Restoring pictures after rooting phone - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to restore pictures after unlocking bootloader and Flashing custom recovery? I made the switch from 4.4.4 to lollipop and didn't do a backup but thought all my pictures would save in the cloud I had it under auto backup in the settings. Help please!!!

You could use Titanium Backup to restore the Settings app data.

You could try using Market Enabler, etc. to gain that ability. Titanium Backup is the only app I use for those purposes, so I'm not sure of any other (its the best IMO).

[Q] I finally ready to unlock and root after 2 weeks!

I have had my Nexus 5 for two weeks and I think I'm ready to unlock the bootloader and root it! But what is the best way to back up stock? Is there a way to back up all your apps and settings etc when you are on stock?

Until your rooted and have custom recovery, you could use titanium backup to backup all your apps. However i would say install a custom recovery and make a complete backup of your phone.

After you flash a custom recovery the first thing you should do is take a nandroid backup and then take a backup of your EFS! It's highly recommended that you take the efs as it's unique to your device.
To take a backup of your apps when you aren't rooted, use Helium from the playstore. It's pretty good!

I would look into helium rather than titanium backup (I am just not a fan). It does not require root.

That link should have got you going.... adb and fastboot can be a pain in the you know what to get set up.
When in device manager what shows up under Android phone when you connect the device with USB debugging enabled?
You should see "google nexus adb interface" or "adb interface" under android phone.
Personally I'd recommend to just install the Android SDK to the root of your PC's hard drive

This is a very sensitive system folder that contains Phone-specific information such as the IMEI (encrypted in the nv_data.bin), wireless devices MAC addresses, product code (also in the nv_data.bin), and much more. Often users trying to change product codes or trying to unlock the mobile will end up corrupting data in this location.

Sorry about your game save

Sorry, probably the wrong way to describe the service.
I mean services like Google+ such as an online account service. An example of this would be Facebook as they backup game data

Files Not Being Recognized

I have a Nexus 5 that I have had since December that has been functioning flawlessly (Google replacement for my last one with busted glass)
I have not done anything to this device (no hacking, no ROMSs, no rooting), beside replace the battery....
A few days ago, I noticed that a bunch of my "custom" ringtones were not working anymore. They just stopped showing up on the ringtone picker. The same goes for my "custom" alarm tones. I also noticed that when I go to attach a picture (to a hangout message, or SMS) that the "Recent" category shows only 1 or 2 pictures (instead of all recent pics). However, when I use RootExplorer and look at the directories, all of the files are there. The ringtones, alarms, pictures, etc. In fact the only pictures that are showing up under the "Recent" category are the ones that have been taken since I began having the problem.
There is also some other weird things happening, like I have lost some contact pictures and the phone has been acting weird.
This phone got the 5.1 update and I have already tried to wipe the /cache partition. Again, all files are there, but Android is not recognizing them...
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I guess I was just hesitant because this is the 1st phone I have had that does not have an actual "SD card" so I was not sure how it would work...
Also, the phone is not rooted -- not sure if that matters

So to keep from loosing app data, I need to use Ti Backup -- but to use Ti Backup I need to have root access...
In order to get root access, I will have to wipe my phone and loose my app data.... -- Sounds like a never-ending feedback loop
This is why I wanted to wait to do a factory reset

Ok, I guess I need to do some research on that then... Not sure how to tell if the bootloader is unlocked
Most of the stuff I looked at said it would wipe all data... Any links/suggestions on using the unlocked bootloader?

If you don't know how to see that then probably it's locked because it comes locked out of the box. So I'm afraid you will have to wipe your device data to fix your issue. If you're still wondering how to see that you must turn off your device and hold volume down + power button, phone will turn on and green Android will appear. At the bottom you will see lock state of bootloader

backup , what backup ??
Please explain in detail
I think he means that he has backed up in TWRP before trying to root.
Every time I try to flash with twrp I get stuck in a bootloop or in the recovery with the /data error.
Best of luck to you. Please let me know if you find a way. Thanks

LOL... Who cares what backup I'm talking about? That's irrelevant to the question, which was "does this require starting over?"
Let me try asking again, I suppose.
Does this require [mean that I'll need to be] starting over [Reformatting/wiping all data on device; 'starting' from factory settings] or could I restore a backup [the copied data from my phone to another device, in order to restore data] I made [after rooting with the method you posted]?

Relevant is to ask correctly , to the point and give relevant information , this is not the mind reading section of the forum
what kind of backup you made? Titanium?
What data you mean , user data or apps data?
If you followed the procedure in post 3 the same in both telephones( same model) and both have the same firmware restoring app and settings , user data should be possible ...data of those apps i would not restore .

Does this imply that one backup may not restore data in this case while another may? I used SmartSwitch on a PC, Titanium wouldn't let me back up without root. Are you implying that it matters which backup program I use?
I wasn't planning to back up app data such as game progress, just apps, user settings and files.
I've already started from factory 3 times on this phone and I simply didn't want to go through settings again.
Regardless I think this gives me the information I needed, I wouldn't feel so bad about restarting my phone again just to root it, if I can get all my settings and files back.

Do you mean keeping the encrypted data from the stock firmware? If so, then no. Root always changes the encryption keys. Even the methods that allow root + encryption still require a wipe at first.
