Kids friendly mode on Jellybean - General Questions and Answers

So, I am in the process of baby proofing an older galaxy tab 2 with a UI much like that of the S5's kid mode. Ideally I would like this to be as smooth as the kids mode on the S5 where there are no pop ups saying this isn't allowed when a button is pressed or some other bypass is introduced. with that being said I have successfully disabled mini Apps, locked in a kids only launcher with parental control, given access to certain apps. Deleted the google now option. the only button that is giving me any gripe is the multitasking menu button. I post in the general questions because this shouldn't be a device specific issue if this UI goes mainstream, it would more so be a firmware issue. Any help is great.

I've had it with Lollipop

Lollipop seems to be the worst update I've had in years. I was in the UK and suing the Vodafone network (a mistake in itself), and it kept hassling me to update. In the end I did, and the patch that followed. I am not at all happy. I am on 5.0, and not 5.1, but I have read that 5.1 does not fix much.
My main grips are:
No actual benefits?
Alerts are silly, especially with the lock screen. They have mad a mess of this.
Removal of the privacy mode, which is vital to me as I use the phone as an alarm (even in 5.1 you can't allow the alarm and stop calls etc AFAIK)
Email alerts all show blank and are not removed when viewing the mail unless you click on the (useless) notification itself.
Connections with my Gear 2 are lost, and it does not connect again. The Gear thinks it is, so refuses connections
Task list is awful. I struggle to pick out which app is which. The old was was far simpler.
No longer a media controller on the lock screen unless you have notifications set on.
Automatic brightness stuff up, and makes the screen flicker.
? Can't think of more now (but there are), these are the most annoying to me.
This weekend I'll be doing a factory reset and re-installing the available Kit-Kat here in Oz. I'll refuse Lollipop until all these issues are fixed, which probably means never.
• Yes. The actual benefit is that since the launch of Android it is the first iteration which changed the way Android works, by moving to ART from Dalvik. Now I don't know how much better is ART than Dalvik, so don't ask.
• Yes. I hate that too. You mean the persistent notifications on lock screen right? Well you gotta deal with that it seems. I have tried to find an app or an Xposed module, but I haven't found any. If you do find something then please let me know. And I am sure you know how to disable that bloody irritating Headsup notifications.
• I have never used Privacy mode of Samsung, but my phone is almost always on Silent. But I have noticed that the Do Not Disturb mode is reintroduced in last update, OF3. In any case we should be thankful to Samsung that they have brought back the actual Silent mode of KitKat. Shame Google.
• I use AquaMail, and I don't notice any problem at all.
• No idea, no wear units.
• Disagree with you. I really like the new task switcher. Yes, you need to be a bit picky, but not to any extent of causing any annoyance. Personal preference though.
• No idea! God work life is killing me, haven't listened to music in months!
• Yes, this is a really irritating issue, however for me the auto brightness doesn't increase, but decrease actually. And no the screen doesn't flicker, at least haven't noticed that so far on OF3.
• .............
If you were happy with KK, then simply switch back. At initial stage I was anger with Lollipop too, but mainly because of disappearance of Silent mode and then those damn notifications on lock screen, but as the former is solved now, and I simple love Light backgrounds than darkish ones, I can't think about moving back to KK. And now when Xposed is all but working I can't even think it
Best of luck.
you should have posted this on samsungs forum, not on a hacking forum that has no affiliation with samsung

Quick settings editing.

Hey,I came from an M8 where there was a tab on the quick setting to edit the order of the settings when the notification bar is two finger swiped. How do we do that in marshmallow?
I think you are referring the "System UI Tuner" feature of Marshmallow. I tried to activate it, without any luck. Maybe HTC Sense disables it.
http://www.androidcentral.com/inside-marshmallow-system-ui-tuner
Just tried it, no luck either. There must be a work around.
No luck
I cannot get this to work. I have an A9 with Sprint. Developer options are on, animation is on, and I've tried every scenario in this thread. The main reason I'd like to change the quick settings menu is I see a security flaw (I'll call it). When the phone is locked, whenever you wake the screen you can still pull down the quick settings menu. So if my phone gets stolen someone can turn off my mobile data and/or Wi-Fi. Problem then is I am not able to lock, wipe, or locate my device. This obviously has to be an oversight on Google but I'm sure it'll be addressed someday
SystemUI Tuner is NOT on the Sprint A9 at least if not missing on all.
I'd suggest reaching out to @moversi and JasonMac at HTC regarding this, as it doesn't line up with their press to bring a more slim sense and stock Android here.
In my opinion HTC has been faulty for awhile at removing bone stock Android features, all of which should be present on the A9 with its slimmer sense.
-MultiUser support
-Ambient Display(have Amoled screen now)
-SystemUI Tuner
-Adaptive Sound I believe is another
HTC did a great job at enhancing Android for many years but now Android has evolved to the point where we are seeing stock features removed completely.
Hopefully they address this, but it's not likely unless they hear the outcry as things like multiuser have been absent for a long long long time on Sprint at least.

That figures, thanks for letting me know this so I'm not going crazy anymore. Would I have this option if I root the phone? I'm really leaning towards rooting (as soon as Marshmallow is figured out) so simple things like this are possible.
Hey guys, I'm also really missing the quick settings editing feature. Is there an HTC support forum where we could bring out this issue?

Who is shocked that Bixby is as bad as we all thought? Not me!

Bixby does appear to be as bad as everyone thought!
Complete ripoff of Google Now which beat it to market by almost 3 years.
Swipe right into Bixby! (how innovative!)
Bixby formal Launch fail, no voice recognition services due to what can only be accounted to a lack of Samsung resources. Delay announced Launch week!
Samsung suddenly redirects resources that couldn't get Bixby to market in time, to disable Bixby button remap functionality! Amazing!
OP tries to give bixby a chance with Spotify: Bixby understands to look for Spotify speakers via bluetooth but not for Spotify connect/chromecast clients (precisely the sort of shallow understanding based fail that everyone knew would occur)
Samsung finally pushes new firmware to disable remap bixby button via accessibility services!
New samsung firmware apparently makes bixby button slow to respond! Even bixby no longer opens quickly!
Several Bixby remappers (post Samsung update to block remap) appear on market, all with different strategies (Props to the dev community!)
24 hours later, bxActions is updated, supports full, lag free perfect bixby button remapping even after Samsung's update. (There may be others but this one works as good as anything)
Samsung is pwned, again...
Hey Samsung, why don't you concentrate on non recallable hardware and zero battery explosions instead of forcing your awful forced software down peoples throats. No one wants it!
(The keystrokes above could have spent spent acclaiming the S8 hardware, AoD, Facial Unlock, Knox, Samsung Pay, and a multitude of other native benefits but Samsung chose a war they lost in 48 hours that no one asked them to start)

Android 9.0 stupidifies DND and Recent Apps.

(Moderators please move this topic if I am in the wrong forum).
My Pixel 1 received the 9.0 update and I HATE IT.
Google modified the controls over "sound on", "vibrate only", "silent" to Priority and DND many times. With Android 7 and 8 I was satisfied. But now.. they have completely stupidified Android!
A better explanation can be found here although this article is way to kind describing it:
https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/...-not-disturb-settings-simplified-single-mode/
Two problems I now have:
1. It is possible to mute your phone while you can still actively control the volume using the side buttons. It is totally unclear whether the phone is actually silent. See screenshot 1.
2. When DND is on (in my case it turns on automatically at night) there is no way to turn it off with the volume buttons anymore. You actually have to go into Settings.
3. When in a meeting and you want to turn in on, normally you could use the volume button down but not anymore
Please, is there anyway to get control over DND via volume buttons again? Some kind of setting I can change via ADB?
Then the other major change: Recent Apps. You no longer have an overview of your recent apps! You cannot just tap the app you want. Instead, your current app screen zooms out and you can scroll left to find out what other recent apps you have.
It's like going back to the stone age. I cannot believe the reasoning behind it. Is there a way to revert back to the better Recent Apps
I am not a programmer or developer at all but these dumb decisions from Google made me wish I was an Android dev who could write an app to change this.
It's also quite frustrating all the big websites write how Android 9 has AI and will improve your life because hey you are probably addicted to your phone.I haven't noticed any AI informing me of app usage. Also all the articles don't say anything about how an update could also be a huge step back I
This feels like a dumber version of Android
Maybe you would prefer LineageOS on your Pixel, instead.
Just found this, I don't know if it will help:

That looks like a nice app! I try to avoid using my physical buttons to help extend their life... but that does seem nice if you use the volume rocker often!
I am using this app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.leedroid.shortcutter
it allows me to add new toggles to my drop down notification toggles and one is for volume controls..
Well there is a shortcut built into Android pi for vibrate mode: when the screen is on, press the volume up and power button at the same time and the phone will vibrate for calls and notifications

Question Looking for infos about custom features (knock off/gestures/fast actions)

HI, i was a nexus user in the past and i remember a lot of features from the community. In those days i return to use a google phone, even though google has changed many of its policies about warranty. I notice a lot of problems or missed features. I was looking there but i didn't find nothing so i just ask to be sure i'm in the right place or just i missed something. For example, will be great to add the possibility to double knock on the screen to lock the screen and not only press on the right button. Or, for example, add the possibility to increase things you can do when press the botton screen. Or it will be great to improve gestures, likes oneplus so i can write some letters on blocked screen and for example activate light or something like that.
Is there alredy something for those thing or is still all blocked/work in progress?

For locking the device without using power button, I use Lock App from F-Droid, because I'm not a fan of using buttons.
3 apps/modules come to mind that can expand pixel's capabilities:
1) TapTap - tap back of phone to do something, eg pull down notification or take screenshots
2) AOSP Mods: like a Gravitybox lite. I use it to center the clock in the status bar and display date and day of week. I can also Double tap screen to sleep, but it doesn't work too well
3) ButtonMapper: customize hard buttons for other purposes. For example, i hold my volume down button to take screenshots.
For all, or most, of the best stuff (like AOSP modz) you'll need root access and lsposed to run 'em...a lot like the nexus days, lotsa toys!
