Hi all,
My 6 days old Sensation (Vodafone contract UK) discharge a huge amount during Standby (200-350mA). I got the number via Battery Widget Pro 1.65. For the first few days I did deplete the battery fully before charging it to full. Today I have factory reset it to the original condition at around 4pm with 58% battery full. Now at 9pm, it is only 18%. During this time, I spent about 1 hour with the phone, the rest is standby. I set the widget to monitor with 1 minute interval and when looking at the log file, it can be seen that the phone consumed from 200-400mA during the standby time. Coming from HD2 with Android modded 3-8mA standby consumption, this is a huge huge dissapoinment!
Is this because of my battery or is this my phone? Should I ask for a replacement? What about you, did you see similar pattern?

Ditto!! So annoyed since I too am coming from HD2 where HyperDroid's consumption had dropped to a flat 2mA in standby. This is insane for a native android device. Not to mention the heating while playing games and most importantly, the front facing camera producing upside down image during fring video chats.. grrr!
Dunno what the cause OR solution is (besides switching over to a custom rom if and when the BL gets unlocked and people like pongster develop for this device)...
Overall, sexy device but disappointed with such major holes left unattended..
A little offtopic but was a battery related questions and did not wanna start a new thread so posting here -
Does anybody know of if there's any app which can get the battery percent to show in the top bar instead of the default indicator?

Any ideas on how I can do that? I tried using current widget but I guess because it's not rooted, current widget showed me a log of 0mA all throughout (yeah rite! hehe)
when I figure it out myself I'll let you know.
Current things I found that killed my battery over night: VTOK & Google Latitude
I went into Settings --> About Phone --> Battery --> Battery Use and checked, and it says display is eating most of my battery.
As far as mine, I get about 12 hours of battery life with standard usage, with the display eating most of the life, so if you're saying the screen is off, you might get different results...
over my 8h sleep battery dropped like 10%, nothing special (count in : wifi on, sync with gmail, weather) guys. new phone, fresh unoptimized kernel and radio. it'll get better. my prev phone (desire) was like sh*t at beginning in relating to its current spec rom ... and btw for checkin consuption : system panel (not lite), there is monitoring and u can see which apps running again if ya shoot them, check sync-s etc. many many thing to do, hard to tell in a single post

well it certainly sounds like a part of it is specimen issue.. here's my latest experience... last few times i have let it completely discharge and then charge back while the phone was off so i dont mess with it... once 100% charged, i switched the phone on and received a call.. a 25 minute conversation ate away 15% of my battery... LOL...
then, (now it gets better)... in 2 hrs of standby, the phone was at 60% which means it lost another 15% battery in 2 hrs of "standby".. im not sure if i can even call that state a "standby" anymore...
anyways... im wondering if its worth pinning hopes on rom development on our forum or should i just return this and go with something like nexus S which, O well, I can live with... atleast it has a 3300mA batterypack available... what's the use of kickass speeds and features if i have to use a phone like a desktop..
Hey, I have pretty bad battery drain during stand by as well I recommend trying to adjust the sync accounts, esp HTC hub and how often it updates that should improve it...I have a bunch of HTC widgets set up so im suspecting that being the reason for battery drain during stand by also adjust your email update setting accordingly. Every little bit helps!
Battery gauge stuck at 100%
Another one slightly off topic - but why start another battery thread.
It is the second day with my Sensation, and since I took the phone off the charger this morning, the battery gauge has been stuck at 100%. All other apps reading the battery status (e.g. Battery Widget) show the same number. I rebooted the phone multiple times, replaced the battery - nothing - permanent 100%. Has anyone had a similar experience? Did I get a perpetuum mobile ?
BTW the readings were fine yesterday.

Yes, the rating will go downhill pretty quick after that. Mine behaves in the same way.

That being said, call me crazy but it just occurs to me that HTC should be putting in some minimal efforts to check off basic quirks like battery consumption and QC. I mean all of us are spending a buttload of money on these devices year over year and then we rely on our devs here to give us basic functionality. Back in the days the reason people joined forums was to tweak devices.. Now it almost feels like we might as well expect only the hardware for the price we pay... disappointed!

I fully charged the phone before I went to bed last night. Eight hours later, the battery is at 10%. Is there something wrong with the battery?
Try using the Spare Parts app to see what's really using the battery in detail.
I recently received an Nvidia Shield and updated it right away to 4.4.2.
Today I noticed that overnight the Android OS was taking up a large portion of the battery life. The Shield's Android OS used 70% of the battery while my Nexus 4 usually only uses 12% or so.
I'm not sure if this is because it's a new install or going to be a persistent problem.
Has anyone found out why this is or have a solution to fix it?
I don't want to disable multitasking. I'm probably also not going to root the device anytime soon just in case this is a real problem and I need to RMA it. I have disabled Wi-Fi when the device sleeps.
Actually, now that I'm looking at the screenshots again, it seems the battery stats aren't reporting the other apps I was using. Maybe it all got combined into Android OS somehow? I checked my Shield again and the games and apps I was using are shown and the % of Android OS seems to be going down.
I hope this was a fluke, but it'll be a few more days before I know for sure.
It seems it might have just been a weird glitch in the way the battery stats was shown.
Today I checked my Shield and it only used 3% battery life overnight with Android OS only using 9%. All the other apps also stayed visible on the list of apps.
Last night I turned on "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" again since it's actually pretty annoying when I'm trying to download something on the Shield and it gets cancelled when it goes to sleep.
I had 30% battery life when I went to bed and the Android OS battery usage was a low 12%.
I woke up with the Shield having 30% battery life still, but the Android OS battery usage shot up from 12% to 45%.
I went out for 30min and came back and the Shield had 32% battery life.
I used it for a couple of minutes and battery life dropped to 25%.
I have no idea what the heck is going on with the battery stats. I'm probably going to see what happens tonight and if the Android OS starts to get really high again I'll then turn off "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" for a few nights to see if that's really what's causing it.

Using the stock wallpaper. I think it's just an image.
Force GPU rendering is off. All the Dev options are default.
I'm interested to know if this ever gets resolved. I'm experiencing the same thing, just a tad more extreme. Android OS taking 95% battery. Been on the wallcharger more than a day, i wake it up and its at 45% charge. Stock, non-rooted, no Dev options enabled. I have a sneaking suspicion its related to Google Play services, but have no way of knowing.

So after doing a factory reset and getting the same results I finally decided to just unlock my bootloader and root the Shield. I did contact my 3rd party insurance company first to make sure they would still cover any hardware faults if I did that.
Anyway, unlocking the bootloader meant a factory reset too. Well instead of Android OS taking up the majority % of the battery life it became Wi-Fi that was doing it.
I thought it might be the battery so I ran it down to 0% then while charging it back up I just said, "Screw it," and started fresh using the Recovery OS Image from the Nvidia site.
SO FAR, it seems to be much more normal in terms of the battery stats.
What's weird is Android OS and Android System have swapped positions compared to the way my Nexus 4 is.
It'll probably be another day or two when I use the Shield some more before I can make sure it's all better.

Not more than a week and a half ago, I did a factory reset on my Shield, for reasons unrelated. I was running into problems where the thing would randomly reboot in the middle of playing games. I attributed it to issues related to moving games to SD.
After the reset, and re-install of everything it has been running rock solid, it's only past few days this battery drain started being an issue. Last night I went through and unchecked 'show notifications' for any and all downloaded games, not sure if that makes a difference really. The thing sat on the charger an entire night, and in the morning it was still only at 52% charge, Android OS still being the top offender.
I've turned location OFF, and set WIFI to off during sleep. Going to see how the battery looks after a few more hours. If I was more adventurous I'd root, and install a wakelock detector, but I'm just not that motivated. I'm hoping if I ignore it the problem will work itself out eventually. Not sure what to think, none of my other Android tablets or phone are experiencing this phenomenon.

Setting Wi-Fi to turn off during sleep does sort of help keep Wi-Fi battery usage down, but I just find it so inconvenient.
I just rooted and have BetterBatteryStats installed. The Kernel Wakelock category doesn't show anything for some reason and nothing unusual about the Partial Wakelocks.
The only unexplained thing is a Process called migration/0 that has been on for 15h 15m 6s even though the device only shows an uptime of 13h 1m 26s. A quick Google search says, "The migration kernel process distributes workload across CPU cores. You should have one migration process per processor core." so I guess it's normal?
Also, while typing this, my Android OS battery usage shot up to 80% and my Wi-Fi is now at 10% which is still higher than the Screen on usage of 7%.
I also just used ROM Toolbox Pro to freeze all the Nvidia system apps, like NVStats and TegraZone, to see if that will help at all.
I have this feeling that it is Android 4.4.2 that is causing the problems and I hope Nvidia at the very least updates to 4.4.4.
I've been reading some more articles and there are some that point to the external SD card being the culprit of the battery drain.
It seems to be that Media Scanner is trying to constantly scan the external SD card.
I'm not 100% sure if it is the cause because on my side I don't have the Mediaserver using any battery.
The next time I fully charge my Shield I might try removing the MicroSD card to see if that is causing it.

I'm not sure removing the SD card changed anything.
I did notice a process in BetterBatteryStats called migration/0 that is very high usage and I have no idea what it is for or how to stop it.
Okay, so I think I've found the cause of the high Android OS battery usage.
First my solution:
In the Settings -> Accounts -> Google -> (your account)
Leave Sync enabled, but ONLY check "App Data", "Chrome", and "Google Photos Auto Backup". Leave everything else un-checked.
Set Wi-Fi to turn off when the Shield goes to Sleep.
*I haven't bothered to test individual sync option, but those are just the 3 I left checked. You can try it yourself to see which one is the real culprit. My best guess is it is Calendar syncing that is causing the problems.
*Do not just disable Sync. I found that did not help at all. I don't know why.
*I don't know if it's my router or the Shield, but Wi-Fi also uses way too much battery when asleep. I can see that it is going into deep sleep too. Setting Wi-Fi to turn off when the Shield goes to sleep drastically lowers the Wi-Fi battery usage. Fun fact: The Wi-Fi stays on for 20 minutes after you turn off the screen before turning itself off.
After un-checking a bunch of the syncing options my Android OS battery usage went down to 20% for a 20 hour period compared to the 70% or so it was using the day before I did it.
The "migration/0" process no longer shows up at the very top in BetterBatteryStats. If it is showing up, it is <10sec of usage.
After 20 hours, with about 35min of 3D gaming and 40min screen on time, the Android OS battery usage was using 20% with 30m30s of CPU Total. I also spent about 10min transferring files using AirDroid then moving them to the SD card.
The battery life dropped from 100% -> 84% in those 20 hours. I think I would have had battery life closer to the Anandtech review if I was just doing 1 thing consecutively and not gaming then using the Wi-Fi to move files. I might try that one day, but most likely not.
I hope this helps for everyone having the same problem as me.

I was also facing significant CPU consumption by the real time kernel process migration/0 on my Googy-Max-1.7.9 kernel.
I turned off the calendar sync and this seems to have fixed the issue. Now I am only syncing App Data, Contacts, Gmail and the others [browser, Calendar, Chrome, Chrome Beta and People details] are off.

Has anyone noticed their battery getting incredibly worse over time? I bought my S7 on release (non edge). And since then, I've noticed that it doesn't last no where near as long. Today, for example I started my day at 7:00am when the battery was 100%. As of 30 minutes ago, the battery reached critically low (5%). From 7am all I did was watch a few videos, facebook, snapchat and then play music. But all the above for not too long.
I've also noticed that once the phone hits the 15% battery (I know due to the notification), that within minutes the battery can be done to 10% or so, without touching it.
I'm more so tempted just to take it back, unless there's an easy fix OR it's a known issue with the current version.

I've definitely noticed this since rooting. Maybe it has something to do with that? Like a ROM you flashed or what not? I'd like some suggestions here as well.

I haven't rooted the S7, it was the first phone that I've left stock from opening.
What does the battery stats say is using the most mAh?
Facebook app is a known battery hog
Obviously over time, you'll install different things, and slowly the phone will start using more and more power running background apps
A backup and Factory reset will show if there is a hardware / battery issue, or if it's purely from stuff you've installed over time
Also clearing the caches from recovery could help
yeah ive noticed this too. My usage habits havent changed but my battery life is almost half of what it was when i just got the phone.

Cache has been cleared from recovery, and I don't generally install many apps so since I've bought the phone the apps have stayed the same.
Android system is always on top. Unless of course I spend hours on Facebook.
Might have to factory reset. I've used my phone with the same apps and time since I've bought it, and I'm finding I'm charging it 3x as much.
I think it's a root issue - deep sleep.
After S6 Edge Plus, when you root a samsung phone, it won't go in deep sleep. I believe there's a fix for that.
Have you checked the battery usage stats? It gives you the breakdown on what apps are eating up the battery.
I have had my S7 for about a month and battery is about the same.
Just to update this thread for those that may have a similar issue...the other day I couldn't live with the battery life the way it was. The phone used 50% in several hours where I barely used it.
Decided to completely re-flash with stock (was stock before) as opposed to simply wiping all data. A week in, and the phone's battery life is back to the way it was. I went to bed when it was on 100% (as a test) and woke up 7 hours later with the phone on 94%, with wifi, location and bluetooth on.
Not sure what had caused it to use so much battery previously, but it's back to what it should be and that's all that matters.

Rooting and installing custom kernels when done right should greatly increase the battery life of your device. This is a well known guide here on XDA for improving battery life for our devices.
That being said, Lithium Ion Batteries hold less charge the more cycles they are put through, its a given fact but as you said your device is relatively new and therefore should not be experiencing this kind of problem. The way I see this is there are 3 possibilities which may be causing the said problem...
1) You have rooted the device and done some modification/s. ( which you haven't done )
2) Your battery is being drained by a service ( Like Oculus or VR ) in fact a number of reddit users complained their S7 was overheating and battery was draining really fast for some reason. Check This page out, It might help you.
3) Battery Defect, you must've gotten a "bad" model, if you haven't tripped KNOX you could try bringing your phone to Samsung and see if they would fix or replace it.

I think this has to due to them samsung updates. As far as i know samsung been always doing things like this where they made the OS slow as hell after a while so you gonna get a upgrade sooner but a battery should last 2 years minimal without degrading.

i get like 5 hours screen on time and bout 1 day standby time but i have most bloatware disabled with the package disabler. But if i was you i would contact samsung.
This happens with Samsung updates on every Galaxy phone. It's like a curse. It's unavoidable.

May i ask if the people with these problems use the fast charge? I hearing many bad things bout this so i switched it off and must say the normal charge isn't that slow and if it can keep the battery good for longer then we all should use this.
I turned fast charge off about a week after I got the phone, was making the phone and charger pretty hot for the sake of about 5-10 mins quicker charge
Pointless really, unless you are desperate, only have a few mins spare and need as much power as possible in that short time, and if that's the case, enable it for that one time
Restrict background data on all but the most important apps (phone, text, email), dave power all but the most important apps. Battery life is fine

All of a sudden my battery started draining rapidly. See the attached screenshots for ref. I thought maybe it was a software bug since it started happening 2 days ago. I tried booting into the safe mode and the fast drain didn't stop. I also did hard reset with same result. At this point I'm thinking about getting new battery. Just wanna see if xda community has any tips if maybe I've missed something. It's just strange that this sudden degradation happened overnight.
Obviously, that draining is not normal.
In the upper left corner there is a warning that some app is running in background.
When you did the hard reset also you did a restore from some backup? Is the device warm/hot?
Sometimes it shows carrier utility or people apps running in the background. I restored from Google backup (forgot to mention in the OP). Device isn't hot at all.
i stared clean with LeeDroid ROM (had original Sprint ROM on) after wiping the data and the fast battery drain remains. at this point i'm going to replace the batter since it's not a software issue.
I'd definitely say your battery has shat itself. I'd also try something like gsam or battery info in *#*#4636#*#* to see the health of your battery. I'd be interested to know if it reports it as "good" health
It's strange but the standby seems to be better now whereas it was going fast before. Thought maybe it 'fixed' itself, however during a phone call (4min) I lost %3. That's definitely not normal 4636 is not showing any battery info. Can't find anything in gsam showing health status of the battery. Is it in pro?
If the battery drains fast during calls can be due to poor/weak network reception (the modem tries to maintain the best quality and scans the network over and over).
3 sot with 50% (or little more) battery left is a good value, in my opinion.
Oh, when recoveries are made due to some problem is better to not restore from backups. In that backup can be the app or setting that is causing the problem.
Anyway, with the last google play services (14.7.99) I also have noticed a bit more drain during standby.

I have about the same issue. The battery is draining too fast and it's very noticeable when idle, even when idle in safe mode + airplane mode it loose 20% during an 7 to 8h night. I tried all htc nougat and oreo official and unofficial roms and nothing fixed the problem.
I also used the htc diagnostic tool to determine whether my battery is "good" or not and..... according to the diagnostic tool it is "good". Notice that according to diagnostic tool the battery is defective only if it goes from 100 to less than 75% during the test. Mine goes from 100 to 93 during the test which consists in showing a kind of dark grey screen at full brightness during 1 hour.
Even with a battery rated as good I decided to sent my device for repair because it was not good.
I received the device back and it has not been repaired because it passes the diagnosric tool test. test.
So i'll replace the battery myself as soon as i'll receive my new battery.
I suggest you to run the diagnostic tool test and if you get a decrease from 100 to less than 75, they should repair it under warranty, if not, suggest you to replace the battery yourself or pay somebody to do it for you.

I already ordered the battery and will do the replacement myself if the wait times are similar to those of screen replacements. Plus everything points to a bad battery so another test with official app is pointless. Sounds like we both will be doing the swap ourselves.
So I put new battery in and the drain seems slower than before and the charging is not erratic (jumping). When I was removing back cover the black layer came off so I figured it'd be good time to try clear cover mod . I like the look but unsure if anything will interfere with the radios and such due to the missing protection.
Hello all, so the original battery on my Google pixel, almost 3 years old, went to complete hell. It turns off in about a minute once unplugged, despite 100% battery life. So I went and replaced it with two Amazon bought batteries. The first one (definitely not OEM) had the same issue but my pixel would at least last about 10 minutes of regular use, unplugged, before shutting down. So I thought it might be the battery but the second one has the exact same issue. The second one at least looked like OEM with the exterior but since it came from Amazon, it's not 100% certain.
The problem is that the phone charges very fast, like 100% in less than 15 minutes and then discharges 10-20% in just a few minutes. If I last below 70% that would be out of the ordinary.
Is it possible that it's not a battery issue but maybe a different issue? A friendly person on another forum suggested that my core or graphics IC is overheating, attempting to throttle down; and then just shutting down when it looses the battle. Which makes absolute sense since the phone mostly shuts down when I'm playing games on my phone and usually turns off just under 80%.
I also found out that a recent google play store version was found to be the culprit for the extensive battery loss for other folks. Could this also be reason?
Are there any tests I could do to further determine the actual cause?

Two ideas:
- Deactivate Play Store app in Settings -> Apps & Notifications -> All -> Play Store -> Deactivate
- To rule out a damaged third party app as a cause for the battery drain (which actually is quite unlikely in your case), you can reboot into safe mode. For that, long-press the power button and then long-press 'shut down', confirm with OK. At the reboot, all non-system apps are freezed. Then you can check if the battery behaves differently.
Did you try charging your phone for about two hours longer, even if it says it is already at 100%? Maybe just the battery percentage measurement system is somehow damaged.
But you already tried that I guess. So maybe somebody else got another tip for you.
do you try flashing stock image? maybe the battery cache is in trouble
Similar to OP, my Pixel XL had started to have some odd issues beginning almost a year ago. It got REALLY bad in just the last six weeks or so when it would shut down at relatively respectable battery percentages (something like 23% - 57%, randomly).
- Deactivate Play Store app in Settings -> Apps & Notifications -> All -> Play Store -> Deactivate
- To rule out a damaged third party app as a cause for the battery drain (which actually is quite unlikely in your case), you can reboot into safe mode. When I deactivated ("Disabled" in my settings), there was no change in behavior. In fact, I had forgot I did that until giving things about a week and had forgotten when the phone behaved the same way, LOL (I just now re-enabled it).
I also tried the Safe Mode (which I had not previously known about - thanks!), and the phone still died out pretty quickly from a "full" charge.
Did you try charging your phone for about two hours longer, even if it says it is already at 100%? Maybe just the battery percentage measurement system is somehow damaged.

I had also done this several times. The really odd thing is many times I will have it on the charger all night or for several hours, and when I take it off it is only at a very low percentage - from 1% to 16%. !!! Of course more often than not it does get to a higher percentage.

Thanks, gonzakennyn - I have not done a "stock" image, but have factory reset the phone, with no joy. This was actually one of the things I did months ago even before it got really bad, because I wondered if maybe the battery cache or something at the kernel level had deeper issues.
Hopefully the OP might have had better luck or found something...
All these complaints sound like power supply issues.
Use the phone while it's in the charger, and there's no overheating/throttling/shutdown, right?

Unfortunately, I did not find a solution. After replacing the battery twice I pretty much resigned to my fate. I'm going to hold out until Pixel 4 comes out.
Once fully charged, I could use my phone for browsing or watching videos for about an hour before I get to around 30-40%. Then I could leave it unplugged all night and wake up to my battery at 1%. It actually stays that way for a bit.
However, if I use my phone to play any games, I could only use it unplugged for about 10 minutes. My phone will power down without fail at 80% or below only when I play games. Weird thing is, whenever I power it back up, my phone will be 1% but despite that it could last quite a while.
As post-mortem mentioned, I could use my phone while charging without issues so maybe it is a power supply issue, in which case, I have no idea what I could do.
When it's not plugged in to a charger, the only power supply is the battery. Hence, I feel that even your "new" battery is not new.
So a little update all. I updated my phone to the latest Android 10 patch and the battery life has gotten significantly better. It's still not enough to last all day but it can last probably 6-8 hours with minimal use. If I use it constantly, it might last two hours.
I am no longer tethered to my charger when playing games, which is really good news and all the prior issues with the phone shutting down ~80% is gone.
Perhaps the previous Android patches contained faulty code?
I would do fresh install and see if problem resolves. Fresh install fixes all sorts of software issues.
So my battery woes aren't as bad as yours but I did get to the point where I had the battery replaced. I went to uBreakiFix and I have no idea what battery they put in but the bottom line is a brand new battery didn't help much. I got a little better battery life but not as much as I had hoped. I'm assuming that it's either due to the apps I have installed and my usage or the phone is getting old and something is drawing a little more power than it used to. I have not gone to the trouble of factory resetting to see if that would help yet.

Factory resets didn't help my old issue. Updating to the latest Android os helped immensely. As stated above I no longer have the initial issues. I estimate I now have about 70-80% capacity, which is not bad at all considering I bought my battery through Amazon for around $20.
I thought if you got your battery replaced at ubreakifix, then they are obligated to fix your issue or refund you your money.
