[Q] Extract A Kernel From Stock firmware? Please help - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was hoping someone would be nice enough to tell me how to extract a kernel from a stock firmware zip/tar.md5 file. I wish to do this so I may temporarily downgrade my kernel to root my device with Towelroot.

It's already been done for you. This is the stock kernel for NE5 and this one is from NCB
Edit: NE5 is flashed from recovery, NCB is odin'd.

Thank you for the links, they are appreciated. I still would like to know how to extract kernels though as I think this would be useful to know. Im mild-moderately saavy with this stuff but this is a task i have not performed before lol

Anybody?

thx

Actually, my reply above was wrong. NE5 is flashed in custom recovery, and NCB is odin'd. Is there a reason you need to use Odin for a kernel? It's standard to just flash the .zip file from within custom recovery (Philz or TWRP).

This was an awesome link that you shared with us that I am just now seeing for the first time. I thought my topic was abandoned! Is there any chance you can tell me how to extract kernels from stock firmwares? Maybe using the method you used?

I'm not aware of a non-rooted stock KD1. I think people are trying to get one built for those that want stock Froyo.
Given that you're sending it in for a repair, I'd suggest installing the stock 2.3.6 (KJ6) as it's a Samsung official release. Once you get it back you can go back to KD1 with root.
Thank you.

Try this:
[ROM][CWM] T959VUVKD1 - Deodexed FIXED [6/9/2011]
Modems [KB5,KC1,KD1,KF1,KF2]
EDIT: You can unroot using SuperOneClick -- Though I have not tried it myself.
Here is another thread: Flashing back to KD1 with good information in it.

I didn't realize you could unroot with it. Good info; thanks
I don't think you can unroot ROMs that were made.pre-rooted by just using SOC. I tried it before on a ROM (can't remember which) and it failed.
EDIT: If you didn't flash that file for root and instead rooted it with SOC previously, you can still unroot it.
If someone could be so kind to upload a Odin Stock KD1 without root, it would help solve some of these Froyo questions

This link I posted above - [ROM][STOCK UVKD1 - FLASHABLE] T959VUVKD1 Zip File - is the same file and was taken off of the samfirmware.com website.
Samfirmware.com doesn't have the files on their site anymore. They are SamMobile.com now.

Hi broodplank1337, give you thanks for your really good job and colaboration with your kernel, ROM and info posted across threads.
I want ask you if you tried both new 4.3 leaked firmwares. Are the same? Any differences? Would be possible use new PIT file uploaded to manage those Gb loosed on a GT-i9505 International without reboots or semi-bricked status?
Thanks again! :good:

How does that make sense? i9505 has an unlockable bootloader. On my i337 I have a locked bootloader and everything has to be Loki patched but your saying even with my bootloader locked were the only users who can flash radios?

I'm just going by what is on the modems thread for the i9505. They state on their modems page that cwm zips aren't supported, only Odin fladhable. Modem flashed but baseband stays as unknown on the 337 so its unusable, unless non-hlos is needed which I'm not about to mess with.

we need non HLOS for newer modems on the i337 because we cant update our bootloaders or it patches our ability to flash roms. If we flash as is with HLOS we lose sound on the phone completely.

I'll have to leave that to the more experienced to create a zip or odin tar. I'm happy with my MF3 modem and non MF3 boot loader. Maybe my buddy @garwynn can comment on this modem deal because I don't know how non hlos works but it shouldn't prevent the baseband from showing. The sound and wifi both worked without issue, just the MF8 baseband didn't show so hlos in my experience didn't affect the sound or wifi.

From what i have seen in the zip file it is. I only don't know what that pit file is for.
Are you trying to flash it on a i9505 or i9505G ?
Yes it's the Odin version, the PIT is to repartition the device to the G table, but it's not accepted by the i9505 bootloader.
Of course im gonna flash it on the standard i9505, but i have to find a way to keep my Candy Crush savedata lol, Helium is not working that way, maybe Facebook sync?

The kernel has been changed so saferoot will not work. I'm sure there are root methods for after the update but they won't be one click root. When I get home tonight I'll make a custom tar pre rooted for people who want to be on the newest build.

So I do not confuse you, you're referring to another file that is for those of us who have an unlocked bootloader. It is the VRUCML1 modem-ONLY zip, this is something that is useless to you on 4.3 but is useful to those of us with an unlocked bootloader.
Edit: this modem-ONLY zip is roughly 20 MBs in size. Completely different thing than what ThePagel has supplied with a link. Basically, forget what you read about VRUCML1 being unavailable because the specific file is of no use to you.
ThePagel posted the Odin flashable, stock image tar that is readily available. That has always been available and will continue to be so. That 1.2+ GB tar file is to return to fresh, out of the box factory settings.

Yes, they are the same. I was simply agreeing with ThePagel. VRUCML1 and VRUCNC1 are both 4.3. You can not flash anything pre-4.3, so nothing that starts with VRA** or VRB***. Those are off limits for you.

Since you are already locked into 4.3, once you ODIN back to ML1, your only options are saferoot, safestrap, and safestrap compliant ROMs which are pretty much all the 4.3 touchwiz ROMs. You can read all about them in these threads:

NHA only, see the OP. I just updated it.
Changed back to the original instructions to get to NHA for now untill I have some more time to make or get the proper firmware for a easier upgrade.
Anyone got some success getting the NHA Kernel to boot on the Dev. Ed. S5 ?
I installed Misterxtc's zip file from the OP and it worked fine, but I notice it didn't install the NHA kernel. When manually installing the NHA Stock Kernel from here the phone do not boot (stayed on the Galaxy S5 and Padlock screen).
I tried installing the NHA modem and NON-HLOS.bin, but I got the same results.
Any ideas ?

No way to go stock after new update?

I asked in the MOAR q&a thread but realized it's a generic question that does not generally pertain to the ROM. After the new stock update Odin is useless to flash any thing because it blocks any flashing at the bootloader. Is there any way to go stock if I haven't backed up anything? I'm currently running on the new update base and have MOAR speed racer flashed. Thank you for any help
