I accidentally deleted my launcher application while messing around in Titanium backup. My phone was getting hung up on the Samsung boot screen when I tried to restart it. I have now tried a factory reset, and the phone now boots to a black screen, I can receive calls and texts but can't access anything manually. I tried installing from the web market but that is not working. Does anyone have any suggestions? Much appreciated....I am desperate.
Edit: Also I can't mount my phone for some reason x_x

If you do a hard reset, you can restore the whole system. Deleting the launcher while booted in Android won't delete anything from the ROM and can be restored that way. But if you don't mind using a different launcher, you can load an apk of your desired launcher on the card and then find a way to get into any screen that will let you get to a file manager. Then you can install the launcher from the apk you loaded on the card. Mess around with the buttons and see if you can't pull up any screen that will eventually get to a file manager.

I did a hard reset, but now it has the same problem - no launcher. It is just a black screen. I played around with it for a long while before coming here trying to figure out any way to get into any menus etc...but nothing.
If you had your device in debugging mode, then you can always download an alternative launcher such as launcherpro on your computer, put it in your platform tools directory and install it through adb. If you need further help with this post your comments and I will read them later and reply.

hard reset doesn't fix apps in system partition, so you can't restore without adb to push a new launcher.

Held down the volume down, call, and end buttons to boot into a menu where I selected factory reset. The phone that I am having these issues with is a Virgin Mobile Samsung Intercept.
found a working solution for accidently deleted launcher in android phone
100 working
0) download launcher app from ur pc and place it in the root of mem card of phone and rename it as launcher.apk
1) press green button after switching on the phone
2) the keypad appears. now click contacts tab
3) try to send a msg to any one of the contact
4) the messaging service will now open
5) send any url from another phone to this phone
6) now clik inbox and then the url
7) the browser will open now.
8) type this url: "file:///sdcard/launcher.apk"
9) the installer now opens.
10) enjoy!!!

Is the phone rooted?
Do you have a custom kernel with CWM recovery?
If you do, you should be able to install the launcher using cwm.
There's a specific forum for your phone in XDA. You might find answers there to.

Although I have a g2x and I'm running a 2.3.4 rom, this should still work. I did the same exact thing to my phone. I had my wife send me an email (gmail) with a link to google in it. When I recieved the notification, I swiped down, opened email, clicked link, then searched "Go Launcher EX apk download". Once I found a good download for this launcher and downloaded it, I was good to use my phone again. Piece of cake

Hey i'm a noobie but i have a 100% way on how to fix your problem i was once too in that situation and all i did was enter recovery mode (no cwm/twrp) factory reset 2x, clear cache 2x and "Rebooted" When i was in setup wizard it asked me to set up my gmail account. Wifi is recommended but 3G/4G is also fine. If on wifi it will not connect to google servers but instead give you the option to connect to wifi. Connect to your wifi and finish the setup. When your at the black screen you should get a notification for updates on the play store. Tap on it and it SHOULD take you to the play store. After that search the desired launcher you want. (ADW Launcher, LauncherPro, Go Locker etc.
My P1000 shut down randomly, so I tried to put everything new on it. After flash and all the other stuff it won't run properly anymore. Everytime I get 'System UIDs Inconsistent'. used Odin and Heimdall, I did wipe the data and the cache, I can see with ADB it is gone, but after reboot all the corrupt apps and system failures are back again. I installed several different firmwares, nothing worked.
I have changed permissions with chmod and deleted by hand several files, amongst them the everytime restarting but crashing apps like skype and whatsapp.
When I perform wipe, delete, rename or move actions in ADB the results are what I wanted. But when I restart everything is back again. I even deleted almost anything, did not work.
This happened in all the roms I installed, so it must be a problem in the filesystem or so. Any idea how to permanently delete stuff while in adb shell? I already gave myself all the rights on the tablet, synced it after the deletes, nothing works.
Or does anybody know how to start from scratch?
I cannot start the tab anymore in normal mode, but I do have recovery mode and overcome cwm.

try plugging it up while its in cwm and access the adb shell while its displaying. the prompt should be ~# if its universal. maybe you can completely wipe everything and flash a recovery at the same time? that may keep it deleted. i dont know. just a suggestion. i hope you succeed... tell me how it goes.

i tried all that, even did a complete format of the internal sd card, in adb with parted and also in windows with a mounted card. it says it is deleted, but after reboot it is all back again...
Do you have a backup of a working ROM you can restore?
Crap.... Hmm... Have you tried any formatting software? Try to find a programmer who can wipe it completely, re partition, and reinstall the stock rom. Then try to restore to something before the problems

Recovery rom can be installed, but is gone after reboot. Formatting in windows or linux (adb) performs without errors, but after reboot, yes you guessed right, it is back. So this internal sd card has a life of its own, the only thing I can do is install a working system with flashing, but then no app will work, every activation of whatever app will give inconsistent uids errors. And I cannot install new apps, because vending.apk (market) will crash. I installed vending by hand (adb), then it work for a moment, but after reboot to use it the normal way, again crashed.
AS LONG AS I CANNOT REPLACE THE SDCARD IT IS HOPELESS?!?
This morning I left the unwilling android tab in the power adapter to be fully charged for a new go. But: it is now a real brick. It won't power up any more, the button lights do not flash anymore, the only thing it does, is showing the battery. Never again will I buy such an expensive underdeveloped piece of plastic crap again!
Calm down... You need to boot into recovery mode and try using formatting the sd. If comp can recognize, format the sd with the computer. It's not the android. It's what you did. Sorry

can you read? i did format the sdcard in adb with parted, i did format it on the pc. but when i reboot EVERYTHING is back again. before rebooting it is totally empty. after reboot the old non-working stuff is back.

I have managed to follow the instruction to root and install the google play store from this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1905674 but it also mentions the ability to remove the Monarch kids interface and make it a regular ICS tablet. I am unable to find the system/vendor files to remove them. I have root permissions since it allowed me to run Titanium Backup.
I used ES File Explorer and wasn't able to find the necessary folders to remove Monarch. Any advice?

Go into the settings of ES file explorer and check everything under root settings. The only folder you want to get rid of is the Apps in the vendor folder. Anything else can harm the system. I just used the cut feature on the apps folder and pasted it to my sd card to make sure it worked first. Good Luck!

I used TWRP to do anything - rooted or unrooted you can make change as you wish .
when you are in TWRP mount system then use advanced and file manager

I was able to get it to work by going into a startup manager and freezing kidsmode2 and nabimode. I erased the apps folder though cause I wanted the space freed up.

I deleted some files I shouldn't have. My nabi 2 keeps rebooting. It goes from the start up screen to "Android is upgrading..." Then back to the start up screen, then again. When I try to go to "Recovery Kernel" I get the Android laying down with the Red triangle over his chest..any suggestions?

1-switch off.
2-press power button & vol + together.
3-press vol - to go to recovery kernel and press vol + to select it.
3-android model should come lying down with red triangle!.
4-press vol - & vol + together.
5-select the system reset and press power button.
6-after that switch off and on with all new factory settings.

Completed the OTA to 1.9.37, root, and gapps install - had the upgrading message on every boot but fixed that with the new gapps package (thanks a lot to all the great developers on this forum!)
However I still have a problem since the root process that I haven't seen addressed so far after searching the forums.
After my putting the Nabi 2 to sleep and plugging in the charger, it will fully charge and turn the battery light green as it should, shortly after that the device then powers off and requires a reboot/cold start vs. just a quick click of the power button to return from sleep mode. It does reboot fine and has a full charge - all other operations are normal.
Any suggestions on how to eliminate this power down/reboot after charging?

I flashed your package but the android upgrading still shows up for me,only for a few secs and it seems as if no programs get upgraded...what are your thoughts on this? How can I find the stray files that are causeing this?

My tablet only boots in TWRP v2.2.2.1
I've flashed at least 5 different images in fastboot using at least 5 different methods. Every time I think I make any progress, I reboot my nabi2 and it reboots directly to TWRP. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you trying to flash a backup of 1.9.37 or just a program thru install? I know that if you wipe system and then flash another backup, if the backup is no good, twrp will not boot system but go right back to twrp. That is a safety setting, cause if it booted with no system installed you would most likely have a bricked device. That happened in the early days of Twrp, so they added the safety setting. If you flashed a backup, how long did it take, a good backup or image will take 10+ minutes, a bad 1 will say done in 1-2 minutes or less.
Might help if we had a little information about what you where doing.

I tried flashing multiple backups and they all go to twrp. The backups only took a minute or 2.

Ok your backups are all bad, that's why it finishes so quick and won't boot out of TWRP recovery. You will have to download a image file and get it into the TWRP folder on your sdcard. You will have to download it on your computer unrar it and name the folder something like unrooted 1.9.37 and transfer it to your micro sdcard. Then put micro sdcard back in tablet. In TWRP recovery, you will have to go into Advanced>File Manager. In file Manager, you will have to click on external sdcard and copy the file from there back to sdcard>TWRP>backups>serial#>unrooted 1.9.37 it doesn't matter what the folder name is that you put in the serial# folder but the all the others are as named and your new folder HAS TO BE IN THE SERIAL# FOLDER, or Restore will not see it. When that is done go back to main menu and Restore, you should see your new folder, choose it and swipe to restore. This should take 10+ minutes. You should be able to reboot to system then.

I'm having the same issue since the gapps update, where the Nabi shuts itself down while charging. Sometimes it can be a real pain to reboot after it does this.

In es go to the menu where you turn on root explorer and tap the words 'root explorer' then a menu will pop up, tap mount r/w and then set /system to rw. You then should be able to delete the files. After you're done deleting set system back to read-only.
Its been a while now, the issue probably triggered when I tried to set up multirom and install Marshmallow a few months back. I do not run multirom anymore, and even if I do a clean install (factory reset), when the phone first boots, it shows the "Android is starting" screen with "Optimizing x of 136" and takes a good 5 minutes. Why is this happening? After a factory reset I have no apps installed! I have deleted the multirom folder as well as the sdcard/Android/data folder, in case its picking up the app data in these folders to optimize. Is there something I'm missing?
Because when you flash a ROM or factory reset your device, Dalvik / ART cache gets wiped. While optimizing apps it gets created again...
I think goldengargoyle is baffled why there are 136 apps for optimization, when he erased all his data, including apps. This actually annoys me also, should't there be only a few(10-30) default apps to optimize?

To truly ensure the issue is fixed, back up what you need from the phone and fastboot flash a stock rom (preferably one of the last builds), let it boot then, go though the set up as you typically would, transfer the rom and other things you would like to flash to the phone, fastboot flash TWRP and finally, flash whatever you transferred.

Unfortunately my Nexus 5 kinda died on me today and I'm almost devastated. The phone froze and then restarted (I pressed the power button a couple of time, so I’m not sure if I restarted it or it did it by itself) and stayed stuck on the Google logo screen. I tried a couple of things but none works – booting it in recovery -> wipe partition cache; shutting it down and restarting it; leave it like that and praying to God…
I need your help. What can I do in order to fix this and keep my personal data on the phone – apps (with their data – I have a couple of journaling apps that are very important to me), messages, pictures, history, calls and so on…
The most important thing for me is to retrieve this data, so a factory reset is out of the question. Is there any way I can fix this? If not, how can I recover/retrieve all my data from the phone?
P.S. I'm using the latest Android OS, without that last OTA update, the booloader is unlocked and stock...
You could flash twrp, create a nandroid backup, copy the backup to your phone for safe keeping, restore the backup to an identical phone (you'll have to change the serial number of the backup to the phone that will be used for the restore), and hope it all works.
If you don't have access to an identical phone, you could try wiping the phone and restoring the backup.
You could flash twrp and copy off the important data.
Lastly, you could flash a stock rom, flash twrp, and restore your data and apps.

Thank you for your kind and quick reply. I'm almost a complete android illiterate so I will bug you with a couple more questions, just for a better understanding.
So flashing TWRP means installing it...
1. Am I able to do this, considering the state of my phone? And will I be able to do the nandroid backup?

The TWRP tutorial should be good - it's an XDA post...
You don't have to install TWRP, though it's a good idea unless you really don't want it. You can run it temporarily and on the next boot you'll be back to normal stock recovery. Booting temporarily will allow you to make a backup, but the risk is that you also back up the problem and then restoring the backup will also restore the problem - but it's worth a try.

Probably not - a backup is probably about 3GB, but if you manage to get as far as connecting to your PC and seeing your internal storage in Windows Explorer, you can copy the essential data (photos, etc.) to the PC and then do the backup and attempt the restore.
Press power & volume down simultaneously until you get to the bootloader screen with the green robot on its back. Connect the device to the PC - I'd recommend a direct laptop connection, not via a USB hub.
Start a CMD window and navigate to your PC adb/fastboot directory.
Type "fastboot devices" (no apostrophes) - if you're properly connected, you'll see something like "459uirgggg4 fastboot", which is your device id. A blank line means no connection.
To boot TWRP temporarily - "fastboot boot twrp.img".
To install TWRP permanently - "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img".
Once complete, use the volume keys to find "Reboot recovery". When you're in recovery, with any luck you may be able to see your internal storage in Windows Explorer, and you can at least retrieve your data. You could then try the restore, and if it doesn't work, a full installation of the latest ROM and rebuild your device from there (though Google automatically restores most of your apps if you had chosen that option).
Double-check these commands against other posts - I offer no guarantees, but at least a bit of hope...

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. Photos are simple to identify, take up quite a lot of room, and can easily be transferred to your PC for safety and then deleted from the device. Anything free-standing (i.e. photos, for example, are independent of the app which captured them) and easily-identifiable, copy and delete from the device. Things like SMSs are trickier, since they may be held in not-obvious places or formats. If you take a copy to your PC, and delete to free space, you may have enough space for the backup, but as I mentioned you may just be backing up the problem as well as the system (backups don't tend to copy user data).

Okay, here's the current situation - I managed to connect it to my pc and it's visible.
I saved my photos and cleared up some space. I now have 9 GB of available memory.
I tried TWRP (didn't install it though, as I receive an error, saying that it can't complete the command) and manage to boot it and enter the backup menu.
Unfortunately, it cannot backup my data, as it remains stuck on "updating partition details"...
Not sure what to do... Should I wait longer? It stayed like that for approx. 50 min, before I restarted it. Should I try a previous version of TWRP? Should I try a different program/method of doing a nandroid backup?
Also, there were options to backup my: system, cache, data, boot etc. Choosing to backup only my data would do the trick? As I said, I'm most concerned about my journaling apps, that were not backed up.
Anyways, here is something interesting that happened after I restarted it during the TWRP stuck backup process - the phone started and passed the google logo screen! And I managed to enter it. Things appeared to be normal and I was overwhelmed by hope. However, when I tried to open an app, it froze and started all over again. And one more detail, the battery was low, like 10%. It was low yesterday, too, when it died the first time. Could it be related? Do you guys make anything out of this? Should I proceed by backing up my data and flash a new OS?

The first thing to do is to get the battery properly charged. Some functions (I'm thinking specifically of encryption, which demands at least 50% charge plus the device plugged in) won't work properly on a low charge. It may not be the cause, but it certainly won't help if the battery is low.
9GB is now plenty to take an entire backup. The TWRP backup screen shows how much data is in each partition. I'm not entirely sure exactly what "data" does back up - I very much doubt (from experience) that it will back up things like photos, but as I said before some data is stored in obscure places and you may be lucky. Back up everything except cache - the defaults in 3.0.2.
Definitely back up EFS. Read around and see the havoc it causes if you have problems and don't have it backed up.

There shouldn't be any delay - my backups of 6GB on my N6 take only 5 minutes - the N5 is slower but not that much slower, and you have a lot less to back up. If TWRP still continues to be difficult, yes, try the previous version. Even back to a version 2 if necessary.
Try the backup when the device is charged, save it to your PC, and then reboot. Fingers crossed. Good luck.

Dahawthorne, thank you! I managed to make a backup after following your suggestion regarding the battery.
However, I didn't do a factory reset... not yet. Something strange happened while I tinkering with it (basically starting it and shutting it down with a furry) - it entered the OS! And everything was there and seemed to be fine, I was able to access my apps and saved a couple of things. But... when I clicked on a web page, it froze again and I was back at square one. Could it be that I have too many tabs/web pages in the background?
If it's only Chrome (or other browser?) that's making it freeze, you might want to try installing a different browser.
In the meantime, given your situation, I'd concentrate on recovering all the data you want and copying it to your PC for safety in case you have to resort to a factory reset or full re-flash of the ROM.
In case you can't find the data for the reasons I originally mentioned, you could try the Play Store for backup applications - e.g. there's a good SMS backup app which will back up & restore your texts. There may be something similar for your journaling app.
(And what's a "furry"...? )
