Help, N5 hardware buttons only working in recovery - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Nexus 5 whose buttons quit working yesterday. The power and volume buttons will not work at all or respond to anything at all. Strangely, I can hold the power and volume buttons and it will throw the phone into recovery and the buttons work fine there. However, no response whatsoever while booted into the OS.
Prior to this happening the phone was stock, not rooted, locked bootloader.
In an attempt to fix it, I have done a FDR--didnt work.
I also flashed Android 5.0 and Android 4.4.4 factory images thinking it might have been a corrupted file or something. However, having done that a couple times it still isn't working. Any ideas?

Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Are you still under warranty? I'd rma the device

Out of warranty. I hesitate to call it hardware because it works while I am in the bootloader screen and the buttons allow me to put the phone into bootloader. Just won't work in OS

So, all the buttons work if your in the bootloader or recovery? I'd try flashing the factory image and see if they work then. It'll wipe your device so back up first.

Correct. The buttons do not work at all in the OS. But if I press them to take me into bootloader/recovery if I hold em down they will get me there. Once in bootloader/recovery, they work flawlessly.
I tried flashing factory images of both 4.4.4 and 5.0. Did not work.

I can't boot into safe mode. That requires holding the power button until the power dialogue comes up. Then pressing and holding "power off."
The button does not work, hence I cannot go into safe mode. If I hold the power button long enough, it will eventually reboot the phone though.

Enter safe mode with the phone off.
Press and hold power until you see the google logo. Then release power and press and hold volume down until booted. You should be in safe mode.

Same Problem!

My phones screen won't wake.

My phones screen seems to shut off and not wake up. I can tell the phone is on though because the buttons light up. And if I press and hold the back button the flashlight turns on. Also the volume rockers seemed to work but the screen stays off. Occasionally it seems to turn back on but but it'll just go back off again. Rebooting the phone doesn't working and I've also installed two different ROMs on it. Any advice on how to solve this?
Relock bootloader with fastboot oem lock cmd and download and run the ruu according to your phone version and see if the problem persists. If you don't know how to get into fast boot hold power and volume down until buttons stop flashing and keep holding volume down till you get See the screen with skating HTC men. Or if you have a backup in recovery you can restore from recovery and see if that helps your problem.

I was hoping I wasn't going to have to do that but I will if its my only option.
Kernel mods will do that also.

Haven't messed with any kernels. I was running the latest CM10 nightly when it happened. Figured it was the rom so I switched to the stable version but problems still happened.

No. No backups unfortunately.
My other suggestions would be to make sure you don't have a corrupt zip. Downloading from chrome or from you phone I've had issues. Ei8 or ie9 works well for me. Hope you get it figured out.

That was happening to my phone. I found that if i applied pressure to opposite corners at the same time, the screen would come back. If i let go, the screen would return to black. Everything worked when I touched the screen, volume rockers, etc. I took it into AT&T and they gave me a new one under warranty. I was running CleanRom 5.1 at the time. I honestly do not believe my problem was caused by over flashing or any type of hacking. SO, try to flex or contort the phone in different directions and see if you can cause it to turn on and off.
I ended up having to use RUU. The problem seems to be fixed. Still don't know what caused it but at least it wasn't a hardware issue.
A thanks would be nice

HELP!!! T300 Locked: Requires Google Sign In

Need help guys.
Don't know what happened, but after the kid's Tf300 booted, it's at the google sign in. But the tablet does not have wifi so there's no way to sign in.
So it's been stucked like that for days now. And since we can't sign in, we couldn't turn on wifi. I don't care if we have to factory reset or wipe the system as long as I can get it to work again.
Thanks much for your help.

I've never had the problem but using google search string - android phone locked google account no wifi - gets many hits.
This one looks promising.
Good Luck!
Maybe some with experience on this tablet will respond.
Press and hold the power button at the same time as the volume button.
It will reset the device into recovery mode.
Read the text that shows up, it will tell you to use the volume down button to select the option you wish to choose which is to restore to default (last option on the right), press volume up to select it.
It will wipe your device to factory settings (basically like when you took it out of its box on the first day).
Do not use Wipe Data unless you have stock recovery.
If you have twrp or cwm you will probably brick your tablet!
Thanks guys. I've been trying the Power+Volume Up combo to try to get into recovery but it's not working. Maybe I am not doing it right. The tablet is still on factory ROM. Not rooted nor unlocked.

Power and volume down to get into the bootloader. This is the one you want.
Power and volume up to get into apx mode.
Thanks. I will try that.

Do you know what firmware version is your tablet currently on?
i have a safe way to factory reset it but i need to know the firmware version to make it's safe for you to try

Care to tell us exactly what you're doing? For me, the easiest method is to power down, then hold the volume up button and press + hold power (holding volume up while powering down works as well for me-- yes, I still lift and press the power button again to reboot.).
You should shutdown your tablet.
Then you hold down the power button AND the volume-down button.
After the screen turns on you can choice wipe data by volume-down and confirm your choice with volume-up.
Now your tablet should run with the factory settings. At your first start you choice your country and your wifi, so your problem should be solved

[Q] HOX stuck in bootloop with no access to bootloader

Ok.. I'm about to lose hope, please any creative ideas will be much appreciated..
I think i did a big mistake trying to update to the latest nightly release of CM 10.2 using the auto-update feature of cm 10.1...
The end result is a bootloop, gets up to the CM rotating animation for a few seconds and reboots.
on top of that:
unable to get into bootloader using pwr+vol up nor vol down
unable to access device using adb nor fastboot - shows no device connected
the PC does not recognize the device though there are drivers installed, the charging LED lights up but no PC activity
all of the solutions i've seen assume either the recover/bootloader is available or the phone is accessed via fastboot/adb.
in this case neither are correct....
for some time i wanted to upgrade to htc one but not yet....
please help
Press and hold power until the phone shuts off.
Then let go of power and press and hold volume down until bootloader comes up.

tried it again several time, but as I said it doesn't work.
I get a black screen (not the CM animation) and than reboot all over again.
You could try letting it drain completely. Then charge a bit and try again.
Is your phone plugged in while your trying? My phone will not enter bootloader while its plugged in.

You are mostly likely not performing the button combo correctly. If there were no bootloader (hboot), the screen would not be coming on at all. Not getting into bootloader is almost always a case of not doing the button combo correctly. The one possible exception, is if your volume rocker has failed (and simply not registering the vol down being pressed).
Make sure you hold vol down, and do not let go until the while bootloader screen comes up.
Recovery is a different story, as you can indeed not have recovery installed, and the phone will still function. But hboot and recovery are 2 different things.

I wish it was the case,
when i try to go into hboot the device instead of going into another boot until animation cycle, goes into black screen boot cycle. which means most likely that the action (PWR+Vol) does have an effect otherwise it would have continued to go into same boot cycle through the CM animation..
besides there is a recovery installed, or at least was...
is there anyway to re-install the hboot part without the hboot/fastboot availability?

Nexus 5 stuck in boot loop and cant access boot loader

i flashed the latest nightly of AOKP today and then restored all my apps and data with titanium backup. When the restore was complete it prompted me to reboot my device so i did. ever since then i have been unable to reboot my phone as it is stuck on the start up screen. i then tried to restore from a backup of my other rom and then found out that i couldn't boot into the boot loader as when i held down the power and + volume button the startup would begin and then the phone would turn off. any ideas on how to fix this.
What it's happening is your stuck in a boot loop.
When you are holding power and volume down the phone is only interested in the power button part. Which is why it's powering off.
Just keep the buttons held both power and volume down. When it powers off keep them held and you should come into the bootloader

I have tried that but it just goes tocthe Google screen then turns off again

Not sure if the quote is a typo or not, but it should be power and - volume. You can also try power and both volume buttons, which will take you to the secondary boot loader.

I assumed the op was able to completely power down by just continuing to hold the power button and possibly had the wrong button combo.
What do you mean by start up screen?
You see the screen tells you "Google" and it stays there?

Hold your power button down for 30 to 60 seconds. You should be powered down. Then try to get into the boot loader. Vol down + power. Dues it get into bootloader?

Hi guys.
Sorry for bumping but I have the same issue and for me it wasn't fixed by going in recovery mode. I already tried deleting cash, and even tried getting back to factory settings. But still, when i restart the phone, the same loop keeps occuring.
At first it always just went to 'google' and then rebooted and rebooted. Now it just keeps stuck with the google logo (the 4 colour image).
Could someone help me possibly?
Thanks in advance

Hi Kevin,
Try LG flashtool. Link in my signature. If you have the 32GB version of the american nexus 5 (D820) you can use the converted firmware without any problem. It was tested numerous time.
You can also try to reflash stock google rom in fastboot mode http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701
If you are using LG flashtool and you get error about cant format userdata and/or cache or by checking the flashing log you see timeout errors then your phone have a fauilty emmc. If you are using the fastboot method and you see "remote: flash write failure" text in the CMD window then you have fauilty emmc. Your only option is to rma your phone if bought from google or claim your warranty from LG if your phone is not from Google and you have the receipt of your phone.

Nexus 5 D820 Bricked

Hi all,
My Nexus 5was running stock Android M till last week and I wanted Android N. So I rooted my phone installed TWRp and loaded android N by @santhosh. Everything went well but at times some apps kept crashing including TWRP. So I decided to to do a clean wipe. I did a clean wipe from recovery but after that my phone is not booting up. It's stuck on bootloop.
I am not able to boot into recovery mode also is there any way to save my phone?
Pardon my English.
Are you able to access the bootloader (hold power button + vol down until the phone boots)
I suggest using NRT to flash a stock ROM.

No i can't. It will go to bootloader When I press volume down + power but only for a second or so.. After that it'll bootloop.

Sounds like a dead power button?
Not sure, never had this problem.
But that is a common issue
The fact that the phone is not detected by the phone makes it difficult to re-flash a stock ROM.
If it is a power button issue, I recommend removing the motherboard, cleaning around the power button with pure isopropyl alcohol., quickly press and release the power button using a bit more pressure that usual, replace the motherboard, and try again.
