[Q] How to open "App permissions" on Android 4.2.2? - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
today I saw in notifications "App permissions" and opened it, it allows me to manage permissions of installed apps. This should be a native feature as far as I know, the device runs 4.2.2 and is not rooted and the only managing app I have there is 3C toolbox but even that doesn't seem to have app permissions on it's own.
I think I saw this when I first got the phone as well, I had reset it last week and it notified me about this "App permissions" today.
I like it and would like to know how can I open this settings page? Via menu, or secret code or how can I get there again once I close it?
When I opened it from notifications it was turned off. I have turned it on, now when I try to turn it off it says:
"Apps will directly get permissions without your confirmation."
And I get asked when apps try to access something and seems like I am able to limit apps individually and their individual permissions and also manage them on this "Apps permissions" page.
I have not been able to find it in settings, manage apps nor Engineering mode, where is it hiding? How can I open it?
It looks like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Thanks.

Come on, someone has to have Android 4.2 and the knowledge here folks! Where is this "App permissions" hiding, where can it be opened?

It wasn't an option in 4.2

There are some app permissions editor apps you can download.

Before install app maximum app display and 3rd party permission app is another good option.

False, it is available in 4.2.
They changed it afterwards with 4.4 there you can get the opp apps or what it is to get the feature back. It's hidden in 4.2 though, hence I don't know how to get to it once I close it but it is obviously there. You can see the screenshots hey?

Yes, if I would root it then they would probably work.
Any good ones that are free and not bloated with rubbish/ads/... like most apps tend to be?

I don't know how you could get to it if it is part of your settings somewhere .
You can search "app ops" for some apps to get you to the hidden menu.
The app , Advanced Permissions Manager can remove permissions and reinstall app without them. Lucky Patcher can remove some app components and permissions then reinstall and some more. Xprivacy is an xposed module can restrict anything of an app.
To keep an app from being able to connect on data, wifi, you could use a firewall app. Xposed has a module for that it's called, LightningWall

App ops is a thing introduced in 4.3/4.4, so not to be confused with this older "App permissions" manager that is hidden in 4.2.

Does that mean the apps ops wouldn't work ?

AppOps
and similar applications give a message that says: "This app is incompatible with your device."
Which is obvious since these are meant for 4.3 and 4.4. Versions prior to these are different when it comes to permission management. And 4.2 has no appops.

Did you find something that will work for you ?

No, no one seems to know how to open this built in "App permissions" manager that I have in 4.2.2 and could one time open from the notifications.
Sure there are 3rd party apps and options to root and so on but why when there are features in the OS already.

Hi,
Well i have read it on the web - it seems that Android version 4.2.2 removed the "Permission Manager".
I'm in the same situation till i migrated my smartphone OS from Android 4.2 to 4.2.2 - thats' really enoying.
I suppose i'll flash the ROM to recover Android version 4.2 (i mean the official factory Android version of my smartphone) or something.....
Cheers.

root device and install 3rd party app for app permission

Open Home Deprecated

Ok so I have this installed on my phone and I have no clue what it is, never installed it nor can I find a way to uninstall it. Anyone else have it installed and if so did you find a way to delete/uninstall it?
It has the same thing in my downloads section of the market. The app doesn't show up in the app list under settings, though. It's really an annoyance and I think it is also causing the market to give me a false update notification. My boyfriend's phone does not have it installed and is not having any sort of the same issue with the market.
The only thing I think will clear it is a factory reset.
Update: I did a factory reset and before everything restored and I started using apps, it wasn't there. After I started using a few apps it was. No way to get rid of it until you reset the phone again. I don't know which app is causing it, but the few that I did open were task panel, eReader, and a word game. I removed them and reset. It has been quite a few hours after heavy use and it hasn't showed up in my downloads. I suspect one of those apps.
bump
this is really aggravating and many people dont even realize they have it on their phone. I have two nexus ones and its on both of them and on both phones i get the damn phantom application update notification. Has anyone figured out anything more about this? thank you
Where are you guys seeing it? I'm a pretty heavy app user, having installed/uninstalled quite a few, and haven't done any type of wipe; however, I'm not seeing what you're describing.

I believe the the old openhome app had the class name com.google.launcher2 this is same name that google have now used for the new launcher hence the market thinks its installed... which is isn't.
Has anyone tried to install open home & then uninstall? Maybe it will get rid of both...

Weird. I don't have that. You guys should use atrackdog to generate an installed alp list and compare them for commonalities.
Like all issues with this phone, I don't know if I'm supposed to contact HTC, google, or T-Mobile. Sound like a software issue so I'm guessing google?

I am not sure why you would need to guess in this case. It is neither a hardware or a plan problem. Google is your source for a solution. This is very likely dues to a previous installation of Open Home on an older android. As to why you can not uninstall it I can not answer, but at the least I do not have it in my installed software list.
Are you rooted? If so, you could go in and delete the apk from /data/app

Um, because Apps aren't vetted? com.google is just a java namespace it doesn't change anything or give you magic permissions.
Most likely openhome grew from someone starting with the launcher source and renaming it by adding "2" then tweaking it. The only bug here is that the market is looking for installed apps by "pname" whereas atrackdog doesn't.
Its a Market display bug guys, the app is _not_ on your phone.

Agreed, although I already left a market comment.
So I am not the only one. I have the bloody app on my phone too. I never installed it. It was there from day one and I can't remove it.

[Q] Application permissions restriction ?

All the applications we install , either we have to accept all the permissions or cancel the installation .
Could we change the permissions of the the applications after installation or while installing ?
There is a google thread on this .
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6266&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
Do we have any application that can change permissions of other applicaitons ?
You could try to modify permissions of an app using apktool, but then it will probably FC.
What about running an app from a sandbox. Would this be possible?
The sandbox could tell the app the phone is in airplane mode and give it access to a seperate filesystem.
Probably not even possible though

Reposted from http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6600:
When you install an application on Android, it tells you all the "features" it will be using, like being able to access your GPS location.
I have one or two applications made by large companies that I don't want to stop using, but they periodically poll your GPS location while the application is running, and the application has no reason to do so.
Everything else with the application is fine, I just don't want to permit it to use GPS.
Disabling Wireless and GPS ability everytime I run the application is a headache, and prevents my other GPS required applications from working.
When you install any application and it gives you that list of permissions/features it requires/uses, I would like the ability to uncheck ones I do not approve of, to prevent it from being used.
Examples of items I really desire ability to uncheck:
Your personal information
Services that cost you money
Your location
Phone calls
etc.
Have this modifiable after install in the Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications section.
If an application fails to work if I do this, I would rather wait for an update, or intentionally choose to allow it to work as intended with the feature I do not want, rather than be forced to "take it or leave it".
See Google Code for the issue:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6600.
Any experienced developers interested in working on a patch?

Another promising app is apktool, which can re-engineer an APK and change permissions
The Apex tool is also interesting. Links are given in android issue 6266, and I would re-post them here, but the anti-spam tools are not letting me.
@Willu: There is no "APEX tool" available as far as I know. Up to now, that's just a very good study of what should be established in the Android system itself (APEX stands for Android Permission Enhancement eXtension and is intended as a kind of API, as far as I understood). So e.g. at installation time, when prompted to "agree to the persmissions or abandon the install", there could be some "experts" button where the user could (un)check permissions separately.
They even thought of what would happen if the now "castrated" accesses a feature it thinks to be granted (in case the author was not aware that permissions could be revoked). For most cases, there's an easy way: Internet connection is simply "currently not available", SD card is "read-only", and so on.
I could not download the permBlocker application. However, directly editing packages.xml works for me:
adb pull /data/system/packages.xml
cp packages.xml packages.xml.bak
# modify packages.xml
adb push packages.xml /data/system/packages.xml
adb reboot
For modifying packages.xml, search the file for the package name (or part of the name). There is a <package> block. Inside this is a <perms> block. Delete lines with undesired permissions from the <perms> block.
The apk seems to be available at that forum now. Will try downloading later.
I know this post is a bit late but I wanted to share my trial with you
I ad a problem with the permissions too and I could modify the permissions of an application using apktools and it's working fine.
try it and you'll find it useful

[APP][4.0+] Better Open With

Introducing Better Open With
What is Better Open With?
With so many cool Android apps, Better Open With saves you the hassle of having to choose only one default app handler when you click a filetype, and without having to choose between "only once" and "always"!
Created to mimic Android's default "Complete action using" dialog, Better Open With shows you a visually similar popup screen when you choose to open a link, an image, a PDF or any other filetype - listing all possible app handlers as you normally see.
What's different is that you only see the popup dialogue for a few seconds (5 seconds by default, but customizable), allowing you to choose an app handler if you want, after which it will automagically open it with your preferred app!

Why use Better Open With?
Better Open With is handy if:
you switch between browsers, but usually have one preferred app;
you prefer using one app to view your PDFs, photos and other files, but sometimes use another app to edit them;
you usually want video links to open with a player, but sometimes you want to open them with an app that lets you download the file, and maybe yet another that will Chromecast it;

Add more filetypes
We should make a poll and see what other filetypes the Dev should add...!
I need to see it on my own eyes... This app might be something what I've been searching for months!
Good job and a big cheer for free software!
Just noticed this on google play. Very interesting. Anyone tried this out yet?
My Samsung GS3 default was to not make the choice stick, but my LG G3s' default is to make the choice stick and I have to uncheck the box each time. This could be my solution.

Why do you prefer an Xposed Module? What extra features can it get if this becomes an Xposed Module?
Please dont get me wrong, I appreciate the hard work you have put for developing this app. Xposed Modules has certain advantages e.g. can be installed over different devices and configurations if they support xposed with less chances of error or FC, smaller package size, feature can be turned on/off w/o uninstall etc.

Awesome app. Invaluable now that I have switched to Lollipop and lost xposed. Is it possible to add more types of Web Links like tapatalk and/or IMDB?

In Marshmallow I can't get browser links to open with Better Open With. This shows up in the settings. I've tried setting Better Open With as the default browser app but still can't open any links.
Is there a way to workaround or fix/patch this android 12 issue without app and with root privileges?
Awesome app btw, thanks

Block ads in messenger

Hey all, figured this out a few days ago and seems to have worked, so figured I'd pass it along. This method eliminates sponsored posts in Facebook Messenger. ONLY WORKS ON ROOTED DEVICES.
1. Open terminal, and get superuser access by typing
su
2. am start -n "com.facebook.orca/com.facebook.messaging.internalprefs.MessengerInternalPreferenceActivity"
3. Scroll down until you see
Gatekeeper Override
4. Search the word
sponsored
5. Find the entry in the search results
Android_messenger_sponsered_msg_report_flow
And tap it to toggle. Force stop messenger or reboot.
You're welcome
Is there easier way than this nightmare of console?
I received such error despite fact that I have the root.

I tried using "cd" command but got error that "home not set"?
I've been looking for something like that for weeks. I'm having troubles to follow your instructions. Could you share screenshots for example please?
Clarify from what folder we have to execute these commands?
And also, is it normal there is a space here : ".MessengerInte rnal"
Thank you.
Thanks!
Thank you so much, icedventimocha! Worked a treat. :good:
Btw, as Tomatot- noted, there shouldn't be a space in the middle of the word Internal when starting the activity in step 2.
Command worked when I ran it (without the space), and then after a force close, I still get adverts in messenger.
Alas, it has stopped working. Android_messenger_sponsored_msg_report_flow is still turned off on the above settings page, but ads are back.
Doesn't work anymore just tried it, android_messenger_ad_context_handler found that entry but sadly didnt kill ads even tried clearing cache and data before attempting.

Hi guys,
I think I've found a way to remove ads in Messenger. You need root
1) Download and install My Android Tools: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/wangq...my-android-tools-0-11-1-android-apk-download/
2) Open it, click on the left hamburger menu, open "service", go to Messenger and deactivate "AdsMessengerService", "AdsProcessPriorityService".
Let me know if it works for you. I didn't get any ads since then.
Didn't work for me unfortunately. Ads are still there. N910F, X-note Kitkat ROM.

Launcher with the ability to show frozen/disabled apps

Since years i was quite baffled that even most third-party launchers were refusing to offer a way to display frozen apps in a distinguishable way but i was never bothered to do any actual research into why and if there might be something out there that does it.
Today i was finally having enough and tried searching google for a solution with no avail. Only a stackexchange question that resulted in a definition war rather than pointing to solutions and a reddit thread from 9 months ago with no upvotes and no answer.
Thanks to the mentioned stackexchange question i downloaded Nova Launcher today and tried that, but although i really like the design, performance and customizability it does not seem to offer the key feature i was looking for.
What the launcher i'm searching for should offer:
A toggle to enable showing frozen apps in the app drawer (Like actually "pm disable" frozen, not some kind of workaround island type or greenified "hibernated")
When device rooted, tapping a frozen app will unfreeze and start it
When device unrooted it should just open the manage app screen for that device where android itself will offer an unfreeze button
Customizability; Show frozen apps semi-translucent, Show frozen apps in grayscale, Move frozen apps to the bottom of the list or in its own section/group
I forgot to mention that Lucky Patcher actually offers custom widgets to toggle apps but that has to be done manually for every app and is quite lacking in terms of looks and comfort
One last thing; I was even thinking about manually syncing the shortcuts via something like Tasker or Automagic4Android. But to be honest, even if it worked it would still be jank and more of a workaround than a solution

Never heard of or seen anything like that in my almost 10 years on this site and other sites, I'm pretty sure you won't find anything that can natively do what you want, you will probably have to end up settling for "janky workarounds".
interesting...and I was happy with Shortcut Maker apk lol
SDmaid still needs 4 taps to freeze/unfreeze apps while Andoid does that in about same number of taps. There is so much more customization that can be asked from Andoid.
