[Q] How to make Nav Bar Smaller - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, Im currently on 380 dpi and still feel the nav bar is using too much of my screen. I was wondering if you were able to Make it thinner without the use of gravitybox or reducing the DPI. Cheers

Use a custom rom, they have this feature to change the size. Or manually do it but that requires you to get your hands dirty and to recompile the files which there is a guide online on how to do this.
Google search for the guide.

Plz don't make me learn how to decompile just to remove NavBar!

I've got a Razr Maxx HD running rooted but stock JB 4.1.1. All I want to do is remove (hide, disable, etc) the Navigation Bar that takes up the bottom of the screen. I'm a Button Savior guy so I've got a way to navigate without wasting that screen real estate.
I tried adding the line qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 to the bottom of my build.prop file (that worked great on my Nexus 7, BTW). That removes the NavBar but the wallpaper only covers part of the recovered screen area (the rest is either black or some other screen "bleeds" through) and it generates system.ui errors constantly.
I've tried several apps from Google Market (can't stand the name Play Store) but they all hide the Notification Bar on the top, too, and I want/need to see that.
I downloaded and installed an APK that was supposed to address this (can't find the file or remember the name) but all it did was automate adding the extra line to build.prop, resulting in the same problems.
I don't want to flash a custom ROM because, despite brilliant work by amazing devs, some of the still-missing features (camera, tethering, etc) are ones I need to have.
I use and like Go Launcher EX but I'd use another launcher if any of them had the feature to hide the NavBar but evidently none of them do.
The one thing I keep reading is that, if I decompile my frameworks-res.apk file, I can change a series of values that will make the NavBar disappear. I've read the instructions over and over and I just don't have confidence that I won't screw something up while trying to do this.
Is there ANY relatively straight-forward tool or app or setting that I've missed to get rid of the NavBar?

qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 in build.prop works fine for me I don't have any of the issues you mentionned

Really? Interesting. Do you have a stock ROM rather than CM10 or ParanoidAndroid or something like that (many custom ROMs make it easier to do the modify build.prop method)? Are you on 4.1.1 rather than a newer version of JellyBean (4.2 it out in some places, I believe)? If the answers to both those questions is yes, what did you use to root? I'd love to solve the problem and I hope to avoid decompiling and recompiling.

Stock rooted 4.1.2 I have an XT925 device so BL is unlocked but it shouldn't affect that mod... I wish paranoid android was available on this phone! Maybe its the 4.1.1 vs 4.1.2?

OP please pm me if you figure this out. I am literally in the exact same boat

I wonder about 4.1.1 vs 4.1.2. Is that an OTA update being pushed out over time or a function of the difference between the XT925 and the XT926 (Razr HD and Razr Maxx HD, as I understand it)?
Digesting all I can as quickly as I can about all this. XT925 is an International version and XT926 is a US version of the same phone? I still can't figure out why some Maxx HDs have 4.1.2 and some do not (having "only" 4.1.1 instead).

if you want just give me your framework-res and i will remove them for you
or try this first https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.tsorn.FullScreen&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImRlLnRzb3JuLkZ1bGxTY3JlZW4iXQ..
I've used this program by tsorn . Problem is that most solutions from the app store that work on 4.1.1 disable the notification shade as well. Gestures and launcher shortcuts to the notifications shade will not either.

well are you on a rom? i can remove the softkeys for you if its deoxed. dont want to have a chance of messing anything up
No, unfortunately I'm on 4.1.1 stock much like OP for the same reasons (tether/camera etc). It wouldn't be a problem if I was on alt roms since I have found apks that disable just the navbar and leave the notification shade. Problem is that installing them on stock rom will cause multiple UI error messages.

Solved.
Get JB 4.1.2 from Telstra, look in Android development and flash it via RSD Lite, must be rooted and have alternative input method I use gmd gestures; Now use the buil.prop mod (qemu.hw.mainkeys=1) and U will have the status bar but not the navbar and no fc.
I have some issues with menu action (auto hiddes and must retry), solved with cm 10 instead of Telstra ROM, little more batt consumption and no blutooth music at the moment.
UPDATE: No need to use another ROM, In Telstra ROM go to config in Your phone, developer options, and check "Disable HW overlays", Ready!
You can use other ROM (4.1.2+) if U want, I like Telstra Rom cause it have good battery and all features in your cell phone works.
Does "Telstra" refer to the Austrailian mobile provider? I see articles that say Telstra pushed out 4.1.2 in mid-December. Is that what you're referencing? From what I'm reading it's not a custom ROM, more an upgrade to the stock ROM, right? If so, that seems like the right direction to me. If 4.1.2 means the build.prop modification will work without FCs and ONLY hide the navbar then finding the best (most stable and reliable) way to upgrade to 4.1.2 seems like the right goal. Is there a preferred link to get the right file(s) to do this upgrade?

[Q] How go get smaller NavBar CM11?

Anybody know how? I know exposed doesn't work on CM11 (DOES IT?) I just need a smaller navar. Its like a whole inch of wasted space. Lol.
And NL, I'm not doing "expanded desktop". That hides them completely and I hate swiping up to in hide them. Please help!!
If you decrease the dpi, status bar will become smaller. You can use app settings from xposed, install it and make "system ui" dpi smaller, that should do it.
Yeah. I hadn't heard xposed not working on cm. Have you tried it?

Change your phablet "Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0"(running Android 4.1.2) to tablet [root

Change your phablet "Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0"(running Android 4.1.2) to tablet [root
Well, I am not good at making flashable zips so I would be writing up the process I used to turn my phablet to tablet,
First of all, I am going to tell you that after this some Samsung's stock apps might not work(including TouchWiz launcher and some other) or might work distorted(including calculator and others) , and play store might not show all apps
In this process, we are going to change LCD density to make the ROM believe that we are using a tablet and it will force tablet ui instead of phablet ui
As I stated above that TouchWiz won't work after this so it is recommended to have other launcher already installed(I use Google experience), so that you might not get stuck on a blank home screen repeatedly giving FC error for TouchWiz,
So after you have got a launcher installed, download any build prop editor(I use ROM toolbox) and open it and search for ro.sf.lcd_density property, you will find 2 with same name, but different values(on 4.1.2),one will have 160 and other will have 240.
Beware, don't change both values, just change 160 value to 140, don't touch 240 one or you will end up having systemUI force close error again and again
When you have done this, just reboot and you will have tabletUI instead of normal phablet ui, you will not have notification bar on top, but will have that on bottom in the side of navigation buttons (you will get them too)
Few changes that will come are:
1. Power+Home key no longer take screenshot, instead you have a soft key for that on navigation bar
2. Settings icon changes a little.
Counting...
Problems:
1. Navigation bar is white instead of normal black one, so notifications won't show up easily (you might get use to it, as I got used to it)
2. You can no longer take screen shot of your notifications
Any other you found? Just tell me, I will add it here
If u got any problem, just reply, I will try to help
I will update this for 4.4.2 soon, as I am not at home for now, on vacations at the moment will update it as I reach home. [UPDATE: Italian firmware update 4.4.2 do not have tablet ui, we can not change is ui to tablet, I don't know why they removed it]
Just to tell you, there are some xposed modules to do this and you can use them too, but they are temporary, this one is permanent, if you factory reset your tab without making any 3rd party launcher a system app then you won't be able to use your tab for the time you don't flash rom again or install a launcher from adb or any other way you can opt to fix it, you can still access notification area, thus also the settings but not anything that can't be opened from there!
I actually got inspired by thinking that there must be some way to get tabletUI instead of normal phabletUI because I like tabletUI personally
If you think of anything that need to be changed here, or needs to be updated, just reply and I will do what's appropriate
Tested on:
1. SM-T211(android v4.1.2), working!
2. SM-T211(android v4.4.2), not working!
You can try and tell me if it works on other variants or not and I will update

As I said, there are some xposed modules which do this but they are temporary, once you factory reset, it will be lost and you will have to redo that, but this is permanent, no matter if you reset, it will be the same way, and one thing that you should keep in mind, TouchWiz home (launcher) will stop working after this, so just make a third party launcher a system app, by just copying the apk to /system/app/

there is no tablet mode in kitkat. So any 4.4.x won't work. I can't stand the white status/nav bar so I don't put the dpi too low. I wonder if phab7 can get around the white status/nav bar.

You'd have to edit SystemUI.apk

Stock 5.1, rooted, decrease nav bar height

Is there any app I can customize nav bar height and buttons on my Nexus 5 stock 5.1 rooted.
I know it can be done with xPosed or with modded some of the system apk.
But is there any other way?
I came across one method of reducing the size of everything moments ago, I was initially looking to reduce the nav bar height only but to no avail.. and decided to give that one a go.
1. use root explore or any app that gives you root \system access
2. locate \system\build.prop and open it to edit
3. look for ro.sf.lcd_density=480 and change the value to 420
4. save, exit and restart
everything will end up smaller so I had to make everything bigger (i.e. icon size on desktop/app drawer using nova launcher, bump up the system text size to large instead the standard normal)
so far I'm enjoying it, try it out and see if you like it, I have definitely got more screen space now than stock without sacrificing the nav bar entirely like I normally would with full screen mode using "all in one gestures" app

Sure is Xposed and gravity box are working well on 5-5.1.1 roms. Mines at 50%hight
Sorry just reread not wanting to use Xposed for some reason. You could do that mod and take it out...

Excellent, I changed dpi to 420 with app dpi changer, also changed fonts to huge in display settings after that...

Best DPI for this tablet?

Hello,
what DPI would you suggest (to be safe) in P6200? I use Carbon rom but on my 7 inch screen navigation app has too small interface. It is hard to click correct button during driving.
Hi burgscheinkerkdeiktraast i would reccomend modifying the navigation app' dpi only obviously you wil need root exposed framework and app settings in app settings increase the dpi of the navigation app stock would/should be 160 so i would recomend 165 or 170
I would try and get back to you if you clarify what carbon rom and navigation app ?
Thx, I meant it for Sygic navigation.
It uses new GUI, extremely small on this tablet. During driving it is dangerous.
Sygic's support will not change this, so I want to do it by workaround.
