You can't unlock the bootloader if you have the t-mobile version

That depend on your service provider. Majority will void and u can only relock the bootloader to the original state if u have the TA keys backup.

You need to unlock the bootloader if you want to root, install a custom recovery, install custom roms and so forth.

Is the bootloader unlocked? if not check on moto site and confirm your Android version under phone- About.

Cheers

What you just posted is the same thing as this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-m2/orig-development/rom-cyanogenmod-12-developement-t2971213
Is the phone sim locked? If it is, you need to sim unlock it in order to unlock the bootloader. Debranding just removes bloatware
Thanks David I would guess it's sim locked due to me buying from ee cheers

Dial *#*#7378423#*#* . Then go to -> "Service Info" -> "Configuration". If there is:
Bootloader unlock allowed - No << this means that your Bootloader is Locked and can't be unlocked
Bootloader Unlocked - Yes or root << this means that your bootloader is unlocked
Also If X is on NETWORK and value is different than 0, you can unlock your phone. If it is 0 unlock by code is NOT possible.
Thanks I have [X] Network 5 so looks like I need to get a sim unlock code too
