Nexus 5 - No service....help please - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok this is a weird one.
Phone was working ok yesterday throughout the day. In the evening I noticed I had no signal so I rebooted the phone but still nothing.
Checked my operators (O2) website and it said there was a fault with my local mast. Ok I thought...should be ok tomorrow.
Woke up in the morning, still no signal. Mast still showing a fault. So I travelled to work 6 miles away, but still nothing. My local mast in now working again, as is the one near my work, but still can't get any service.
Factory reset to no avail. Tried another sim card of a friends in my phone but still nothing. If I try to search operators it brings back the usual UK list, but if I try to register on the network I get 'Currently unavailable. Please try again later' (or words to that affect).
Im starting to think it's the radio in my phone. It's just strange that it coincided with the fault on my local mast.
I also have the issue that I slightly cracked my screen about 2 month ago, so now I apparently have voided the warranty on the phone despite it being less than 6 months old.
Anyone have any suggestions? Or is my phone screwed?
N.B. I should probably add that I am on OTA Android 5.0, have been for a few weeks now....and my sim card works ok in another phone.

Have you tried reflashing a radio .img using fastboot while in the bootloader? Or maybe the cell tower is still having issues.

The warranty doesn't cover non-manufacturing defects. I don't think they'll replace it under warranty if its physical damage/wear and tear that didn't occur during the manufacturing process.
Also, Google's "policy" of a one-time replacement of a cracked screen for US customers is NOT part of any sort of warranty, more of a "why not since we have so many spares from people RMAing because of silly things like speaker hole size, light bleed and loose power buttons". Google has the right to refuse if they don't feel like it regarding this "policy".

Do I have to have rooted to reflash the radio ?
The mast isn't having issues anymore according to my operator, but I'm in a different location now anyway so am on a different mast.
Unfortunately I'm in the UK so don't qualify for the cracked screen replacement as I looked at that option when I first did it.
Does the fact that I can see the list of mobile networks in settings mean I don't have a hardware fault with the radio / modem?

1 more thing I have just noticed. I was going to check my IMEI to see if it was somehow blocked. However, when I go into Settings > About Phone > Status, the IMEI shows as 0.
When I dial *#06# the IMEI also shows as 0.
I'm guessing that's not right and it's the reason I can't connect to any network ?

That's probably your issue.
Flash a radio and cache.img from factory images.
If that doesn't work and you don't have an EFS backup then there's not much you can do.

Thanks. Not sure how my phone can just lose it's IMEI. Especially as I haven't rooted / unlocked bootloader, etc.

It's happened a couple times to people, mostly with cache derps. Either that, or they restored an EFS backup from a device with a different IMEI (which damages it permanently unless you had an EFS backup of the intended IMEI), flashed something not meant for their device, or something else that damages it.

I have a similar problem. No service, sort of stuck in airplane mode. Radio is off and I can't turn it on. It all started after I upgraded to 5.1.
I've tried downgrading to 4.4.4, cm11, flashed different radios etc... I do see IMEI though but my radio is unresponsive. When I manually try to save APN settings nothing happens, they don't get saved.

I had the same issue as the OP - a tower was down in my area, and even after it was restored my phone got stuck with no mobile date service (although the odd thing is, voice and texts worked fine, just not mobile internet).
A factory reset was the only thing that fixed it.

Hence if your IMEI changes or gets lost, it may fail to connect to the network - my case I can not call, receive calls wihout IMEI, because my network don't accept phones without IMEI. What you did to lost your IMEI? Did you flash any rom or custom rom?
I have the same issue with a HD.

I think, that this problem cause flashing custom kernel (my case), but I am not 100 % sure
I am having the same issue
Hi all,
I am having the same issue. Trouble is, I have not rooted my phone, or ever flashed a new image to my phone.
After being turned off for an evening, I turned it back on and, bang it was gone. It occasionally comes back if I let it power down to 0% battery and let it sit for a few days. Once it gets power back, hazzah, it works again, all be it for about half a day then it looses its mobile signal, upon rebooting, IMEI is gone.
My mobile is the XT910 and I am in the UK on the carrier EE/T-mobile. I have checked the sim to make sure it is not that, I have also restored to factory reset twice and still no luck.
I am more than happy to root this thing to get it working. But I want to make sure that it works.
Cheers

I'm having the very same issue since yesterday. I actually opened a new thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44189782#post44189782 before seeing this one.
Has anyone got a fix for this?

[Q] Suddenly phone has lost complete mobile network

Hello there,
Guys really need your help. This is for my friend's phone;
Since last evening, his One has lost complete mobile connectivity. He says he didn't do anything out of the ordinary, nor did he drop the phone or anything.
Absolutely no network even after countless reboots. Once or twice the phone caught some network but only for a few minutes. Tried different SIM cards too. He had been using this phone flawlessly for 3 months, until yesterday.
He is an amateur at playing around with the phone, so I rooted the phone and installed a Lollipop based custom ROM hoping that would solve the issue, but no luck. Even reverted completely back to CM11 (44S) and then did a factory reset, still no coverage.
The phone is connecting to WiFi and seems to have no other issue at all. Only connecting to mobile network is the problem.
What do you guys think? What should I try to do now? Has anyone else encountered this issue, how did you fix it? I read a lot of posts here and on OnePlus Forums but haven't found an answer to this specific problem yet.
Edit-
I did try setting the correct APN, no luck
I have the same problem! I have tried everything: other modems, full wipes, back to 100% stock. The customer service keeps telling me to look at my APN settings...
Sometimes the phone is also stuck in airplane mode after rebooting.

Same here, I tried flashing a modem as well.
You can dial *#06# and see if your IMEI is visible, few users have suddenly lost it and hence no signal. For me the IMEI is present, still no signal
I had a similar issue yesterday after flashing CM12.1. Mobile data would completely cut out with no signal. I found if it toggled mobile data off and back on in settings it fixed it for the time being.
remove sim

Power off the phone, take your sim out and restart the phone without it, then power off the phone, insert the sim, and restart it with the sim in.
Or see if you can't borrow a friend's sim from another carrier.
Worth a shot.

I tried this multiple times, just tried it again but no luck. All other SIM cards don't work, even from different carriers (tried 3).
Also my APN settings sometimes show and sometimes they don't. When I try to save new ones, they don't show up.
My IMEI and baseband are visible and have not changed.

It might be worth it to wipe all the partitions individually from recovery, however first browse the forums to make sure you can do some sort of unbrick or restore the phone if it blows.
There may be data that is not being erased with lesser formats or factory reset. There were things stuck with my phone and it didn't resolve until I formatted all the partitions--except system, I think--after which it worked properly.
Do not just leap blindly in though, so you can be sure to get back out if stuck.

Good luck.
You guys would be glad to know that the phone sprang back to life on it's own
Hadn't used it for about 2 days and was ready to take it to the service centre, thought I'd give it one last try, inserted SIM and voila. Full network and working smoothly since.

S6 (G920F International Version) No Network Selection/NO SIM DETECTED

Hello,
A friend of mine has a new S6 which is unlocked to work with any network/sim. The phone was working perfectly for a few months.
Now for some reason, it gives the message that no sim detected. Signal bars show up. But no connectivity.
The option in settings Select Network Operator is gone, and no longer there.
I have tried re-flashing stock 5.1.1 ROM and still the same problem. Tried flashing previous 2 modems and got the same error, so flashed back to current one.
Current Baseband: G920FXXU3QOKN
Kernel Version: 3.10.61-5896496 [email protected]#1
Another thing to note is that the phone shows signal bars perfectly, even though there is the no sim message. Also, on removing and re-inserting the sim, it reads the sim and asks to reboot, after which it comes to the same situation.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
I have same issue, and would gladly fix it. :/

IMEI was reset to 350000000006, then some Russian guy fixed it with Z3X box, SIM was able to register, but reception was awfull (lots of missed incoming calls, etc.). then I flashed some more fw and modem to check wheter it would fix dropping signal issues, and then it started not to recognize SIM.
So to sumarize, IMEI (with my EFS, not @tazaga one) is fine in the IMEI info, in SIM info everything is unknown, and mobile networks menu is missing from settings.
I changed SIM for a new one, just to be sure, and is detected only when inserted/removed, then phone wants to restart to enable mobile networks, but after restart, nothing changes.
Serial number was changed, but I corrected it in a file in EFS folder.

Ya by the sounds of it something is still funky in your efs folder
As far as my problem is concerned, the IMEI and the SERIAL number both match the inside and outside. So its not that.
Any other suggestions as to what it could be? Or how to fix?
Flash stock with smart switch but before that make efs backup ( in case things goes down )
Already tried smart switch and also Odin to flash stock. Neither worked.
Would flashing an EFS backup from another phone with the exact same model work?

well I tried to flash @tazaga efs, IMEI gets unknown right after that, but managed to boot up without custom kernel after Smart Switch initialization.
Beside that nothing changed, still no SIM and no mobile networks menu, and sadly couple hours later, phone went to a boot loop.
I took it to some 3dr party repair shop, without restoring original efs and bootable fw/kernel, they said they cannot repair it, but will give phone to some "software specialist" who may be (I seriously doubt it, according to my prevoius experience with 3rd party sw specialists (last time it took me half a day to reach the state phone was in when I deliverd it to them)) able to fix it with a 50-50% chance of fixing it.

I understand that, but I kinda doubt that no SIM issue is somehow tied to IMEI
Because with my efs backup (which was made after Z3X repair) IMEI is fine, but still no SIM.
I was kinda hoping that it could be something else in the EFS folder that made SIM undetectable, but even with your efs backup (thank you once again for it) SIM is not detected, so I guess that no SIM issue is tied to something else that is corrupted, or accidentally switched off.
I just dont know what could it be, because I was messing with service mode and codes unknown to me to try fix poor reception, so god knows what I did to put the phone in state in which is now.
Perhaps I am just trying to provide every information possible, and exchange it with others who have same issue, or more experience than me, so we can together figure out what has caused this and how to fix it, and help others who will have same issue in the future (and obviously I am not the only one with such issue).
And as I pointed out 3rd party repair shops didnt proove quite usefull (perhaps their services are just flashing/rooting/unlocking, but I can do that by myself without paying someone else to do it)
We will see next week, what will guys from repair shop say, but I am not very optimistic about that.
If nothing else I can still give some money to that Russian guy with Z3X, who fixed IMEI in the first place, I guess he won`t mind
And sorry for the OT.
This problem still going on with exact answer..
I also have same issue on customer's phone.
I've tried backup cert and efs then repair efs (on octoplus).
after repairing efs, it changed IMEI to 3500...006 but still no sim card.
Seems like I can't fix even with Octoplus.
Hopefully someone finds way to fix this asap ;(
So apparently EFS and stock firmware has been ruled out. I already tried different modems using Odin.
Anyone have any other ideas? I mean other than the Sim Not Found thing, I can't even see the network selection option in settings, and using *#*#4636#*#* only gives an error that not registered on network.
well @ariza27 made similar fix for S3...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/solved-siii-network-problem-update-sn-t1918601
I guess there is nothing to do but wait for developers to create something for S6.
If I am understanding that problem correctly, the SIM/Network problem in the S3 came from the SN or IMEI changing due to upgrade or flashing.
This phone has the same SN/IMEI inside and outside. And its not just refusing to register the SIM, the network options have disappeared as well. I had hoped flashing stock would help, but no cigar.
One thing though, would completely erasing the data partition, and wiping the entire firmware, and then installing stock or even another ROM help? Because even when flashing through odin, it preserved the data for some reason.
Can someone send me their EFS backup for G920F on v.5.1.1 Stock with baseband/modem G920FXXU3QOKN?
I don;t know if those things affect EFS or not, just want to be on the safe side. I want to try comparing the backup from my phone and one other and then try and restore using the 2nd one.
As far as the IMEI and SN changing goes, I am looking into how to prevent that in the first place on in the even that it happens to restore it.
Any help is appreciated.
Bump! Anyone?
Your imei number has been blocked/blacklisted because of a reason like lost or stolen phone, reported by previous owner, the only way to fix it is to replace the motherboard of the same model from a supplier on aliexpress website, there price is about $350.00 Australian dollars thats including EMS express postage, you get it around 4 or 5 working days, dont waste your money or time on anything else it won't work, I had same problem, now after new motherboard my galaxy s6 edge is working fine, expensive though.
Any luck with this issue?

The phone was purchased new. And Already spoken with both Samsung and Vodaphone regarding this and they say the IMEI and the phone are clear. The phone is in another country from that of purchase, but since there is no country lock or phone lock, this is not the problem.
And no such luck yet.

[Q] D820 lost signal, then stopped recognizing SIM

A few weeks ago I started having signal losses on my D820, later on it stopped detecting my SIM card altogether after I reset it.
It's been going on-and-off until about 2 weeks ago when a factory reset and cache wipe seemed to have fixed the problem - or so I thought - until it happened again today in what seems to be a permanent metamorphosis of my phone into an over-glorified 5" tablet with NFC.
So I started snooping around the googles, seems to be a common problem.
(can't post links yet but google isn't lacking results under "nexus 5 no sim no signal" and "Nexus 5 SIM not recognizing")
So far none of the "Turn airplane mode on and off" or "Reinsert the SIM / clean the slot" tech support quotes helped. The phone is physically intact, and none of the 3 SIMs I have in my disposal get any signal on the device in the rare case they even get recognized (My brother's G4 works fine with all 3). I did a few full factory flashes - ROM, Radio, recovery, everything (M4B30Z - latest 6.0.1, MMB29S, and even went back to 5.1.1 LMY48M). Also tried the latest CM13 snapshot, later on with a factory radio image on top but absolutely nothing. The CM ROM managed to consistently read the SIM but it didn't get any signal.
I would highly appreciate any information or insights, and even though I'm not exactly an expert I will be more than happy to help troubleshooting this jazz.

No reason to believe it is. Had it for over a year now, came unlocked without any contract with in closed packaging from a trusted retailer, IEMI was fine on the day of purchase.
It shows the correct imei via dialler?
Did you check imei on blacklist checker on swappa? Not likely to be blacklisted but you may as well rule it out.
If it's not blacklisted and can't be resolved via flashing roms, it could be a hardware failure.
The IEMI is fine and the phone is clean.
It could be hardware but that doesn't explain the problem being temporarily solved for quite a while by wiping the system, and a lot of the users complaining stated they started having the problem after upgrading to 6.0.1.
I've been running on stock unrooted MM for a while with no problems. A couple of people at work also run stock MM without an issue. I wonder if the problem is related to a particular batch.

My friends One cant make calls anymore?

So me and my friend swapped our Ones because mine had a broken aux port and his was fine, but his casing is pretty battered. So my phone which is now his, its been fine for a few weeks but a few days ago, the network has been playing up. He cannot make calls, but can send texts. But, in network settings, no networks appear when you go to select one. The APN settings are correct, signal is a bit hit and miss, sometimes its there, and sometimes its there but cannot connect to the internet. WiFi works fine. I also tried swapping SIM cards and the same issues were happening with my SIM or his SIM.
It was running Sultan's CM13 ROM with the "firmware_fixed" firmware/radio. I thought maybe something had gone wrong so I then flashed Sultan's Lineage OS and it is still having the same problems. I've tried a full wipe and factory reset, no luck.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it? or could it be a hardware issue?
Thanks,

I've tried flashing the idprophecy's c1_11_00006 firmware , the stock 0241 modem and also the firmware_fixed one. All of them are doing the same thing, the main issue is that I get an error while searching for networks. I can call my network operator's topup number but people cannot call me, it either cannot connect or goes to voicemail.

My friend is on EE and I am on Three. Both are different networks, and with both sims, it does the same thing, It cannot find the network. I have tried both sims in the other OnePlus One and it detects the networks with no problem.
I guess the next step would be going back to full stock and see if that works. If that is a no go, I can only assume its a hardware issue
Hi again,
I have tried again to fix this phone but I think I have exhausted all software options. I fastboot flashed all the original stock files, completely went back to stock ROM and the same issues are there. It gets signal, and it says that mobile data is working, but doesn't actually connect if i open the play store etc. I managed to get a call to work for about 5 minutes before the call ended on this phone, but was still going on the other phone which called it. It does allow calls sometimes but they drop out, other times it wont dial at all.
At this point, I can only assume there is some antenna damage or something similar? I did a quick google and worked out that the antenna is on the daughter board on the bottom of the phone, and there is also an antenna wire also. Would it be worth it to buy these replacement parts and see if this would fix the issue?
Thanks

Its my friends phone now, we traded. And he said he hasn't dropped it or anything like that. But judging how battered the phone is that he traded me, he might have damaged it and not realized. It had been working fine for me in the 2+ years I had the phone. And after the trade, the phone worked fine for him for a few weeks. Its very weird. I've tried my SIM and his SIM in the phone, both sims work fine in my phone but not his.

I see,so if you believe that there could be a hardware damage, you can go with the network antenna and see if it fares.
