Hello Guyz,
Can we play at-least 720p videos on our pico ?
I tried MXplayer with software decoding , but 720p video playback is laggy
Should I try custom codec ARMv7 NEON type ??
will it help ??

Hey guys I am having problem in playing a 1080p videos in my sg-r
since it's a dual core phone it should be able to play 1080p videos
can anybody tell me how to play ?
Download mxviedo player from market
Via galaxy s2 lite ......
try dice player or bs player ....
dont forgot to install arm7 plugin...
they r the best option as they are hardware accelerated....
njoy
I have tried these options but plyback is sluggish or laggy

From what I have tried dice player runs 1080p .mp4 files pretty fine.
But it seems you are trying to play very high bit rate 1080p .mkv/.mp4 files which I guess gets a bit too much for R / most other smart phones to play.
If the above is true then you'll have to convert those videos to a lower bit rate format.
Hope it helps.
But those videos were running on my friends sgs2 properly without Any third party apps
And I have read that sgr supports
Full he playback and now the native player is not able to do so.

becoz our tegra supports 1080 p video playing capabilities.... (as we can play in optimus 2x but only 24 fps)
butt somehow samsung has blocked some of the capabilities of sgr
1080p playback?
So in short we can't play 1080p videos on our SG-R?

We can play them buddy . . . !
I have played some good quality 1080p MP4 videos on my device. Its just that it shouldn't be a very high bitrate. I have yet to try any mkv files though, will try & update here.
Tegra 2 naively supports recording of 1080p videos which had been disabled by Samsung due to some reasons currently not clear.
But they can't block a device which naively supports recording 1080p videos from playing Full HD videos as it depends on which video player you use.
The generic Samsung player doesn't play 1080p videos but Dice player does and its currently free.
Hope this helped.

yup....we cant (only low birate videoz can be playble)...
until some dev here do some thing about it....
i think galaxy r has a weak DSP because it records 720p video and doesn't play 1080p videos and i think even 720p playback is limited to [email protected]/4 ref frames.
here is a 720p mp4 avc [email protected] sample for you to try and see if it works in stock player:
https://rapidshare.com/files/1822600111/720p_avc_high_l4_cabac_4_ref_frames.mp4
and here is a 720p mp4 avc [email protected] sample:
https://rapidshare.com/files/3012087529/720p_avc_high_4.1_cabac_4_ref_frames.mp4
the samples are only 2 mb, so please try them out in stock player and tell me the result.
thanx in advance
1) Why do you have to use a stock player if you can choose full HW-accelerated: Dice or MX player?
2)I have S2 - I can't really see the difference between 720p and 1080p on such small screen (4'3") and I don't think any human eye would see it

stock player also does hw acceleration, and if a dual core phone doesnt play 1080p video, then at least it should have full 720p support
yes but stock player doesn't play all video formats the two players above do.
BTW. these samples are far away from HQ-quality, especially divine enrique is extremely pixelated I don't think it'll make any difficulty for SGR, but let's wait and see.

stock player doesnt play all formats because it does hw decoding only while mx and dice can do both hw and sw decoding which uses cpu and drains battery much faster than hw
and it is not about quality(bit rate), what matters is resolution(720p) and codec settings([email protected] frames)
I tried to play these 2 videos..
stock player was unable to play both the videos..
but. mx player with fast sw decoding played both clips very well...

what??? i cant believe it, so i guess max hw decoding support is 720p avc [email protected]/4 frames like this sample:
https://rapidshare.com/files/2823428502/720p_avc_high_3.1_cabac-4_ref_frames.mp4
and i guess the same goes for galaxy s advance which records 720p and doesn't play 1080p

Hey i tried using vplayer to play a video, its still lags.....
The video is a dvd rip movie and a mkx format (i guess, though not sure abt the format) and apprx 1.7GB. When i tried playing through stock app, it didnt played.
When i tried using mx and dice, they played but a bit laggy.
but when i used xplayer, its more laggy
and upon using hardware decoder in mx,dice its unable to play
is there any solution play such video without any lag on our R ??

this phone doesn't play anything in stock player(hardware decoding) above 720p [email protected]/3 ref frames, you can download media info to know the specs of the videos you want to play:
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Download
i guess if you want play anything above that smoothly using CPU( software decoding), you should use NEON optimized codecs for the player you installed like mx neon codecs from here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.ffmpeg.v7_neon&feature=more_from_developer
but, you should install mx player first
Hey there,
I mainly use my tab for videos and ebooks, and i faced problems in running some mkv's.
basically i was trying to play an anime video by coal girls but the player did not play it.
These are 720p videos with flac audio.
Also happens with videos by re-packers like horrible subs and gotwoot...
I know that the tab can play 720p mkv's watched a lot of 720p movies on it flawlessly. But then why does it fail to run these.
P.S. : I also tried mxplayer but it plays the video on s/w decoder and that too very poorly even after enabling multi core decoding for s/w decoder.
Thanks in advance.

cant play 10 bit video's as well
well i tried playing some more videos, could'nt play 10 bit-720p-BD-AAC video's as well.. :crying:
Tried a lot of players, default samsung can't play it and players like mx and dice default to s/w which stutters so much that the video is unwatchable ...
I was hoping that someone had experienced it before and tried a custom ffmpeg i.e custom codecs to solve the problem.

Yup tried that, didn't work
yup i tried that even allowed the 10 bit video option, the video which i have uploaded just won't play on h/w or h/w+........
Can't see any other option now.Why don't you try to play the video i have uploaded...

plays fine on nexus 7
I played the same video on friend's nexus 7 and s2 which plays it pretty well on s/w decoder, however the tab 2 lags like hell in s/w decoder.....
Don't know what to do now...

Or you can use splashtop 2 (free on market) to stream the video to the tab... Works perfectly for those who don't want to convert tons of videos...
Final conclusion : There seems to be a problem with the native h/w rendering capabilities...so no software can help it..
720p mkv + flac audio or 10 bit 720p videos are not playable natively mostly due to the poor gpu, and poor performance with s/w decoders.
I use BS player. It plays everything, using H/W decoder. Plays local, or off the network.
Use the ARMv7 version, and also download the BS hardware decoder, it is vastly improved over the stock or AOSP one.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bsplayer.bspandroid.free
Tried it but fails to work in h/w

Installed bs player free + arm v7 vfp cpu from market, but it still plays the video using s/w decoder with terrible frame rates. Frame dropping option also dosen't help. And when i choose h264 hi10 to be played on h/w decoder , there is black screen with only audio.
Try the sample which i have uploaded in post 3 and post the results. I'm on stock rom so maybe cm/aosp plays it better. If so i may install a custom rom..
not possible to play 10 bit videos at the moment
So i finally dug around the forums myself and realized that there is no android device that can play 10 bit encoded videos at the moment, not even tegra 3.......
source : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1425664
At the moment, 10 bit encoding i fairly new and requires much more power than ur 8 bit mkv's which were used to have earlier.
So basically our tab can play 8 bit 1080p videos flawlessly, but fails to do so for a 10 bit 720p video on h/w decoding i.e ur stock samsung player will refuse to play it and all the players that u will try will play it on s/w decoder no matter what u try and yet u'll get very bad frame rates.
SO the solution is to :
1) re encode the videos, which did'nt work for me cuz i lose the subtitles while converting(some error)
2) can stream using splashtop2 ( free in play store) which is okay but need to have very high net speeds..... :/
If u cant play ur vid's properly, first see the details if they are 10 bit or hi10p if yes try the above.
Cheers

Hello. On MX player did you try changing the amount of cores used to 2 in the settings because it's a dual core phone? Also I noticed that your phone uses the Adreno 203 GPU. That's not a very good GPU for some HD videos. The thing is it depends on the codec the video is using. If the video is using h.264 with a .mkv container than you can forget about trying to watch that particular video on your device lol. I'd recommend using the .mp4 or .flv (youtube) containers. Those tend to work much better with lower end GPUs. Also it helps if your device has "HW" or hardware acceleration. If your device can do that then enable it. That should help play things much smoother.
Hi everyone,
My XL cant play 1080p videos smoothly even with MX player. It lags and skips frames many times during the play back.
Is everyone facing this problem?
But there are a few reviews that many can smoothly playback 1080p videos using MX player.
I also tried enabling speed up tricks in mx player settings,:crying: but no use.
I am using the latest MX player and my phone is on latest stock firmware(.14).
Please reply.

try VLC with hardware acceleration enabled, check your external sd card for read speed (with SD tools)
or kernel with light OC to 1.2GHz (which is stock frequency of MSM8230) but this is only for unlocked bootloader...
and after all there is no reason to play 1080p videos on device with XHDPI resolution (854x480)
