Nexus player for noobs. How to get apps on the device. - Nexus Player General

So I know a lot of people out there will think this is dumb. But for me there was a wonderful realization. I kept reading about using Chainfire solution to getting apps on to the device. I thought I would have to adb push apps to the device as I couldnt find the apps I wanted on the play store on the player. While I was adding some games to my sons tablet I saw the nexus player listed as a device. You can download directly to the device from any browser that will let you access the play store.
Then go to settings on the player then go to apps and you will find and open them there.Someone on xda explained this to me earlier as well and I don't realize that it was this easy.

The method I'm using is installing an app to my phone than pulling the apk from /data/app/ than using adb install name.apk
Haven't found another way yet

I haven't used the ADB, but rather the first method or yours using ES Explorer instead of ADB. I move the apk's to google drive and then from the np launch ES Explorer and install.
It is far easier to use any brower on a desktop select an app at the google play store and install to the nexus player. Done.

what i did
I figured i would throw in my 2 cents.. First thing i did was install this sideload app launcher.. from the play store from chrome on my phone.. it is sent straight to the NP..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.tv.sideloadlauncher&hl=en
This will show up in the list of apps on the main screen of the NP.. And then show all your apps stock and sideloaded..
Then ES file explorer. Again straight from the play store from chrome on my phone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&hl=en
Then you can do all kinds of things.. ES has a webbrowser in it.. i downloaded xmbc from http://kodi.tv/download/
put in google drive and then opened ES File on the NP went to cloud and added my Google Drive account.. Downloaded and installed from there.
Last thing i did last night because i had a few apks on my phone and it was taking some time to upload to drive and then download to the NP.. i used the ftp tool on ES on the NP and was able to push the apk straight to the NP from my phone.. 40mb apk took 20 secs..

[Q] Application to copy from PC and paste to phone

is there any app for copy-paste from PC to phone and vice versa?
for example, I found some interesting article in my PC, and I want to copy some part of it to my phone.. I could've send the file via bluetooth, email, or USB connection.. but I think it'd be very neat to just copy the text (not the file) from your PC and paste it on your phone..
or in the opposite direction, I received an interesting SMS from my phone and I want to copy it to my PC..
is there any app like that?
I know that the app Chrome to Phone together with a plugin in either Chrome or Firefox on the computer does exactly that! However I don't know if there's in the opposit direction.

Well this is not an app but at some point I stumbled across this url:
http://qrcode.kaywa.com/img.php?s=8&d=
If u add some text at the end and submit the url u get QR to scan with Barcode Scanner that'll get u the text on ur phone...
Example:

It's though 2.2 only and it doesn't work with lower versions of Android because it is a new API.

it's okay.. I'm using 2.2, but I'm from Indonesia.. I've downloaded from the links above, though..
Hmm then it's strange that you don't find it. It's my first entry when searching on Chrome to Phone.
It's not the latest version but a google search resulted in this thread with an apk-file.

Download ES file explorer. You can add your computer as a lan drive (over WiFi) then any folders that are shared can be viewed on your phone. you can copy any file over. i have apks on my computer. If i view them with ES file explorer it coppies them to my phone then installs them. i also transfer music over this way. It might even work the other way if you change the folder permissions on the computer

wow.. I'm not using WiFi.. I'm using bluetooth instead, and it works really well! shared a folder on my laptop and copy-paste from and to phone in that folder.. neat!
Dropbox.
Just install it on your pc, sign up for an account (it's free but you can pay for upgrades to storage size) and install the app on your phone. Tada! Any file you put into your Dropbox folder is downloadable via the Dropbox app. It works both ways!
Edit: Oops just read your entire question. Hm well I guess you can use dropbox but then for your purposes you'd have to copy paste said text to a note app and then upload the note file to dropbox..Can't think of a more direct way.
Maybe you can find an app that has Google Docs integration. Either way you need an internet connection.

I use this all day.
I have a text file and folders that I just edit on my pc and I have it directly here on my iPhone, bb and android phone. It's the best app I've ever used. I have shares folders with friends and I can share files and pictures with them directly from my phone and then it also shows up on my pc the next time I turn it on. It's fantastic.

that sounds cool

So I figured out a round about way to get apps from the market.

There were a few apps I wanted on my new gtab that I couldn't seem to find on the market after flashing the latest VEGAN rom since google filters apps according whatever device you are using to view the market. It was kinda driving me nuts since I have a few on my phone I wanted on my gtab. Then I remembered Astro File Manager allows you to "backup" apps you have on your device. In my case I have a Droid X and I wanted Yahoo Messenger but the market on the gtab wouldn't show it. So I downloaded and installed it on my Droid X via the market. Went to astro file manager backup tool and chose yahoo messenger and the video plugin. Backed it up. Astro saves all backed up apps to a folder on your sd card called backup. From astro i send it to my dropbox which I sideloaded before hand on the gtab. It makes it easy to send the files to the gtab. I know there are sites with alot of the freeware from the market, but if your like me I don't trust sideloading my apps from some random website and much prefer getting mine from the app market to insure it is as safe as it can be. Then this is an easy option. It works on any rom stock or custom. You can also setup an ftp server if you don't want to use dropbox. The stock rom has the ability to access ftp sites with the stock files manager ES File Explorer. Needless to say I have yahoo messenger + video chat working great on the tab. Be aware some apps I have tried simply will not work on the gtab unfortunately. If anyone found this helpful let me know, and if anyone needs more detail or a step by step guide let me know and I will write one up.
You can do the same thing with Titanium backup.

[Q]Best free music download app on Android

I'm wondering what app ppl are using to download mp3's on theory android devices. I've been using gtunes but am starting to see it not finding mainstream music. Also not thrilled with its permissions.
What's the best app for downloading free music?

Any input would be great, Thx

I doubt you will get too much help with that here, seeing as most of those apps are legally questionable... not sure that helps

Thanks, i used to use that too. I have been using gtunes but i think more often than not it doesnt find what im looking for, which is mainstream. I have since downloaded "Free Music Download" (orange icon white headphones as the icon) and it works better.
I've discovered a method of using the web browser xscope to download the music files via mediafire or megupload. In Google type, site:mediafire.com (artist name) (album name). Packages usually come in the form of .zip or .rar files but also as .Mp3 for single files. Pick the link of the files you want and allow it to finish downloading. You will need a .zip and/.rar expander to reveal the .Mp3 files in the album. I use the app, android zip.UnzipLite and unrar, both found in the market. You will need to navagate your SD card to find the files located in the xscope download folder with one of the two applications. Place files into the media/audio folder on your SD. I hope you guys try this out it works quite well for me and never really have to worry about syncing to get a new album on my phone.

[Q] Download Files From Google Drive

Hi ,
I uploaded some pictures on my Gmail Drive yesterday via Laptop.
When I use the Android Google Drive Client on my Gingerbread , I have options of viewing it or making it offline.
Is there any way of downloading the pictures to my SD card ?
Making it offline doesn't help because once I remove the Google Drive App from my Droid , I will no longer be able to view that picture.
I want a permanent download so that my downloaded pictures appear in my gallery even after un-installation of Google Drive.
EDIT: [SOLVED]
Disable encryption via settings, and the files are accessible in the below folder. Thank the man

The files seem to be in the google docs application folder, which on my system is found in /mnt/sdcard/Android/Data/com.google.android.apps.docs/files/pinned_docs_Files_do_not_edit/*CRAZY FOLDER NUMBER*
However, viewing the files does not work. It seems that this is a feature they have not included (for whatever reason).
Dropbox lets you export files.
You could also try another service called "Box".
KeePassDroid with Google Drive
I was going to create a new thread but in searching found this one. I'll use this one as maybe it applies with certain features not yet being implemented? Or am I overlooking or doing something wrong? I'll keep this simple. I use KeePass V1.x and KeepassDroid to keep my passwords in sync. It works great with DropBox. I have my database stored in the cloud and whenever I make a revision, it syncs across all my devices. Being the Google Whore I am, I was excited to try it with Google Drive. NO GO!
I can access the file and open the database with KeePassDroid without any issues. If I make a change and try to save it I get the following error. /data/data.com.google.android.apps.docs/cache/filecache2/123456789/databasename.kdb.tmp: open failed: EACESS (permissions denied). It won't let me write back to the database like DropBox will.
When I made the file available off-line, it would let me save the file, but it would not save that file back to the cloud. Do you think it's a permission issue on my side, or a limitation right now with Google Drive? Quick side note: I'm using a ported version of ICS but not really having any other issues. But if others are able to write back with a 3rd party app, then maybe it is something to do with the port....just a thought? If anybody has any ideas....Thanks!

It *seems* to me like a limitation with their software. The fact that you can't even use the files outside of google drive/docs despite them being there indicates that either the files are encrypted, or in some other non-standard format. Uploading probably doesn't work because the file you put there are in the wrong format for the software to use them.
I switched back to Dropbox (which I never REALLY left) because of this. As a way to move files to your phone (like .zips to flash), Google drive falls short.

Glad to see this thread. First thing I did was try to copy a file to my SD Card from Gdrive. Just keeps trying to open them. Only option I had was send to Dropbox from Gdrive and export from there. Kind of a waste of time.
Just wait and see what features they add on. Its still very early.
Is your phone rooted? Using ES file explorer, and having the "up to root" toggle enabled, if I went to the root directory /mnt/sdcard/download directory all of the 4 files I synced with google drive were able to be copied using ES file explorer without any problem at all.
It's a bit annoying, but for now it works for me!

I could copy them no problem. The problem is, copied or not, they're unviewable.
Are you sure you are looking in the folder I mentioned, or are you looking in the folder that does not require root access? There is a link to those files in the directory that doesn't require root but even the thumbnail doesn't appear there.
Shrug, I pulled photos and a pc executable from that folder and copied it onto my SD card using the move option in ES file explorer which allowed me to email them to a friend.
How to enable Google Driver on my phone ?, i have download from Google Play but it's display not available in my country, hmm
When I went to the drive.google site after I installed the PC application it gave me a url to download the mobile app. I made sure "install non-market applications" was selected in my phone settings, opened up that site in my phone's browser, and installed it.
So I seem to have managed to get files from google drive onto my phone and tablet. I use an app called officesuite pro. I've got it on my prim and sgs2. It is a paid app but it connects to remote servers, google docs(drive), dropbox etc. If you access your files through there, you can copy the file, doc, zip whatever is on your google drive, and paste it to a local drive. All intact and usable.
This is crazy. As soon as my Drive was ready I transferred all my DB files to it thinking I'm all Google, so lets use it! Yeah, I can't access any of my files. With DB I could just long press a name, and download. Guess it's back to DB until Drive can do it too. Nice otherwise.

Yeah, it works with any type of file, I used it to download a zip. You can do it with jpegs too but you have to make it show unsupported files. Also, another way, probably easier is to log into google drive through your browser, you can download direct from there i've noticed. Just click on the file and it should give you the option to dl. Shame they haven't put this in the app.

Funny I was just trying this. It does work, but it renames the file to some long weird label. Have you found a way to keep it the same name?
To be honest, i've not really tried it through the browser but when I download it through officesuite pro, it retains the original file name.

Unable to download or save any APK on my OnePlus One

I'm having a very strange problem with my OnePlus One running OxygenOS 1.0.2 (Android 5.0.2). I am trying to install the Amazon App store on the phone, but I've tried downloading it from Chrome, Opera, Firefox, ES File Explorer, and even tried transferring over the apk using Airdroid and it just won't do it. Download fail, transfer fails, immediately. I have over 14 gigs of free space on the phone, so it's not a space issue. I can transfer other files, such as pictures and documents, but apk's, even zipped, it just won't do it.
Is there some kind of built in security feature of Oxygen OS that is preventing me from saving APK files to my phone? If so, how can I disable this.
Thank you in advance.
