[Q] Persistent loss of signal/reception! Please help! - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got a Oneplus One - and ever since I can remember my signal drops (from full bars to no service) once every 10-15 minutes. I've tried factory resets, caulkin rom, slimsaber rom, stock kernel, ak kernel, and flashing different modems - the problem is still there!
Does anyone know what I can do? Should I ask OPO for a replacement? Really hoping for a fix - any help will be greatly appreciated!

bump..

Can you provide a logcat/kmsg?

I'm not sure what that is tbh. Sorry - guess I'm more of a noob when it comes to anything more than simple rooting and flashing. Point me the right way and I'll get that to you

Okay - I've got the logcat and everything installed. As I wait to reproduce the error I realized that it doesn't occur as I thought it did.
The signal drops a lot when I'm driving or if I'm in a poor signal area. I guess it goes to no service when its switching between towers or from lte to h+ to 3g. If I'm in a poor signal area it does the same - goes from some service to no service.
But then again, i do remember it going from 4 bars lte to zero service and then back to 4 bars lte. Just don't recall if this was while driving or not.
I'm going to get you a logcat soon - perhaps take my laptop and drive around to reproduce the error. In the mean time, does the above information help at all?
Thanks so much!

Signal Dropping Constantly

Hello,
I'm at a point where I don't know what else to do. My signal is dropping and or changing from H to H+ to 3G to no connection constantly. I'm supposed to be on LTE. Everything had been working fine until this morning.
Here is what I've done to try and fix the problem:
- re-flashed ROM (Liquid Smooth, Paranoid Android, etc) Same results. And when I say I re-flashed I mean I started from scratch, cleared everything, etc.
- flashed different modems (3)
- went back to stock
- went to AT&T and tried a new SIM card
- pulled battery, pulled SIM, etc
Everything leads back to the same performance which is that my signal is not stable. I'm in NYC so I know my signal should be stable. It has been every day until today. And of course I did speak with ATT when I was there today and they said that there are no issues. I know they're right because every phone in there was getting LTE.
So now I'm thinking it's a physical problem with the phone?
Any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

Hey tony i know the isues you having but one thing you have to understand is that Network carriers Label the 4G logos"4g" although you maybe in a Hspa/Hspa+ location(which is more of a 3g+) lol
as for the data connection drop this has been an issue with JB for awhile where the apns wont stick either on boot or time out etc.....
best bet to know if its your phone or not is to revert to stock and test it if stock keeps the data connection then you know the phone is fine if it doesnt then its just apart of JB issues more then half of JB runners run into this issue.
He did go back to stock...
If the issue is still happening on stock, I'd say have AT&T replace the phone.

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, at this point I've done everything I could think of with regard to trying different scenarios. I'm definitely leaning towards the fact that perhaps the phone itself is on the fritz. Unfortunately the phone is out of warranty so I can't just have it replaced. I'm not due for an upgrade until June. And I don't have insurance on the phone. That sort of limits my options. AT&T did credit me $100 for my troubles, which is better than nothing. For an early upgrade I'd have to pay like $250, I believe (minus the $100 credit) in addition to renewing my contract with AT&T. Just thought I'd give you guys the breakdown.
Also, I want to reiterate the fact that I am in midtown Manhattan (NYC) where the signal is always full bars of LTE service. It's been consistent for months. This started yesterday (the signal drops) and has been inconsistent ever since. Obviously I've polled other AT&T users around me and they are not having any connection issues. And yes, I'v e gone back to stock more than once. The signal definitely comes and goes constantly. It's not just what the meter says on top of the screen. I use an application to see what mobile network I'm connected to and I'm getting the same inconsistencies looking there as I do when I look up at the signal meter in the status bar.
I had this happen too. Turned out my phone was broke.
I've got best buy's warranty and they replaced the phone. Sorry I'm not more help, but the fact that the phone just doesn't get a signal is a possibility. And I just wanted to let you know, you're not alone

Data Randomly dropping but signal fine

This is driving me nuts so if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears
My Nexus 5 keeps dropping data. The Signal bar will still display full with H, but nothing will connect. If I'm running a ping it'll just stop and then eventually kick back in with 10000ms or something - Anything else i'm trying to do just plain won't connect. Could understand if I was losing signal but I don't seem to be.
Haven't had a chance to try the sim in my old phone yet to find out whether it's the network or the phone - was just wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar? :S

happening to me with sprint 3g on the unofficial cm 10.2. have to toggle airplane mode, not sure if its a CM thing or a sprint thing since i literally flashed CM the next day i got it lol
still happens
a few cm11 updates and almost a month later its still happening
I just started experiencing this same thing in the last week. Real frustrating part of it (beyond the obvious) is that there is no way to tell this is happening unless you are actively using the network at the moment the signal is lost. So if the phone is in your pocket and not being used, you'll really have no way of knowing whether you are missing important phone calls/text messages simply by looking at the display of the phone. Each time I only notice when I am trying to load a web page and it says I'm not connected to the internet (even though it shows that I have a strong LTE connection). Talked to both Google and T-Mobile about this and both basically pointed their fingers at the other. I'm pretty convinced that the problem is on Google's/LG's end though.
Getting my third RMA in the mail next week. Will likely take them up on their refund offer if this continues. Believe it or not, the intermittent loss of data isn't even the reason I set up the initial RMA (or the reason I sent back the first two RMA's I received).
I have this on both Three and GiffGaff in the UK. I also had this problem on my old Galaxy S2, so maybe it's an android problem?

[Q] Signal drop/No service

Just wondering if any one else gets this, sometimes my signal just drops out and I get no service.
Then it comes back it does not happen all the time, I live in a big city Leeds infact so signal is quite strong.
Just wondering if it could be a fault with the phone?
Thanks
I've noticed it happens to me too.

I was wondering if its my device because I live in the city and the signal is excellent around here, my other phone HTC sensation never had this problem. Was concerned it could be software/hardware problem possibly.

It's likely the radio software.

It is definitely possible.
I'm on AT&T and have the correct APN settings and have called AT&T with my IMEI. I have significantly worse signal than with my HTC One X. I am not comparing bars to bars, but rather where the signal drops completely. In places where I had low signal but still connected I now have nothing.
Straight talk using at&t Sim and notice radio drops..

T-Mobile on stock ROM i had my first signal drops.
I was fine (or at least never noticed them) from the time i got my phone (day one) without any drops here in orlando.
Drove over to Tampa/Venice Beach area this past weekend and noticed some drops. Had about 6 drops according to my battery stats in 2 days. i had good to excellent coverage the entire time except when it would drop comlpetely (outline of signal bars)
would connect in a couple seconds, but i noticed over night, it would drop for a pretty large amount of time (like 10-15 minutes at a time.)
Mmm defo seems like were all having the same issues, wonder what it could be
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I had this issue too, and here's how I fixed it:
By default LTE is enabled, meaning the phone will periodically scan for a LTE network. If you're in a big city, you're likely to find one. Your phone will attempt to connect. However, it fails, meaning it will have to rescan the HSPA bands to connect back. That results in a few seconds of no service. Why can't it connect to LTE? Because by default, the APN is not the LTE APN, for Rogers at least. I'd assume AT&T would be the same. You can test this by dialing *#*#4636#*#*, selecting phone info, and selecting LTE only. You'll see that there is no service. I tested this in an area I knew had great LTE coverage, and that led me to the conclusion that it's LTE causing the signal drops.
So how to fix? Simple, just change your APN to the LTE APN for your carried. To do that go to Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names. If you're experiencing this issue on Rogers, change the APN field to ltemobile.apn. If you're on another carrier, you'll have to search for their LTE APN configuration.
After doing this your phone should start connecting to LTE again, and you won't get those annoying signal drops.

A few days ago I let you know that we'd be reaching out on email to some of you for some additional bug report data. I'd like to thank everyone who responded to our email -- the bug data you sent in has been helpful to us in tracking this down.
This is looking like a software issue on our side, and we're investigating a fix.

So yeah the next update will probably fix the issue. It's not so bad in the meantime, Lightflow sill notify you that your nexus has lost signal, and you still get the internet and incoming calls.
We're not alone. Supposedly Google is "aware" of the issue.
i've hcanged my setting from '4g' to '3g' to see if i notice a difference (hopefully will) then when 4g is released or i get a 4g sim, can move it back up
Yes, I'm having issues too. The real problem is the fact that I have a Wilson cell booster in my home (supposed to have up to 5000 square foot range) and my n4 had full bars most everywhere inside. With my n5 It shows 1 to 2 bars if I'm lucky and quite often drops to none! The only way to get full bars Is to stand right under the indoor antenna. Not impressed, and I sure hope this is fixable!

I hate to revive a dead thread, but I was wondering if people were still having problems. Once or twice during the day that I can see I will lose signal for a few seconds only to have it reconnect. Running 4.4.2 so the latest update did nothing to help the problem as far as I can see and I have messed with my APN settings. On AT&T. The Google thread seems to have a lot of different problems on the same thread, and it is a bit unclear if people are still having this problem. This is very annoying for such an otherwise spectacular phone. Thanks and sorry again for reviving the thread... :fingers-crossed:

Actually, there have been several threads on the issues associated with this (emergency calls only, missed calls, no signal,etc.). Ongoing and unresolved for some.

Appreciate the speedy reply. Hope Google gets on this fast. I also have LTE connection issues which has plagued both this and my original device so I am pretty sure its a radio issue. The phone loves to stay on HSPA+ even when there is a decent LTE connection: it's last in the pack to connect to LTE and first to disconnect when compared to others on AT&T.

My N4 with a combo radio sticks to LTE a tad better than my N5 with stock radio. Sadly, morrislee hasn't fiddled and combo'd N5 radios, and I'm not sure they've been tested and sussed out like the N4 radios. Citing the fact some with issues have flashed all the radios so far with minimal success means we wait for Qualcomm, after Google kicks them in the you know where.

Signal drops since 4.2.2

Hi everyone.
I owned a Nexus 5 one month ago, but unfortunately, it does not work as expected. On 4.4.0, I had multiple issues concerning network already (unable to switch to 3G networks only, very variable HSPA signal reception (from 4/4 bars to Edge exactly at the same place), ...). This issues were supposed to be fixed with 4.4.2 and most of them are, excepting HSPA signal which is still very weird. However 4.2.2 brings my phone another issue that I didn't noticed on 4.4.0 which is a very annoying and repetitive complete signal blackout (no reception at all (Edge/HSPA), even for emergency calls I guess). Signal drop can happen twice in an hour, twice in 10 minutes or may not happen at all 3-4-5 hours long. It's completely unpredictable. After a while, Edge signal (not HSPA !!) gets back by itself. If I wait 10-20 more minutes, HSPA comes back again, until it drops again.
Moreover, at phone boot, just after typing my PIN Code, it usually takes 2 or 3 minutes to catch a signal. Very slow isn't it ?
It does not seem to be a network issue, since my Samsung Galaxy S III doesn't encounter this using the same SIM card.
I read on Google forums and probably some XDA threads that I was not the only one to face this kind of network issues, even on 4.4.2, but issue description was each time a bit different from mine, thus I tought that it may be useful to post a new thread to describe precisely what was my problem.
Edit : My Nexus 5 is unlocked and rooted, but issue is present on untouched 4.2.2 also.
Edit 2 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525583 is probably my issue.
Do no hesitate to answer if you're thinking that you have the same issue (or kind of) or if you think that you know something that may help.
Thank you .

You can flash the radio from version 4.4 that helps a lot, I'm at work just search this forum the directions are here, it's easy.

^^ He appears to be talking about the link below. You can flash different modems that may work. Some people say different modems helped but I've had no such luck. I've flashed every modem available and still don't have data almost everywhere I go. I have data at home but that doesn't really matter since I don't need my phone at home.

Were would one find the carrier specific radio? I'm on T-Mobile but have only found the thread with modems. Nothing carrier specific.
Thanks for your answers. Unfortunately, flashing different modems does not seem to help .
i've read, the .15 is good with t-mobile.
i'm testing it today too. my problem is not only a signal drop, i have only edge too and my modem won't switch back to umts or hspa(+).
i'm in germany with t-mobile (congstar).

[Q] anybody else having 4g connection issues?

About 3 weeks ago after installing the update of liquidsmooth 4.4.4 i randomly started dropping to 3g service in places that i normally had full 4g available. It has slowly gotten worse to where if im not on wifi, than the phone is pretty much useless. i normally have full coverage everywhere. so i originally thought that maybe something had gotten messed up on the update, so i did a clean install of liquidsmooth 4.4, and blackbird kernal and same thing still occurred. also tried carbon rom and slimrom, and no luck. so for the fun of it, i went ahead and reflashed the phone back to stock from backups and rerooted it, updated the modems and reinstalled liquidsmooth w/ blackbird kernal, and same thing. i have went through all the mobile networks settings and tried everything and nothing seems to help, idk if that update screwed something up or if its an issue that others have been experiencing as well, or if im just screwed and my phone phone is dying.... any help is appreciated thanks

I'm currently running OmniToad, and ran CM 11M8 for a short while. On T-Mobile at least, with the custom ROMs it's normal to see H+ only when data is being transferred; it will drop back to 3G otherwise. When I ran the stock ROM on the Relay, it would always say "4G" regardless of whether it was in UMTS (3G) or HSPA+ mode. Apps like SignalCheck or CellMapper will tell you which mode it is really in.
On the other hand, if data transmission is only going through as 3G, it could be a phone issue or a tower issue. Is LTE available in your area, or are they just getting it set up? I know when T-Mobile was upgrading the Chicago area to provide LTE, there were a few glitches here and there.
It was stupid for T-Mobile to brand HSPA+ as "4G" but that's a different rant.

yea LTE has been in this area for quite a while now, i had it with my S4 and it worked perfectly, i never had a problem with the service on the relay either up untill a few weeks ago the internet speed and and data coverage was great, not quite as fast as the LTE on my S4 but it was still more than adequate, i used to use the hotspot and stream netflix on my laptop. now i can usually get a text to send but calls usually fail and if i try and use the internet its impossible. it almost seems like its doing the exact opposite of what it should be doing, as soon as i try and use anything (not while connected to wifi) than it drops coverage to 3g/edge/ or to nothing at all. Im leaning towards the hardware failing side, but i figured i might as well give it a shot and post it and see if maybe i wasnt alone. thank you for your reply.
small note of background on me: first time posting ever in this forum but have been using the tools and roms from it for a long time, so im not a complete noob, but i definitely still have a lot to learn.
