[Q] Lollipop wifi tethering issue - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I did a search and I mostly found T-Mobile users getting blocked from tethering.
However, I'm on Telus in Canada so I don't think I'm facing the same type of block since tethering worked on KitKat.
All that happens when I try to enable tethering is that it says "Turning hotspot on.. " for a second and then it shuts off and says "Error". I am then no longer able to even toggle tethering until I reboot the phone.
I am on Cataclysm, stock radio, and stock kernel.
Thanks

[Q] LG Optimus 3D Hotspot WiFi sharing error / Tethering

Friends I did not think to try it with the original ROM, but it occurred to me to try Ginerbread 2.3.5 V21A after installing the original ROM. I open the hotspot access point, the notification area "hotspot access point enabled" message came, shortly after the activation of the menu box switches itself off and closed, the bottom line, the only "error" message I see. Is it a software problem? Does anyone know the solution?

I get this a lot too. But a boot resolves the problem. So something else makes it stop. I haven't figured out what.
I'm on V21a, seeing as tethering is mentioned, in order to get tethering working, you need to turn off wifi, then tethering works fine.

[Q] Xoom 3G - Wifi not working after ICS Update

Has anyone else experienced this? The update downloaded and installed just fine. All apps seem to run fine, just cannot connect to my wifi network. In fact it doesn't seem to even see any networks.
I did not have my device activated for a Verizon Data Plan, and when I try and go through the "Activate Device" process that fails as well.
Thanks

Which update did you apply, was it an OTA update or one you found someplace else either on XDA or grabbed from the web?
As far as I know the only working update for a 3g Xoom is going out OTA to testers, and no one has grabbed a link for the zip install, so what did you install?

I installed the OTA using the trick to stop Google Framework Services and force the update check.
Before I have you go and do a whole bunch of crazy stuff, let me ask the simple question...have you rebooted your tablet and tried WiFi again?
Also, just so I understand the exact problem, is it that WiFi won't turn on, or is it that it does turn on but just doesn't find any WiFi networks?
Seems okay here. Unrooted and relocked and manually applied updates one by one.

It's that it doesn't find any networks.
EDIT: works now, for some reason after the update wifi was set to 5GHz only and couldn't find any networks. Setting it to Auto resolves the issue. Strangely also the Verizon 3g works now as well.
Thanks for the responses.
wifi not working after Jelly Bean update
My Xoom tablet (Wi-Fi only) just got an OTA update to Jelly Bean.
The Wi-Fi network has stopped working. The network is found and shows as "saved". If I tell the tablet to forget the connection, it will re-save it but it will not process the "connect" command. I am trying to connect to an open hotel network while on business travel. I was connected to this network during the upgrade but now I can't reconnect. I've rebooted and it doesn't do anything different.
Also, when the tablet boots, it still displays the ICS splash screens but after it boots, it has all the new Jelly Bean features.
I am currently unable to use the tablet at all for networking since it does not have any cellular capability.
What now????
=========
UPDATE: After sitting with Wi-Fi turned off and sleeping for about 20 minutes, the Wi-Fi now is working. I didn't touch anything. Previously, it wouldn't load the network and I rebooted it at least 4 times. Weird. but now it's working so I'm happy...

Wifi Hotspot doesn't work, Stock 5.1

Good day everyone,
I looked through the internet and couldn't find any relevant post that would be remotely close to my issue, hence creating this thread now. I do apologize if I missed something.
Per section, I have Nexus 5 16GB White model. I recently used google factory images to completely wipe my device and upgrade to the new Android 5.1. I had no errors and everything went smoothly and my Nexus 5 now runs stock Android 5.1 with Franco Kernel. Yesterday I was able to use my phone as Wifi Hotspot but as of today it suddenly stopped working. When I press a quick toggle for Hotspot, I can see the icon activated and the icon in the status bar but there is no Notification saying that the Hotspot is activated, and none of my devices (Laptop and Nexus 9) can see the hotspot.
What I tried:
Obvious, rebooting the device
Removing and putting back in Sim Card
Flashing stock kernel
I do not use any mods whatsoever except the aforementioned kernel which prior to Android 5.1 clean flash has never affected wifi Tethering.
I live in Finland currently and there is no carrier restrictions on tethering.
I would try flashing stock image once again but would like to avoid unless it's a last resort.
Thank you for your time.
Mine works OK. Use it instead of wifi as I've unlimited 4g data and single. I depend on the hotspot working.

Infuse 4G and mobile hotspot hangup

Hi
I am using GB 2.3.6 custom stock. At first I was using just the factory downloaded version of 2.3.6. With either one, I have been having an issue with the hotspot. It works for about an hour. Then there seems to be a data hangup. I check the phone and it looks fine. Great data connection it seems. So I try turning off the "mobile AP" hotspot, and it shows "error". No problem. I put the phone into Flight Mode and then back again. Data connection reconnects. Then the hotspot will turn back on. An hour later, I get the same hangup and have to do this all over again.
I don't know if this has something to do with 2.3.6 GB. But I recently had a CarbonRom 4.2.2 installed and hated it. But the hotspot worked constantly. Never had to reset it. I personally like the GB 2.3.6 and wouldn't mind upgrading to something very similar to it if it would solve this hotspot problem.
Any ideas how to fix this?

I guess, if it is a problem with Gingerbread (or at least with one of their system apps), not much one can do.
Since you tried the AOSP thing and hated it, only thing I can suggest is a third party hotspot app. I don't use hotspot, so I don't have any recommendations (my mobile data quota is too low ), however Google Play can probably help with that.
Btw, this thread patches a separate problem with tethering in Gingerbread (how the packets are routed with your carrier in case you have a separate/unlimited tethering plan).
Hope this helps.

Unable to activate Wifi calling on rooted carrier unlocked Pixel 2 on Verizon Network

Hello,
I have a carrier unlocked Pixel 2 walleye that is rooted (magisk, no custom recovery) and on Verizon
android version 8.1.0
build #OPM1.171019.021
when I try to activate wifi calling, i get the spinning circle for a long time, and then it finally says "unable to activate wi-fi calling. please try again later"
I have HD voice activated on my verizon wireless account.
I tried the VoEnabler module in Magisk
Wifi calling is turned on in the phone info screen (*#*#4636#*#*)
The only thing i guess i haven't tried is installing a Verizon ROM instead of the stock Google ROM.
Before I went that route, I wanted to check here and see if anyone else was able to get it to work for them.
Thanks in advance.
ok so i had this issue twice on the same phone and i am rooted as well. i think the only way to get it to work is to disable root, activate wifi calling, then reactivate root.
I have enabled this feature while rooted on 2 different PIxel 2's.
This sounds silly but turn off wifi and try to activate it. I've been unable to input my address during the activation process multiple times unless I am on cellular.
thanks for the suggestions everyone. with wifi turned off, it still won't work. I'll try the unroot path next time there is a new system update. It's not a critical need at the moment, but it is rather annoying that i can't activate it.

I don't think your problem is related to root unless it's a Magisk module of some kind that's the problem. I'm on Verizon, rooted with Magisk. I haven't had wireless calling turned on but after seeing your post I thought I'd check and see if it works on mine. It connected without any problems for me.
Did you ever figure this out?

I'm having a similar issue, except that I can enable wifi calling but always get the "Turn off airplane mode or connect to a wireless network" message when attempting to place a wifi call. Everything with regard to wifi calling is set up correctly. I thought I had this narrowed down to Oreo version and patch level, but I honestly can't come up with a repeatable scenario that breaks it. About all I can say for sure is it seems like when I flash back to bone stock, OPM1.171019.021, wifi calling works as expected. However, it seems to break after a while, even without applying any updates. My gut says it's related to root, but I've also seen it work with root. I also have a suspicion it has something to do with the type of authentication on the wifi network, as the first time I ever saw wifi calling work was when I connected to an open SSID. The problem is, right after that, it worked fine on a WPA2 network on which it never worked before. This is on Verizon with a Pixel 2 from the Google Store. I have a hard time believing it's a Verizon issue, though. It's more like the phone does a check for wifi connectivity and returns "false" for some reason.
*** I should add all my testing has been done by turning on airplane mode (thus disabling LTE/3G) and then enabling wifi. My office at work has horrendous cell coverage, but I haven't gotten it down to zero bars without airplane mode to see if it works then.
