Encrypted phone. Can I flash? - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I encrypted my rooted s5 after flashing Moar 2.2. Is it possible to run a tar to update the firmware without losing all of my data? Can I switch Roma or even update Moar when he drops the 4.4.4 release? Did I screw myself?

Root for KitKat AT&T

Is there root for AT&T 4.4?
No there is not but in the at&t thread there is already a way so you can be rooted and have custom recovery

Yes.

There is no way to root kitkat on any device without either unlocking the bootloader or reverting to a root able build of Android first.
Flashback
I've been looking into rooting the D80020 and I think you have to flash back to D80010 (for ATT) then you can root and (possibly) update to Kit Kat. I haven't done it yet but planning on it soon.
I just did that 2 days ago. Flashed back to 10d, rooted, flashed twrp with freegee and then flashed stock kk. All told, took me about half an hour. Now I'm rocking rooted kk, couldn't be happier with the phone.

I used the same thing for root. Cant use a custom recovery though, but since I just got the phone yesterday I'm cool with using stock for now.

use ioroot25 to root.
Then install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.shell.freegee_free and install TWRP.
reboot into recovery and install the rom.
Before doing anything download the rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2672931 and copy it to your phone.

[Q] updating 4.3.3

I've heard about a android 4.3.3 update coming but I've rooted my Nexus 5 recently so I'm still kinda new to all this. I was wondering I would update to this when it comes out while keeping my Kernal and all that good stuff. Thanks!
read the stickies, the ota one will tell you all you need to know. As for me, I'm rooted, stock kernel, and custom recovery. I plan on flashing the next update in recovery.
also why do you want to downgrade to 4.3.3? when launched last november, this phone shipped with 4.4.

Don't be a ****. He obviously meant 4.4.3
Same. I am rooted with framework. So I uninstall framework from the app. Put flash file on nexus 5. Boot into recovery and flash as normal? Do I need to clear data and will I lose root?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
There's no need to wipe data. And, yes, you'll loose root, so just need to re-root it again
So I just flash on top of it? And would it not be hard to re-root because it's a new android version?

Once you're updated, you just need to flash the supersu zip again to gain root access.. No, it shouldn't be hard to re-root!

Going back to 4.4

Phone is s-off, did the firmware update and then flashed a 5.0 Rom. If I want to go back to a Kit Kat Rom what is the process? Can I just wrote and then restore my kit Kat android? Then wipe and install new Rom? Or do I need to run RUU for kit Kat?

The 5 bootloader should be fine with a KK rom. I went back to 4.4 CleanROM with no problems. I did format /data in TWRP though before reflashing the KK rom
Thanks. Thinking about going to CleanRom 3.0 after being unable to find the cause of the issue I am having.

6.0.1 Update Root?

I'm currently on stock, rooted 6.0 32.1.A.1.185 and received an update on my phone yesterday to update to 6.0.1.
I assume if I proceed with the update I will lose my root, is this true? I froze the Updater so I could get the notification to go away. What's the most straight forward way to keep root and get the update. I haven't seen anyone post a stock rooted rom with the update to flash over what I currently have.
Thanks
Yes, this won't work.
Use a rooted tft or custom Rom.
Xpower v3.0 is great.

Cool, thanks. Anyone knows if the installer wipes data? I will probably just do a fresh install but I might not if I don't have to.
Yes, backup to SD card
Do a factory reset and fresh install.

Updating using MM OTA from rooted stock LP ROM

I'm running rooted LP stock with TWRP recovery. My phone downloaded the MM system update. Is it safe to use the automated MM install? I'm not worried about retaining root or custom recovery capabilities.
Thanks
It won't install with the custom recovery. You may as well just install the very latest ROM KDZ with LG UP, and then you'll be all up to date. I believe it's posted in one of the update threads
Sent from my LG-H901 using XDA-Developers mobile app
You will lose root if you use the latest kdz right?
Sent from my LG-H901 using XDA-Developers mobile app
You do lose root and will be completely stock. I haven't read enough of the other threads to know if the latest is actually rootable yet or not.... I've seen conflicting reports. It does appear that you will. hard brick if you try to roll back tho! It's a one way road
