I'm contemplating upgrade options (from my Droid Razr), and noticed something about the one m8 that I wanted to ask about.
On the home screen, the button 'bar' (for lack of a better term) is transparent, but in some (maybe all?) apps (like the browser), the buttons get a black background. This change is jarring. Is it possible to have that background be transparent all the time? Particularly without root or unlock, as I'm sure it'll come with 4.4.4 on it already.

Not that I'm aware of. You could probably get into the build.prop and decompile apk and make some adjustments and recompile and flash but I don't know exactly where you would need to go to change that setting. But in order to do that you definitely need at minimum root

Took me way longer than it should of to do this (I am no graphic artist/designer), but I wanted it. For stock rosie only. Does not show up well against a dark background. I still want to improve it for the button presses, but it's a start.
new version, with better (now cyan) button presses!

screenshot?
Sorry about the lack of screen shot, was in a hurry. Here ya go.
By the way, this will not change your task bar or mess up your live wallpapers with sense or change anything else.
edit: I haven't tested, but in theory this should replace espresso to look like this, since I used trev's stock rosie replacement as a learning tool. so credit to trev for his help, even if he didn't know it.
So I can see that the stock jog dial images are in there... does anyone know the xml file which tells the phone to use the zz_moto files instead of the stock ones? I would like to
remove the moto files and make it use the default ones because I think moto's are ****in' UGLY!

I'm not too sure. This is just a shot in the dark which probably has no chance of working but..if you're backed up and/or have means of restoring to at least a stock build...do you think maybe just a simple name switch for the png's could work (ie rename the stock joggers to "zz_moto")? I know this has a good chance of failing but hey you never know...
Yeah - I thought about that. I bet it will work. I was just hoping to get rid of the excess images altogether, to keep in theme with deblurring my phone .
I guess i'll give it a shot Friday though. (Won't have time until then)
Hmm.. the jog dials were used for the rotary lockscreen... wonder can I modify the android.policy.jar to get that back...
That'd be cool, but I think we're talking about different ones.
I'm talking about the jog dials jog_tab_bar files.
Yeah.. I'm thinking of the jog_dial_*etc*
Renaming them to zz_moto should do the trick. Might want to open them up and verify size and position of the .9 pixels though.
about size and position... so basically I should overlay them and see if the black border things line up?

yeah, and just edit as needed. recompile, then throw it in the apk or use ninja.
upon actual inspection, it looks like the files aren't exactly the same (in which files there are, and what they mean semantically)
Grr.. I really hate the stupid moto sliders.
There's gotta be a way to modify the XML files to make the screen like stock.
So I'm curious about looks vs. functionality
Each one of my little drawings here satisfy both.
First off, I apologize for being a retard and using cam scanner to make these images sideways (although they were right side up originally).
Seeing as I can't attach images directly from my phone onto this site, I had to email them to myself, download them and then re attach.
Also another retard thing, I made a home button (app) thing on both of them even though there is a physical one on the phone itself.
Have a look
Also clarify with me which is which (theme or ROM).
How hard is it to design/engineer this and actually have everything function properly?
Theme/ROM 1
Them/ROM
it looks like you want to pull the whole status bar to the bottom of your phone. i didnt think you could just move that stuff around. a Dev would would be able to give u a yes or no.
im leaning more towards a theme than a Rom. but you can only theme what the Rom has. and NO rom has that, that i know of. so its like a combination of both.
Those drawings appear to be a significant layout overhaul, a la Sense and Touchwiz
It would either be:
1) a full-blown ROM
2) A replacement for a number of system apps (but could be an add-on), at the very least the launcher and probably the lockscreen
More than just basic theming, that's for sure.
Well it certainly gives the phone a neater, "in my opinion more efficient" functionality.
The one with the radial app dial, that spins, (you guys probably could tell that already) can fit either 7 or 8 apps.
When you press the home button the phone app automatically aligns directly above the said home button (non physical assuming there are 7 apps not 8).
The apps that go on the radial thing-a-ma-jig are your primary apps.
However since that non-physical home button is not needed, then the phone would be in the center or perhaps you'd like the browser.
In any case whichever app you use most extensively (ie #1).
I certainly cannot do any of the ROM creating but I was hoping to spark interest with the ones who are able to do so with ease.
The one with the triangle side bars (next image) these have 1-3 icons on them, when you tap that icon the first time a box will come up over lapping everything else in the background (or with slight opacity) and that gives you more detail rather than just an icon.
I think it would be neat as hell if this was done.
So is it like, theme = aesthetics ; rom = function
In this case I'd like to do both.
Also the capability to assign any app in that 7-8 slot (radial) would also be nice.
Perhaps done through the command prompt.
This is a feature I picked up from a blackberry (ability to assign any icon to a specific design/theme).
Thanks for the interest, I'm going to try and fix the orientation.
Some of what you're looking to do (the home-dial concept) may be doable without any ROM development at all - after all, plenty of launchers are installable as apps and what you're describing there is a launcher concept.
Notification bar moving could be a lot harder though.
FYI I'm a kernel guy not an app developer, so I can't help you much other than say that I'm fairly certain one of the features you want to implement can be done as a launcher app for any ROM.
Alright alright, we're sifting through sonething here.
I have very little knowledge od 'kernel' 'launchable' 'rom' as far as developing them goes. Are there tutorials ? (search bar probably)
Thanks for your contributions
What about color (borders keys etc)
Nice drawings man

Hey thanks DevilDogAK
It's one thing to draw the idea by hand but to actually create it with code...
That's where the tires hit the road one might say.
I need to do some reading to get an idea of what I have to accomplish.
Thanks for the interest, as always it starts with a dream
I'll let you guys know whats up when I actually get to the point of dev
But team work goes a long way (hint hint hint)
sweet... great concept imo, & hey, cyanogen started with just a concept. wish i knew more to help you out, but we're with you in spirit nice drawings too lol

About the launcher comment, does having two mean more computing power needed to run the first and second launcher or can I just do one primary launcher?
If I can just move things around, what about putting some notification components under the wheel? Components such as the wifi toggle and the data image or perhaps the data and battery.
Anyone smart enough to do that probably isn't dicking around on XDA. You never know though.
Well... I'm here
Haha just kidding, I do wish somebody with some experience knowledge (ie developer of Serendipity etc... ) a man can dream... a man can dream.
Dear all
Apparently it seems that nobody (on different smart-phones threads and also here on Galaxy Notes) knows how to change the default background from annoying black (very bad for my ageing eyes) to a more traditional and relaxing white or light colour (as for iPhone). I mean the background for
- general settings
- phone
- contacts
etc.
Can somebody please share his ideas?
thank you

Some more details:
My device is a galaxy notes GT-N7000
Android version 2.3.6
Baseband: N7000XXKL8
Kernel: 2.6.35.7.N7000XXKK9-CL725676
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XXKL8
As I am NOT a techie, I would appreciate very much some automated solution. For example, to download and install a force-white-background-theme or some 3rd party application to do the job (paid apps are OK).
Thank you again
Saulo
I've not heard of an app or script that can do that, but the MIUI Rom (available under the android development section) has black text on white background.
Thank you Holgalee.
I still cannot find that link for that ROM, can you please point for me?
2. Do I need superuser?
Thank you again
Saulo
Just in case you didn't know, AMOLED uses less battery when displaying black than it does when displaying white, because the pixels are "off" in black and "on" in white. I suspect that's why black is the default.
I know, but for my eyes the black background it is really no more bearable. too streessful..I prefer to have my battery drained up earlier but be able to use this worthy device.

Here's a link to the MIUI ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521630
I think I may start using it myself once it integrates the new s-pen functions from the premium upgrade by Samsung!
Thank you James.
I am downloading and then feedback.

That MIUI ROM does have white background, but I lose some very useful hardware functions, like camera at 1920 30fps, etc. So I cannot use it.
I heard that there are simple scripts, to switch/invert background from black to white.
But my question is: I am on a Mac Air. Can I use adb and odino and other tools on Mac Lion OSX?
Or do I need a virtual Windows machine?
Please can someone post a tutorial for Mac users?
Thanks a lot
Saulo
If you are stock you are going to have to root first and then use PC Odin to flash the repack because MIUI is ICS. Read about it in the development forum and it will show you everything step by step.
I have windows 7 on boot camp on my mac just for the purpose of using Odin. Mobile Odin, in the market, might work, but might cause SODs too.
Hallo Andrew.
I do have Windows parallels on my Mac air. If I understand correctly, on Mac Lion OSX there are NO tools available to flash and modify our Galaxy Notes. Right?
2.
Do you have some hints on how to perform a script, on galaxy notes, to change the background on most applications, such as:
- general settings
- SMS
- phone
- MMS
etc
Thank you a lot
Saulo
Just so you know, blacks will not only save (marginal) battery juice, but most importantly, it saves your AMOLED screen from dying a premature death!
AMOLED screens suffer from a phenomenon called by some as "Burn-In" so blacks became a standard (specially on the notification bar) ever since Gingerbread (or was it Froyo?) came along with AMOLED based phones (starting with the Google NEXUS One)
You can search on Google about this AMOLED problem.
That's why there is a setting in the default web browser to dim the screen or even invert the colors on the browser, to save juice and to protect the screen!
Yep! Just like those old projection TVs of the eighties!

Thank you Rayan.
I now understand...how, in fact, could everybody accept such a ugly and tiresome black background? If what you say is correct, I have to give up my search for a whote or light colour background...
By the way, (off topic): is incoming ice cream sandwich also sporting a black background?
When do we expect an official stock release?
Thank you again
Saulo
When you guys like i can port a theme in white/red.

Actually ICS AOSP is even more black, however, it has lots of blue which is known to degrade even faster than any other color on AMOLED screens! Go figure!
Cheers

Guys these changes you discuss here are very very difficult to be done and they need a lot lot of work..
I know cause in my Mixed Theme for Desire HD (my previous phone) i had inverted a lot of stuff (as HTC uses white backgrounds and i wanted them black), with the help of another Great Themer he_stheone...
So it's not a script that has to be run...
You must de-compile all framework apks and many others apks...
Then you have to find inside the code (xml files) of these apks the values that refer to background color and change it to white...
But then you will have a lot lot of trubles, as you should also change the color of text from white to black, so you will be able to read the texts all over the phone (settings, popup windows, contacts, sms etc...) and this is the most difficult part as you have to find and change the color of the text in several apps that conflict with the frameworks...
And even if you manage to find and change all the texts to white color, then it begins another problem... The 3rd party apps that you download from the Market... Cause many of them might use f.e your default background (black) with it's own text color (again black)...
I'm not say it's impossible, but i say it's very difficult, it nedds a lot lot of time and very good knowledge... And i don't know if someone that has the knowledge, also has the time to do that...
So another solution is to sell your Note and buy an HTC ONE X, cause HTC uses white backgrounds with black texts
Thank you. That is exactly what I was thinking...so basically HTC does NOT use amoled, right? So it can implement the phone on whute background.
Is this correct?

HTC is not the only one with LCD screens, in fact AMOLED screens are lowest denominator out there.
I really doubt that some company would bother to change the look and feel of Android, but if you root you can go with MIUI which uses a lot of whites (reminiscent of iOS) then you'll be closer to what you are looking for, but as someone mentioned before, apps would still be as the developer intended, either black, white or whatever.

I totally agree with you sir.
I'm 26 but the black/ dark backgroudn is stressful and annoying in the long run.
Google's own apps do have whtie/ light background themselves e.g. Gmail, Google Maps etc.
I don't understand why Google don't enable us to change the background to white/ light.
A not-too-technical but not perfect solution is 1. to install a launcher e.g. Nova or Apex and 2. to install a theme that has white background (which I don't know and I'm asking around as there are thousands of them).
The system stuffs e.g. Settings will remain black though.
As for specific needs e.g. contacts, we'll have no choice but to use alternative e.g. Contact Plus app.
Good luck sir, I'm on the hunt for Nova/ Apex launcher themes with white-background

Im considering upgrading my Z5C, but I see f.ex small apps are missing, and Im so depended on them in my everyday life. I´ll really miss all of them, but I think the hardest one to let go of would be the Notes. The possibility to wuick open a note and write, and then safe it so it stays in the notification bar. I need to make To dos and reminder notes all the time at work and private life so need to have have easy access plus have them "in my face" for reminding me (no, dont want a widget on the main home screen since I want and need that cleaned from stress, haha, and swipe for home screen arnt in my face enough as when its in the Notification bar with the Small app Notes.).
So, Im woundering if anyone think Small apps will come back? Or know of any good apps to replace my Small app need?

I wish they could come back.
Actually the only replacement that I know is to open two apps on the screen which is possible on the new xperias.
Good luck
yes , I believe that the multiwondows option is way better than the small apps .
