I had a working Transformer until earlier today when the OTA update came along. Having accepted installation, my device now gets to the Eee Pad / ASUS logo and hangs there (waited for about 45 minutes after the update). Trying to reboot into recovery gives:
Android WW_epad-user bootloader < e> released by "WW_epad-8.2.3.6-20110414".
Checking for android ota recovery
Booting recovery kernel image
It does not give me the Up to recovery, Down to wipe option.
Any thoughts on how I might recover the device?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Ohh **** that dont sound good
Sorry i cant help with any advice on fixing it, apart from trying a factory reset ?
Did you apply the update with under 50% of the battery available ?
No, full. And connected to the mains.
I cant get any option to do a full wipe, it never asks me.

There are some things you can try in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032374
Here a few key combinations for anyone interested:
VOL_DOWN + POWER (continue holding VOL_DOWN when it starts booting until you get a prompt) = Bootloader which offers two prompted options: (1) Recovery if you press VOL_UP within 5 seconds or (2) Data wipe if you press VOL_UP later. None of these seem to offer any USB devices like fastboot etc.
VOL_UP + POWER or VOL_DOWN + VOL_UP + PLUG IN USB = NVFlash mode. It clearly is the NVFlash APX device that we see appearing, but it barfs as soon as we run any sort of nvflash on it (Many Windows and Linux versions have been tried). Please note that in this mode the screen stays completely blank and the only way to get out of it is the following option:
Hold POWER for ~10s = Forced power off. This always helps if you are stuck in some weird mode and nothing on the screen
Dont know if any of these key presses will work on yours, worth a try to get it to recover ?
Yeah I had seen that thread. Unfortunately no joy from either option. I dont get the prompt when I do VOL DOWN+POWER, just seems to go straight into recovery. And as the post says, NVflash doesn't help at the moment.
Can't even seem to get the ADB USB devices to show up, I can only get the APX device which seems to be fairly useless ATM. Looks like I may have to RMA the thing.
What is that small hole next to HDMI port? Did you try that, it may just be button (use paper pin) to reset it to factory default?
Or maybe microphone ? lol i personnaly don't think those tablets would actually have a reset button, would check the manual first before sticking a paper pin into every holes...
My Transformer just came in, I accepted the OTA update and while installing it saw this thread and had a dreadful feeling. Thankfully, it rebooted fine and is working... sounds like something's wrong with yours unfortunately OP .
If you haven't tried the 10 second power button method as mentioned in an earlier post it's definitely worth a try.
stuntdouble:
I thought the 10 sec power button thing just turned the device off. Is there something else I can do that I am missing?
I think it clears cache and/or ram too. I'm not saying it will definitely fix your problem, it may not, but if it was me I'd try everything. It won't damage anything so don't worry.
Have you tried getting into the Clockwork mod recovery? You need to place it on an external microsd and when you do the holding down when switching on thing, it goes into the recovery on the card instead of the stock one. It might allow you to flash a rom to get it running again.
You can find the Clockwork recovery with instructions here
http://android.modaco.com/content/a...od-recovery-for-the-asus-eee-pad-transformer/
Good idea, unfortunately it didnt work. It doesnt appear to be allowing me to get to the point where it will read EP101_SDUPDATE.zip from the SD.
You sure filename is EP101? Shouldnt it be TF?
All the instructions call for EP101, but I tried TF too just in case!

It's a microphone. If you go poking a paperclip in there, good luck claiming under warranty.
Same thing just happened to me... reboot for update, stuck at boot screen.
Not sure if we can find a EP101_SDUPDATE.zip for higher than 20110414 if that'd be a fix or what... or even a PC restore process.

sonofab*tch same here. You would think they would warn people that this could happen. This is ridiculous. Their worthless phone tech kept traying to get me to hold f9. I wanted to reach through the phone and punch him.
So you are getting bricked units with stock? No modications or rooted devices?

I have flashed the CWM from TF201 by accident. Now the tablet is stuck in that CWM mode. I can't connect to usb using adb mode. Power+volume down does not work anymore. Any way I can reflash the correct CWM?
THanks
If you can boot to OS - you can use fastboot to flash any recovery.. or flash TWRP from goomanager.
upd: sry..don't see about "stuck".

I have made the same mistake. Although I can get the device to fastboot USB mode. I have tried to use CWM with the restore I made before I put in Cyanogenmod 9, as well as putting on the Cyanogenmod experimental #2 for TF300. No error messages at all and it wipes data and cash without any problems.
But I get locked on the Asus boot screen and it does not continue ie I am stuck as well.
I have as well tried to use the TWRP 2.1.5. I get the Teamwin loggo screen, it wipes all the data and verifies all the filesystems and reboots. Still stuck.
Is the device bricked ?
upd:The TF300 can not be shutoff either. When you hold the power button the screen goes black, but after ~5 s the device is starting again and is still stuck on the Asus bootup screen.
if you reboot it holding vol down and power, can you get back into the boot menu, to reselect fastboot?
if holding the power button doesn't switch it off, what happens if you leave it to run out of batteries then do this?
then you can flash the correct recovery.img

Yes, I can get access to the fastboot and I have already tried to flash with the recovery.img. I have as well let the battery run out and tried it once more with the same result.
Still stuck on the asus bootup screen.

Hare,
I have same problem.tab cannot power off. Just reboots into cwm.
I was thinking to drain bat. Thanks for sharing that info.
There are a lot of topics about people who broke their devices with TF201's recovery.
Afaik, no one recovered it. Send to Asus.
So the device is bricked then :'(.
Thanks for clearing it up.

Guillaume,
Thanks for clarification.
I have read that ASUS wants 700USD for replacing/reflashing the bootloader. That was for the tf201. Any way to nvflash it back to factory? I don't believe that they have to change the MB.
I have no warranty left, but I don't want to be gouged by them either.
Any thoughts, info?
Hi,
I've do the same mistake, but I can use adb.
Do youhave any news about our problem?
Thanks
Midyr
unable to power off
My issue is that I have the CWM for the tf201. I did the update from the CWM app in Android. Bad idea. So now the tab does not power off s.t. I can get into the power+vol down mode. Adb does not work since I cannot ( don't know how) to make it go into the usb debugging mode. I have tried several things none of which have worked. Still stuck.
I wanted some feedback for a RMA from ASUS, posted it here but sor far no answers.
Not sure if it would really work, but on my Evo, I don't have to completely power off the phone to do the recovery sequence. I can do it during a normal reboot. There is a point just before the device starts booting again where it is technically "off", and if I hold volume down (don't even have to hold power on my Evo; volume down seems to be the only necessary button) starting at this point, the phone will boot into the bootloader.
So, next time the device reboots, just start holding volume down (possibly power also, just in case) at the "off" point.
Hey people my first post so you can call me whatever you want
Here is the thing:
I rooted the phone, installed a custom ROM and such, on the process I guess I installed this Clockwork Mod Recovery v5.8.3.1.
Well I wanted to change the ROM so I downloaded the new one (lastest trickdroid) and follow the steps, BUT!, when trying to acces the fastboot thing on that menu that can't remeber the name of, I jsut can't get into it.
When I tart the phone pressing volume down + power, instead of going to that menu it goes to clockwork mod. I was suposed to "Flash the stock boot.img from the ROM with fastboot", but well I dont know what I did or wahtever, I can't aces that menu.
What should I do?

I am having what seems like the same issue with my phone. Just posted a thread not too long ago asking for help. One person (a SR. Member) informed me to try to restore using a NANDROID backup (which I dont have). Going off of his advice, if you have the backup, try that. If not, we both seem to have the same problem. Good luck with your issue, I will be checking both our threads for solutions from now on!

Extra Help (Maybe)
Hey again, I found some useful information that allowed me to get into my bootloader! If you are still stuck in CWM, use the volume down button to go down to the "advanced" button at the bottom of the list. Since this is a button that leads to another list and not a direct action, you can hold down the power button when highlighted over it and turn the phone off. From there, just hold Volume Down and Power as you would normally do to boot into the bootloader. Hope this helps since it worked for me!
So:
-Navigate to "advanced" (Just highlight over it)
-Hold power button for 10-15 seconds
-Phone should power off
-Volume Down + Power to boot into Bootloader
-Profit?? (Just Kidding )
Again, hope I could be of some assistance!

Have a look at fragkiller1 thread for fixing your issue.
well now I can't even get into CWM sigh
A brief flash of a screen appears now while booting it, but it just skips to the actual OS. I have the fast boot disabled ohh man what do now? DId I mess up something?

Ya, make sure you got the right rom and get yourself back into the bootloader and you should see recovery there then do a full wipe and flash the rom and also if you feel you might of flashed the wrong boot.img reflash it to make sure.
So it's over, all solved.
I tried to install a new ROM but CWM got me an error mounting the SD, then I installed another recovery (TWR) and installed the new ROM (viper one s) flashed the boot.img and now everthing works wonders, for now.
Thanks a lot Darknites for trying to help me I really appreaciate that

[Q] Unable to flash Lenovo A660 -> looped during factory reset -> unable to boot
Hello all!
I am having a really strange error with my phone. I can't flash it. Even when it says it's "Downloaded OK" -> green circle in Smart Phone Flash Tool, seems like nothing really happened.
The problem is, machine Lenovo A660 keeps restarting and "updating". Lenovo logo -> Android image with some weird blue shape -> restart. (5-10secs each repetition).
My Factory mode looks like this -> http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/594/img5854y.jpg/ (power on + volumne down)
This phone came with Etotalk MOD ROM.
Main problem occured, when I've couldn't access my applications -> Application not found error and lost all application icons. Then Google Play said, my account has never been used with this device. So I joined again, "re"installed applications. Some worked, but most of them kept shutting down with errors. So I decided for factory reset via software menu recovery and backup menu (??). Device started to "recovering" and it was doing for 20-30minutes - so I have restarted it.. bearing on mind, that factory reset did not work, as people stated it lasts around 7mins..
Then I have tried to flash it using various boot.img and recovery.img from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1874403 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2104748
but they won't work. Seems like something starts earlier then true recovery tool.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

I have found and use stock-modded ROM for this phone, but it really seems like Smart Phone Flash Tool is not flashing this device.
The thing is, I never see that purple bar to come.
I am using only recovery and boot image. After hitting Download I connect phone, which got battery out for few secs, and leave it as is. Red bar fills up, yellow bar fills up and that all, green circle appears.
When I start device, no change has happened. :-/
Somebody help me, please..
Btw, what is that THL and which is on my phone? Do I actually need it?
I am really stuck.

You are correct, the standard recovery will not flash the ROM. You *must* first flash a custom recovery using the windows flash utility, and after that you can flash the ROM you linked to.
Read the first two posts in this thread, and the pages it links to, especially the two 'flash' links and the A660 recovery link.

Thank you for your help! After some hard battling with some button combinations I managed to get into some "etotalk" rom recovery, which fixed partitioning (using mke2fs tool) and getting clean "old" 4.0.4 android.
Thank you again! Phone is alive!
PS: I am not sure of the combination, but I pressed & hold both volume controls and simultaneously (or few ms later) pressed power on button.

This might no longer be up to date AND I am no expert but when I was "playing" with my A660, I noticed that some (generic) descriptions for flashing, etc. refer to up- and down volume buttons, which (because they are on the right side of the device?) are in some cases mirrored to some of the instructions. In other words, up is down and down is up (if that makes sense).
If I power off the device, I usually first press volume up (and keep it pressed), while then also pressing and holding the power button.
Once the screen comes to live, you may let go of the buttons.
This combination brings me into the CWM Recovery based Recovery Mode. My phone also had the ETOTALK ROM installed ...
Navigation is with volume up / down and item selction is with the power button!
Same procedure with volume down gets you into the "factory Mode" menu, where you can do all sorts of test. However, this mode is also required for some (!) flashing procedures (ofter referred to for adb access).
Scrolling through the entries with volume down. Accepting an entry with Volume Up!
Hope this helps,
Robert

I have the same end result (after a factory reset (unintended) and unsuccesful attemts to put etotalk recovery rom back) i did a "format" from the flash tool): the phone appears dead, it will not power up. the flash tool does recognise the phone, and will download, memory test (it does say: "NAND Flash was not detected" however), etc.

using the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943442 I got the phone unbricked, so I could put the original firmware back (thanks to etotalk tech support for that tip) and then upgrade again tothe etotalk ROM.
I just received my pre-ordered One today, and I excitedly hooked it up to the computer and unlocked the bootloader. All went fine, and I re-launched the software to enable usb debugging, and disable the recovery update option that reinstalls the stock recovery (both still setup correctly). I then rebooted into the bootloader and flashed the newest 2.8.1.0 TWRP. I rebooted back into the system, then adb reboot-ed into the recovery, but it just sits at the logo forever until I hold the power button. I've tried 2.8.1.0, 2.7.1.1, and 2.7.1.0, none of them boot into the recovery. I have tried the Cannibal Open Touch recovery, and it functioned, but I really would prefer to use TWRP, anyone know what's going wrong?
Have you only tried adb rebooting? Or have you actually tried the other methods?

The vol up + pwr button has never worked for me in all my attempts (maybe once), not sure why, maybe I'm doing something wrong there. The vol down + pwr button shortcut however has been working with the temporary recovery I have installed, I've just found the adb reboot recovery to be a much easier method.

Power + volume up gets you to fastboot mode, not recovery. Power + volume down should work. The easiest method is just by using the reboot menu in Android though. You need to enable the advanced reboot menu in Developer Options, then whenever you select reboot after holding the power button you can choose from normal reboot, soft reboot, recovery, or bootloader. It should work, and it saves you from having to use adb every time.
Transmitted via Bacon
Sorry, let me rephrase what I was saying. All these methods work for getting the phone to what should be TWRP, but it never boots. It just hangs at the OnePlus logo until I force power it off. Other recoveries I've tried work, only TWRP hangs like that.

Yeah I know what the problem is, I'm just making sure you've actually tried to boot into TWRP using all methods. I was specifically asking whether you've used the advanced reboot menu because you said you've been using adb and it seems odd to be using adb instead of a much easier option. So, it's not working with the button combination, or with adb, or with the reboot menu, correct?
Transmitted via Bacon
None of the methods of getting to the recovery are working so far. I did however just re-flash the 2.8.1.0 recovery and now instead of it hanging on the logo, the logo turns blue (which looks really glitched out), and slowly fades to a black screen, which it then freezes on indefinitely like the logo. This has happened before, but I can't isolate when it freezes on the logo or this black screen, but both end up having the same effect.
Edit: Also, I attempted to fastboot boot with the twrp, and it just turned the fastboot logo blue then it slowly faded away to the same black screen which, of course, it froze on.
There have been several other people discussion this exact problem that you're describing here in the q&a section. I don't know if they every found a solution but it might be worth a bit of a search.
Transmitted via Bacon
I've encountered those posts as well, from what I could tell they all just had to settle for a CWM-based recovery. I hoped someone would be able to answer the question, but I really don't know what's wrong with it. I even factory reset to 38R from the new 44S or whatever it was, and it still wouldn't work. I guess I'll just have to settle.

It just doesn't make any sense. There must be something about the newer firmware and TWRP that just don't go together well. I'm still on 2.7.1.1 and I'm too afraid to try to update now in fear of losing TWRP altogether. I can't stand other recoveries, they're so outdated.

I could try posting on the TWRP thread and see whether anyone who knows better than us can either patch TWRP or give a solution. I hate other recoveries as well, but if I'm forced to I'll use an alternative.
NotDisliked, i have the same problem here, did you find any solution?

I've had this problem ever since I got my OPO. Today I think it was solved for me at least!
I just flashed newly released Unofficial TWRP 2.8.2.0 from katinatez. First boot after flashing it froze at the splash-screen and rebooted, but second time I booted into recovery it started working!!!
