T-Mobile WiFi Calling - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My WiFi calling is not working on my Z3. Since I have that feature turned ON, an error message is indicated right underneath the label where you turn it ON or OFF. I can't remember the exact message since it only seems to happen at work. While connected to the WiFi at work, I have no problem with connecting to the internet. Anyone else having the same issue?

Maybe it has something to do with SIP ALG or Firewall settings on the router? On some routers it causes issues. I have no such issues though.
Better explanation about SIP ALG and VoIP:

I didn't have any problem with WiFi calling at work when I had my LG G2 though....

[Q] Wifi Calling Issues

I am having an issue with wifi calling on a my One S. For background info I am using a completely stock rom, I am rooted and I have only removed non t-mobile related apps like where's my water and movie editor.
My issue is this, I have wifi calling disabled in settings and yet every time I connect to a wifi hotspot whether at home or anywhere else it attempts to use wifi calling. when it does this I lose all cellular signal and can no longer receive/send calls and texts. I have tried factory resetting the phone as well as calling t-mobile. I was on the phone with them for about 2 hours or so last night and still no fix. Just curious as to what I should do to fix this issue or would it be easier to just get an exchange on the phone.
I have also tried setting up wifi calling but at the same time I would prefer to use my phone connection for calls due to irregularity in hotspots i connect to, hence the reason I have it disabled altogether.
Any help is appreciated
Try setting wifi calling to cellular preferred
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
Yeah that doesnt seem to help either. I am just about to take phone back and try another. I hate not being able to use my phone my WiFi. No matter what setting I use I can't seem to send or receive any calls or texts. The instant my WiFi connects I get a big X on my cell signal indicator.

This problem is stupid but is easy to fix. Whenever you finished using wifi calling feature, the phone's radio is auto-turn off. That why you can't call or send text message. Open dialer pad, type *#*#4636#*#* ==> phone information => turn on radio. I believe this is a bug because i never have this problem before when i used htc sensation, mytouch 4g

Wifi Connection Problem

Hello All,
I am trying to connect to my work network with no luck! Prior to the one plus one I had a Nexus 5 that connected with no issues. This is what happens:
1. Choose connect (password is saved)
2.The text under the SSID goes from "connecting" back to "saved" in less than a second. The signal bars show 3 then drop to 1.
I've tried forgetting the network, flashing different ROM, kernel, modem with no luck.
Turned off "Avoid poor network connections" and "Wi-Fi optimization:
With the Wifi analyzer app the connection is steady around -60 to -50 dBm. If I try to connect using the wifi analyzer app it just stays on "Authenticating". I know the password is correct, I've re-entered it multiple times.
The wifi network is using the 2.5 ghz band, channel 1, and WPA authentication.
I haven't tried connecting with a static IP, however I might try this next.
Any ideas, this is driving me nuts! Plus all the iPhones around me get to brag!
Thanks in advanced.
I'm having the same problem, and it also seems to stumble connecting to data networks. I have been toggling airplane mode on/off and it then finds the wifi and data networks. This is annoying as hell, when it should auto find and lock any network it has remembered and passwords are correct.
Does anybody have a fix, or is there a radio that can be flashed to correct this?

I'd love to hear any resolutions to this issue as well... I posted this in the oneplus forums recently:
"I am having this problem too with my mom and dad's OPO . But what's funny is that it doesn't happen to my OPO. This sort of rules out any WiFi/router/network issues. Is it possible that certain installed apps on their phones may render the wifi to be unstable (e.g. permission settings for these apps?) Any help from the community is appreciated, thanks... this is an annoying problem for them as it drains out their LTE data!"

Can't activate wifi calling on rooted phone?

I have a google Pixel on Android 7.1.2 on Verizon. I've had wifi calling activated the whole time that I've had the Pixel, on various cell providers, until yesterday. Decided to root my phone to be able to use "Radio Control", an app that will put the phone into Airplane mode when connected to wifi. Did that yesterday, and since then I've not been able to activate wifi calling. My phone is stock other than being rooted...I tried the Radio Control app, and it worked as it should. I've just removed it again, until I can get wifi calling activated. Oh, by the way, rooted by unlocking the bootloader, putting TWRP recovery on the phone, and then installing SuperSu via TWRP.
I've tried:
-Flushing app caches in "Storage", and flushing the phone app cache.
-Having "My Verizon" app on the phone.
-Resetting network settings.
-Activating with and without being in Airplane mode, always with wifi connected, though.
-Removing and restoring "Advanced Calling" setting.
The only thing I haven't tried is that one with the live chicken, a pentagram, and incense. That's my next thing to try.
Any suggestions? I'm really amazed that I can't activate wifi, since Verizon suggests this to stabilize wifi calling for their customers. I guess that they've never actually tried it themselves. Does anyone have wifi calling activated on a rooted Pixel? Do you remember doing anything in particular to get wifi activated, other than trying repeatedly to turn it on in the phone's settings?
By the way, the reason that wifi calling doesn't seem to work well on Verizon isn't wifi calling functionality, wifi calling itself works fine. It's because Verizon only allows the setting "Cellular preferred" for wifi calling. You cannot set "Wifi preferred" for wifi calling. This means that the cell radio is busy nearly all the time in a low cell signal area (like my house), working to make the cell signal usable. I noticed that there was much less battery drain while I was testing "Radio Control" since the phone was in Airplane mode, but I didn't have wifi calling activated at that point. Wifi was connected (of course), but wifi calling was not activated.
I hope that this is all clear, and that someone out there might remember something helpful for me. Or at least be able to tell me that wifi calling can or can't be activated on a rooted phone. If I can't root and get wifi calling activated, I'm going to sell the Pixel, as it doesn't meet my needs. I also have an iPhone that works perfectly with wifi calling on Verizon, but I'd much rather be using the Pixel.
Thanks!
I'm on Verizon and had that happen and found it was because of the theme i was using. Just had to reapply the theme to settings and all fixed. Also, I just checked the settings and you can set it to WiFi preferred.

Sounds good, just a couple of questions. First, which theme? Where do you access the particular theme in settings that you're referring to? The only theme that I've changed from default is the keyboard theme.
The other question is how can you change the wifi calling setting to WiFi preferred? Do you click on the wifi calling setting that has "Cellular preferred", and a menu comes up that includes "WiFi preferred"? I don't get that menu when I click on that setting, all I get is a setting for "roaming", and for 911 address, nothing else.
Also, which Android build are you on? I'm on Android 7.1.2, build NHG47K. Are you on that build? Or maybe N2G47E? I was wondering about that.
I'm on the 7.1.2 K build with a downloaded theme-not in settings. I think you have to set up the emergency address for wifi calling to work. And yes it's roaming preferences where you can change to WiFi preferred.
Just did a factory reset to try removing root and then activating wifi calling unrooted. Then add root again and see if wifi calling sticks or goes away....
So I'm currently unrooted and am not able to activate wifi calling. Sounds like time for a call to Verizon...Should be able to activate wifi calling with stock ROM. Have done this one before *smile*.
Things are not going well...looks like the Pixel may be heading out the door, too much time spent for no results.

Did you update emergency address? That's has to be set up for wifi calling to work. https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-208085/
Any other tips to get wifi calling enable? Whenever I click enable, it just goes to a generic error message and then nothing. So I can't even get to the screen to enter an emergency address. I have a ticket open with Verizon, but since I have an unlocked bootloader, I don't want to do a warranty exchange.
The rest of the story, used iPhone 6S Plus for a couple of months so that I could use wifi calling at home, and sold the Pixel. I did get very tired of the iPhone, even though wifi calling works perfectly on the iPhone on Verizon. So I got the new Verizon 4G/LTE Network Extender so I wouldn't need wifi calling here at home. That's allowed me to get another Pixel phone and use it at home without relying on wifi calling, now have 4/5 bars of cellular signal strength throughout my house. The Network Extender is a really nice piece of hardware, a great upgrade for the old 3G model that had no way to tell what was going on. The new 4G/LTE model has a web admin GUI page that has all kinds of useful status information on it. As well as a one-line display that shows each step in the startup sequence as it comes up.
The new Pixel works just as the old one with wifi calling on Verizon. "Cellular preferred" is the only setting available for wifi calling. Which means that if there's a low cell signal it will generally be used in preference to a strong wifi signal. Don't know why Verizon insists on this setting, I guess that they really don't want to support reliable wifi calling on the Pixel. I've thought about rooting my phone again to see if can get wifi calling working reliably, but now that the Pixel is able to use wifi calling and I don't need wifi calling at home, I'm inclined to leave it alone. In other words, getting wifi calling working perfectly isn't a good enough reason for me to root my phone *smile*. I can root it in the future if I have a good enough reason.
So the bottom line is that I'm pretty happy with the Pixel now, works as I need it to...just tried the Android O Beta, and liked what I saw there. Really glad that I'm back on Android.
Update: found an article here about how to change calling setting to "Wi-Fi preferred" for Pixel on Verizon...tried it and worked for me:

Wifi Calling Not Working on OnePlus 6 on T-Mobile?

Hey everyone,
Is anyone else having problems with wifi calling (or even sending SMS on wifi for that matter) with the OnePlus 6 on T-Mobile?
I have no cell network coverage in a lot of areas where I travel so wifi calling is a necessity. I have my SIM settings set for wifi calling enabled but whenever I am on wifi only, I get the following message whenever I try to place a call: "Mobile network is not available. Connect to a wireless network to make a call". I also get a similar message when trying to send a text message.
I have tried switching SIM slots as well as clearing the cache as others have suggested in the past but to no avail. Does anyone else on T-Mobile have wifi calling working? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
I don't know. My WiFi calling is working fine. I just tested it just before commenting.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone.
It does not. Am I supposed to have it whenever I am connected to wifi or when I am making the call? Either way, I don't get the icon in the status bar.
Not sure if this helps or not, but when I am on wifi and without cell service, my SIM card name only shows SIM 1. When I am back on network, it shows T-Mobile.
Any idea where to go from here?
I have attached 3 screen shots showing the WiFi Calling label at the top left and the WiFi Calling icon at the top right. In the notification drawer you will also see it says "Ongoing WiFi Call". The 2nd image shows an incoming WiFi Call before I answer the call. The 3rd image shows the phone screen during the call. The interesting thing here is that it doesn't say WiFi Call but rather HD, which usually indicates to me it's a cellular call. I would expect the screen to state "WiFi Call" here or the WiFi symbol. In fact, on my 5t it did show this so not sure if this is an issue or not.
Maybe someone else can chime in regarding what happens when they receive and connect to a WiFi call.
I am having the same problems as OP. With wifi calling enabled and no signal I get the message to connect to a wireless network to make a call.
Tried restarting phone with wifi calling enabled and disabled, swapping sim card slot, resetting cache, no luck. It is like wifi calling isn't turning on, even though the slider says it should be enabled.
My next step is to factory reset phone and see if that fixes it, but if anyone has a suggestion to try beforehand i would appreciate it!
Thanks
Wifi calling is so overrated I quit using. The only reason to use if you don't have a good reception, otherwise don't.

Are you seeing any of the WiFi calling labels/icons? I just tested my phone by turning on Airplane Mode and enabled WiFi to test WiFi Calling. I was able to make a call via WiFi Calling while Airplane Mode was enabled.
Turn off airplane mode to make a call. Trying to attach screen shot but getting errors.
I forgot to mention, WiFi calling was working fine before for me. I'm not sure when it stopped working (maybe the last system update?) Sometime this week though.

I am not seeing any of the wifi calling labels/icons either.
Question - is anyone that is having WiFi Calling issues running a custom kernel that is blocking wakelocks?

Are you using a custom kernel?
I just tried it and it worked. The only thing I noticed is I had to turn my WIFI back on after turning airplane mode on. After turning WIFI back on I was able to make a call no issues with airplane mode still on.
So I've had this issue since day one, stock phone. It was persistent on OOS 5.1.5 and 5.1.6. VoLTE works, but VoWiFi/WiFi Calling will not.
I've got it enabled on my T-Mobile line so not really sure what the issue is. I've heard it can depend on the router, with Comcast Routers not outputting IPv4 or something on wireless, but I have confirmed I have IPv4 addresses at home so not sure what else it could be.

Well that could be a problem. I won't give money away for free with renting modems and routers, and usually crappy ones at that. I always but my own routers and modems.
Before this thread was posted, I have thought that there were issues with WiFi Calling. There are times that the phone says WiFi calling is active, however, based upon the call quality, I can tell that it's not. I never had this issue with my 5t. At one point, after a poor quality call, while I was supposed to be on WiFi calling, I put the phone in airplane mode and turned on WiFi. I did this experiment earlier and was able to make a call via WiFi calling, however this time, I got the error about not having a cellular connection - don't remember the exact message. Something is definitely up with WiFi Calling!
I attempted to contact OnePlus Support about it and just as I expected, pretty much got no where with them.

Darn, sounds like it's not working for almost all of us. Do you think it might've been broken with the updates?
On 5.1.8 and Wi-Fi calling is working perfectly fine on t-mobile. Could make a call on Wi-Fi with airplane mode on
Hey everyone,
Solved! (Highlights in bold).
I have great news and just wanted to give an update on this to close the thread. I went to a T-Mobile store yesterday and had them switch out the SIM card (which they did for free btw). On startup, lo and behold, the VoWifi icon came up along with a banner at the top indicating "T-Mobile Wi-fi Calling"! So it appears the problem was either a defective SIM card (or the original T-Mobile store set it up incorrectly) which apparently is not that uncommon. VoLTE also appears when not on wifi which it had not before.
I'm not sure if this is related or not, but just for full transparency in case it provides a clue for anyone else: I had my number ported from Sprint and, while calls to/from my phone showed up correctly in caller ID with the ported number, my phone itself (found under Settings > About Phone > Status > SIM status) showed the original T-Mobile assigned number.
In short, to anyone else having this problem on T-Mobile, after confirming the SIM settings are set correctly (i.e. set for Wi-Fi calling), it might be worth swapping out the SIM card for a new one.
I also want to give credit to OnePlus for the effort on their end. They took the complaint very seriously and as soon as I had filed a bug report, a developer at OnePlus had contacted me requesting the wifi logs for analysis.
I was also impressed with T-Mobile's support which, while they didn't know exactly what was going on, they were able to confirm internally that OnePlus 6 works with wifi calling on T-Mobile. They even scheduled a call and called me back when I had to interrupt our call to run to a meeting.
Thanks again everyone!

It seems to be very intermittent. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't - all the while stating with label and icon that WiFi Calling is active. I was actually on a plane over the weekend, with Airplane mode on and using WiFi when I actually got a phone call. I was able to connect - although not the best quality phone call. Not sure what to think any more.
Any updates on this? I love my OP5T, but I couldn't resist the OP6. I guess I just assumed wifi calling would work like it does on the OP5T.

Question Wifi calling problem

Hi.
I get wifi calling working fine on my phone, but it just disappears and stops working after a few hours. Rebooting makes it work again.
Anyone else have this problem?

Are you sure it's failing and what do you mean 'stops working'?
Do you try to place a call and it fails because WiFi calling is broken?
Or are you just watching the carrier name change off of WiFi calling? Because your phone will move off of WiFi calling if the signal strength is low enough and the strength of the cellular signal is higher.
The preference switch just dictates which to favor first over the other, it doesn't lock you to WiFi calling only.
Try walking closer to an access point and checking if WiFi calling comes back, that's what it does for me I move from outside with a weak WiFi signal to inside with a strong signal.
If that's the case then you'll need more access points in your house.

Where I am right now there is no cellular (offshore). I can also recreate the problem if I turn flight mode on and off. After I do that I can't do wifi call (the icon/text is gone and calls and texts are not working anymore). Kinda weird behavior tbh. It might be the wifi, but it was stable on my last phone. I can wait till I get home and try that wifi, but it's only here at work I need it

Try disabling MAC address randomization for the access point you are on, it defaults to enabled. It can cause issues if the DHCP lease time is low and your phone gets on and off the network, making it show up as a new device each time.
If it still is having issues then it might just be the network, a grocery store near me has filters and when you get on their guest WiFi you can place a call for a couple seconds before it kills the connection.

Disabling the MAC address randomization did the trick. Been on and stable since I turned it off. Thanks again
A new problem have emerged in this same topic.
Using the same phone, same sim, same wifi, same settings (disabled mac address randomization) the wifi calling won't activate at all now. Any idea what I can do to trouble shoot? Wifi calling is turned on and set to preffered.
