M$ Exchange on WiFi only

I hail from the Pre so I'm kind of new to Android so I'm still getting used to this thing.
I noticed though that I can't receive/send emails from my Exchange account while on Wifi only when on my work WiFi. I can browse the internet, receive/send from Gmail, use Google Talk, install from the Marketplace and so on. Just not send/receive from Exchange.
At work I get zero reception so I have no choice but to be on WiFi only, again this is my company WiFi oh and this worked fine on my Pre.

That definitely needs to be checked.
Also... What do you have for server settings? An IP address or a hostname? If it's an IP address, is it one that can be routed to over the Internet? If it's a hostname, is it one that is resolved by public DNS servers?
There's a million different ways your admins could have your company email system set up. You're going to have to go into more detail to get this resolved.

My job does have a firewall but I am able to use the WiFi for anything and everything except Exchange on the Hero. I even receive emails from Gmail with no issue.
My server settings are pretty simple, it is a hostname that can be routed over the internet, and yes it is resolved by public DNS servers.
As I mentioned before it works on my Pre and my iPhone currently. And again there is no reception in this dungeon so I'm stuck on WiFi only. If I go outside and get off the WiFi I get a slew of emails from EAS.

Does the Exchange work on every other Wi-Fi and 3G? It only doesnt work when your on your work Wi-Fi? Just trying to clarify.

Sorry yes it works on 3G and any other WiFi besides work.

Your exchange email works when you're not at work, but doesn't work when you are there?
Does it work from a laptop on wifi when you're at work?
Sounds like one possibility is the DHCP servers at work are giving the phone a bad DNS config....

Ok, in that case, my GUESS is this.
Your internal network is named the same as your external network name.
In other words, you named the internal network mycompany.com as opposed to mycompany.local. Because of that, the DNS on your server thinks its the authority for that domain. If you look for mail.mycompany.com, it stops at the server and doesnt go outside. But your pointer for mail.mycompany.com resides on the ISP's DNS server.
Thats just a guess, and that would cause that issue on the internal network only.
EDIT: Computers and such inside the network wouldnt suffer the issue because Outlook is using the simple network name like MYSERVER or SERVER as opposed to the FQDN.
Did you make your network?

Does Android let us specify the DNS server while still getting the rest of the IP config from DHCP? I seem to recall trying to set that and not being able to without specifying the full IP configuration (hate that...).

Why could he not connect off another laptop? using the conection off the laptop to go wirelessly to the wifi? I did this with an xbox 360 before. I dont see why i t wouldn't work with a phone

well it seems it would considering 2 other phone work on his wifi... I'm thinking there is something with the phone its self that would need to be changed

The way to fix this is insert a pointer to the mail server FQDN in DNS on the server. Make an A record in DNS and point it to the IP.
I see this all the time with people that dont know how to make a server, they try www.mycompany.com and it wont work because they made the internal name the same as the external, if they dont host everything.
Anyway, I do believe this is a DNS issue, and it goes beyond the scope of the phone and this forum IMO.

If I access the mail server internally it something like server01 and externally it would be mail.mycompany.com <- this is what we've used in the past to set up EAS and it has always worked.

Agreed. It's really, really easy to set up a DNS server that works 99% correctly. Unfortunately, that means that lots of admins never spend the extra 10 minutes taking it from 99% to 100% correctly.
My apologies if my questions seemed odd, but I've learned through many long hard years in IT that it's better to ask end users questions they can answer, and then infer the info you need from that, than to just ask directly for the info and get a blank stare as a response....
Also, the reason for wondering if we could specify the DNS server was in an effort to find a solution *around* the misconfigured DNS, assuming he wouldn't have access to fix it properly... (Of course, that workaround would then depend on the company routers being configured correctly....)

Wifi problem in atrix 2 is very well known . I know cwm9 dev is in progress. So is there a way to install to replace the stock module/drive with cwm9 driver.
Or any goddamm way to resolve this wifi problem.
I am really frustated . This is my second replacement and I don't feel like sending it back.

I have had my a2 for about 2 months and no wifi problems here. It connects quickly and stays connected.

Not sure how "well known" this problem is. I have had my A2 since Nov 2011 and it has always connected to wifi without problem. Not disagreeing with you, just saying my experience with wifi is different.

ok ive had an atrix 2 for like a month, and I tried to flash an ad hoc enabler zip but it didn't work, and now my wifi won't work, it turns on for 5 secs and then turns off doesn't even show the networks available. help me pleeeeaaseee

just google for atrix 2 wifi problems ..
well i changed my wifi security to wpa2 .. and there has been some relief ..
the problem is still there .. but no frequent ..

I have solve the problem. What i did was just set the IP address for the Atrix 2 to static, instead of dynamic.

This is what I did as well. Make sure and scroll down in the advanced wifi settings page to include the DNS and netmask numbers as well as gateway.

Gingerbread didn't always play nice with dhcp, hence the reason a static ip helps resolve the problem. Another solution you can try is to check the lease time for issued ip addresses. Some devices running gingerbread had issues with infinite leases, so the solution was to simply change the setting on your router to renew leases. As long as the lease isn't set to "forever" any other value will work. Just wanted to put that out there for those who have trouble with intermittent wifi.

i have made extensive RnD on my phone .. from lease times to assigning static ip's .. nothing works .. most people won't notice disconnection when using static ips because it does'nt disconnect so frequently . you will notice when you make a 20 min video call...
I am thinking of installing supercharged rom .. what do you guys think .. can it solve the problem .. or since it is another gingerbread the problem will persist. ?

Most likely the dns address will be the same as your default gateway. An easy way to check is open a cmd prompt on your pc and type "ipconfig" and you'll see the default gateway, dns server, and subnet mask for your connected adapter. Just use the same settings, but give your phone a unique ip address.
Example
Default Gateway - 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
DNS Server - 192.168.1.1
IP Address - 192.168.1.101 < the last 3 octets need to be unique or else you'll have an ip conflict.

HTC One X Stuck on "Obtaining IP address"

My phone keeps cycling obtaining IP address without ever getting one on my home network. It has previously worked fine on my home network for a little over a month now and the problem suddenly started yesterday. No other devices on my WiFi network has the problem. Phone and router were rebooted, problem continues.
Any ideas?

That used to happen to me all the time on my Kindle Fire, particularly after flashing a new rom. The fix was setting the date and time to automatic, but that may not apply here.

I've found this happens too intermittently. It's a real pain. happened on a number of different custom ROMs.
other times it will say the network isn't in range, even though I know it is.

Depends on your network
DNS you get from your ISP, check router for it.
Prefix should be 24
IP whatever you set in the router ie 192.168.1.125
Gateway is whatever your router is ie 192.168.1.1
Google setting up static ip network it will help explain it and over at ddwrt they have pictures to help... very easy stuff. PM if you want/need help

You can try to turn off auto-DLNA..
It may causing device to configured itself under private ip range..

Same problem. Using stock rom. Tried static ip but not works.
This problem is a software problem? Or hardware?

This doesn't apply to my device now but on my previous HTC this would happen quite frequently I think it's more of a software bug then firmware it would seem that the drivers for the antenna are hit or miss

I had this issue and my phone wouldn't connect to any router "obtaining ip address" forever. Mind you my phone was 5days old, so took it right back to Rogers for a new exchange. My HOX is now perfect and connects to all wifi without issues.

Did you possibly enter the wrong spa password, then re enter it correctly and now you are having this problem?
If so, try this ... works on most Androids.
Click where it says obtaining IP address, the press "Forget"
Turn off Wifi.
Go Into Hone Settings > Power and disable Fast Boot.
Now power off the phone ...not restart.
Leave the phone off six minutes and not a moment less.
Then power up and try again.
Be careful to enter your wpa password correctly on the first try.
If still same problem try rebooting router.
Also consider installing SmartSync Disabler which can be found here on xda and at the google play store.
That app should solve the remaking wifi annoyance affecting these one x phones

the employer blocked the WIFI from employees (obtaining the ip address issue)
we cant access the WIFI in the hotel at where we work and although there are a password you put at the hotel's WIFI website but they did something lately to all of us and it is when any of the staff open the WIFI on his mobile it just keep showing obtaining IP address and no result so if you guys could help me in this and do i have to get a new phone or to try hiding my IP i tried a lot of apps but no way plz help

[NEED TESTERS] A Possible fix for AOSP Wifi

Alright I think the problem is AOSP has trouble setting an IP address for itself. That's why it takes a while to connect but when connected its solid (at least for me).
All this is done by getting on a PC connected to your WiFi and typing in your gateway IP address in the address bar (most likely 192.168.1.254).
Head to "Home Network" then "Advanced Settings". In "Device List" on the bottom should be a button saying "Edit Address Allocation" Click it.
Find your device (mine said android-a14242f6c57da641 but if you have more than one device then just find the IP of your phone and link it with the one in the list.) In the drop down menu "Address Assignment" set your phone as "Private Fixed: xxx.xxx.x.xxx" (You can pick a random one just make sure another device doesn't have the same IP).
Remember that IP address and click save at the bottom.
Now head to your phone and open up WiFi. Hold down on your Wifi's address and click "Modify network".
Set "IP settings" from "DHCP" to "Static". Scroll down and in "IP address" type in the IP you set for it on the PC.
Also make sure "Gateway" is set to your default gateway address (probably 192.168.1.254)
Click Save and turn WiFi on and off to test how fast you connect.
Whatever happens report back here. This is only a theory.

EDIT: I have two routers (one for each side of the house; there is no good central location). I set one to static and the other to DHCP, and the one set with a static IP definitely connects faster than the other.

I just tried what you described, and so far simply changing the IP on my phone to static fixes the problem.:victory: Then again, this is just right now. I will report back in time an let you know if it continues to work (I hope it does). Thanks for the fix, I really needed it and I couldn't find anything else.

I did this with my 2wire and it was a success. Connected right away. I'm running Viper XL 4.0.0 JB 4.2.2 with Beastmode Reloaded 3.5 which is AOSP based. I will monitor the performance and let you know.

Why am I getting this notification for the 1st time in approx 2 months that have got a OPO, despite that am connected to WiFi?

This sort of thing normally pops up when the WiFi network wants you to go to some sort of page, this is usually for a login to free WiFi hotspots, I assume this Dlink is your WiFi? Perhaps it wants you to open this page to change a configuration or login. This doesn't seem to be Android related at all but more to do with your router, could you try tapping on the notification and screenshot the page it opens, if any.

He's right. This looks like a router setting that you might have turned on like guest mode.

When I tap on it, G chrome takes me to 173.194.35.96/generate _204
Google results of this IP......173.194.35.96 which is Spy-IP.com
and Google has different results for this 173.194.35.96/generate _204
It never happened earlier in the past 2 months.
Been using the same OPO and same WiFi.
Any solutions to resolve it?

This is a router setting then, that page is some sort of login. Perhaps guest mode has been enabled on your router? Try this:
Settings>Wi-Fi>Modify Network>Show advanced options> Change DHCP to Static. Here, find the box that says Gateway and note the IP here. Now change Static back to DHCP and close this menu.
Go into the browser on your OPO and put in this Gateway IP, this will take you to the router config. The login for this is usually on the bottom of the router, otherwise the default can be found by searching the router model number, try finding a guest mode setting and turning it off - I really don't know... You can also change your WiFi name and password here if you like

Another strange thing all internet/WiFi related apps work fine including G Chrome and Mail in it but no GMail..........

Glad to hear, I am strongly advising against the factory restore. This is a feature of Android, although it is strange for it to be happening in this circumstance there is nothing it will achieve.

1. Changed router's password.
2. Guests mode is Off.
3. All apps working with WiFi except GMail and GPS.
4. Still see the notification.
5. Should WPS be Enabled, it is disabled at the moment?
6. You don't recommend a factory reset what about a re flash of 30 OR?

Your phone is working fine, it seems you have triggered some sort of bug in Android's WIFI login detection.
The system works by accessing DNS and check if the resulting IP is owned by google.com or some network-internal redirection/replacement by a login page.
Now, the IP 173.194.35.96 is owned by Google, so the DNS lookup obviously worked perfectly but for some reason the phone gets an unexpected answer from that server. Which makes me guess to one of the 2 following options:
a) one of the computers in your network is infected and Google keeps showing the "Prove you're human" captcha window on requests.
b) your provider is replacing failed DNS lookups with it's own "helper" page which for some reason is making Android trip. If possible, change the DNS servers in your router to either OpenDNS or Google DNS.

That's entirely your choice. However I would only recommend enabling it if it's the "Push to WPS" method and not constantly on - WPS is broken and depending on your router it takes between 1 to 10'000 attempts (1 second to ~ 2 hours) to break into your WIFI. Not good!
