by tilting left and right but the game wont do that properly on the gtab. It will turn left and right in game by tilting forwards or backwards.
Raging thunder 2 though will turn correctly though.
Does someone think this could be similar to the calibration of the touch screen, that there may be an easy way to calibrate for the gyroscope/accelerometer?

[Q] Should I buy?

Hello everyone,
I had wanted the Moto XOOM since it was shown off at D but every since I saw that $699 price tag I have been very disappointed. I want to stay at the $500 level... Although I love Android and I am a die hard fan and prefer it over iOS any given day, the iPad is not a bad option because my main purpose for a tablet is to quickly browse the internet while watching tv or something, without having to pull out my laptop.
I do not know why or HOW the G tablet completely surpassed my brain and eyes, but I just learned about this bad boy today! So far I have fallen in love with it. It is a XOOM, minus the dual cameras and 3G (later 4G) which I really do not care about. Other than that hardware is same for the most part (which is why I love the XOOM and now falling in love with the G tablet)
My question is how satisfied are you guys with the performance or the device? Is it what you guys expected? Are there different ROMS available? and if so then which one is the most stable and what issues it has, if any?
Thanks in advance I look forward to reading what everyone has to say!!
Hi,
Welcome to the forum. The answers to all of your questions are here, you just have to read a few dozen topics. The four sub-forums under the Viewsonic G Tablet heading will provide all the information you need to get what you need out of the G Tab.
The short answer is, "Yes, you should get one immediately!"
I am running VEGAn-Tab and have almost everything I need in a handheld device. On a scale of one to ten - my Gtab is about an eleven ... for me. Your mileage may vary, of course. Out of the box, it is about a five or six. But once you flash a ROM and do the Market fix, the heavens will open up for you and manna will rain down!
OK, I exaggerate a little! But only a little. Read the more recent reviews on Amazon.com and the forums here and you will see what we really think of them. Mine has changed my whole daily routine in a good way and my 17-inch HP notebook is now sitting in its messenger bag, possibly facing a new life as my wife's main computer. I am also looking at getting one for each of my support techs at the office, once I find a decent VNC client.
You will find, after reading some of the threads here, that the devs at xda-developers are doing amazing things with/for our little electronic buddies. It will likely serve your needs well.
Thanks for the input, really appreciate it.
I currently have an Incredible and am changing roms left and right and see that almost every ROM has SOMETHING that is not working, with the exception of maybe 5 that are solid from A-Z.
How many roms are there for the g tablet and how many of those are FULLY PERFECTLY functional?
Theirs quite a few people working on Roms and updates are pretty frequent so bugs are being worked out!(most already have) The most Stable roms out for G tab are the Vegan Beta 5.1 and Tnt Lite ones. Tnt Lite more stock Tap n Tap u/i if you like that or Vegan if you prefer more stock Android. Speeds is pretty snappy. faster than any phone ive had. The screen isn't the best but its still fine for me. It uses a laptop screen instead of an Ips like ipad or phones. bad for portrait mode good for landscape. in Short, Screen is so-so, Roms make this thing fly, Very Good tablet and very open. In a Sense it already comes Rooted. Flashing roms and kernels is cake and This thing is near impossible to brick!
In my opinion the G tab is a good example of the spirit of libre software coupled with nice hardware. It is locked just enough to keep someone from acidentally crippling their device, but if you want you can put damn near anything you can compile on it.
I can't speak for Motorola from experience, so I won't say anything other than that I don't trust or like them.

Help me choose a tablet?

I have been searching but sites don't give much details.
My friend has a A500 and another has an Asus and they both have poor touch sensors, when selecting a word when typing it chooses the 4th word instead of the 3rd for example.
So I am looking for an Android tablet with a good sensor.
Dont care to wait for a Tegra 3.
My requirements in order of importance:
Very good touch sensor.
Needs HDMI out and 2 USB. for keyboard, mouse/controller and TV out.
10" screen.
Available to have Android updates either through being Rooted or not if possible.
Headphone out.
non-pentile screen.
things I dont care about:
Hardware keyboard
Software UI mods and additional apps
Camera
Sim card
removable SD card
overall size and weight
I think the word selection is a problem on most honeycomb tablets. I myself have a transformer and i mean maybe once every few weeks the touch sensor doesn't work but you just turn the screen on and off and it's fixed. The TF/Prim has hdmi and and you get USB with the keyboard dock. I would highly suggest you wait and pick up a Prime assuming they didn't go the route as later transformers and lock them down. But anywho Asus has proven they are good on updates

I had this on my Nexus One, it drove me crazy for a long time always having to turn the screen off constantly when using it at certain angles, sounds like a hardware problem, I wouldnt be surprised if Asus and Acer get their touch sensors from the same company.
Well with me it's a "ohh it will only take 10 seconds" really it doesn't take that long
I don't like any of the tabs out right now that most can buy, I would say the 10.1 seems like the best. I think the 8.9 could be better, but I have not tryed it yet. I would wait for the prime if you can.
i recommend these two to u, my brother decides to buy a tablet, too. These two are his results of searching. He will buy either of them. so posting here and offers u more options. : )

IPS screen, this screen is excellent! Its ability of video is strong and pwerful.

also IPS screen, and the ability of game-playing is stronger than the former tablet.
as far as i'm concerned, i suggest u not to wait for tegra3, it must be very expensive.

User Review: ZTE Blade V

Greetings fellow xda members and modders!
Having received my ZTE Blade V one week ago, I felt like posting a small review about the phone, its capabilities and my experiences from it, as i have noticed that this phone neither exists in XDA database nor has any relevant topics for it as well.
Before starting the review I would like to state that i live in Greece, where the phone is priced at 159€. For a quad-core phone with no sim-locking that is considered a real bargain. With that covered, we are ready to begin our review
Design
Design-wise, the Blade V is far from perfect, but fairly decent considering its price. Its corners are rounded off and the exterior of the device is clean and simple. It could be even better if the micro-USB port was placed to the bottom of the phone though, beacuse on the left side of the phone you can easily feel a small bump. A camera button would be a nice addtion as well. With dimensions of 126 x 64 x 10.9 mm and a weight of 130g, you might expect a somewhat big and heavy device, but it still manages to fit comfortably in your hand, whether you are left or right-handed, providing easy access to all of its controls.
When you see the back of the Blade V, you momentarily forget that you are holding a device in that price range. The back cover design is very similar to that of the Galaxy S3 (should you choose the black version) and there are no flaws to be found. The back camera could be a little more protected though. The overall quality of plastic seems to be pretty good, and even after removing the back cover many times, there was no squeaking to be heard. Last but not least, the battery is removable which is a big plus for many users.
Display
Many android users (including me) have a lot of requirements when it comes to the display, beacause it can either ruin or boost your experience. Fear not, because Blade V will not dissapoint you. It features a 4-inch IPS LCD multi-touch screen operating at 800x480 pixels which outputs 16 million colours. Sure it is not as sharp and vivid as displays featured at more expensive phones, but it provides a rewarding experience whether it comes to multimedia or daily use. It can be very bright if required and at maximum brightness the screen can be seen even under direct sunlight.
Camera
The device features 2 cameras, but the lack of video calling limits the use of the front VGA camera to taking selfies and using it for skype calls ONLY. The back camera is rated at 5 MP and the lens seems to be of decent quality. Pictures are shot at 2592х1944 pixels, with the user having the conveniences of auto-focus, panoramic shot, picture timer, photo filters (sepia,b/w,negative) and a LED flash which can be set to on,off or auto.
When it comes to video though, many will be dissapointed. While the quality remains decent and the movement fluid, the phone is unable to shoot in HD, with the user being limited to 480p, qvga or qcif quality. Additional choices for video capturing are light on/off (the LED one), the adjustment of white-balance, geo tagging and two codecs: AMRNB and AAC.
Internal Hardware
The main selling point of this phone is its hardware. For 159€, you get a phone with a quad-core CPU, 1 GB of ram, and 4GB internal storage (up to 32 GB with micro sd), with only 2.5 GB of internal memory accesible to the user though. Now let's dive into some technical details: The CPU is a Qualcomm MSM8225Q Snapdragon clocked at 1.2 Ghz. While not top of the line, in combination with the Ardeno 203 GPU and 1 GB of ram, it can promise a responsive,lag-free and fluid experience, from daily use to gaming. I have to mention that I installed A LOT of apps (aproximately 800MB) of varying requirements and still not managed to bring it to its knees. The internal storage is more than enough and gives you room for plenty of applications, but don't expect to be able to install large applications such as NFS Most Wanted, because you might run out of memory.
As for connectivity, the device lacks 4G features but in turn provides full 3G, wifi and bluetooth.
Software
There is not much to say here, as ZTE have done little to customize Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. What must been mentioned though, is a convenient application called Mi-EasyAcces, providing easy acces for up-to 6 user-set applications without having to unlock the phone. Last but not least is the really nice Mi-POP application which enables you to have a back button available anywhere on the screen in order not to have to move your finger down all the time. Otherwise the UI is the same like factory 4.1 Jelly Bean with a launcher
Battery
For the last part of my review, i feel like covering a very important issue of today's smartphones- battery life. The battery is rated at 1800 mAh and provides very good battery life, to the point that a full charge is able to last you two days with medium brightness, moderate use and good coverage.
Conclusion
Before i bought the phone, i believed that this level of experience could not be provided under the 200 euro price tag. Well, this phone proved me wrong. The device sure is not high end but it provides a really impressive and smooth performance. Rooting it was a piece of cake and many people here expect it to become a great modding platform, given its Qualcomm CPU and the spec/price ratio. Even for the basic user, who has no modding knowledge or experience, it is a great entry-level phone for a great android experience
I would like to thank everyone for your time, patience and support you have shown me since i registered at XDA, no matter what problem i have faced. I would be very delighted to see your comments, opinions and experiences with the device, as well as constructive critisism for future posts.

UPDATE:
ATTENTION FELLOW READERS! After ROUGHLY one month of regular use, the screen started showing flashing white pixels on dark images at the bottom left part. They appear to flash rapidly and range from 3-5 pixels per blink. I REALLY hope ZTE covers this, otherwhise they gained one VERY unhappy customer

What a thorough review, and an interesting read. I feel your pain with the display issues that you're experiencing and, like you, really hope that ZTE comes through and does the right thing. If they don't fix or replace your phone, you should write a letter to the editor of one of the local techie publications and get some exposure on the issue...and, in so doing, help others to avoid a similar fate.
Best of luck and please let us know how it turns out!
Thank you for reading my review and providing me with all this great support, I am really grateful. The issue has mysteriously vanished when i booted up the phone this morning and has not occured ever since (knock on wood). I will try having a Drag Racing marathone to stress it a little bit, in order to check the stability of the device or if any issue will appear again. As you might guess, ZTE's reply to the issue is no-existant and i really hope that they should have reached a solution if this unacceptable problem ever plagues me again.

Hi, this pixel error is returned? This is ROM bug? You tried the latest Virgin frimware?
No, this pixel error has fortunately not returned since the last time i posted about it. It could have been either a ROM or an application bug by the looks of it. The phone is still running on the stock ZTE rom and is rock solid. In Greece the phone is sold unbranded and unlocked
any chance of a link to the stock rom please?
the only link i have been able to find is this one https://mega.co.nz/#!5Ig3ECwD!R21Vik...2PLpeXW1eFZJFI
which was included in this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440697
and this link from another forum
http://www.modaco.com/topic/365062-zte-blade-v-stock-roms/
i have not tested them myself though
PS: I apologize to the administration and the community if the use of external links is forbidden, my purpose is to help a fellow friend. If, for any reason, I break any posted rule please notify me and i will edit my post immediately
I also have this phone and I have had not problems at all with it. Great value for money
Update android zte blade v

If someone can give me some information about whether a new version (unofficial) and the installation process.
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Is Spen & Digitizer significantly better with Note 10.1 2014 Edition?

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has any hands-on experience with the Note 10.1 2014 edition and can comment on whether there are significant improvements in the accuracy of the Spen with the 2014 edition in comparison with the original Note 10.1.
I'm not referring to extra features, but rather improved accuracy in writing and drawing. I also and emphasizing that whoever wants to comment on this to please have actual hands-on experience with both tablets. I am trying to make a decision on whether to upgrade, and the only thing so far that would make me want to upgrade is if there is some real improvement in pen accuracy.
Thank you

Discriibe what you mean by accuracy as it draws whar I draw and types what I write.

Actually, I'm also interested in the OP question. I find that that the tip is displaced from where it is registered and that this gets worse the nearer the edges you get. It's also insensitive to the tilt of the pen so how accurate the tip gets depends very much on how you hold the pen and what angle you hold the tablet. At the right angle it's pretty good but if I put the tablet flat on a table and try to take notes it gets very inaccurate.
If you're just making continuous smooth curves it's okay as it tracks the movements of the stylus quite accurately. The issue is if you need to go back over what you've written/drawn because where you place the tip won't match where the next stroke appears.
I fear many of these problems are limitations of Wacom's technology. The issue of inaccuracy near edges/corners appears to be a common complaint among a number of devices that use Wacom digitizers and because it's the base of the pen not the tip that's recognized and there's no active tracking of stylus tilt the angle issue is inevitable unless you're holding the stylus at 90 degrees at all times.
That being said, I played with some Windows 8 based machines on the weekend to compare the stylus. The Surface Pro uses Wacom, I believe, and had some of the same issues, although it seemed to be somewhat more accurate over a larger part of the screen only got bad at the very edges.
Another big advantage of Windows 8 is it has options for left and right handed use and a recalibration option built into the driver. Both features should improve accuracy somewhat based on how you hold the stylus. Driver improvements could significantly improve the experience on the Note 10.1 if Samsung were to implement them.
I also tried a Sony Duo 13 laptop which uses the N-trig digitizer. The pen has to have a battery so it's bigger and heavier, although I don't mind that. I also found it triggered strokes when it was hovering (not touching) sometimes and sometimes failed to trigger when touching. I don't know if this is a general problem or maybe the battery was low or something. I will say, though, that the positional accuracy of the stylus when it worked was significantly better than the Wacom digitizers I've tried. So much so that I'm seriously considering that machine as a replacement for my laptop. But it's more the size/weight of an ultrabook than a tablet. Too bad Sony didn't include the N-trig in it's android tablet which otherwise looks pretty nice.
the issues described by tmagritte above include what I am referring to.
I just picked up the 30GB wifi version last night and can confirm that problems still remain. I went back to Best Buy today and both their demos are similarly inaccurate. It is pretty good until you are within 1 cm of the edge of the display. The easiest way to observe the issue is to use a drivers license or similar as a straight edge and draw horizontal and diagonal lines in the S Note application with the grid paper background while maintaining a constant pen angle. I'm shocked that Samsung still hasn't released a calibration app for the Note series.
Hello.
My wife just bought this tablet, the 2014 10.1, and she is very distraught over the inaccuracy of the s-pen in certain areas of the screen, especially in the middle of the screen, when she draws a straight line through the middle of the screen it bows around 2 center point in the screen, making underline text that you've written almost impossible on those parts of the screen. Has anyone else noticed this particular inaccuracy or do you think this tablet is defective?
We have another 3 weeks before opening a case on ebay, we bought it refurbished, sealed in manufacture box.
EDIT: I just found the cause after some tinkering of my own.. The Magnet in the flip cover case she was using was distorting the s-pens accuracy, removed the case, works just fine now. Be advised, this happens, apparently.
