RE: GMAIL, HANGOUT, MESSAGES, CONTACTS irritating design decisions
I was using Google Hangouts but am fed up of the way it hides the last message of a thread when the keyboard comes up. If i try and drag the message thread upwards to see what's obscured by the keyboard the keyboard itself then disappears and I'm back to square one.
I've looked briefly at the android default messages app and that's even worse. The valuable screen real estate is eaten up by a left pane when displaying a message thread. Yes you can minimise the pane by dragging left but then you find the messages don't resize to use the screen real estate you've just freed up!
Can anyone recommend a decent messaging app please?
PS Actually the default contacts app does the same, I can't seem to find a way to see a contact, full screen, so a sizeable portion of the screen is taken up by the pane containing a list of your contacts.
PS Also I've just remembered Gmail does the same. When you put your tablet in a landscape position when viewing an email you would expect to see your email full screen. No it squashes your email slightly and gives you an extra pane to view your list of emails without giving you the option to change this.
Does this p|ss anyone else off?

I was using Vito's SMS-chat for awhile and really like the thumb friendly interface. One problem that I noticed though was that if someone sent me a MMS, SMS-chat cannot handle this and will only show you the subject title. So then if you were to close this you would never realize that you actually had an image waiting for you to be viewed in your messages folder. Also another bad thing about SMS-chat is that if your using S2U2 and its on the lock screen and you get a SMS, the giant white notification window pops open (and stays open) on top of the lock screen rather than just being a little bubble counter like the other notifications.
So my question is, can I just use SMS-chat as a means of composing new text messages because the interface is more finger friendly and only for that. What I mean is, how do I have SMS-chat installed by yet make my phone use the stock SMS/MMS handler to alert, accept and view new incoming/waiting messages?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
As much as I like TouchFlo, there are two annoying issues I can't find workarounds for. The first is regarding contacts tab. I have a ton of contacts and as much as I like the favorites layout its a pain to get to my whole list of contacts through the interface. I think it might be better to just have a click of the contacts tab open up the whole phonebook. Any idea how to pull that one off?
The other issue is mail. I like the layout of the TouchFlo interface, but I hate the fact that when I click the opened envelope icon it just opens up that individual email. Its convenient if you only have one new message, but I get a lot of emails and its a pain to have to click the Inbox button in the button left corner. Any idea how to make a click of the opened envelope toggle the entire Inbox?
Am I just being lazy about this or does anyone else find these issues annoying? Thanks in advance for any advice.
I am new to WM and I love all of the customization that can be done. I am looking at a few different apps to run along with SPB Shell and I can't decide what to do. I have three apps I am looking into all with pros and cons. If anyone can help point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks!
Phone Extension
The main thing I like about this app is the fact that it has a dialer. Dialers seem to be few and far between on the Omnia (WQVGA). Everything else here is good but doesn't really jump out and grab me like the other two. When scrolling through the contacts it tends to get jumpy somtimes.
PocketCM
I love this app (especially with the htctoucher gloss theme) but it is missing two key components: a dialer and a call log (I know you can look at it along with sms, but I would like a separate one). My favorite part has to be the SMS feature. It looks so professional and I love the text bubbles. It does have a tendency to jump around and not run as smooth as the Resco Contact though. With a dialer and a call log I would definitely go with this (if I could get it to run a little smoother that would be better too). I saw that Htctoucher has a gloss dialer that goes well with the contact manager but it doesn't work in WQVGA.
Resco Contact Manager
This program runs the best of the three but I would like for it to be skinable or at least have another color option. It definitely runs the smoothest of the three, but it also is missing a dialer. I like how it has a threaded read of your text messages but I wish it had one that functioned more like PocketCM's. One that had the look with the text bubbles, and one that allowed you to type right at the bottom of the screen while still seeing the other messages. This program does run with two flaws though. The phonepad doesn't stay up when I hit the button sometimes and the taskbar displays at the top over the program.
In all I am looking for an SMS app that looks like the one in PocketCM, very professional and lets me type while seeing my old messages (I tried out SmileySMS but it's not nearly the same). If possible I would like that to be integrated into a contact manager with pictures in the contact list and a call log to show all incoming, outgoing, and missed calls. And finally a dialer that goes along with the other two. Oh and if you could get all of that to run smoothly together that would be amazing.
Thanks!
(I am know I am being picky, but I figure I would see what thoughts others had. Thanks in advance!)
First off am running StarDroid 3.2.1 I don't think it's rom related but user related
I have added pictures of 2 people. They do show up in the phone when I edit the contact. They also show up online when I hover over the contacts name. However they won't show up in the people app or the phone dialer when I scroll to them.I get those grey silhouettes. I do however have one picture visible in there as that contact is linked to a google+ account and that person has picture in there profile.
I do have to say searched the forum for this and came up with this path /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/files it does have the thumbnails for the pictures of the google+ people but not of the non google+ people. The pics that are in my gallery are the ones not showing up.
Am I do something wrong? I thought by editing the contact and adding a picture it would show up in the people app and in the dialer. I haven't tested any other functionality of have a picture added to a contact
Also want to add that the pics that I used from the gallery do show up in the people widget when added to a home screem.
Well after google searching and looking on other forums I finally found my answer
"Go to the Linked icon (upper right corner), then press the menu button. It will give you the option to select contact photo. Click it and it will show the photo options."
I then selected the photo cropped it to what I wanted and I was good to go.
Sorry if this is the wrong forum for my question but I thought I would start here. I have an Nexus 5 and love AOSP style SMS applications. I don’t like how most show incoming pictures as a slide show. To be specific if someone sends 1 picture it displays as normal, if someone sends 2 pictures at one time it displays as a slide show. Hate it! I know some SMS apps don’t do this but it has been my findings that AOSP style SMS apps do. I really like Slide SMS for the customization and the close AOSP styling but the incoming photo processing drives me nuts! Is there and easy fix for this? Any input from the community would be great. Thank you in advance.
