G2x 2.3.3 root question

Hi,
I dont know if am being really stupid or not but this is my first android device and first time rooting.( i have searched for hours now trying to find an answer)
So i am trying to root my Lg G2x running GB 2.3.3 using this link :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
so as of now i am on Step 2...what i dont get is when i click the link on step 2 it says to download ALL of these NVIDIA drivers and everything. All i did was downlooad the One Click CWM
Another thing this link does is send me to ANOTHER link saying that you have to ROOT first?
So from my previous knowledge i thought you could only "flash" the CWM if you were already root ( or maybe thats only for the ROMs)
alright then if thats the case...the directions of the original link just says to download and unzip...but do i put that root folder onto my phone(i read this from another link that someone else posted about)..The reason i am asking this question is because when i tried to go to Step 3 it said to Hold Volume and Power to boot CWM but nothing happened obivously bc 1. the directions say to plug the phone into computer at like step5 and 2. the files are on the computer
So in conclusion i guess i am just trying to make sure that i dont brick my phone by asking these lame questions
1. do i have to take those unzipped files and put them onto my Phone( more specifally, my sd card or phone?)
2. What about for the CWM download.. do i just download the One Click thing and ignore the other directions??

You have to do the one click thing first to install Clockwordmod with NVFlash.

Then you boot into Clockwordmod Recovery and run my booting zip.

In that thread just download the root zip and put it on your sd card or in the internal memory of your phone. Flash the CWM recovery and then boot into Clockworkmod Recovery by holding down volume down and power until fancy LG logo shows (about ten to fifteen seconds). Find the menu option to flash a zip from sd card or internal memory (wherever you put my rooting zip). Select it, flash it and reboot when finished.
Presto. Done. You are now rooted.

Flashing CWM and rebooting does not root your phone. You have to flash the root zip also, or flash a rooted rom.

Ok i am completly lost trying to root my g2x. I'v tried downloading the flasher yet nothing. I just need a step by step on doing this. Thanks!!

The original thread for the one-click flasher in the development section is one of the best step by step posts ever made on XDA. It even has a link for a video tutorial. If you cannot follow that then I suggest you stop trying to root your phone. There is no reason for anyone to make another step by step guide. To find the thread try the search button. There are also links to it in numerous other threads.

Are their roms on here that are bug free and stable for daily drivers?
Im coming over here from a HD2 which is not a native android phone. And I didnt mind the bugs in android.
But now I have a g2x and it is bug free though I really wish it had 2.3.5 but oh well this phone is still bad ass.
So what im wondering if I should just root to keep it stock and do lil mods or flash the whole cwm Process so I have a back up. If I ever need it.

I've kept mine stock for that reason, but I did root it. After experiencing custom roms on my Nexus One, A71 variant and others, I would have to say the frustrations stuff being perpetually broken, bugs and the monotony of daily flashing (CM7 just never stops) whatever small benefits the custom roms have (i.e., eye candy, additional settings, etc.) is just not worth the frustration and danger of soft-bricking the phone (I have hard bricked one also) to me. My Nexus One (gave one to wife when I got the G2X but then got another one at a steal) has gone through updates to 2.3.4 and 2.3.6 (yesterday). These updates seem to be mostly internal fixes for stuff. The average user (or even advanced) is not going to notice any difference in using the rom. The only exception to that is that in 2.3.4 Google removed the need to log back into your Gmail account(s) after changing sims. They said that was a minor benefit at a greater annoyance and the "feature" most complained about by world travelers. Other than that the Google apps get updated and even 2.2 devices are basically running the same Google apps as 2.3.X. So based on what you said above, I would suggest keeping it stock and simply rooting it. You definitely want to change recovery to Clockworkmod to make backups and the fact that going into stock recovery on this device does a factory reset (how stupid was that LG).

Thanks J you have been very helpful in my transition from hd2 to g2x"im still flashing hd2 I love playing with sense 3.0 and 3.5" But this phone is amazing. Ive rooted it and added cwm but have not flashed any cutom rome I like stability over newest features.
Is 2.3.3 the most recent update for our Phones?

Yes and we're darn lucky we have 2.3.3. No other 2X variant worldwide has received any update love from LG. They are all still on 2.2.x. Lawsuit in U.S. seems to be what forced LG into releasing the G2X GB update.

Phone is about to go THRU THE WINDOW

Ok so this is more of a rant than anything. This fumblin phucking phone is constantly rebooting on me, shutting programs while i am using them, freezing. BATTERY dies quick, phone gets hot when in use....
The only thing I have done to it was rooted it, using that one click program, very easy process (couple months ago.)
What can I do???, has any of you did something? This phone is stock. I used to have a Galaxy S CRAPtivate and I was a flashaholic (btw that phone was sh*t compared to this one even with the freezing) but I see MOTO wont unlock the phone so i was wondering does that mean I can't change roms like I did on my old phone? I also would like to know what bootload means because i have that installed too and dont know what that is? I am sorry for being a noob! and yes i did read the N00b section lol

Where did you find the bootload that you installed, I'd like to check that out. As far as the rebooting, have you tried a factory reset? And what size / class sdcard are you running?

-First, let's just calm down a little bit...
-Now, let's make sure you actually have an Atrix 2, not an Atrix 4G. What does Settings -> About Phone -> Model Number say?
-You installed "bootload?" I assume you mean "bootloader?" Where is the guide you followed to do this?
-Yes you can change ROMs with a locked bootloader, but you can't directly change modify the kernel. So it's hard to build any ROMs aside from derivative stuff (based off of stock Moto ROMs)
-What size/class microSD card do you use?
-Have you installed any apps/changed ANYTHING on your phone recently? Are you on GB 2.3.6 or 2.3.5?

If there is one thing I've learned since I'm back to stock waiting for the soak test to actually start is that stock sucks big time both in terms of battery life and overall stability (I've had a lot of stability issues with a lot of apps, even the stock music app(!) that I haven't experiemced in custom Roms)
I highly recommend installing a custom ROM. I've made pretty good experiences with ROMULUS (pretty much fantastic ROM) and Lithium.

Opps not bootload... I mean what is this Atrix 2 Bootstrap? I read over and over and I cannot find the definition of Bootstrap.... I was thinking it was like Clockwork and puts the phone into the boot screen? I never used it yet. The phone was reset to factory a few months ago, maybe I need to do it again? I have a 16gm memory card. I do have a atrix 2, I have both atrixs as a matter of fact, mb865. the only guides i used was the noob guide on here and i only rooted and installed this atrix 2 bootstrap. I have 2.6.35.7
i hate this friggin thing right now lol.. i will put a rom on it if that will fix this damn thing

I like to muti-task. I have ADD . this phone is not doing its job, I am starting to think no phone will. I HATE APPLE! I do not want a new phone lol. I want this to work! lol
Thank you for helping me so far, I havent done anything to it. I just play my little world war game, then i check my email, then i go to my texts and then it STOPS, (not in any particular pattern but it happens every hour.) Sometimes it restart when in idle, I see the stupid moto red circle from across the room and AHHH I get so mad lol.

The Atrix 2 Bootstrap .apk is the door opener to allow the flashing of CWM Custom Recovery on boot. You have to install the Bootstrap .apk, run it by clicking the first button, then the second. It will reboot your phone into recovery, where you can flash the CWM on boot Recovery found (use the ON BOOT WITH QORKING GPS on found in the forum here). If you're wanting to flash a custom rom, you will have to have these measures in place first, as this is the only way to install any rom. Please note that some roms are flashable .zips, and others are CWM backup images. Be sure you know what you are doing for each rom that you attempt to install. All of the necessary instructions will be listed in each thread for each of the roms available...
From the n00b's guide:
CWM is a custom recovery program that allows you to backup / restore a full or partial system backup of your device. It also allows you to install flashable .zip files; which is one of the primary installation methods for custom ROMs. It also provides other neat features such as cache wiping, battery reset, and other processes. Long story short, if you are thinking about flashing custom ROMs or just want a really good backup program, incase you FUBAR your device, you need to install this.​
For Atrix 2 Bootstrap:
1. Install the RazrBootstrap.apk
2. Select "Bootstrap Recovery"
3. Superuser will prompt for permissions
4. Select "Reboot Recovery"
When the phone reboots it will boot up into Clockworkmod Recovery.​
Again, to get the CWM ON BOOT WITH WORKING GPS look for it in this forum. Sorry, I'm being lazy and don't want to search for it myself...

[Q] Nexus 5 rooted unlocked. Questions on getting to 4.4.4

Before you ask, yes, I have searched. I also went through each page of the "Here are the similar threads we found:" section before posting. That is actually why I am posting. I see too many different answers.
A little background: I know my way around android in general and have been flashing roms since my G1. I used to be the "rom test dummy" for JesusFreak (yeah, im an oldtimer) so I am not afraid of flashing roms. I am currently running on a windows machine, but I have linux available if that is any easier. I am comfortable in either.
My question: I have a Nexus 5 with 4.4.2 (stock) KOT49H and I want to update finally. Each time I have tried the OTA it gave errors, and I eventually found that is because the rom looks for modifications. Out of the posts I have found here, I have seen some say you have to flash all the way back to stock and then start updating. I have also seen posts that say there are tools that will read your device info and decide what to flash. I have seen some that say you can flash a new (stock) rom over the current rom.
I have no problem backing up the device (I have paid premium) if needed. If I can flash without wipe, GREAT. If not, no big deal. My main thing is that I would like a safe route. This is my main phone so I need it to work. I would also prefer one of the shorter (of the safe) methods. I saw a guide a few minutes ago that seemed to say that you should flash 4x during the process. Once to clean the rom, once to downgrade, and 2 more to upgrade. I am hoping I read that one wrong, but that sounds un-needed. Is there a stock 4.4.4 rom that I can just flash on top of my current 4.4.2 and get it all done in one jump?

easiest way(if running a custom recovery).. find a rooted stock here in the andtoid development section, and dirty flash(no wiping) it over what you have. you won't lose any data dirty flashing.
if your completely stock, easiest way.. flash the 4.4.4 factory img via fastboot. but you will lose your data.

Thanks for the info, but can you point to a 4.4.4 rooted stock? I have been searching through the roms and most seem to be customized, not stock. Ive gone through about 7 pages now in http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/development
I havent flashed a rom in a year or 2 since buying Nexus 4/5 devices (hey, they just work) so I am a little out of the loop.

[Q] Need help flashing custom ROM

Hi Everyone,
As this if my first post just wanted to say that I'm relatively new to customizing my Verizon HTC One M8 and really tried to search around here as well as other places to find answers but I really just wound up getting confused and bogged up in all the different scenarios and things that worked in this version but don't know etc. so apologies if I'm asking a bunch of newbie questions I after a lot of hours I really just couldn't find an up to date comprehensive guide.
So basically I have a Verizon HTC One M8 running Android 4.4.4. and I want to install a custom ROM most likely the DigitalHigh GPE or Skydragon not sure which but regardless I just read a bunch of different guides and started getting frustrated when they didn't work (like going the HTCDev route to realize that that route isn't supported by Verizon or whatever). Currently I have Sunshine installed and am waiting to verify that I can move forward before paying for it.
My question is after I pay for and run sunshine whats the exact route I take to get to where I want to go? I've searched around and found guides but I don't want to be stuck with outdated information that might not work. Thanks a lot for any help you guys can give.

Since you are on 4.4.4 you first have to figure out if Sunshine will work on your phone, it's more recommended for users on 4.4.3 but you can still try as some people have had success. If it doesn't work, it will not charge so you don't have to worry. about paying and it not working.

Hey bud, we'll get you where you need to be. First off, unless it's the 4.4.4 under the Verizon forums, don't flash Skydragon as it is for the GSM version. I would recommend going with DHs, but beware *some* people have issues with data with that ROM. Here's the easiest way to get you where you need to be.
1. Go ahead and get S-off with sunshine. With S-off, you can flash RUUs.
2. Download this RUU and place it on your sd card, or use the executable method, both work flawlessly. Note that this will reset your phone, but you're flashing a ROM anyways. This is rooted. http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...ent/ruu-m8vzw-4-4-4-s-off-onlynewest-t2914914
3. Confirm root and download flashify from the playstore.
4. Flash the recovery of your choice (most, myself included, prefer TWRP)
Now you are rooted with a custom recovery and good to go. If you flash DHs GPE, you will need to update to the 5.0 firmware first for best results. To do this, just place it (https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95832962473400175) on your sd card and boot into hboot by turning off your device, then hold volume down and the power button until it boots into a white screen with multi-colored text. This is hboot. From there, the device should auto detect the firmware on your sd card and press volume up to flash it. Volume up once more to confirm it. To confirm that you are on the new firmware, go back into hboot and check the opendsp number, it should something other than 46.2.2. Delete the firmware from your sd card so hboot doen't keep prompting you to run it every time you boot into hboot. From here, you should be all good to flash DHs ROM. If there is anything else I can help with or you get stuck at any point, let me know and we'll figure it out.

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation! I suppose its worth mentioning that my end goal is to run a ROM that's close to stock Android 5. Certainly don't mind resetting my phone, I have my contacts and whatnot backed up and being my first android phone I have tons of crap I don't need on it anyway. That being said, would you recommend DH's ROM or another one for my needs? Also in step 2, to clarify, once I apply the RUU that will root my phone or will I have to do that with a separate method?
Also @The Stig 04 thanks for the heads up, I ran the test they have and it told me it would work with 4.4.4, certainly reassuring that they'll refund if it doesn't work so appreciate that

That being said, would you recommend DH's ROM or another one for my needs? Also in step 2, to clarify, once I apply the RUU that will root my phone or will I have to do that with a separate method?
Also @The Stig 04 thanks for the heads up, I ran the test they have and it told me it would work with 4.4.4, certainly reassuring that they'll refund if it doesn't work so appreciate that

No problem buddy! DHs is GPE, so it'll be the closest to stock android that you can get right now, well Google's take on Android anyways. There are a few AOSP roms running around, but I personally have never had an AOSP ROM run in the past year that wasn't ridden with bugs. Plus DHs ROM has an almost completely working Sense camera, which I personally found as a plus since the quality of the 4 ultra pixels on AOSP is almost painful haha. I think another good rom that is actually Sense based but looks and functions a lot like stock Lollipop is Unsense. So step two where you run the RUU will actually redownload and install the same version of OS you have now but it will come rooted and no other further action will be needed to have root access. I found this to be the easiest way to go about it without having to use ADB to install TWRP and flash SU. It takes a few minutes longer since it has to reinstall the OS but is less steps than the ADB route and far easier to explain. Either one will provide the same result, I just prefer the simplicity of running the RUU

Right on, I'll probably stick with DH's ROM. Thanks again, I'm about to hunker down and start this process, lol I'm glad I made the switch but am mildly missing the days where I could just click a few buttons and have a Jailbroken iPhone.

I had an Ipone for about 3 months and never had the guts to modify to because I didn't know how to fix it if I broke it haha. There are a lot of individual steps but the process as a whole should go smoothly. Just follow the threads and you will be fine and if you get snagged on anything or need clarification, just let me know man!

Hi everyone,
I am giving this phone to my mom since I don't need it anymore (bought Samsung S6 few months ago)! Phone is currently on Android 4.4.4 kangkat 5.1 and is customised pretty nicely( no Ads, working fast , no FC ,pretty snappy).
Should I update to Marshmallow before I give it to her or should I just leave it the way it is? She is just the regular user and will not use anything more that dialer, sms, browser, weather, calendar, calculator, camera, etc.. So just basic apps and I will strip this phone to bare minimum but was just wondering should I get her Android 6 on this (at least battery live maybe inproved?)
Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.

If you have the knowledge to do it, then yes, it's probably worth installing MM as stock and leaving it like that - no custom recovery, no root. That way she can get the regular security updates with the minimum of fuss. The uninterested user doesn't need the hassle of a rooted device. And easier for you in not having to strip the phone - a new installation will do that for you anyway, and will allow her to sign in as herself and properly own the phone.

I do have knowledge (well maybe I might remind myself a little using Google). I am running Xposed on this build and like I've said phone is super stable with this build but also pretty simple to use for basic /regular user. Future updates are just going to confuse her.. The only thing I would like for her is maybe improved battery live and that's why I would go to MM. I was also thinking to maybe get new battery on this one(don't know how hard is to change it?). Anyway thanks for responding ,

Flash latest 6.0.1 MM on it and lock bootloader... give it to her barebones and let her enjoy it...
just did that with my oldest brother who lost his phone to a muggin.... and its the easiest way for them to stay up to date on latest security patches, etc

I actually never gone back to stock so I don't know how hard is it and how time consuming is it? I am on TW recovery v2.7.0.0. should I just flash nandroid or do I have to flash factory image first and than lock bootloader?

You are right , I am not going to mess with battery replacement. The old one should be OK for some time ...

I would also not bother relocking the bootloader. How many threads in these forums contain wails from people who have cacked their devices and there is no way to recover because the bootloader is locked?

Stock is extremely simple. Download the factory image (Google "factory image"), unzip and run flash-all - obviously after you've got all your drivers set up to communicate with the device. If you haven't yet, I'll bore you again with recommending Wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit, which has a really helpful button to walk you through the driver setup. If the flash-all script doesn't work (it doesn't for some people), you can unzip all the components, put them in your ADB/fastboot directory and flash each component separately.

I just updated Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit since I had old version on my laptop. Should I use RESTORE/UPGRADE/DOWNGRADE option and than FLASH STOCK + UNROOT?
P.S. DONE.. Running MM now on it.

download the latest Factory Image
extract the image, place it on the platform tools folder of your SDK and double click the flash.all.bat file... let the magic happen
google returning back to stock, there are tons of tutorials out there showing how to do this.

I did it and phone is running MM now. I am amazed with battery life now, it is crazy good comparing to KK!
So I am now back to stock unrooted but I left bootloader unlocked. Will she (my mom) get any updates if this Nexus get OTA updates?

A stock unrooted rom with stock recovery is all that is needed for ota updates. The bootloader can remain unlocked for ota updates.

Update it now and give her. I was doing the same stuff with my mom and she denied which then later made me try this phone out. Overall it's good but battery sucks.
