Possible to remove Chromecast? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I have a Chromecast at home which I use my nexus 7 with. I find it very annoying on my nexus 5 when I play videos the chrome cast button is always there.
Is there a way to completely remove it from my nexus 5? I never want to use Chromecast on my phone.

No it's not. "Chromecast" is a separate app for Android in the Play Store. Some other apps also support it (have it "built in") natively like YouTube but the Android OS itself/on its own, does not.

So why do we have the 'Cast Screen' option in the quick settings if it's not built into the OS?

Point taken, however, that is just (device) screen mirroring which was, up to and including KitKat, still "in beta". Now, of course, it is baked in to Lollipop but I would argue that it's not really the same as the full "casting" offered by the Chromecast support built in to Apps like Youtube or BBC iPlayer which send their stream at its native resolution and that the "Cast Screen" option in the drop down settings is a much lighter "load" on the OS than a full Cast (since it is only the device's native screen). So, why the OP feels the need to "remove it", I don't get?

1. Turn off your Chromecast
2. Get your phone off WiFi.
3.If your modem supports different bands, use default band for Chromecast, and another for your phone.
But seriously? A little button is that much of an annoyance?

[Q] Remote Control for TF300T?

Couldn't find it by searching but I was curious if there is some type of app that works as a remote control for the TF300T.
I just want something that works with a video player so i can pause, stop, play, etc videos. I don't need full functionality i just want something that works and I would considering paying for the app as long as it worked. Id love if they made an actual remote but i never have seen one.
Thanks.

You could install XBMC for Android and use any XBMC remote on another PC/tablet/phone.
Usually people use XBMC remote on the tablet to control their media PC, but there is no reason, why it should not work the other way around.

There's probably some VNC options as well.

Yes, exactly, should work like a charm. With a good remote you should even be able to browse the library with fanart, info, watched status, etc. For Android I can recommend Yatse, but there are lots of others.
Just need to make sure the firewall settings on your tablet allow the remote to connect, but that is a common issue for any kind of remote control protocol.

Hmm, not sure, where your problem is. XBMC for Android is a fully featured XBMC version with audio and video support. Can even pull live TV over the network, if you run one of the supported backends somewhere.
It is doing much more than just controlling mxplayer. It turns your tablet into a full multimedia box.
Oh, you might have to point XBMC at the directories, where your videos are stored. It does not use the Android media manager. Somewhere in the "Videos" tab you should find an "Add source..." item.
Hope this helps!

I installed xbmc server (host) -free from the play store on my tf300t. It says in the description of the app one of its limitations is "only supports music and cover art". So I can connect to the app but i can't quite figure out how to add directories in the server app. Guess I have to find the documentation. Appreciate the help.

Sorry, should have mentioned that the official XBMC for Android is not (yet) on the play store. Grab it from the XBMC web site. The latest Frodo version works well for me.

Maybe I could ask you if you know how to make the videos full screen from the xbmc app. It still shows the home and menu buttons of the tablet during playback. If I use mxplayer its full screen without issue. I went looking through the display menu but couldn't find what I needed.

Sorry, no idea. As videos typically have black bars anyhow, I didn't care too much.
I mean, even if the buttons are hidden, the video display does not get any bigger.

Live TV via HDhomerun on Nexus Player

Can someone who has the Player and an HDhomerun give this apk a try? This looks promising for live TV on the Player...

I tried this last night. It does not work - it just searched for channels indefinitely. Also in the thread there is talk of it not working anymore even on the ADT1. I guess changes to lollipop broke the app.

Well hopefully they get this worked out this is my main reason to buy this so I can ditch comcraps cable boxes
That was broken with changes to Android TV by Google. But give Silicondust some time, they are probably working on a fixed version.
As someone who got to play around with it a lot on my ADT-1, I can say it worked pretty good for a test app on a test build of android tv.

You can still do that without this. If you have an pc you can use as a pvr then there are xbmc addons that will enable you to watch/record live tv from the nexus player. Even better since you get pause/rewind as well, which I assume this app did not have given the lack of storage for live tv buffer on these devices.

SiliconDust VIEW app works outside TV Input
The latest update to SiliconDust's HDHomeRun VIEW app hit the Play Store on Friday. While it doesn't tune properly from within the TV Input Plugin on my Nexus Player, I can access my channels perfectly by launching the VIEW app itself (which has the same interface as on a tablet). While it's not showing up in the Play Store on the Nexus Player, you can install it from the web version of the store and it will show up properly in the leanback launcher.
The activity on their development forum for Android TV makes me hopeful that they'll have it sorted out soon. The changelog listed support for Android L and Android TV, but only stated support for the ADT-1. I assume some of the remaining issues may be having to do with ARM vs x86, but I don't have an ADT-1 so I can't be sure they don't have the same problems at this stage.
so if the apps works can you tell us does the video stutter when viewing hd channels?

Works on my hd homerun prime.

Do you have an AC router
I have a trebdnet AC 1900. Still stutters om HD from time tv time. It may be that the quad atom processor have more power than the amazon fire processor or it may be that it takes advantage of the AC speeds.
Yeah forgot that I have a usb ethernet adapter. Maybe that's why mine doesn't stutter.

I have a HDhomerun Dual. The View app works for me on Nexus Player. Seems like there's a little stutter in picture every now and again (unit is about 1 foot from an asus 68u). But may just be my imagination. Def better than on my Nexus 5 tho, which is practically unwatchable even 10 feet from the router.
Turns out the View app works for my Prime as well. The TV app only gives audio, and only on some channels.
Another app to try

If you can not get it to load email the developer and see if he can give you a beta so you can try it on the Nexus player. It is better than the HD homerun app on the market. It is called Tune N View it works if the Mysterious Nexus box plays MP2, MP4 and AC-2 audio if it does not support natively it does not work. It works on Minix 8 and other boxes that support those video and audio formats. If this does not work I will place my order of this box on Ebay and just return it and work with what I have. I called Nexus support and they could not tell me which video and audio formats this device supports, really? That's like buying a car and the dealership not knowing what engine it has. I am trying this although I have a fully rooted amazon fire tv which works great. I am hoping this device can deliver with this app and the following:
Root to install external hard drive
My nexus 4 has 16 gigs whats up with 8 gigs?
XMBC (just in case Tune N View does not work)
xbox 360 wireless control support
Hdhomerun App
Finally I was able to compare Nexus Player vs Fire Tv for usage with my homerun prime. I can say that it most be the combination of the Asus AC1900 that I got along with the processor which makes it work alot before with much less stutter then with the fire tv box. The one gripe I have with Nexus why provide much less video codecs support off the bat compared to google tv boxes like my sony box. Tune N View works great on Google Tv (one of the few apps I love on Google TV). Basically less stutter device has less power put they have the needed video and audio codecs. The developer is always involved and did I already mentioned that is better than the official Hdhomerun App. Nexus next time don't be cheap and have those video codecs you know that your getting a geeky crowd to buy these type of devices. Overall I believe I will keep this device now that the Hdhomerun is working better on this device. You can also use the DLNA support on Xmbc for viewing channels as well, FYI.
Can anyone make the Tune n View apk available.
With root & running LolliRock, the "No Carrier ASUS FUGU" aka Nexus Player, is not eligible to download the app via web, and I cannot seem to locate a legit apk to sideload.
Looking for this APK as well...

My NP is unrooted but I'm sideloading apps to try them out and I would love of copy of this apk as well. Can't seem to install or download from the Play store either. Thanks.
I'll be curious to see once the VLC for NP is updated to work with streaming over network. That could be a solid option as well.
Thanks.
Dan
I purchased an HDHomeRun Prime and it worked great for wired devices on my network. But it didn't work so great in my dualband 5g wireless setup. So that translated to an awful experience with my Nexus Player. I wonder if it is because it seemingly doesn't compress the Live TV cable stream out of the HDhomerun (mpeg or transport stream 'ts' output).
Instead of trying to load a usb wired network connection on my NP, I just sent the device back and got a refund. Great in theory, not so pretty in real world application.

Chromecast Screencast

Hello, I was looking to cast some of my games to my Chromecast as I can on my Nexus 7 and realized that the Chromecast app doesn't allow this on our phone. However, r3pwn has created an app that allows our Note 4 to screencast.
You will need root, the Chromecast app and the apk from r3pwn. I did not have to enable the Force-Close Fix or edit the system file mentioned for TouchWiz in r3pwn's thread (I couldn't even find that file on my device).
I have tested it on my DE and it works just as well as my Nexus 7 from the Chromecast app. However, I have not been able to get the QuickSettings Mirror option to work. It scans for devices but finds nothing. If I open the Chromecast app it finds my Chromecast right away and gives me the option to cast my screen.
Please be sure to thank r3pwn when you go to download this.

Google Cast Receiver, now separate app

If you are using your NP as Chromecast-receiver, be sure not to miss that Google has released that part as a separate app.

I had lots of app that didn't work casting to Nexus Player but worked to the original Chromecast but now they all work.
Can someone that understands this explain what would prevent any and every android device from becoming a cast receiver now that its a separate apk?

Care to elaborate? My Nexus Player is running this version of Google Cast already yet Vudu and Disney Movies Anywhere still don't "see" it as a device to cast to.

Screen Cast - Pixel 4a

Anyone tried screen cast without WiFi network to a Smart TV? If yes kindly help me with the way out.
Coz my counterparts can do it with every other phones ( Xioami, Samsung etc...) very easily. But the same is not possible as I found out that option is not available through pixel phones. Is that info correct?
Pretty much every phone and TV supports "MirrorCast".
But the Pixel 4a only support "ChromeCast", so it can only cast to a chrome stick or other chromecast compatible device (many TV's don't support chromecast)

I tried very hard to find a solution, but NG.
BEWARE, a lot of apps in the play store will "say" they will allow your phone to do mirrorcast, but ALL of them simply bring you to the "cast" settings in your phone, and most phones do support mirrorcast so it will seem like the app works. But on pixel phones, these apps will simply bring you to the chrome cast settings.
