Sideload Microsoft Word, Excel & PowerPoint for Android on non-supported devices - Android Apps and Games

Since I've been receiving a lot of private messages on how to install the Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint for Tablet apps on non-supported devices, I decided to create this thread that guides you through every single step.
This how-to is meant for people who can't download these apps via the Google Play Store due to device/county restrictions. It's only showing you how to sideload these apps and get them to run on other screen-sized smartphones. The other minimum requirements might still be essential for these apps to run properly.
Official Minimum Requirements:
These apps work best on Android devices having 1GB+ RAM and running KitKat (4.4.x) or later versions.

If you run into problems that aren't directly connected to your device but concerning the apps themselves, please post those into the Microsoft Office for Android Community.
You might want to try to install the apps via the Google Play Store first:
Microsoft Word
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft PowerPoint
To become a beta tester, please follow the steps on the About page of this Microsoft Office for Android Beta Community.
If you aren't able to Install the apps via the Google Play Store, follow this guide:
Download the apk and OBB files.
Install the apks
Push the *.obb files to data/media/obb or to sdcard/Android/obb into corresponding folders named:
Code:

If there's a way to change the DPI of certain apps on L, that would be of great help.

Is the MD5 checksum correct?
You only changed the PowerPoint folder name, right?
Are the files in the right location? Each file needs to be in exactly one folder in data/media/obb
(See the screenshot I attached)
Did the files actually get copied there? Did you grant the file explorer superuser access to copy all files?

your the best, that did the trick. I was copying it over the wrong way. THANK YOU

That usually means that the downloaded package is corrupted or not fully downloaded. If you download it again, it should work.

Signing a document? Problems considering the app itself should be reported in the beta community on Google Plus. I can't think of any reason why this would be device specific.

Can you sign in to any other microsoft apps?
Did you try both, WiFi and mobile network already?
Did you play around with any settings concerning your web connection? (Proxy, etc)
What country are you located in? I honestly don't think they restrict the access via your IP rather than the play store, but who knows. Maybe using a tunnel to sign in?

This app Vending.apk is a Google Play Store, modded version. It remove countrys restrictions for apps.

Sorry to say that but it is not working for me

I know this is the google play store app, what i meant to say is that the phone installs another version after using this one (it installed the same version 3.5.16 i don't know why) so whenever i use this mod the phone automatically remove it and install an unmodded version again ... that's one thing
the other thing is that even when i was running this modded version i could not access apps from other markets i can only access egypt/middle east market
I tried it but it seems it's not working. I can't see the apps forbidden in my country. I followed the instructions but it's a no go!
I tried even uninstalling the stock play using TB and then installing this version yet failed to show me blocked applications also
I would like to know who is the creator of this modified to get in with to try and help debug the not working issue
I guess the op is not him

Instructions:
Note: This APK should work on Android 4.0+. You do need to be rooted.
The Gmail 4.2 APK is signed by Google, but with a different key than the one in the Play Store (we checked the signatures - they differ). One is probably the test key and the other the production key. For this reason, you can't simply install it as an update and therefore need to be rooted with the ability to mount the /system directory for writing in order to remove the existing Gmail APK.
Important: Once Google updates Gmail in the Play Store, you will want to revert this process or at the very least delete the Gmail 4.2 APK you installed here if you want to update it from the Play Store.
OK, let's get down to it. You'll probably need ADB installed on your computer. There is a chance that this might work without ADB by just removing the APKs mentioned below and installing the new one, but it didn't seem to work reliably for everyone. This should, though:
1. Download Gmail 4.2 apk.
2. Rename it to Gmail2.apk.
3. Make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong (this is always a good thing to do before messing with your device).
4. Remount /system for writing (via your favorite root-aware file explorer).
5. Delete (or move if you want to save the APKs) all other versions of Gmail. Usually there are 2 or 3 copies. One will be in /system/app (that's the original Gmail that was pre-installed on the device) and there may be a few in /data/app (these are the updates installed from the Play Store). They'll be called "Gmail.apk," or "com.google.android.gm-[number].apk," An easy way to tell is to look for the Gmail icon.
6. You may need to delete the .odex files matching the APKs in step 5 too, if you have them. Neither I nor Artem had to do this, but there are many different ROMs out there, and we're trying to cover all bases. Ignore this step and only come back to it if something doesn't work later.
7. Reboot. Once you do, you should have no Gmail as far as Android is concerned.
8. You can try to install the Gmail 4.2 APK you downloaded at this point by tapping it in your favorite file explorer (move the APK to your device first, of course). If that doesn't work, or if you prefer ADB, fire up a command line and type adb install Gmail2.apk.
If you get an error message, you probably didn't delete all copies of Gmail. If you don't feel like playing with ADB for Step 8, I've also gotten it to work by just copying the APK to /data/app, but that's not as fool proof as "ADB install".

[Q] How to manually install .apk

I've been trying to install a particular app to my phone, Nexus 4, rooted custom rom, etcetc.
The app in question was pulled from the Play store some time ago and it seems Google went further and removed the free version of the app from users devices without permission as well. I have the pro version as did many others and from what I've read, the pro version was not removed. However I flash roms and eventually lost it and that required a reinstall.
The problem: traditional methods of installing the .apk give the error "App not installed."
How can I install this app manually? The only other method I could think of was to try to root copy it to /system/app but that didn't work. And I'll reiterate, so we're clear, browsing to .apk and installing through explorer by clicking it does not allow the .apk to install. So, suggestions?
You could try sideloading it using Android Injector. (If it fails, it'll tell you why)

The app isn't warez but it is one of the unapproved apps by google now, I mainly just wanted to look for an alternate method of installing apps in case this kind of app blocking became more prevalent. You have to admit, Google did a real number on blocking this app. Thanks for the help anyway guys.
the command that worked for me was:
adb install app.apk
You can make a folder in /system/app with its name without space as folder name and copy the apk to that folder.
Apk name should be same as the folder name +.apk.
Then reboot your device.
After reboot the app will be definitely installed as a system app. But some apps might be stable but some not.

[Q] How to manually install - getting "App not installed." error

I am trying to install an App which for some reason will not install in the country I am visiting. The App is a free App, but Google Play has blocked it from downloading into this country. I managed to download the app from the evozi apk-downloader but when I click on it in File Manager it will not install and I get an "App will not install." error.
I would like to try and install the app manually but despite all my searching have not been able to come up with a way to do this. I tried copying the apk file to the system/app directory and rebooted, but that did not work. I then downloaded ZipSigner to sign the apk file and put the created opex file in the system/app folder and rebooted again, but still no results. I've tried some other installers but still unable to get it to install, even when I am offline with my GPS off.
How can I manually install an app to bypass the Google app installer?

did you enabled allow installation of apps from sources other than Play store if not go settings> Security> tick unkown sources and try it again it will surely help..and use the file browser from the phone and find the apk that you want to install n click on it and install

The app I want to install is FlightAware - I travel a lot, hence my desire to install this app before I return to the USA. I found that the ShopSavvy apk also has this problem. Both of these are freeware but somehow they won't install on my phone. My Google account was created in the USA with a USA address and has a USA credit card attached to Google Wallet, but with both apps I just get a "App not installed." error.
I already have the Unknown Sources - Allow installation of Apps from unknown sources Checked and the Verify Apps - Disallow or warn before installation of apps that may cause harm - Unchecked.
hmm then you sure those apks work correctly sometimes errors occur when its incorrectly or incompletely tampered.. or else try this go to settings> application manager>google play store and clear data and clear cache and do the same in google play services and try again

Question Install apk from local storage

Hey guy's, I hope somebody can help me out here. I can't find any explanation on internet. I want to install an apk from the local storage on my Rog phone 5 ( android 12,un rooted) .
In the old days it was pretty simple, just a slide to activate the "allow unknown sources", click on the apk file and it would install. Now on the rog phone 5 in the apps&notifications, special app-acces, install unknown apps it only shows a few apps that I can give permissions to install from unknown sources. Like Chrome, file manager, gmail, brave browser etc. ( see picture). So I give the file manager or brave the permission, restart the phone, go to the apk in the file manager but it won't install.
It will just show the contents of the apk. If I select the apk I can remove it, rename it, compress it, anything but install it.
I can choose open with brave but still nothing happens. I tried downloading an app in the playstore to install apk files but it won't even list the apk file. I have no clue why they made something that used to be so easy so complicated. So I hope somebody can enlighten me how to install an apk on this phone. Thanks in advance!
Have you enabled install unknown apps in developers options ? Special app access allows you to allow/not allow individual apps to install unknown apk files. I think you have to enable it in developer options for the native installer first. I may be wrong but it's worth checking.
I'll go check if the option is there and let you know. Tnx man.
The only thing I found was " force app allowance on external drive" and but it changed nothing.

you could try
Code:
adb shell settings put secure install_non_market_apps 1
adb shell settings put secure unknown_sources_default_reversed 1
that would be from terminal on pc or you could install settings database editor from play store and grant it permissions via adb and you will have gui to change system settings
Could you please walk me through how to do this? Tnx.

Ok, first I guess I need to ask some questions. Have you tried a different file manager, installed thru play store ? How many .apk files have you tried to install ? If it is just the one app that you have in storage it may be corrupt. Have you tried a fresh copy of it ? Is it an old app and is it compatible with your Android version ?
I don't know what I was thinking, that isn't in developer options anyway, it's in security. It would seem odd for them to remove the ability to install personal apk.
