[Q] -Navigation- (Navigon by Garmin) - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sony Xperia Z3 comes now with "-Navigation- (Navigon by Garmin) pre-installed. I played with it and I like it. The thing is that the program must be installed onto the phone's internal memory to work and that takes a lot of space due to, mostly, of the large file containing the maps.
One good way to solve the space issue, would be:
1. Find a solution to launch program installation from the sd card (similar to iGo) and keep the program's folders there, or,
2. Install the program on the internal memory but move the folder containing the maps and poi onto the sd card and change the directory to point to.
Has anyone tried to do that? If yes, did it work? And if it worked, would that person be kind enough to write down explicit steps for the rest of us to follow?
Thank you.

Well you would have to create simlinks, that requires root. In Android 5.0 Google will allow you to shift app data without any tweaking.
Also I heard the Garmin app was pretty bad from reviews.

Navigon kinda sucks. Garmin's Streetpilot is much better but I've have not tried to install it on Z3 yet. I have it running on HTC Sensation though.
Currently, the best nav. soft is Sygic and it lets you keep map data on SD card.

Nokia here maps is pretty good, they provide navigation data to many companies. Google Maps is the one I use just because I got used to it, you can save maps on it too.

I would say after testing a lot in the early days of Android phones, Sygic was by far the best android nav. I still use it now and am very happy with it. In the day it was light years ahead of the competition, not sure if this is still the case.

I think sometimes its hard to compare because some have better coverage in some regions than others.

Now, since the thread became a rating for the GPS software, I might ad that, in my opinion, iGo is the best navigation software for android, ios and windows!
I've used it on my previous phones but I wanted to try something new...like Navigon by Garmin since it came for free...

So... anybody figured it out yet?

If you are rooted then use an app called foldermount. Have only used it on rooted 4.4 stock and it works fine as long as you link the folders through /data/media/0/Navigon/ rather than /sdcard0/Navigon, and ignore foldermount s requests to change it back.

TomTom Navigator problems

I have installed TomTom and tried almost every version that can be found on XDA but for some reason i get an error when i try to calculate a route. Every time i get an error message like "Fault calculating route". As i said, i have tried so many versions and even the one that was provided on the disks that came with my Cruise (Polaris) but i get always this error. Any suggestions?

After a few days, I had the same problem without changing anything! I also tried to install other TT versions but it didnt work.
My solution was, delete the map (in my case Benelux, NL + BE) and put a clean or other map back. After that it worked well! I hope this will help you! GL!
Good morning. May not be the answer your looking for, and it's not without it's own problems (you've been warned), but I'll mention it in case your interested.
I got my first color cell / pocket pc when Sprint finally released the PPC-6601. It had a LOT of problems, the biggest of which was it would loose ALL installed programs and data if the battery was removed. And since the device had TERRIBLE battery life, I bought an extended battery that wasn't quite perfect. HOWEVER, I did buy a piece of software for that device that has been a STAPLE on EVERY phone / pocket pc I've owned since... iGuidance.
Now, I'll freely admit I've never owned a Tom Tom device. Looked at them in the stores, played with them a little, but never really was that interested. Recently I tried a Garmin app on the BlackJack II I bought when my AT&T 8525 died. I guess it was ok, but I wasn't really happy with the interface or functionality, and THAT'S why I decided to spend the bigger bucks on the Touch Cruise.
Simply put, iGuidance is the best GPS software I've used. The route calculations are spot on, it adapts quicker than other apps when you miss a turn, etc. It gives you turn-by-turn directions including street names. And I believe it's tne best program for the money. I started with 2.1, went to 3, and now run version 4 on my Touch Cruise. It was somewhat confusing to setup, as you end up dragging an entire folder directly to your memory card. But with that 1.3GB or so transfer, you move the ENTIRE US to your pocket PC. No more moving a couple states, but what happens if you need to go somewhere you forgot to load maps for, etc.
Anyway, you might want to give it a look. Whether using an external BT GPS with my older phone, or installing GPSGate on my HTC Touch Cruise so iGuidance will work properly with the built-in GPS... it really is the only program I'd recommend.
Good luck!
see ur PM........

well, here in europe it works perfect.
u can try IGO but i dont know if they have us maps
Hey folks, I actually came across this thread by searching "tomtom sucks" in google, after being screwed once again by this *****.
Another thing that I found within the same search is reference to the Garmin navigation software, which I did not try yet but prospects are quite promising, including free traffic info via TMC and free map updates.
So my suggestion is to try that.

Better GPS Navigation Software

Hello xda-developers
I was wonder why there isn't a better GPS navigation software for Windows Mobile cellphones (more preferably a newer one like the HTC Touch Pro)?
There is Google Maps which is fantastic but it has two shortcomings:
1. Doesn't have any sort of voice guidance
2. Doesn't reroute when you get off your path.
I've also found Google Navigator but after installing the trial version I found it to be very buggy and hasn't been updated for a few months now. Also costs $60! For that cost I can just go ahead an buy a dedicated GPS for about $40 more.
So I ask: Is there anything better in the works? Possibly an open(!) source project? Or a better presented and cheaper solution?
the best navigation software aren't free.. but there are workarounds obviously
try tomtom, or igo i love them
or try nav4all... free until 2010 and turn by turn voice direction
Hm Navi4all didn't seem to want to get any GPS sats, also seemed slow.
Nav N Go (IGo?) seems to be a european only product?
Tomtom looks like it might be worth its salt though
IGo is not European only...there is a North America version.... I love IGo after being turned on to it by a friend of mine (who also helped me with my first flash ---- props to Kareem9NBA).... text to voice, easy interface.
Before that, I used INav which I loved.....
I personally love tomtom. and its free if you know where to find it.
I'd go for Igo. I am from Europe and it has really good data even in eastern european countries, but TomTom is really good too. I think you should compare these two and just use the one that's faster/better for you.
Remember, we have PHONES that have GPS and you can't expect them to work like a GPS-only device. It's the same with the camera - no camera-phone performs as well as a standard digital camera (not even mentioning SLRs) and no GPS enabled phone will ever work as well as a GPS-only device. Correct me if I'm wrong.
...
I dunno....Garmin Mobile XT works pretty damn well on my fuze. My friend has a dedicated garmin and mine can do more than his can cause our phones have internet access.
And with the update to Garmin from their website, the POI database is just about never out of date - it includes a Google Search function to look up points of interest.
navigon ( http://www.navigon.com/site/de/de/products/navigation_software/windowsmobile_pda )
is excelent like tomtom - you have the possibility to check before you buy it (30 days)
+1 for Igo8 (from the company Nav N Go). European company, but when you use NavTeq's USA maps, works perfect.
Advantages are real TTS (Text to Speech) (i.e., speaks actual street names), 3D buildings in major cities, ability to add POI databases, logos show onscreen for POIs, etc.
A dedicated GPS does work a bit better. But how often do you have that in your pocket when you need it on the spur of the moment???
Depends on what works best for your phone really. Some programs will lag on one persons phone and then not lag at all on anothers....from what I've read around the forum anyway. I've tried a lot of GPS software and I can tell you that...
Garmin Mobile XT has a great UI and excellent maps. Very easy to use and works. Only problem is GPS lag (shows me about 200ft behind my actual position).
TomTom works great. I don't think the UI is anywhere nearly as nice as Garmin's or as user-friendly. But I hardly get any GPS lag using TomTom and if you can keep the maps updated then you should be just fine. This is what I use now.
I've tried IGO8 and Amigo. Amigo wouldn't find the built-in GPS on my phone but looked pretty nice. I didn't get a chance to test it out much because it wouldn't work, sadly....and I didn't feel like trying to make it work lol. IGO8 is great if you can get the right version. I think I had the EU version because I couldn't change KM/hr to M/hr and I was thoroughly annoyed by that. IGO8 did give a little lag, but not as bad as it was with Garmin. What turned me away from IGO was that damn KM/hr thing. I looked up how to fix it for a grand total of half an hour before I gave up and deleted it lol.
All that being said, I like TomTom. I would absolutely 100% delete TomTom and go with Garmin if I didn't experience the lag. It's just that annoying to me. But if you don't experience lag with Garmin I'd go with that.
another vote for igo
used tomtom on my wizard but I really like the UI on IGo on my serra, the custom skins that are available and the use of a sys.txt to set up a lot of preferences in the software. Lots of web resources out there for these things.
used EU and US mapping and found them both to be very good
you can add POI's in google earth kml format and the software converts them at start up - very handy but large numbers of POI's can course the software to have slow response times at start up
Does anyone use their GPS without a data connection ie: using stored maps? I tried to mess around with mgmaps for a few days but never got it to work.

IGO will work without data connection (flight mode on). Obviously, you need to have the program AND maps on your phone. Tomtom will not do the same. Even though it does not need any data connection, it will not establish GPS connection in flight mode. It will work if you turn data or cell radio on, even if there is no connection available (i.e. another country). Not sure about other programs.
Hope that helps.
Mike
yeah perfect. I skipped the data plan (use the nodata cab), so I just use wifi when I can and was trying to find a way to get gps on the road, storing the maps on my micro sd card. I'll look in to it!

Hello,
Can anyone please let me know where I can find free TOMTOM Software/maps to download to my touchpro?
Thanks

Warez is not allowed on xda.
TomTom looks interesting however I don't think Navigator 7 has any USA maps (but their Navigator 6 does). Seems to be a product tailored more towards the European crowd

BEst GPS Navigation software (besides google)??

I often travel through some areas where I do not have phone coverage and so the Google navigation will not work for me.
What is the best GPS navigation software for android? I need something that saves maps locally.
Aslo, is there a way to save google maps to my SD card for trips where I may not have coverage?
Co-pilot.
Keeps maps on SD card.
Sygic i use on mine and tested it out the other day worked great other than no voice....and maps are installed on SD card

I've been using Co-Pilot for months on my G1 and just installed it on my Nexus when that arrived. It's really easy to use, has a nice interface and seems to route very well.

I have installed the iGo but the resolution doesnt fit.
the screen will not enlarg to full screen
any ideas?
does co-pilot work with australian maps?
im trying co-pilot and will give a comment about it... im living in malaysia...
Co Pilot has a version in market place with Aussie maps. I bought it, and it's worth the $60 I paid for it. I had been a long term tomtom on winmob user and find that co pilot does everything I used on tomtom.

To make it fit N1 res:
1. Download this file: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q9D9CX9A
2. Unpack and adb push the following:
adb push sys.txt data/data/com.navngo.igo.javaclient/sys.txt
adb push data.gro data/data/com.navngo.igo.javaclient/data.gro
adb push FrutigerNextCom-Regular.ttf data/data/com.navngo.igo.javaclient/FrutigerNextCom-Regular.ttf
adb push FrutigerOTS.ttf data/data/com.navngo.igo.javaclient/FrutigerOTS.ttf
Now you should see it at the correct res. There's a known bug which is that you'll have to kill the process because you won't be able to close it from the app itself.
Hope it helped!
I have both Sygic an Copilot - aussie versions. Whilst Copilot has a nicer interface, I cannot say enough good things about Sygic. When I was on my HTC Magic, and installed Cyanogens first 1.6 rom, I emailed them for help because neither worked with GPS enabled (due to it not being a released OS yet). The Copilot response was 'Once it's released, we will support it' - or something to that effect (at least that's how th response felt to me). The Sygic developer contacted me straight away, and for the next 2 weeks he sent me update after update until it finally started working - and in the end had to install Cyanogens mod himself to do so.
That's what I call support! Also, I actually prefer the Sygic interface, it feels less cluttered, and more...whats the word? Intuitive. ie, where you expect an option to be, it seems to be. Copilot for all it's bells and whistles, I don't think of it as an intuitive program. Intuitive programming is a must on mobile devices given limited screen space, and Sygic hits it for me.
EDIT: Add to that, Sygic is faster
Which version to download for north America? There are 3 in the marketplace. 2 for Europe and 1 for Australia and new Zealand
Google Nexus One - Navigon/beta+CoPilot+Google Navigation/beta
CyanogenMod-5.0-beta4 + addons and highmem.
iPhone 3GS 32GB/white - Navigon/beta+TomTom+CoPilot+iGO+Sygic
lol get lost much?..jesus.....

I have to add to this, not only is Sygic better in my opinion, but CoPilot has some awful disadvantages for me.
1. Does not follow one way restrictions on roads in my hometown (Baltimore, MD). Roads that have always been one way (for 100 years). Major confidence breaker.
2. When contacted about poor directions (citing one way restrictions not being followed), they stated it would take a few months to get an update sent out. YIKES!
That's really enough to be a deal breaker for me.
Sygic has never led me astray, even in foreign states where I am not familiar with the roads. I can't trust CoPilot to do so, as such I got a refund within my 24 hour period.

Could you please tell me how was the experience of using iGO in android compare to Windows Mobile?
thanks
I use Copilot, which is rather good, considering its cost. Sometimes it seems to give slightly too late of a notification to turn on an exit, and sometimes it thinks that a one-way road is a two-way one, but overall it's good, if one adapts to its minor quirks. I haven't tried anything else (besides Google Maps and Google Earth), so I don't know whether it's the best, though.

Moving from winmo to Android, Disappointed

I just got my Samsung spica, with Android 1.5 Cupcake. I have been using winmo for a long time from HTC tytn to my last one is winmo 6.5 on Xperia X1.
Android is very different, I have seen so many videos and heard so much about it that I thought I know almost all of it. When I got the Spica and the first thing that I did was to download taskiller, I read about if before that this could free up the rams. But what I didn't understand that unlike winmo, taskiller actually kills a task, since there is NO WAY to close a task. There are no close button at all (is it me or that's just stupid?). Then I thought I would get a battery percentage app. Apparently you have to pay for all of them!! I have to pay for a basic app to monitor battery % (should have been added in the operating sys).
Then I started playing with the games, there are lot of games to try out. Some of them are free too. Spica has a 800Mhz processor so I tried the Speed forge demo, it was great.
Now I thought I would check the GPS, so I opened the google map. Wow it was fast to find my location! Then I thought I would try to find the local bus schedule from the map. In my Xperia X1, when I see a bus stop, I could just click on it and it would give the bus schedule (I am in montreal). In spica I tried to tap on a bus stop, it didn't work. I realized that its because the google map in it might be a old one. What a disappointment!
The final disappointment was when I tried to save an app in my SD card. I have a 6GB data plan, so I was download a lot of apps, then I thought I will move them to my SD card, apparently there is no way to do that. I mean come on!!! Later learned that they are working on it.
So it is clear that you need to have huge ROM (and RAM). Xperia X10 should have 1GB ROM, I think I should wait for it. Or should I get Desire instead as it has 512MB RAM? Or should I find a rootable Android phone? Or should I just wait for WP7?
This is so confusing now....
There are free battery apps, I don't see why you couldn't find one. I believe I use Battery Lite.
There's a neat task killer called osTask that give a UI for killing tasks, similar to the WebOS PalmPre, so you control task killing rather than auto.
I wouldn't be surprised if they update google maps for the bus stops for you and/or add google earth to your phone. But updates tend to start on the latest os version (eclair).
Not familiar with Samsung spica nor do I have your app issues. But my Nexus with Android 2.1 rocks (rooted or not)!
ya, so far android phone do not have hotswap sd card slot as the os requires the sd card to be in to store your apps/multimedia.
but its can be use as a thumbdrive still when you hook up to your pc and select mount sd card as removable drive.
so far so good on acer liquid, try upgrading for yr device.
You don't need to close apps, or use taskkillers. You don't need to free up RAM, Android will do that for you. It keeps apps in the memory so that when you open them up it's faster, when memory is needed it will kill the least important apps to make room.
Battery apps are available for free, the system itself will show you battery percentage without an app or widget Settings>About Phone>Status.
There is no way to move an app to SD because of piracy. Apps2SD is enabled amongst the modding community and you should be able to find a way of enabling that. Surely you can understand the issue, you should be able to install as many apps as you want... assuming you don't have a G1
Thanks for the replies. Yeah I kind of got the hang of it at the end (even though I couldn't find a free battery app). I solved my bus stop problem after I found one app in Google labs made for Montreal specifically. Yet I wasn't satisfied with the phone for 1.5 Cupcake I guess. So I returned it after one day of use.
Then I just learned today that Samsung is releasing 2.1 in that phone. My luck Well I now I think I will go for the X10. It is suppose to come on 14th April in Canada (with Android 1.6 though).

Suggestions for GPS map software.

As I found out google maps doesnt store the maps on the device - it needs a wifi connection. Does anyone know what gps app package that will keep the maps on the device (prefferably on the memory card) so that the gps is actually useful?
Sygic and Navigon come to mind. Both are in the marketplace but they are not free.
i use copilot for gps.
I recently bought sygic and I like it. It has yet to be wrong. It is from Europe, so the default voice has an accent (which I kinda like being in the US since it's different) all of North America for me cost 26 dollars.
Best advice just try Sygic. It gives you a free 7 day trial but from my experience only let me download one state. After buying I can download all of North America.
One gripe I do not like about it is that you can't send maps to the SD card. It all goes on the main internal storage.
Having all the maps on internal memory would be horrible! unless I download one trip at a time. Im surprised the big gps companies like garmin and magellan havent came out with map software for android gps.
Actually Garmin bought one particular app I just forget which one it was. A little while after they did buy out that app they slapped a 50 dollar per year price tag on it.
Though if you are willing to tweak the app upon looking at the settings (and finding out where it is from looking in various forums) file in the app you can force it to store them else where. Have I tried it yet? Nope. Though I suppose I could and let you know since it will be worth my time in the end.

Upon messing with the settings file and telling it instead of reading from the Aura directory on the internal storage, I set it to "extStorage/SdCard/Aura" it didn't like that and now it force closes.
edit:
Still tinkering with it. I just tried the /mnt/sdcard2/ location and still no dice. Maybe if it was rooted and actually had access to write to the SD card? I'm not sure. Upon reading the thread in the general forums about not being able to write files to external sd card.
Anyway I am getting side tracked and veering away from the threads original purpose. I will continue tinkering on my own time.
All in all if you don't mind it putting everything on the sd card it a great app. A single state usually is only 20-35 megabytes. The first will be large mind you since it downloads all the needed files such as voices, graphics, etc.
Well Im trying sygic now but dont really care for it. Seems a little mediocre. Went on a day trip today and it couldnt find a main road. Pretty frustrating. So the search continues.
Ah it's all a matter of taste and preference then. I like Sygic but I will not go to Navigon. The fact you need to pay yearly bugs me.
You should look into copilot then. Though whenever they update the app you need to buy the newer version. I guess that's how they get you with that one :/
Those are the only other two gps apps that I am aware of so try looking into those.

You do realize that google nav caches the route, it just won't load the maps. If you enter your route while on wifi it will be there until you reach your destination. Or you could just tether it to your phone, which is what I prefer

Yes this is true from what I have encountered also. Plus doesn't it tend to have more up to date Point of Interests? On the flip side you can't cache everything to the SD card can you?
I prefer Sygic because I'm ancient and don't have a phone and was in need of GPS device. This worked out when I got my tablet over the holidays. I would have used google maps but I wanted to know I had everything on there (like an entire state).
I'm not denoting google maps though since I almost went that route until I found other means that were better to me
I'm really surprised that Google doesn't make their maps available for download to the device. Even if I had to pay say 30 bucks for the USA it would be worth it.
That would be convenient. I would totally use it at that point. But alas we can't always get what we want...
My favorite GPS software is Maverick since I used my Galaxy Tab P1000, but it does not run on this P6200 device. Any suggestion?
Google maps can pre-cache areas you selected. Click on Settings -> Labs and enable the Pre-Cache function.
Well that precaching is terrible. The maps aren't close enough to be useful. Back to the drawing board.
