So I should be able to just plug the phone in and tether away? Sorry, I am new to this, and have never tethered before. I have CoNcast, but it would be nice to be able to take my laptop with me, and use it while out and about.
Does the tethering option have the built-in wpa2 encryption? As I am assuming that is a security thing - again new to all this.

If you use wifi-tethering, then you might not even need to plug in... the only reason to plug in would be to feed your phone power, rather than depleting it uber fast while tethering.
wired-tethering (the other kind) is also built in, but I can't tell you how to do it. I always use wifi (so I can "enable" multiple devices simultaneously)

Ohhh, Ok - so I don't have to plug it in - I thought I had to. So I should be able to just (for example) take it to the park on my lunch break, and be able to set the phone next to my laptop and get connected...?
Sorry for all the questions, just curious how this works - as I'd like to take advantage of it. Thx!

Wireless tether for NS4G
I just rooted my wife's and her mom's NS4G that i got them, installed wireless tether app just like i did on my evo, but the NS4G will only let me setup a ad-hoc connection, no option for wpa2 setup?
any Thoughts on what i'm doing wrong?
Reviving a thread from December lol
With the wireless tether app ad-hoc is the only method supported on the nexus s. It does not do infrastructure mode like your EVO did. If you use the native tethering app it will work in infrastructure mode it will not work with 4g though only 3g.

Download the "tethering fix for Android 2.3.5 ROMs" onto the phone and flash via clockwork recovery. This will enable the built in tethering app (accessible from settings>tethering and portable hotspot) which will allow infrastructure mode.
Hope I helped
Is there any jb roms that has wifi hotspot working?

My guess is that most jb Rom's have Wi-Fi hotspot/tethering capabilities. I can confirm that the one I have (Superlite CM10) works as I used it this past weekend.

YW. I went through three different roms, including earlier versions of Superlite. The new version (7.0) has been really stable for me. I can go a week without a crash. The only thing not working at the moment are specific retail apps (Starbucks and Groupon).

This is my exact setup, done back in mid October:
SUPERLITE_CM10_JB_7.0SR.zip
gapps-jb-superlite_0726_nocalndr_nosetup.zip
calender_with_provider_V6.zip
deskclock_V7.zip
Email_stock_V6.zip
exchange_V5.zip
full_keyboard_v7.zip
I used CWM and followed the OP's exact steps. As he stated, you can download any missing Google apps from the Playstore. If you are wondering, I installed "exchange" because I need it for my job.

What part of tethering exactly isn't working for you? I've got an interesting case that I'm trying to resolve. Tethering works fine for me on 3G & HSPA , but as soon as I get an LTE signal my tethered devices lose connectivity, though the phone itself is still good. I tried one of the earliest nightlies and I just tried the stable release, same story. I've flashed every radio I can find recommended for the skyrocket and CM10. Sadly I have to use tethering daily for work so I've had to roll back to CM9.
Tethering is working fine on CM10 nightlies and stable with regular or 4.2 gapps.

Hey Thanks for the reply aycockonxion. So you've used it successfully when connected to LTE? I wonder what could possibly be wrong with my device then, wow...
I've tried radios but I really don't think that's the case since LTE works great, and even while a device is not functioning while connected to the hotspot, the phone itself still maintains a good fast internet connection. It sounds like it's a software problem all the way in my limited understanding of things. The funny thing is too that the devices connected to the hotspot will think they do have internet. As in, the browser will sit there trying to load a page until it times out. The moment I shut down tethering, the browser immediately recognizes the connection is lost and won't even try to load the site. Also bear in mind the moment I reinstall CM9 it all works perfectly.

I tried the superlite jb stated above and the hotspot worked without the gapp
so I installed gapp and didnt work afterwards.. I guess something must be in the way

Hey tmimaesk, yeah that's exactly what I've got. I've not tried superlite without gapps as you have, I expect the phone isn't practically functional without gapps installed, so I won't bother trying. I'm glad I'm not alone with this problem (sorry), but misery does love company! thankfully CM9 works great so it's not the end of the world, just a pain to not have the latest and greatest!

Yea for me I switched to paranoidandroid cm9 version and I love it!
Prob going to switch to cm10 when hotspot is working
Hotspot works just fine in every CM10 ROM I've ever tried (3 or 4 of them so far.) Most recently I've been using car vs. driver's CvD-Nibbles and it works like a champ. I was running wifi tether all day long for almost two weeks thanks to Hurricane Sandy taking out my cable connection.
Tether aside, Nibbles is a brilliant ROM and I recommend it to anyone looking to try something new.
Worked fine on slimbean 3.0 and r4ins aokp November 4/8/16 builds

CM-10.0.0, AT&T, Wi-Fi hotspot works on LTE and HSPA, open and WPA2-PSK.
Hmm I heard that LTE hotspot works if there's no encryption for the SSId
but mine never worked with encryption since I use my hotspot in public places
I dont know if theres anything different from AT&T and Rogers..
I use Rogers and may be Ill try the above roms tonight

Thanks for all your replies. So, whatever this problem i have is, I'm not the only one, but I am in the minority. I wonder if it's a Rogers thing here in Canada. I hope it attracts the attention of those who are actually able to do something about it.

Hey guys. Can some one please tell me what i should do on my Nexus to get it to connect to the PS3?
So I've scoured the forums looking for my exact problem but to no avail. I am trying to connect my wifi hotspot to my ps3 to watch netflix basically. I can get the wifi connected from phone to computer with no problem (thats what im using now). However, when i scan my PS3 for wifi signals, the only thing thats comes up are the usual wifi signals from the neioghbors. I've tried all the settings i can find on the web but nothing works, like changing device info to Optimus 2 and softap. I'm using a rooted Nexus with the Wifi tether app. under Settings, Change device, i dont see my phone make or madel. Maybe that has something to do with it. I have no idea... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Sincerely,
A guy who just wants to watch netflix on his stupid ps3

Hey xda-community
little question. Does anyone know how to use Wifi and LTE at the same time?
I using a OBDII scanner with WIFI connection and will use my Internet over LTE @ the same time because some apps for the car needs Internet-connection.
Thank you for helping.

Try enabling Developer Options and then toggling "Keep mobile data turned on". See if that helps. And by the way what ODB II scanner/diagnostic program are you using that requires both WiFi (instead of bluetooth) and internet to function? That sounds like an incredibly poor way to simply run codes and whatnot.
Tried and doesn't work. I use SmartControl (Paid Version). Since i use the Superman-Rom, it has a bug and need to verificate with PlayStore if i start it. (Fixed with LuckyPatcher now xD)
But i need the connection for realtime traffic-informationen from google and other similar apps. My car hasn't the realtime-traffic information function. :/
Best option might be to eat the loss and just buy an OBDII scanner with Bluetooth instead of the WiFi version.

I've never actually used the wifi version, but I have no issues with speed or sample rates with a bluetooth scanner. Though I spent the little bit extra for a high quality scanner vs one of those generic $15 ebay specials. Nothing wrong with those if you want to just occasionally check codes, but if you're doing logging and stuff, they're not really that reliable.

I use the OBDLink LX scanner. Currently $49 on Amazon http://a.co/eXdi9J6 It has great refresh rates, and a secure connection so not just anyone can walk up and pair with it.
The OBDLink MX is a little more but supports a few extra protocols if you need it.

Stumbled upon this earlier today... download the QuickShortcutMaker app from the playstore.
Open it up and do a search for TEST. The last option to come up should be com.test.LTEFunctionality. Expand that, and click on the LTE test underneath of it. Then click TRY in the app. Scroll down to LTE APN Setting. The APNs are fully editable, and survive multiple reboots. I was able to add DUN, as well as proxy settings from adblock. wooo whoo! Apologies if this has been metioned elsewhere, but I haven't seen it.

10Gigs/month? I go through that in 2 days, sometimes pushing over a 100gigs a month on LTE prepaid for only 50 bucks a month.
In 2017 you can do better than that, not having to dread the friggin' data limits
Just check around, there are plenty of nationwide prepaid offerings, and with a little tweaking you can do it too.
You're the best!
