[Q] Cannot turn on WiFi Moto G 1st gen us retail 4.4.4. - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am unable to turn on WiFi on my moto g 1st generation US retail global GSM. I press the WiFi toggle button and it never goes to on - just switches back to off. In the WiFi settings screen, there is no information and again I am unable to switch the toggle button to on.
The phone has been unlocked, rooted and TWRP recovery installed. I am using stock android Kitkat 4.4.4. with the xposed framework and the gravity box module. I have reset to factory and re-installed some back-ups which were created before this problem started, but still I cannot turn the WiFi on even with the factory reset or with the backups installed. I have also tried a couple of those WiFi fixer apps.
My router has been tested with other devices and is working properly.
The phone is under warranty, but I live outside the US in Japan and presume it would be a hassle to return it for a replacement, so any help would be most appreciated.
Thank you.

Hey man, since you unlocked your boot loader, your warranty is already voided :/
Try flashing the stock recovery along with a stock zip for your model...maybe this is a kernel issue...

Thanks. Will give it a go. I have a feeling it's a hardware issue though.

I too have ran into this issue, and for me it was having mismatched libraries for WiFi in /system/lib for the kernel version I was running. I would try reflashing the kernel that came with the ROM you are running.

Thanks for the advice. I flashed the kernel and that has not helped. I still have the same problem.

What is the logcat output when trying to activate WiFi? I find 3C Toolbox to be a useful app for filtering logcat, it has a free version on the app market

Thank you for the reply. I have install 3CToolbox and gone to the logs. It looks as if the error I'm getting is "Wifi Service (1076) Invoking mwifistatemachine, setwifienabled" followed by "Wifi statemachine (1076) Failed to load driver". Is there anything else I should look at?

I would say that points to the issue being with the firmware or kernel module involved. I would suggest downloading the entire stock firmware & ROM and flashing each partition in fastboot. The ROM generally only carriers the /system partition. If that still doesn't work, it's probably hardware unfortunately.

Thanks, I'll give that a go.

You should have no problem returning your phone for warranty if it does turn out to be a hardware issue (unlocked bootloader or not) if you follow this guide and re-locking your bootloader. If it's not a hardware problem then just that guide should set it straight.

Thanks. I restored to stock and the problem persists. One error during restore was that mfastboot would not erase user data.
Now the wifi will do one of these things: Will not turn at all (as before). Connect occasionally, then stop. Turn on, freeze and refuse to connect. I guess it must be a hardware problem, unless anyone has any other ideas. Thanks for all your help.

Forgot to add that you may have to flash the default bootloader animation to get rid of the warranty voided page on boot. Can't remember if that guide resets it or not

Yes, I'll restore everything to stock and send it back. Thanks again for all your help.

Recovered from boot loop but constant crashes with older ROM

I am helping a friend to get his One Plus One 64GB to work again after an OTA update broke it.
Initial Problem
Two days ago she started an OTA update which made the phone reboot constantly before even android started. Basically it showed the logo for about 6s then vibrated and restarted again. I later found /o/Android/data/com.cyngn.fota/cache/cm-12.0-YNG1TAS17L-bacon-signed.zip so I assume that this was what was installed.
The phone is completely untouched otherwise. She has no computer knowledge whatsoever and says she didn't give it to anyone.
My attempt
I was able to install cm-11.0-XNPH33R-bacon-signed.zip and cm-11.0-XNPH22R-bacon-signed.zip via sideloading. The phone started ok but was crashing all the time. I am not able to get into settings to activate developer settings (adb) because the crash notifications hinder navigation and after about 10s the whole gui crashes and I see the black screen with the hexagon loading logo. The latter firmware is worse meaning it crashes at a higher frequency.
The Problem
She didn't expect any problems and does not have a backup of her data. Thus I can't do a factory reset or use fastboot.
Question
Did I use the wrong ROM? There seem to be many variants. I haven't found any information which explains the differences.
Could I maybe flash a minimal ROM that would not crash to backup the data and than do a factory reset?
Is there any way to activate adb access without having to navigate to settings?
I've experienced your issues as well when helping another friend out, try using a newer version of cm11s, something like 44S /44R (i dont remember what it is) or 05Q, those should not have the issue and everything should work fine
Jst flash a newer modem in recovery

The problem here is that you flashed an older build, going backwards like that is what's causing the crashes. Grab the latest build from here:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347802356
Flash that and hopefully you'll be ok.

That won't help, flashing an older build than what was previously installed without wiping properly will cause problems.

Actually this is what I did in the very first beginning but I encountered the same rebooting symptoms like after the OTA update. Since it didn't seem to change anything I didn't mention it. I used cm-12.1-YOG4PAS1N0-bacon-signed.
Any other ideas? I am about to unlock it with fastboot but really would prefer not to delete all user data.

Oneplus one acting weird

My opo fell in water so its screen was not working. My father gave it to a mobile repair shop who repaired it for 4k. When he checked the phone everything seemed alright. He was able to call me etc etc. Then he couriered me the phone. When I got It... It had cos13 latest version. I checked everything except calling. Then I rooted my phone. Flashed oreo. I inserted my sim. It was able to detect that it was an idea sim and import contacts from it but it showed no service. I thought it was the rom. I flashed Tugapower N49. Same problem. So I thought restoring it to stock might solve the problem. Used oneplus one recovery tool to restore it to 4.4 . Still the same problem. It can detect the sim but can not catch any signal. I check my Imei number. Its still there. But I was not able to run the ping test. Then I thought of using this phone for checking roms only and use my Lumia(I hate Lumia) for calling. Rooted it again. Flashed oreo. Flashed its gapps. It show installation complete but its stuck there...... Waited for half an hour. Forced restart. oreo opened but It was nt factory reset although I had wiped it and it shut down after some time. after that my phone reached the android screen only and cant proceed further. I thought maybe force closing my phone during gapps installation did this. Tried to install tuga power.. error executing update binary. Had one more nougat rom. Installed it. Again it didn't show that starting google screen which u see when ever u open a new phone. Basically It was again not factory reset, Wiped everything except system. still this happened. Returned back to stock using recovery tool. Now I tried to install multirom so that I can install the oreo rom. after rooting multirom wasn't able to download anything. Downloaded it manualy. Flashed multirom twrp using fastboot. opened recovery . Not working. phone rebooting. Flashed the previous recovery which I was using before multirom one, That one is working properly!!! What is wrong with my phone???!!!!!

Tried to do a factory reset, now I can only book into TWRP

Hello folks,
I successfully installed TWRP and Magisk on G7 Power, without needing to use a stock image, using flug32's guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=81305325&postcount=358
(I didn't install Edxposed)
Restored apps and settings via Google Backup, installed ViperFX & CallRecorderFix from Magisk and increased media volume levels in BuildProp.. Everything was working fine for a couple of days, and then the camera kept giving me the Camera Busy error; the usual restore permissions, and restart phone fixes didn't sort it, so wanted to a factory reset. Tried this from settings, but of course, it just boots in TWRP. So then I saw a post that seemed to suggest that you have to do a wipe via TWRP to do this, and now it just boots back into TWRP, I presume that I have wiped something that is needed during normal startup.
Is it possible for me to get it to boot back into the stock image that is/was on the phone, and if so, how do I do a factory reset?
Or am I going to have flash another stock image (the RETGB doesn't seem to be available) following the instructions in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/g7-power/how-to/guide-moto-g7-power-supra-flash-to-t3927138

I think you are going to need to flash a stock rom.
Are you sure it was on software channel Retgb?
Not Tescogb or Eegb
It's a 1955-4 ?

I am pretty certain that it was on RETGB, as it came unlocked from another supplier, and I seem to remember checking after I had rooted it.
If I put Tescogb or Eegb on it, will that lock it to those networks ?
It is a 1955-4, so I presume RETEU is the best option for a compatiable unlocked ROM.

Using Tesco or EE will not lock it to those carriers
But there maybe some radio issues.
Yes you will likely have batter compatibility with a 1955-4 rom
Reteu does look like the best option.

No wifi signal.......no sim signal help please !!!

ello,
I need file for HTC U-11 Version 8.0 latest one,Following are the details
cid: BS_US001
mid: 2PZC 50000
product: htc_ocnwhl
after ruu and custom rom flash phone boots up normal, however I cant get pass the blue setup screen wizard as my phone isnt seeing any wifi connection and sim card isn't detected. So am stuck there, are there any file to restore my wifi signal and sim signal. I can enter TWRP though. Any and ALL help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance
I have a very similar problem, however I am and have always been on stock ROM. Yesterday suddenly my phone lost wifi and telephony connection. It was just there, sitting on my desk, one minute it was working and I was checking my e-mail, the next one it was not. The phone now detects no SIM card and if I try to enable wi-fi it just hangs in "enabling" status for some time until it gives up and disables it again.
I think it might be some hardware or low-level issue, even if I am having a hard time how anything could happen while my phone was sitting on the desk. Next step is a hard reset and if it doesn't, then there is no hope left I think.
Your symptoms are similar, even if it happened after flashing. The only thing which I hope might help you is that, assuming that your situation is comparable to mine, if you manage to get past that screen or to access the Bluetooth settings, you can probably connect the phone to the internet through Bluetooth tethering. Once you are connected to the internet, many things are easier. Also, is that blue screen the one forcing you to sign in to a previously synced account (factory reset protection)? If so, there used to be a loophole in this, there are several youtube videos about it which you can easily find. Perhaps it's still there.
EDIT: Sorry for the necroposting, for some reason I overlooked the date of the original post.

Just for future reference: my U11 never resumed working after this. I kept using it for two full months, after moving my SIM card to a spare phone (good old M8) and using bluetooth tethering to get it to connect to the internet. I hoped that
for some reason the problem would at some point just go away by itself, which of course wasn't the case. I didn't try a factory reset because other people had no luck with it. So no happy ending for this story.
Should anybody else encounter this problem and land on this thread, I have nothing better to recommend than just doing the same: don't bother trying to fix it, move your SIM card to some older spare phone and use bluetooth tethering to bring the U11 to the internet. This will win you some time to pick a new phone without rushing, while critical things like Whatsapp, authenticator apps and so on will keep working, making it easier to migrate to the new phone.

I had similar situation. My battery juiced down and closed automatically. Then i plugged it to charge, waited for full charge and then opened it. Wifi and Sim were not working after booting. It was there before power is over ans it has gone after powering it back. I tried many things as factory reset wipe cache/dalvik etc. By the way I was using lineage os 17.1 for a few months.
The only thing that worked was flashing original stock rom via download mode. after this i got sim working back but no wifi still. now i am using it as a spare phone with only mobile internet connection.
I showed it to a few repairmen but they told me it is onboard wifi at motherboard of phone and they can't fix it without replacing motherboard which is quite expensive nearly as a new phoe.
If anyone know how to bring wifi back please tell me too.

yes, this can be fixed, i had the same problem coming back to stock from los 17.1, you need to downgrade to oreo then let it update to pie, but it depends on the phone you have, mine is us unlocked, there is a tutorial here somewhere on how to do it. look see if you have a wi fi mac address if it's 2x.00.00.00.00.00, it same as i had.

Yes i have same wifi mac address as 2x.00.00.00.00.00
Thanks for advise, i will try it. Can you refer me a manual for this downgrading? I looked to forums but there is a problem that says it can't be done if it is s-on. I unlocked bootloader before installing los 17.1. Also they say it can only be downgradable from oreo to nougat. So, if you can share a guidance for how to do downgrade from pie to oreo when s-on, it would be grade.

here's what i did:
1. connect the phone to pc and boot into bootloader
2.flash hosd_signed.img (fastboot flash hosd hosd_signed.img) this has to be the hosd for your software

that is for us unlocked, if your phone is not us unlocked i don't have another hosd.
So I was able to solve this problem by flashing the oreo RUU from htc, then flashing twrp, complete wipe, and restoring a previous LOS 10 backup. Now my wifi is restored, and mobile data is back to normal.

Can you tell more detailed instrustions for how to do it?
I have got los 17.1 backup. when I tried to flash it with twrp it seems flashing but after finishing phone restarts and nothing changed. I tried many times. I got backup but it does not flashing back. What could be the problem?

you need to pull the hosd from an oreo ruu for your phone, if there is one.what ever the software number is.
@ Aldo101t

@ Black Antitoon, Read your problem of WiFi and Sim Signal not working. I'm also facing the same issue, exactly a similar one, without doing anything it just happened. Would like to understand if you have got any solution. Thanks in advance

@abhi2301: sorry for answering so late. Unfortunately I couldn't fix this problem. I kept using the phone for two months after moving my SIM card to a spare phone and connecting the U11 to the internet using Bluetooth tethering, which was the only thing that worked. I kept hoping that at some point connectivity would start working again, but that wasn't the case. I eventually gave up. Sorry for not having better news.
As you probably read (from post #13 on), other users had better luck by flashing a RUU, hope this can work for you too.
Cheers
I ran across this post and it fixed my issue regarding no wifi,
My u11 encrypted? lost wifi and mobile signal, after restore rom, it bricked
Please check the pictures: short story first: after reset the ROM with recovery mode, the u11 can go through the encrypting screen, then it will loop and stuck in the setup screen. I didn't really encrypt my phone ever, I only had a simple...

So which one is your solution of all the messages in the post? Can you copy paste the message?

solved: lost wifi while rooting, can I reflash modem and get it back?

So I updated to 11.0.08.14.KB05BA.
I then rooted using the guide here, via Magisk
Rooted, everything works, except:
My wifi connection will not turn on (let alone connect).
I hit the wifi icon, it "turns on" and then "turns off"
I go to the wifi settings and hit the bar to turn it on. it stays red, but no wifi connections are made.
I tried to reset the wifi, mobile, data setting under systems, nothing changed
I tried to reflash the patched boot file without any change.
so my question is, can I fix it by:
A. flashing the stock modem.img? and if so what is the correct adb text (fastboot flash modem modem.img?)
tried it, no change, so I guess I have my answer
B. reflashing stock everything and starting a new root with Magisk and hope it works a second time (i.e. start over)
Yup. Problem that the stock version on the OP website is not the same file as Oxygen Updater "Stock version". No clue. Got the boot from the Oxygen updater version and will try it with it now.
Fixed: all good now. I will delete this this post in a moment.
Thanks @parakleet
With my thanks,

I am guessing you flashed something that was modified or possibly images for a different model.
I think the only solution sure to resolve your issue is to return to the stock image of your device.
anyone know how to delete a thread?

Don't delete it. You're journey will help others avoid the problem or help them get out of it if they do the same thing you did.
