I ordered my OPO a couple of weeks ago and just received it earlier this week. My main problem is my signal strength. It regularly goes from LTE to 3G to no signal throughout the day. I came from an HTC One M7 and always had 3-4 bars on LTE with no problems. i also have AT&T's home phone service and it remains at full bars all the time. I have unlocked/rooted it along with trying different roms but I still have poor to no signal most of the time. Another thing that concerns me is the recent announcement of Cyanogen breaking off from OPO. I've searched for possible fixes for the signal issue but could not find anything that fixed the issue. Maybe I was just sent a defective device. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Unlocking and rooting, then installing custom ROMs will have no effect on signal strength. The only thing you can try on your end is to flash one of the older modems (thread in General Section) to see if that helps.
You may want to RMA the device if that doesn't help. But don't let the Cyanogen/OPO issue influence your decision. IMHO, that's not a good reason to abandon your device.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will try one of the older modems and see if that helps any. If I can't find a modem that works than I will RMA. I don't think I would abandon it just for the Cyanogen thing but I was still a little concerned about it. I just wasn't sure if that would affect the future of the device (such as OTA updates and Lollipop development). I am paranoid about silly things and just want to cover all of my bases lol.

I have I think a kind of strange problem. I've had my V or a few months now and all of a sudden it doesn't get move than 2 bars on the reception scale where as before it used to get 3-5 sitting in my rec room. Don't know what changed other than adding and removing some apps that I wanted to try out. Don't know which are still there that weren't before but wouldn't think that apps would cause the reception to be poorer.
Thought about an antenna booster/adapter/extension but thought I'd ask others first.
Also, anyone added any antennas to theirs? I noticed there isn't an external connection for one and everything I've read so far talks about add one with the external connection.
Any help would be appreciated.

My optimus had problems like that too, but after upgrading my by rom, baseband stuff is quite better.
Which one are you using ?

Agreed, Updating the PRL is highly recommended.

Have you really noticed a difference by upgrading your PRL?
Don't know what PRL is
In reading all the responses I was afraid since I don't know what the PRL is. Several places warned against changing things in the PRL if you don't know what the PRL is.
I have rooted my phone and have changed the rom a couple times including bricking it a couple times but had a backup so I recovered but don't know what the PRL is so didn't try that avenue.
Jim
I flashed my PRL today and could only get data to work. SMS and Phone stopped working so I flashed back to my original PRL. I think it was trying to connect to the tower closests to where I was, but told me to call customer service If I wanted to use it.
ROM issue on signal reception

Recently I upgrade my ROM to cyagenmod 10.1. It shows the signal is very poor, but I did not face the issues on call receiving/making. This is the known issue ( fail to refresh the signal strength in status).
Also faced some other issues ( phone hang while call is coming in 'phone locked' condition'.
Finally changed the OS to Android 4.2.1 & PAC-MAN 19.9.0. Except the battery drain issue, no more issues now.
Hi,
My One S seems to occasionally have a few connectivity issues with 3G, I am not sure they are related to the signal issues already discussed in other threads in this forum. I have an international handset, MAO black version (has two tiny chips too, but not worth complaining about), running stock firmware, haven't done the dev unlock yet.
1) Sometimes the phone shows 'No Service', but I still have a working data connection and can make calls. Sending/receiving SMS appears not to work for some reason though. Can work around by switching into and out of airplane mode. Until I do that any SMS I compose under these conditions just pends, after the workaround they do get sent after a few minutes.
2) Sometimes something seems to go wrong with the 3G data connection, all the internet apps suddenly say they have no connection, alogcat says that DNS lookup is repeatedly failing even though I have a strong signal and 3G/HSPA connection (also tried connecting to IP addresses directly, doesn't work either). Tried getting online via Wi-Fi and it works, but all the Internet connectivity fails if I turn Wi-Fi off. If I reboot the phone it is able to get online again.
I brought this problem up in a live chat with HTC customer support and they have advised me to arrange for them to collect the phone for repair, the shop from whom I bought the phone advised the same. Just thought I would share it here and find out if it is common, or it is likely, as HTC think, there's something wrong with my phone's antennae. (My thought is that both could also be software problems)
Anyone else experience problems like this?
I get the no service thing all the time, I pull it out of my pocket and press the power button, it says no service. I am going to call t-mobile in the next few days, I am trying to collect more data. It does it on my same spot on the couch where I used to get good coverage on my old phone. It does it on the same desk at work that I used to get good reception at. It kinda sucks.

Yup, I get that and trying to get more data before sending it back to HTC. I'm not really certain but it's as if there is something wrong antennae? Seems to be quite a few with similar mobile network issues though.
I still have my old Motorola and with sim out of One S in the reception is good where the One S struggles to get a signal - if at all
I have the same issue as Kenyw:
No connection for a while although within covered area.
Strong connection bars but no internet
Usually I switch to airplane mode and back then it works...until the next time!
Very frustrating! I don't think changing the phone would solve the problem!
I have the same exact issue as the OP. Another example would be the streaming of music using Pandora and Slacker. I can listen to 1 song and skip 2 or 3 songs at best before I start having issues where it just keeps loading and I am in 4G range and 3G which shouldn't be a problem still.
Same issue here.

I did exchange my One S for another and it is just the same
It's a bit of a queer issue. I know where I live I have a good Three UK signal as per experience with the Motorola phone. I can be anywhere between 2 bars (approx 104dBm) and no signal in the house and around the yard. Yet I can walk 20 yards towards mast approx 1 mile away and as soon as I get LOS (no buildings, trees) on the mast I get full signal???
I buy my One-S a week ago in Germany and facing the same issue in Israel with Orange 3.5G network. I really don't know what to do now.

Alon,
As mentioned in many different threads opened here in XDA, the issue is related to the phone and its current software version and not to the operator/SIM/area in the world.
Stay tuned and hopefully shortly HTC will provide OTA update or root your device and install one of the custom ROMs based on the new RUU 1.70 which might be solving this issue.
Oren
Thanks,
I will keep waching the threads around waiting for solution.

Hi
Got an HTC One S on Friday and have found the signal strength to be pretty poor on 3 and 4G.
Was wondering if anyone else had noticed this issue and was wondering what the best phone would be to exchange it for should I go down the 'return' route.
I did find quite a few threads on Google with the same complaint, like this one here:

Have a look in this thread, my HTC One S is absolutely horrible in both wifi signal and cell reception - yet others (even in thread below) with the same providers do not see any problems. Go figure:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687239
'fastdormancy' change in build.prop might help you and might not - but please report if it did (would root my phone for it)
The interesting thing for me is, this problem is not exclusive to the USA because I've found many threads from the UK as well specifying the exact same problem as we have.
I spoke to TMob yesterday and they said they have had a lot of returns due to signal issues and she did say there would be another update to hopefully resolve the issue but she could not when that would be and also said she thought the first update was meant to resolve the issues but had not worked. Can't vouch for any of that, just passing on what she said.
Bottom line for me is, if HTC have released a phone that is patently lacking in signal for so many people I will wait until Thursday and get the S3.
My amaze got ok signal and awful WiFi when the ics upgrade was leaked... First thing I've noticed with the one s is that signal and WiFi are much better

Wifi signal it works great sometimes specially after a reboot, 3g works very unstable sometimes good, then move 2m and no signal at all.

Of those I'm trying to get a better baseband.. mostly for call quality but if it could help out 3g/4g.. Would be nice... I'm obviously on the one from plain stock(went straight to paranoid out of the box)... so wondering what i can flash that may help improve... any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated
You have to try them yourself. There is no single modem/radio that is best for everyone. Reception is relative to your location, proximity to tower, environment, weather, and a host of other factors.
For me, I noticed that upgrading to VRLK1 was an immediate downgrade in radio quality as my phone no longer held onto LTE with - 110 dbm in my home. It kept reverting to 3G and this rarely changed through my time at home . I live in an extended LTE coverage but fringe LTE > 3g lol Soon as I switched back to VRLJ1 my phone connected to LTE within seconds and held onto it without me even moving. I wouldn't recommend using VRLK1 but I'm one person of thousands who will be using it. Can't take anyone's experience as fact if you aren't in their environment with them. People fully covered by Verizon and who always see 5 bars and - 80 or better (closer to 0 is better) will not see much difference between radios.

Trial and error my friend that's the only way to figure out what's best for you. Myself personally i find the latest jelly bean radio VRLK1 to be the best, but as you can see the guy above me doesn't have the same luck with it as i do, so while ill tell you its amazing, he tells you its not. You'll just have to try out the radios and see which one gives you the best results that you desire
It's easily 50% worse than my last phone (palm pre 3) and I've never had issues at my home with anyone's verizon phone.
I did flash LK1 RPM and Radio from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007414
I'm not sure if that has any bearing on it and am also not sure if it was like that before. I did it all when I was in town.
Is there another radio I can flash and see if it's better? Or does the GSIII just have garbage reception on the outskirts?
TIA TIA
Diddo on all that..here is a list with all the modems.let me know if you find the best
Good luck

I've tried the miui 4.1
stock JB
and the mean jellybean one I posted above.
To be honest when I first flashed any ROM on to my GS3 my reception was terrible. Every ROM that I used was the same, I also tried every radio available.
My only solution was just to go back to stock which I did now this Stock ICS has me at 4-5 bars everywhere I go.
My last CM ROM had me at 0-1 bar in the same places.
I hope this helps.
Check to see if you have the updated prl version 15154. Do this by going to settings, about phone, status. I think that is an updated list of the towers and that could be your problem. If its not the updated version just shut phone off take out SIM card for 2 min and then just start it up and it should automatically update. I read this somewhere in another post and just figured i'd pass it on. Hope it helps.
Txs mike..I was on something like 14015::' 1 month of fiddling of different modems and radios

Unfortunately I'm already on this PRL
Going to try some ICS roms I guess.
I have tried each radio as they have come out with mixed reviews. Some are better than others for me but YMMV. I have found the latest VRLK1 is what works best for me. I came from the Thunderbolt, and I really miss the reception I had with that phone; however, that is the ONLY thing I miss about it. I am currently running CleanRom v5.0 and VRLK1. I definitely get the best reception, and can maintain 4G at work while the other radios would drop to 3g or 1x. I only hope it continues to improve, but I don't think it will ever be as good as I had with the Thunderbolt. Good Luck.
Did you try all the radios, even the ICS ones.

Mark as solved!
I tried every radio I agree the newest seemed to work best but still was ridiculous. Barely any service even though I had two bars at times. Not enough for a single call and had to be by a window to get spotty text service.
Traded for a lumia 822. Works perfect.
This is funny. Coming from the nexus this phone has way more signal and better reception. Instant switching from 3g to 4g and to wifi. Ive tried every radio and they all work very well. Tried on my nexus and all were horrible. Just my .02 cents but this phone rocks.

As others have said try out all of the older radios and use whichever one works best for you. Unfortunately, this phone is not particularly known for having a strong radio (and no software update is ever going to really fix that).
If you are really on a fringe area of service, this might not be the best phone for you. In my experience, Motorola phones have always had the best radios in the industry, and are the most reliable in fringe service areas.
