[Q] Can't install non-market apps - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all. I've noticed since installing 5.0 on my Nexus 5, I can no longer install non-market apps such as the Amazon App Store, T-Mobile VVM, etc. Now, before I get a slew of replies about ticking the "install non-market apps" button, I've done that already. I've even factory reset the phone. When I try to install them, it's like the install button is unresponsive. Is anybody else having this problem? I could really use some help here, as I've lost Swiftkey, Swype, and a number of other apps due to this problem. Thanks in advance.

What are you using to download the apps? Have you tried clearing the cache in the package installer app? I can install my non market apps. So not a lollipop wide issue...but then there looks to be lots of issues that are only affecting some users so who knows.

Are you using some kind of screen dimmer app? Those apps use an overlay that interferes with the install button.

Exactly the same.
No issues with KK and unknown sources etc are allowed and yet with a root permission file manager etc I can no longer install apps. For example even Whatsapp PLUS when it updates and downloads a new version will start of the installation routine but I get as far as selecting install or cancel and the install button in not selectable. Manu ally installing the apk will result in the same thing happening.
Vanilla clean install of Lollipop and fully rooted and working. Rebooted etc still the same.
But take a look at....

How on earth did you ever figure that out?
Anyway thanks a ton. I am using twilight on kk and this has been bugging me a lot.

Power Control Widget Vanished

My Nexus S (i9020a) is running on Jelly Bean, and after recently uninstalling the beta of Apex Launcher and then reinstalling the stable version, I noticed that my Power Control widget was gone.
After I noticed that, I uninstalled Apex Launcher completely (cleared data for the app first to be sure). Still, the Power Control widget was no longer available on my phone.
For the time being, I have downloaded a third-party equivalent off of the Play Store, but I'd really like to know what happened here. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, is there any way to get it back?
App is called power toggle now in play store

Nope. That's a third-party app. The stock Power Controls Widget is nowhere to be found in the app store.
Hi
I'm on the Nexus 7 and have noticed exactly the same thing. This is the stock Android Power Control Widget. It was there with stock launcher and also with Nova Beta, but with Apex, its nowhere to be found.
This just happened on my GNex as well. I figure we're suffering the same issue. Mine vanished after trying out a few 3rd party ones strangely enough. I haven't found anything yet to fix it. Rebooting after an uninstall didn't help either. Any ideas, peeps?

Lol. What the hell? I'm using Widgetsoid for the time being, but this was totally random. I tried reflashing my stock ROM, pushing the launcher via ADB. Zip. Ziltch. Nada. Wonder what could be causing it...

Perhaps a full wipe is in order... But I can live without it for now
Word. I don't really care anymore. It's more of a nuisance that I can't find out why it did.
It becomes unavailable in the widget drawer? What if you on press an empty area on the desktop and select widgets, is it in that list?

No, no longer in the list (for me anyway).
Hi,
Just my 2 cents.... I'm not sure About JB but all other ROMs the app had to be on the phones memory for the widget to even be available or on the widget list.... so perhaps whichever file the power control is in, maybe it got switched over to SD card
Or
An App that was installed moved the files that are needed for that power control widget.
I know its a stab in the dark but ...
Good luck

Go launcher ex
Replace your launcher with GO LAUNCHER EX, free on the Play Store. It is the BEST launcher by FAR. Super fast, tons of options, always free.
Thanks but no thanks
Did a factory reset and Power Control widget is back (on stock launcher), stock N7 JB.
I figured that's what I would have to do to get it back. Thanks for reporting back with a fix .

No worries. Have posted the problem on the main Alex thread, but no comments on it. Also have emailed the Dev, so hopefully it can be resolved soon.

backup your data, and do factory reset maybe it can help to restore the control widget

Can't push install button (.apk)

Hello,
When I try to install an apk-file, I can't push the install-button. I found solutions like 'delete screenfilter' or 'uninstall lux,' but I don't have such applications. I also checked 'unknown sources.'
(The previous time I had this problem, I dissabled the 'keep screen on' option in Solid Explorer; that fixed the problem.)
Is there someone with a solution for this problem?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus (4.2.2 | ParanoidAndroid | franco.Kernel) using xda premium.
i had exactly the same issue on a few ocassions and every time it was solved by disabling the scree filter or un ticking the 'keep screen on' option like you've mentioned . Try clearing the cache of package installer too if you haven't already
if you are using paranoid android with halo, you need to disable halo when installing apks.
Had the same problem !! .. Disable holo and install app works like a charm !

I didn't know that... Thanks!
Just to add "droidmote" will cause this as well.
What if i may found another solustion?
Hello guys i had exactly the same problem with my sony xperia neo v on Touchwiz nature UX 2.0 V3. When i firstly booted into rom i installed a backuped apk it was cpu-z. I installed it. As a walkman app lover i found a way to install walkman. Also tried to install stock samsung keyboard from cwm without any results. I flashed also the xperia z keyboard. So much modding for a new rom . I tried to install my other apks but i had the problem. Rebooted but nothing. What I did? I saw you said about holo and screen filter apps. Then i went to see if i had any installed because in options i saw something named like that. I came up with the idea to clear the data of package installer, and then tried to install again. Everything works wonder now!
Thanks for the contributions here, this was really helpful. I was trying to install the Amazon Instant Video app and had this same thing. I had the Twilight app running but forgot about it. Disabled it, app installed fine! Thanks so much!
talkback
i found out that talkback may also be the problem
Maybe you are using a custom theme?
Suspicious! For me, Facebook messenger was doing it. First it blocked Tasker app and then it blocked me from giving accessibility permissions to it. What is Mark upto?!
I have the same problem from some time it's not by Facebook, come on!
I have no single app conneced with Facebook and have the same problem. But I do have a screen warming filter, and also option'keep the screen on' in Car Launcher settings. will try to disable them.
But I can press the Cancel button on the APK installer. Just when I press Install- nothing happens...
Very weird.
[Edit]
I disabled Bluelight Filter and everything got back to normal. Installing working fine again.

[Q] Home Screen problem

Hey everyone,
Sorry if this was before, I searched but couldn't find a similar problem. This started to happen after I uninstalled a music player app.
This "music player"-like shadow on the screen is annoying as hell. I can press the "Pause" button, but that's all. Everytime I lock the phone and wait a minute or two this appear. I wanted to install the app again, but I can't remember which one it was.
Is there any way to remove this..."thing"?
Thanks in advance.
What version are you running?
If it is 4.2 or above is it a widget?
Maybe go to Settings > Apps and look for the app that you uninstalled to make sure it is gone.
Im not really sure otherwise. Could possibly go to Play Store > My Apps and look for downloaded apps to reinstall and uninstall.

Found it, thank you! I searched widgets that looked like that "shadow" of mine and it was the 8tracks app I installed. As soon as I stopped it, the problem went away.
Thank you once again,
Cheers!
No problem, let me know if I can help with anything else

problems with autostarts ...

... not necessarily with the app "autostarts". here's my situation, fit a long time now I have had autostarts and startup manager installed with no conflicts out issues. I was also using clean master which was also fine, up until a little while ago when clean master introduced it's own autostart feature. at one point I mistakenly hit the boost button and it automatically blocked all my apps from autostarting. after that periodically my running apps (like tasker, lmt launcher, glovebox, lightflow, battery widget reborn, etc) would close down. at first it would only happen after an update to clean master, but kept getting worse and worse, like each time I'd unlock my phone. went into autostarts and enabled all apps one by one to autostart. uninstalled autostarts and startup manager as I figured they were causing conflicts. was fine again for a while until I launched clean master. I'd like to be able to use clean master but not if it makes my phone unusable. any help please.

Lag in recent apps overview

I'm on a Pixel 3 XL with the latest Android update (not rooted, no custom ROM, or anything like that). I am using Nova Launcher. When I try to switch to a recent app, there is a long lag time. It doesn't happen all the time, but it happens more often than not.
In the video link below, I have the "show taps" on so you can see what is going on. I clear all the recent apps. Open just 4 apps. And then try to switch to the most recent app. I tap two times, and nothing happens. But the screen is not frozen since I can still scroll through the recent apps. I tap one last time and there is still no response. And after a while, the app finally opens.
Is this a common issue on Pixels. Is there anything that can improve this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It's a pretty common issue with third party launchers. Try using the stock launcher to see if the issue persists

Tried it with the stock launcher and it did not happen. This is super frustrating. Pixel phones are becoming iPhones now, limiting our choice. I don't know how they haven't fixed this issue yet, despite having Android 10 out for so long.

It has to do with everything being built into the launcher now, including animations. If it makes you feel better this seems pretty much completely fixed in Android 11. Are you rooted? There is a magisk module that fixes this completely on Android 10 as well.
Edited to add: it's called quickstep switcher I believe in case you're wondering

Thanks! I'll look into it. This is the first phone I haven't rooted or had a custom ROM on, mainly because of the ease of monthly OTA updates. But now I am leaning towards rooting. I'll have to research a bit about how to deal with monthly updates while rooted.

Root it but keep the old boot image. Flash the original boot image before taking the OTA. Then download the fastboot files for the new OTA from the Android site, patch that new boot image and flash that.
Feel free to PM me anytime you need any help, I'll even patch the boot image for you if you like.
