[Q] Where to get stock recoveries and how to install them? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now that it's official that the Moto G will get android lollipop, there will be a lot of people who will need to restore the stock recovery on their phones when lollipop becomes available for our phones.
I have seen some dumps people have made of their recoveries but are there official recovery images available anywhere?
Do the falcon and peregrine use different recoveries as I assume they do? In my case, I need the XT1045 recovery.
Is there phone-specific information in the recovery that needs to be set when restoring the recovery?
Could we have an FAQ for restoring the stock recovery? I believe that we already have FAQs for restoring the stock roms. Once we have the appropriate recovery image file, isn't it just something like: "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"?

Thanks! Unfortunately, there is not yet a version there for xt1045 running 4.4.4 retail U.S. Do we know if the 4.4.4 recovery is the same as the 4.4.3 recovery? Or should I use the Cricket recovery since it is 4.4.4 and there is nothing carrier-specific in the recovery, is there?
I also found this:
[Guide] Moto G 4G LTE XT1045. Restore To Stock 4.4.3 KK. Explained. but it is also for 4.4.3, not 4.4.4.

I think I found the 4.4.4 retail U.S. dump I needed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55661608&postcount=18
Update: it appears to be only the rom, not the recovery. 8-(

4.4.3 and 4.4.4 recoveries are most likely identical. Cricket's 4.4.4 recovery will probably also work on your XT1045.

I can't find my model though, my stock firmware is:
21.11.56pergerine_reteu.teteuall.en.EU reteu KXB21.14L1.56 ||| XT1039 bought in Sweden, Europe.
Anyone know which Recovery would work for me? I guess the Android 4.4.4 (Retail Europe) KXB21.14-L1.46 CID7 for the XT1039 recovery would work fine? I just want to be sure I can revert And to install the Recovery, all I have to do is pushing and installning the recovery.img via adb&fastboot with the computer as usual?

Gone

As long as the recovery.img is from a 4.4.4 firmware - it will work. Retail EU is your firmware anyway.

A nice gentleman posted the 4.4.4 stock recovery image for me here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56205113&postcount=24

http://sbf.droid-developers.org no longer has the latest firmware images. 4.4.2 images may not flash since you have the 4.4.4 Bootloader.

How to update a rooted Moto G (XT1032) 4.4.4 to 5.0?

Hi,
the title says it all:
How can I apply the 5.0 OTA update on a rooted, unlocked Moto G XT1032 with CWM recovery?
I don't care about root anymore and I have used SuperSU to unroot the phone.
But in order to apply the update I need to install the stock recovery, otherwise the device will get stuck in a bootloop.
How do I do this? I have tried using MotoToolAIO and its "Flash Stock Recovery KitKat" button but get a
Code:
hab check failed for recovery
message every time I try.
Could you guys please tell me how to get the stock recovery installed on this phone? As I said I don't care about losing root and I don't mind relocking the phone if necessary. I would really appreciate any pointers you can give me. Possibly without losing my data & apps. Thank you.
This page apparently is supposed to contain all those stock files but it is broken: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=14
This manual seems to be helpful for similar cases, it did not help me, though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219
Download the stock 4.4.4 ROM for your phone, extract the recovery.img file, and flash it using fastboot commands.
You also need to be unrooted with the stock Motorola apps.

If you think that solves the proble, well...yes. But where do I find that file? As I indicated the only possible source seems to be unavailable currently. I can't find any other.
Does anyone here have an XT1032 DE singleSIM recovery image lying around?
As I am currently living in South Africa and internet is not reall stable it would be amazing if someone could offer just the recovery file instead of the whole 500-600MB dump.
I have a Canadian xt1032 running stock Telus 4.4.4 firmware. Not sure if that recovery would work but I could find it if you want to try it.
Don't forget to unroot too.
I unrooted too using SuperSU and managed to restore the stock recovery using MotoTool (find it on XDA). These are the basic requirements for installing an OTA. But after the OTA is downloaded and I try to install it, the process starts and in about 10 seconds it displays "Error" and boots to 4.4.4 again. Any recommendations?
^^did you remove any of the stock Motorola apps?
No, and Motorola Update Services is updated to the last version.

I doubt it - and fear what might happen if it goes wrong, to be honest. But thanks a lot for the offer. I was able to locate a Retail package for the DE version and will try to download the whole beast, hoping that the connection is stable for these 3 hours.
Even though nobody answered me, I found out what's going on. Lollipop OTAs cannot be installed on modified devices.
You could try out some custom ROM if you are unable to get the official 4.4.4. Carbon and CM11 are some customs ROMs I know of.
There are great unofficial ROMs on the moto g xda forum too!! Don't forget to have a look.

I'm thinking of Resurrection Remix 5.0.2
You could also check out mokee, crdroid, xperience. And don't forget to check out the ROMs in the forum list

One question man. I have 4.4.4 installed. Do I have to install stock 5.X in order to get lollipop bootloader before installing any ROM?

how did you manage to un-modify your device? I just bought the Moto G (2013) and have unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP and haven't had any luck installing ANY firmware after 4.4.4.... I'm always getting stuck on the bootlogo and have to return back to stock 4.4.4...

You need to have factory firmware and recovery installed in order to update via OTA.

[Q] Update XT1032 from 4.4.4 USA retail to 5.0?

After many soft bricks I ended up in stock 4.4.4 US retail. Although I did upgrade Motorola Update, it says there's no new system software (5.0).
How do I upgrade from 4.4.4 US retail (stock) to 5.0? Is there an OTA file for US? I already searched everywhere, but can't seem to find it.
I could also go to 4.4.4 stock Brasil or Argentina and then apply the OTA, but right now my phone only boots if I install a firmware via recovery (ZIP file), not flashing it with fastboot. And I couldn't find installable ZIP files for 4.4.4 stock Brasil or Argentina.
I'm not sure if you could get the ota update officially (as in the new software available thing).
You could try out the 5.0.2 version from some other reason or you could check out some custom ROM.

If your phone works on 4.4.4 Retail, it will probably work with Telus 4.4.4. I had GPE 4.4 on my xt1032 8 GB, flashed back to retail 4.4.4, then flashed to Telus 4.4.4, updated Moto apps, got the Telus OTA update to 5.02.
So where can I get this Telus 4.4.4 firmware? Is it flashable from recovery (ZIP)? Remember fastboot flashes don't work since the first time I softbricked my phone.

When you boot your phone into fastboot and you type "fasboot devices", it doesn't return you phone's serial number?
I don't think there is a Lollipop OTA for USA retail yet.

Android 5.0 USA Retail is not officially released. I would suggest audit13's method.

Fastboot does work. It flashes the firmware with no errors, but the phone won't boot afterwards. I don't know why, but it happens since I first softbricked my phone.
I used to have Retail USA 4.4.4 on my Telus xt1032.
If you really want 5.02, you could try flashing the stock Telus 4.4.4, update motorola apps, and install the 5.02 OTA update.

How to downgrade 5.0.1 GPE to Motorola 4.4.2 non-GPE?

I have a XT1032. In the past it ran Motorola (not GPE or anything) Kitkat 4.4.2. Three months ago I upgraded it to GPE 5.0.1, because of my stupidity for not realizing what "GPE" meant. I hate this GPE and have already done with it. Could you guys, please, show me a way to go back to Motorola firmware Kitkat 4.4.2. I don't want anything relating to GPE anymore. :crying::crying::crying:
My XT1032 is en-us version, FYI.
Download the stock 4.4.4 ROM for your phone from here: http://www.filefactory.com/folder/c6cdedc45a775d27/?sort=filename&order=ASC&show=100&page=1
Flash it manually using fastboot commands. Do no flash anything below 4.4.4 as doing so may brick your phone.

Thank you. Instead of downgrading, can I upgrade GPE 5.0.1 to Motorola 5.0.2, then wait for Motorola 5.1 OTA update? Is there any risk to switch between GPE and non-GPE (Motorola)?
The partition layouts are slightly different and I believe the data partition on gpe (ext4) and stock (f2fs) are not the same.

audit13, I really don't understand all the commands I need to type when using mfastboot. When upgrading my phone to GPE, I followed this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/general/gpe-ota-lrx21z-5-0-1-xt1033-xt1032-t2969847). Is there any difference? Could you show me some links to learn about how to use those commands? I don't know what I should type, what I should do step-by-step. Thank you.

What firmware to flash for Cricket xt1032?

I have a Cricket xt1032. The bootloader has been unlocked with Sunshine. I currently have the latest stock android 4.4.3. Id like to update to lollipop but Cricket never updated the moto g xt1032 beyond 4.4.3.
Ive been on filefactory looking at the availabe factory firmwares, but i have no idea which one to flash...which one do I flash to get me to lollipop?
Thanks
Ok, I did a little more searching and found the thread with the kitkat and LP stock firmwares.
It looks like i need to flash the retail us firmware
one of these?
Retail US - XT1032_FALCON-RETUGLB_5.0.2_LXB22.99-36_35_cid9
or
Retail US - XT1032_FALCON_RETUGLB_5.1_LPB23.13-58_cid9
so these packages flash the firmware, radio, and kernel?
EDIT: well i cant believe that worked first time! I flashed the 5.02...it was stuck on the moto boot logo for a little bit, and i was thinking crap, and then it booted into lollipop. It looks like my phone is giving me the option of taking the 5.1 OTA, so ill just stick with 5.02 for a while.
Thanks for all the help, lol
@el7145 - ROM, Radio and Kernel are all included in the factory firmware image.
