Hi everyone
I have a GSM HTC M8 which used to run Kit Kat 4.4.4 stock with Sense.
I wanted to convert to GPE with the official RUU, so I set out to do that and getting to the S Off section I encountered a problem;
Obviously, firewater didn't work. Therefore I was stuck with an unlocked bootloader from HTCdevs and the insecure kernel InsertCoin.
I downloaded Sunshine, hoping it works for me, but it wasn't compatible with InsertCoin -.-
after that, I downloaded the near-stock ARHD 4.4.4 Rom, installed it and SunShine gives me (Incompatible)
OK! so I followed a thread here for a multicarrier lollipop 5.0.1 Rom which works perfectly, but still giving me the same InsertCoin error when I try to use Sunshine.
QUESTION IS: are there any custom Roms that are guaranteed to work with SunShine ? anything else I need to know?
all I want is to flash the GPE official RUU and receive OTA updates and live happily ever after, if you can help I will love you to death.
Thanks a lot for reading this keep being awesome
Hi,
There's never any guarantees, but Maximus HD worked for many. However, if you are 4.4.4...some have had trouble. If you're Verizon see the update at the very beginning of post one here,
> General discussion > Paid Software Announcement and Discussion > [Android][Unlock/S-OFF] SunShine for modern Motorola & HTC devices
You can ask for help there too... But the devs give better support if you go to their site and get support there.
Good luck!

Oh, and I doubt it works at all on Lollipop, but maybe I'm wrong. Read the last few pages of that thread to see what others are saying.
Thanks a ton for your help
But apparently (and after I've tried stock Maximus HD, GPE 5.0.1 DigitalHigh) and receiving the incompatible message, I went to the sunshine IRC and beaups told me that it's a known issue and should be resolved in the next major SunShine release around January.
So I'm basically chilling with the GPE 5.0.1 ROM until I can actually get the real deal.
Anyone having the same issue I suggest you wait it out.. only 2 weeks till january
Good! ?

Hello all my htc one m8 is sim unlocked, bootloader unlocked(htc dev),rooted(twrp/supersu 2.14) and s-off(sunshine) just flashed over arhd 21.0 and now i cannot turn on my wifi. Any help is appreciated thanks !
Hi,
You should read through the ARHD thread, or any rom you ever flash... Cause most popular issues will always be talked about plenty in the last several pages of the thread. ?
And your issue is your firmware. It's needs to be updated to run any 4.4.4 roms on the M8. Since your S-OFF, here's the easiest way to do that,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/firmware-flashing-panic-attacks-t2824048
You can ask for help there if needed. Or again, read the last several pages of the rom thread.
Good luck!
First off, thank you KJ for taking it easy on a newbie..and I updated my hboot( 3.16 to 3.18) but my baseband is still the same..can this be the issue seeing how I'm coming from stock 4.4.2 (at&t) ?
And seeing how I have no pc is there a way you or anybody who reads this can send me a link to the latest firmware at&t cws__001 ? Thank you very much
Now I'm stumped. Renamed firmware to 0P6BIMG.zip and said update fail first time incorrect cid second time and it scared the living crap out of Me . Help me please help me please
Flashed back stock 4.4.2 sense until I can get around a pc to get super cid. Probably best this way, but my hboot is still 3.18 and my firmware is 1.58.502.1 Now is this a no-no seeing how the stock hboot was 3.16 ?
It would be best to be asking your questions in the thread I linked.
Or this M8 help thread,

Thank you. Thread closed.

Anyone who would like to use fastboot/adb for this device please use the following version fastboot/adb. It's HTC's own version. It works on pc's with less ram and it automatically breaks up a single zip into pieces for transfer. It also reflashes automatically if needed.
USE IT!

Great job!
Sweet! Thanks bro =]
Nice! I admit that the firmware was confusing for me on this phone, but thanks to dottat's posts, I figured it out.
This clears things up a lot and should help quite a few people.
Thanks!

I managed to figure out the firmware largely due to dottat. There were multiple threads of various age, some with seemingly conflicting advice. This goes for most device forums I follow. There was no authoritative resource, IMO, until this thread.
The search feature was key, I am pretty thorough before embarking in firmware upgrades.

Your OP does contain the required information and instructions, so I can't really complain. One thing that could be helpful is to list the bootloader version info for each firmware release. You listed the most recent one right at the top of the thread, so at least it is easy to tell whether a given device is on the latest firmware or not. Because your thread is the main firmware thread, perhaps it would be best if the OP were organized into sections for 4.4.2, 4.4.3, and 4.4.4. It could be clarified which partitions are modified in the process, and whether the radios are affected. Install instructions could be put in their own spot.
These are only ideas! Also, your thread should probably be stickied. Thanks for all you do.

Firmware flash
Hello everyone. I am new to this Forum. I've only been here a few days. I have an Unlocked/S-Off Verizon HTC One M8 that I recently purchased from Ebay. I had a little trouble for a while when I first got it as it was running 4.4.2 and I took the OTA update to 4.4.3 and it messed up the phone. I didn't know it was Unlocked/S-Off'd. And the seller said it wasn't rooted any more. Well so now that I know it is even after running the Verizon RUU, I was wondering if I need to upgrade the firmware one upgrade at a time (meaning 4.4.3 and then 4.4.4)? Or can I jump to a 5.01 Lollipop ROM? I have TWRP installed and I used Flashify to install it. I'm hoping to use Flashify more for installing zips. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you....oh and I'm loving this M8!!!!

Rom and firmware are to separate things. You can flash straight to 4.4.4 firmware and then flash a lollipop Rom or any custom Rom.

Hello dottat. Thank you for replying to my question(s). Yes I know that a ROM is different than firmware. I was just wondering if I had to upgrade my firmware one update at a time or if I could just jump from 4.4.2 to say 5.0 or 5.01 so that if I wanted to I could put a custom ROM on my M8. I'm not actually sure how high the firmware upgrades go. I've only seen 4.4.4 as the highest so far.

You can go straight to 4.4.4 and get crack flashing. No L firmware yet as we don't have L official.

update process on factory unlocked VZW M8 used with GSM
Hi!
I am getting a verizon factory unlocked model and i am going to use it on a GSM network in india.Since its factory unlocked there should be no issues with the network. .however i had some doubts about the software updates. .so will i be able to receive and install updates normally without resorting to rooting the phone. .some people reported that they had an issue installing the update where it said that they have to be on CDMA or something like that. .Will i be able to overcome such issues by connecting to wifi?Is someone could shed a little light on how the update process works when used abroad with a GSM carrier it would be great!Thank you so much in advance!

You will always be able to install the s-on ruu from here. The problem is that the latter versions of software while sim unlocked have proven very difficult to use on some carriers because you can no longer edit apn. You have to chose from pre-provided apn and thats only if they show up with your SIM card inserted.
You would be really wise to s-off the phone even if you don't root it as this would be the only way to downgrade if you ended up not having a workable situation on the newer software.
So I have the Verizon HTC One M8, and saw that the GPE for the M8 has been updated to 5.0.1. I have the latest firmware for Verizon (4.4.4), and was wondering if anyone could help me at least root and/or S-Off my device since every method I have tried has failed thus far... Any help is appreciated, it's not urgent but it would be great to upgrade to Android 5.

Also I am new to this forum, so if I posted incorrectly I will happily fix it, just explain how.

Not that it matters in your case, because you understood what I mean't, but I feel I should reword my previous post for anyone else that might have the same question
You can root 4.4.4 but you need to be S-OFF prior to taking the 4.4.4 update. If you did not S-OFF before the 4.4.4 update you will be stuck S-ON till early January I believe it is when the new Sunshine is released.

Hi, I installed Android Revolution HD 30.1 but I get an issue with the WiFi and I learn that I have to update my firmware to 3.xx but I can't go in S-off... This means that I can't get Lollipop on my m8?
Hi
Please Read the first post carefully,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696282
You can update firmware, but you still will need to wait for Lollipop, as it's not out yet for Sense.
If course everything is easier and you will get Lollipop far quicker, with s-off.
Google Sunshine app for that method.
Good luck!
Running a HTC M8 on 5.0.1 and I have searched but have been out of the rooting business since my S3. Can it be done? If so, can someone please direct me to the appropriate links? I started to follow the sticky and got to Sunshine and it said no-go. Would love a stock GPE Rom installed on my phone. Any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately, the sunshine app is your best bet but you (and I) need to wait for it to be updated. There is another method, but it would require you to find someone with a java card. You can find more info about the java method in the forums. I thought about it, but i'm going to try and hold out for an updated sunshine app, hopefully it comes out before our next Verizon update so that any possible exploit is not blocked by verizon..
But until we get root, there are a few things you can do. There is the Google launcher or the Nova launcher, Adblockplus works on WiFi and there is also the Adblockplus browser for when you are not on WiFi, and the greenify app does have some limited functionality without root access.
If any of you guys are near PA I have a Java card and can do s-off

I drove seven hours (round trip) to get it done and it was well worth it. I would FedEx it to dottat in a heartbeat and just use a backup phone in the meantime. Who knows when sunshine will be updated.
Well, We are just waiting for them to get sunshine stable with our phones. Until then, Java card is the only way for those on lollipop

In the exact same boat as the original poster...
The last phone I rooted & installed Cyanogenmod on was an S3 & I loved it. The battery became an issue & I moved on to the HCT One M8 from Verizon. I typically wait until the first year of warranty is up before rooting. Well, never again will I wait as all the exploits are patched & Im stuck w/ the stock ROM & I am really missing Cyanogenmod. I live in the Greensburg area of PA, but not sure about driving to York PA for the Java card, though that is extremely nice of the person who offered. I am subscribing to this thread; as I cant find any root methods & look at least several times a week.

I typically wait until I've had the phone 30-40 minutes before rooting and installing TWRP and a custom rom.
Personally, I'd drive to York if I lived where you do. Since I'm 2,250 miles away I'd send the phone. As always, YMMV.
@dottat, I'm in the Finger Lakes area in NY. Where in PA are you? I may have to come and see you!!
Edit: Any chance you have a card for the M9 too?
The card will work for all. Just give him a pm
