The keyboard lags at times. How to fix? - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The keyboard on my 2011 phone is still snappy as ever.
The keyboard on my Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2" however, is always pausing after every few buttons. When you keep typing, a second later all the touched letters still appear. Minus one, of course, as to make it a bit more annoying.
This is really silly, having a $700 8 core tablet behave laggy. There is probably a setting. It is as if after every few buttons, it connects to Samsung and only continues after the connection is complete. My best guess. Anyone know of this problem, and what setting causes the keyboard to be snappy like my phone?

Not the hardware's fault, nor the tablet's fault. The keyboard app is simply not well optimized. Try clearing it's data and cache.

I might be blind but I cannot find the stock keyboard as an app. Does it have a funky name?

Settings - General - Application Manager
On the right hand pane swipe so you get to "ALL" on the top, then scroll down to Samsung Keyboard.

You have to go into Settings/Apps/All/sorry I must have uninstalled it, but find it here.

Found it, thanks. It had only the 'default' 12KB of chache. Will see what happens.

Touch Pro Keyboard Lag

Does anyone experience this? I find it really irritating. Sometimes its really smooth, but most of the time it doesn't work as well when you try to answer text messages.
Anyone has this keyboard lagging problem or is there any solution to it? (I've disabled the word suggestion and it still lags)
Its an WM feature
i dint find any issues as such...
Same porblem here
I also have this keyboard entry lag problem. Even with word suggestion disabled.
I am running original Stock rom, and hope that the next update solved this porblem.
Dangit I hope this problem won't be a continuation from the Kaiser/Tytn II/Tilt. The skipping letters and keyboard lag issue is one of the main reasons I want to upgrade from my Tilt. No matter what ROM or HardSPL I use the phone can't keep up with my typing speed.

I'm sure you're kidding me. lol.
Well i didnt really have this problem with Tytn. Now that this happens, I felt really disappointed with the product.
As I know, that lag occurs, when you start to type immediately after sliding-out. The system is that time too busy with display rotating and that causes the lag(that;s the reason, why I want to disable autorotation, but don't know how to). It is OK after few seconds and it is displaying the chars as I type with no lag.
Im also victim of keyborad lag. Never used to get in on my TyTN 2

If you disable autorotate, wouldn't it stay in potrait mode when you're doing your typing?
I agree, only lag issues I have experienced is if typing starts immediately after pulling keyboard out. Worst scenario is to open Messages, then slide out keyboard and immediately try to start typing. Phone is at that time starting message program, changing screen orientation etc, so no wonder lag.
Just open keyboard, then click messages, wait for sec and you should not have lag...

thanks for the tip, but doesn't improve much of my situation. wonder whether it has got to do with any tweaks i've done in the registry. In any case I'd try hard reseting and try again. Should it be the same, I'd guess we'll need new ROM updates to see if it improves the situation on the auto-rotate.
I mean it's really tough to switch your style when it comes to existing TyTn users. "message comes in -> slides and reply"
That's what I do usually. hmm.

no. not really Tomas, I'm a ppc noob
I have the same issue, however, even whenn waiting for a few sec's after opening the keyboard, it will still lag..
I have checked if I have other processes running, but I am not. It will start typing fine, then lags for a couple of seconds, then types normal again, after the lag. It will give me a lot of double lettres in the text I typed when the lag was occuring.. Very, very annoying
The hardware keyboard was the reason for getting this pnone. I used to have the QTEK9100, and there this was never an issue...
Mine is a straight out of the box MDA Vario IV, received from Tmobile friday..
Would a ROM change help in this case? I don't want to loose my warrantee on it...

same here, not just when starting also during typing it stops for 10 sec, then continues. Also when using sliding keyboard iso display keyboard when fields are filled partially with characters these become unreadable when switching to sliding keyboard. iow sliding keyboard cannot be used always and cannot be switched to/from display keyboard. also after hardreset and rebuiling touchpro problem reoccured from start.
any suggestions??

Touchpad problems

Typing this on my keyboard dock, with mousepad disabled.
They keys work very well and I have no complaints about it o far.
But the mousepad - oh my.
At first it was too fast, managed to sort that out in settings. All well.
I don't completely understand difference between mouse pointer and gesture thing. Is it only a graphical representation that is different, or should it behave differently? Also, the navigation is very cumbersome. For example, I don't get how exactly am i supposed to flick through my launcher screens....
But the most annoying thing, and that is why i turned it off - it keeps pressing left button when i use mousepad. I am not even touching the part where the left/right mouse buttons are. Also, in settings, it says right an middle button. What's with that.
Yup, new to tablets, new to peripherals for Android.
Does anyone else have problems with the keyboard, musepad... Please share and please help me understand keyboard/mousepad so I could use it in full potential. Cause right now, only typing is a dealio for me - and charging of course, which is working fine.
Thanks
I have never even heard of a TF user actually using that touchpad thingy. I have it disabled as well, as it constantly places my cursor mid-text, and therefore causes me to add the new and most recent part of my last sentence mid-sentence somewhere higher up in the text. Really frustrating.
So, in short: no, you're not alone, and I don't think *anyone* has found a wy to get it to work like it should, except for those that can bear keeping their fingers in quite an unnatural position hovering somewhere above the keys waiting to be used. Bah. With the touchpad disabled, hwever, I feel it's OK, save for too much typos to my liking causing me to drop typing speed (either preventatively or by necessitating correction). I'm really looking forward to SwiftKey support for this keyboard!
Have you noticed more lags in UI while using touchpad? I've described it in another thread (same with USB mouse)
question about the track pad, the only reason i was going to buy it was because it was said it fixes touch issues. are ur touhces accurate and swift ? also how fast can you type, do word documents keep up with you

Keyboard (keys) are not problematic at all. Tried with KingsOffice, Google Docs...All well there.
Only mousepad/touchpad is the one that makes me wanna cry. I do have USB mouse, so i'll try it.
Regarding the lags ... with dock connected, no, i don't think there is any lag. I will test it with mouse, too, and let you know how that goes.
Hey,
so, I have tried USB mouse and it works fine.
Furthermore, mosuepad works perfectly well, too.
It is Google Drive apps that are not compatible or something.
Whenever I write a document in gdrive, I get this weird things with mouse clicking all around...also the USB mouse.
If I than switch to KingSoft Office or Polaris, the weirdness continues there, too.
But, If I don't open or work in gdrive, everything works just fine!
On the matter of lag: no lag here.

and didn't you notice more lags while scrolling through apps and widgets or moving apps? try holding an icon on your homescreen and move it fast around the screen, see what happens.
Nope, seems same.
Maybe launcher thing...i'm on apex...
I don't see any performance degradation because of the dock.
I do have other problems sometimes. Like, can't enter a pin number on lockscreen.
Also, that was kind of a funny thing, when i first showed pad and dock to some friends i brought it turned off.
Pulled it out of and said "I have a new notebook. But it is not notebook, suckas..." and detached pad.
Then i turned it on. It's just...that it didn't want to turn on...sucka
Had to plug in the teh dock again, turn it on and than it was fine.
Strange...happened only once though.
BR
Oh OK, I see. That's most likely a launcher thing. I think I'll wait for JB for a little while and if it doesn't solve this, I'll probably try Apex or Nova.
That's a bummer with showing it to your friends ;-) kind of like Microsoft showing their new products and getting some kind of BSoD or similar thing almost every time they introduce their new OS ;>
As to the lockscreen - try changing WiFi sleep settings so it won't be turned off when screen is off. Might be bad for battery life, but just check if this is the problem, as it was for many people who had huge lags with waking their Primes up from sleep.
You might also try playing with dock's power-saving settings in ASUS settings.

I know what they mean, for sometimes swiping the homescreen is less fluid or snappy than at other times. Nothing drastic though.

Apex has been the best so far, although for heer speed, you could take a look at FTL Launcher as well. Not quite as configurable, but its "instant" homescreen swiping is as fast as your system van do it.

As far as I know, having WiFi enabled doesn't consume a relevant amount of battery when it is not actively transferring data. Indeed, several Prime owners have benefited from having it always on (the way it is stock on the TF700, I believe, so unless you have tweaked this setting yourself, it probably already keeps WiFi enable dwhile sleeping). It never hurts to try, I guess.
OMFG. I am so stupid sometimes
I have a password on several sites that consists of characters and numbers.
Well, for the PIN on the pad i choose same numbers. And of course I wanted to type in my password, with characters, too.
And it didn't work  - how strange
There actually is a little lag, but that's nothing to what I was thinking is going on
Thanks anyway! (I usually have wifi always on, also on phone....and it doesn't drain much battery if not transferring....)
That's good to hear ;-)
I've actually discovered that it may be 3-5% battery/hour less drain with WiFi completely off and screen on (apart from the obvious advantage of turning off Internet while reading pdfs, so I won't get distracted easily...).

Keyboard won't space

My keyboard won't apply a space after punctuation. Any idea why?
And yes, auto space is on. I've got no clue what the issue is. Everything is updated.our am I just going crazy and it never did that to begin with?
Anybody? Keyboard version 1.2.48.
Screen protector? I found that space was nearly impossible with the Zagg curved glass screen protector.
No, it's when you insert a comma or something it won't add a space after it. Or am I just crazy and it never did? See,I can type a complete sentence and it won't space.add a period without double tapping the home button.
Use a different keyboard? SwiftKey?
I was thinking about it. Just curious as to why it's got an issue now.
Do you think it could be a messed up ota update? Or is it a glitch in the keyboard software
Is there a way to uninstall and reinstall the Samsung keyboard? It's what I'm most used to.

If you go to settings > application manager > top right MORE menu > Show system Apps > Scroll down to Samsung Keyboard > Storage > Clear Cache / Data, that should set it back up as it was when you got the phone, basically reset the keyboard back to defaults
I've done that . Many times before making this thread. Reset app settings. Nothing works, which is why I think it's an issue with the software.
But I don't see anyone else complaining about this issue anywhere.
I assume you've already Googled the problem?

Check to make sure you have your settings set so the spaces are set automatically. Go to Settings >Language and input >Samsung keyboard (hit the gear for settings) >put a check in "Auto spacing"

Do you have any screen dimming software installed like f.lux etc?
I know they can cause problems with certain buttons due to the overlay
No screen dimming, all keyboard settings are the same as when I head my s6. Before I got the newest baseband update I'm pretty sure it spaced.
I'd give another keyboard a try until the next update then, not sure what's happened, strange bug
How often do keyboard updates release?
No clue

It's killing me. I want to say it's just a glitch in the keyboard software that's giving me this issue.
You're killing yourself, like I say, there are way better keyboards than the stock samsung one available, SwiftKey is by far the best

Need advice for solving persistent glitch

Hello everyone,
It has been a while since I ventured through this forum, but it seems that y'all may be my only hope.
I've been suffering through this glitch/stutter that, when scrolling, the phone registers my finger as taps everywhere my finger slides. All I simply need to do it remove my finger from the phone and I can continue scrolling like normal. It is super annoying and I cannot find out what causes it, it just seems random. It never happened on any of my Nexus phones in the past.
Now, here's a list of things I've tried in order to fix it:
- Safe mode
- Factory Reset (Restore from Google account)
- Factory Reset (New Device option)
- RMA'd through Google support and received a new pixel and the problem persists (even after going through the steps above on the new device)
Here is a short video of the glitch while it is happening.
https://goo.gl/photos/GysQXd82MexVkk836
(Hopefully that link works)
Note: the glitch will not stop until I take my finger off the phone, you can tell when it is happening when I scroll over the share button and it registers as a tap.
If you guys have any suggestions, I'm ready to try anything at this point. I don't want to go through Google support because I know they'll send me yet another Pixel (I've already talked to them again and that was their solution, I told them I'll try a few more things) and I feel like that is a waste. I'm almost 100% positive that this is a software glitch, not hardware.
Thanks!
Was that the Reddit app or a browser window? I'll try to reproduce if you can tell me exactly what you were running. I do not have that behavior in the XDA app as I try it right now.

Hey thanks for the response. I've gotten the glitch to happen all over. The Reddit app as you saw in the video, the chrome app, even scrolling through the list of apps in the stock pixel launcher. So I'm really not sure how to have you replicate the problem.
I'm thinking it is because certain settings in the settings app since Safe Mode disabled all third party apps when I tried that. I have night light enabled to turn on at dusk, I have ambient display off, auto brightness off, etc. Nothing too out of the ordinary.
I thought it may have been because I have location settings on high accuracy and when the phone pings for location maybe it bogs down the rest of my phone at that certain time but there's no way I can try and replicate that. It's a long shot anyway.

I just tried reproducing this by going to the app drawer and scrolling up and down while being sure my finger passed over both the home and app switcher buttons a good 50 or so times. The ONLY time the nav bar buttons were triggered were if my finger completely left the screen and went into the bezel - clearly that's not your problem. So I don't think I can reproduce the glitch.
If you think this is caused by your specific set of settings configured, you can always rule that out quickly with a factory reset. Just do a factory reset, set things up quickly, go ahead and login with your Gmail account so you can download some apps but do NOT change any non-basic settings. For example, go ahead and setup WiFi but do NOT change any display, input, or accessibility settings (especially the last thing there - the accessibility settings are often glitchy themselves). One setup, install a bunch more Google apps then try to reproduce the behavior again in the app drawer. If the behavior continues, then you may have a bad touchscreen sensor!
One last thing: Any chance you have really dry fingertips? Dry skin could always be your problem here!

I guess I'll try a factory reset and not mess with the settings although that kind of defeats the purpose of using this phone the way I want lol.
I'm not sure if this is caused by a bad touchscreen sensor because I've had the problem on two separate Pixel phones so far. Or maybe I just got super unlucky with two faulty phones.
I don't think my fingers are too dry. If all else fails, I'll try moisturizing them I guess. I've never had this problem on all my other phones though, but I guess you never know.
Thanks for the help.

I recently had a similar situation (different bad behavior) when helping my mother-in-law with a vision disability. Atrociously unacceptable performance, multiple phones. Turned out the triple-tap-to-zoom feature in the accessibility options was the culprit and disabling that one checkbox made all the difference.
I'm not necessarily suggesting you must use defaults forever, but if this is a setting of yours, let's first prove that it's a setting before going through the long process of finding out WHICH setting it is. Does that make sense? If we reset settings to defaults and it continues, no need to spend all that time - you've got a broker phone. If that does fix it, no need to return the phone, it's a buggy setting - let's find it to see if you can live without it one way or another. It may be a major deal breaker out it may be something you really don't care much about.
I think I get that issue now and again, usually whilst scrolling in chrome. I decided it was due to holding a finger on the screen just long enough (before starting to scroll) to register the press as a "select text" event.

Yeah that could be what causes it. Maybe it is just the way we are scrolling and how Google has calibrated the screen touch sensors.
Possible Fix
So I went into accessibility settings and changed the duration you need to hold your finger down to do a long press to medium (from the default as short). It seems that may have fixed it. I haven't experienced the glitch since I've done that change.
Here's to hoping that did indeed fix the issue.
Thanks everyone.

Anyone else experiencing dropped tap inputs?

On my pixel 2 tap inputs occasionally don't register, I've had it happen in the android system menu, the android back/home buttons, chrome, etc. Is anyone else experiencing this?
My phone's basically on stock default settings, nothing unusual running. Not sure if it's only tap inputs getting dropped or the whole system locking up temporarily. Turning on "Show taps" in Developer options I can see there's no visual effect when a missed tap occurs.
Yes, this is me too exactly. Same thing with the dev option too. Not sure if I should wait for 8.1 or if it's hardware and RMA it. Frustrating because I like this phone.
I noticed this on my phone, clicking around in the settings and on the back and home buttons. I then did a factory reset (because of a separate issue where the location icon was always displaying in the notification area, even when not in use). After that the issue seems to have gone away. So it would seem to be software issue. I suggest trying a factory reset (though beware that this wipes everything on your device).
P.S. nonexistent, I'm impressed that you joined the XDA forums in Dec 2010 and never posted a comment until now. Of course, you might need to change your screen name to "existent," now that you're out in the open.
I have definitely noticed this as well, happy to know it wasn't just me

I tried a reset but the issue still showed up. In fact it happened twice on the first time setup stuff afterwards. I called Google and we went through the motions and reset it from recovery mode but it was still there when I was testing it the next couple hours. Anyway, we're doing the RMA thing. I'll let you guys know how it works out when I get my new phone.
Got my replacement and the problem still exists. It even happens just a couple screens into the initial setup after a factory reset from recovery mode.
I find that it occurs when I'm in a small room with the heat turned up. The sensitivity of the touch screen seems to depend a lot on moisture. If I keep my fingers moist (or wear a touch sensitive glove) it works a heck of a lot better.

That's good and bad news I guess, hopefully just needs a software update. I have a replacement coming Monday, but I kind of expect no improvement and that this is just a common thing that a lot of people aren't noticing
I noticed that for a while in Google Play Books, in which I tap the screen frequently to turn pages. I tried a factory reset, which didn't help. I tried running in safe mode and testing on Maps and still had a problem, although less frequently (a higher percentage of taps worked). Then it started to work better. We'll see if that lasts.
I tried flicking as opposed to tapping and flicking always works.
I'd suggest posting on the Pixel product forum or calling support, so that Google becomes more aware of the issue. There are some threads on the subject on reddit and the product forum.
Out of interest are you noticing it any particular parts of the screen?
I've noticed it a few times but it's been on areas of the screen near the edges.
I assumed it was some sort of palm rejection thing going on it the background with it thinking I'm accidently mashing the display.
With me it was the right edge toward the middle, as that's where you tap to turn the page in Play Books.
I get it on the back button frequently, but it happened just now in the middle of the screen when I typed the text input box to start writing this
I think this is the whole OS hanging/freezing briefly actually, not a touchscreen input issue
- Pressing the hardware unlock button can get ignored (both locking/unlocking)
- Scrolling from a quick flick + release can suddenly stop (no additional inputs)
So most likely this is a software issue, hopefully fixed in an upcoming update? It's kinda annoying
Did you change the DPI or font size? I go back to default and it seems that everything is good now.

can you be more specific? I just got Pixel 2 - black, 128GB (Canadian). I can touch and the UI responds well. But i want to test it out thoroughly..

I can trigger the system hang/"missed input" most reliably by visiting m.reddit in chrome (any thread w/ comments) and spamming tap on the [-] next to the username of any comment to collapse/expand the section. Turning on Show Taps from Developer Tools in the system menu I can see taps being ignored sometimes

So, I replicated what you told me, 3x. I didn't miss any taps, and no system hang/missed input..
hmm
Got my replacement and it has been much better so far. Still a few dropped inputs but I think those may be false positives because I am hyperfocused on it. Pretty sure I have always had to double click occasionally on all phones at various times.

Yeah, sometimes I see a tap register visually on the screen, but the intended action doesn't happen.

It's funny. I had the issue. Did a factory reset. Felt like it was better. But now that I'm thinking about it more I notice it a lot. So I can't tell if it's really different. Before I figured I'd made a mistake. Now I think it's the phone. Damn you phone!
Anyway, I notice that the issue tends to happen more or less randomly, at any position on the screen. Also, sometimes the same tap fails to register twice in a row, but once it's starts working all subsequent taps that come in a row work (say I'm clicking through a lot of menu items in some settings). So maybe that lends some credence to the idea that there is a system for registering the taps that is not waking up and once it does it works fine.
Perhaps related, I have my ambient display set to wake on double tap. Before the Nov update it hardly worked. Now it seems to be working reliably.
