Problems flashing CWM recovery with Heimdall - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I have some problems while using Heimdall... Well, not me, a friend. The thing is I am doing this long distance and I'm sending instructions to her, or using teamviewer but still I am doing something I've already done in my tablet. No matter what I do, I have the same error over and over again!
I am using the CM tutorial (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_p3110).
So:
1. I have Heimdall, the recovery img file, and all the other files I need.
2. All the Samsung drivers and phone/tablet software was uninstalled.
3. Used zadig. The driver I installed was "Samsung USB Driver". The tablet was in download mode, and USB debugging was on.
4. When I executed the Heimdall command, I have this error:
"Initialising protocol...
ERROR: Unexpected handshake response! (x3)
Protocol initialisation failed!"
I have been looking everywhere but I can't find a solution for this. I have already done this like 10 times in my own tablet (same model) without problems.
Am I missing something? Maybe there's something wrong with the drivers?
Thanks!

When I had that problem, restarting Heimdall and my tablet fixed it.

Why heimdall?
Why not Odin ! No PC?

Installed KG4, need new windows drivers?

OK, so I have a small problem. I followed Chadster's guide on flashing KG4 using ODIN. Afterwards, the system booted up just fine, but when I went back into download mode using the 3 button method, windows said it was an unknown device. I've tried updating the drivers, uninstalling the drivers, using Zadig, and installing those sony erricson drivers that came with Chadster's zip file. Nothing seems to get windows to recognize my phone in download mode!
Any help would be appreciated.
UPDATE:
Using USBDeview, I managed to get the drivers working again so windows recognized my phone in Download mode. But, now Odin just hangs at "<ID:0/004> SetupConnection.."
Am I just screwed?

Try a different usb port and see if that works.

EDIT: My Issue was resolved. Just kept un-installing and reinstalling the USB Driver pack for the SGS4G from Samsung's web site... it finally picked up.
I am in a VERY Similar position. Except after I installed KG4, everything was fine, and USB drivers worked. But... I wanted to root KG4 using ODIN, and this Guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15973153&postcount=211
After the First Flash all was well, saw the red Fugu fish and all that. Booted back in to Download mode to do the second flash, and windows now says Unrecognized USB Device, and obviously ODIN Won't pick it up now. Am I missing something On the USB Drivers? I too did the Stock Samsung USB Driver pack, and the Ericson ones... no go.. Trying A different port also doesn't work...

What have I done?: Not bricked but phone can't be recognized any longer

I was trying to install Cyanogen 7 and my first step was a one-click return to stock that seemed to complete fine.
When I rebooted I go into Android 3e recovery. Each time I boot the recovery message says:
Update media. please wait
update media. finished
#manual mode#
--Applying Multi-CSC...
Installing Multi-CSC
Install default apk-files. please wait
Install default apk-files. finished
The phone is no longer recognized by windows even though I've tried several different versions of the Samsung drivers. (also tried different USB ports, different cables and different computers per my search results in here)
I can get into Download mode but the device is not recognized so its not recognized by any of the ODIN utilities to repair or restore...
Any idea what is going on - or more importantly what can I do to recover this thing?
Help?
Thanks!
First of all, I would try Heimdall One-Click instead of Odin. It's more reliable, and uses better drivers. Will it not reboot into Froyo? And which one-click package did you use?
I used the Heimdall One-Click and it seemed to complete okay. Trouble started when I rebooted. I can't seem to redo it because the the One click utilities don't recognize the phone as connected.
I always get the Windows message "USB Device is not recognized" and when I go into my Device Manager the phone is listed as an "Unknown Device"
I would strongly advise against flashing back to froyo or eclair as the bootloaders are out dated.. As.for.your phone not being recognized it could be a number of issues from anywhere to ypur pc.needs a reboot to your usb cable is bad. I once had the same issue and i reinstalled the samsung drivers a few times with no reults. Believe it or not what fixed my problem was a fresh install of kies (a program i never use)

I installed Keis, rebooted and it did in fact recognize and re-install the drivers. I then tried the heimdall 1-click and it failed on the attemped handshaking with Loke step. Now I am back to not being able to recognize the USB device again.!
ugh!

Heimdall uses completely different drivers
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777
Yes it installed the heimdall drivers successfully when I tried to run the on-click. Then it timed out. I now appear to be back to an unrecognized device again. Installing Keis, Samnsung drivers etc trying to get it to recognize the phone again. It easily goes into download mode.
Anyone got any ideas how I can get this thing breathing again?
Try rebooting the computer. Use a USB port in the back of the computer. Try a different cable. Open Odin before connecting phone to computer.

Tried all of this - still no love. Every once in a while it will search and install Samsung drivers but then it disconnects almost instantly.
I also fumbled through getting a Ubuntu up to try it in Linux but the download mode isn't found in linux either.
Running out of options here. Wondering if I've pooched this phone.

Its not broken permanently, I promise.
Well slap my a$$ and call me Judy!
After 1 million attempts (cords, ports. pcs, windows, linux) I finally managed to get back into my phone. I literally must have had this phone in and out of download mode several hundred times in the last 24 hours. One of my attempts finally worked in Ubuntu! Not sure why really - but I am okay with that at this point.
Thanks for all you help!
Darren
<smack> good job Judy.

[Q] Did I brick my phone? [Solved]

Hello all,
Firstly thank you for the great development and help the community is providing for GS4G. From the time I bought this phone (few weeks ago), I have been playing around with different ROMs. I try GB roms and ICS roms every now and then. Always go back to GB using 1 Click's.
Yesterday when I was going the 1-Click Heimdall, it failed in between with some error. After this, I am unable to boot into the OS or recovery or download mode. It comes to a screen which tells me that the firmware upgrade was interrupted and asks me to use recovery in Kies. I tried this, but Kies does not even recognize my phone anymore. Windows shows my phone as "unknown device". I tried uninstalling and re-installing Kies, but still no use. I hope there is some way to get my phone back.
I read somewhere about a USB Jig that could get you into download mode. I have ordered it from Amazon and it may take a couple of days. Meanwhile, if any of you can help, it would be great. Thanks!
youre soft bricked, this is fixable. The firmware upgrade interrupted screen is the same thing as download mode. try reinstalling the drivers which i think are found in the sgs4g BIBLE thread. after that, plug in your phone and make it go to the firmware upgrade interrupted screen and see if it installs the drivers. read lumin's guide. it explains everything step by step. im going to try to link it here soon.
EDIT: [GUIDES] Fresh out of box Galaxy S 4G | Heimdall One-Click For Dummies
this is lumin30's guide not mine, i just linked it. thank him.

Thanks. I had tried eollie's Heimdall Stock KJ6 + Root. But, I don't remember seeing the driver installation window show up. I tried reinstalling the drivers through Kies couple of times and re-booting. But, still didn't work. I will try what you suggested when I get home.
You should be able to fix it. Goodluck

Sounds like you need to run zadig.exe in the Drivers folder of the Windows distribution of Heimdall.
If that doesn't work, right-click on (My) Computer, select Manage, then select Device Manager. In the panel that opens, find your device, right-click on it and you can then look at its properties and potential change the driver there.
(Yes, this kind of shenanigans is another of the reasons I really dislike Windows)
Ok so what you should try is downloading the heimdall suite
https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/downloads
Extract and open the drivers folder and run zadig. Click devices/show all devices and if your phone is plugged in and in download mode it should see it. Install drivers and it should say drivers successfully installed. Then run your one-click jar file and it should work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498
The downloads in this post will also get you where you wanna go

I tried all this. But, still Zadig shows my phone as "unknown device" and does not install drivers for it. Tried USBDview to remove any instance of Samsung & Android from the drivers. But, still does not recognize my device. Any other suggestions.
Try different USB ports on your computer.
Install Ubuntu (not totally kidding on that one, it will install side-by-side with Windows)
When is that jig getting there? One time I had a similar situation and I built myself a jig and it worked like a charm. Phone goes straight into download mode. I dunno if this will resolve your situation but I'm pretty sure this isn't the first time we've seen someone with this problem and then after trying several different computers and USB cables we usually say maybe your phone's USB Jack is messed up? And then the thread goes dead.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Have you uninstalled any drivers? Download and install the drivers from the bible thread if you haven't. Like suggested, try different USB ports and different USB cables. Sometimes it takes more than one try for some reason.

Have you rebooted your comp at all?? If no that might be the problem.
SUCCESS !!
Thanks a lot for all your suggestions.
Here is what worked:
- I opened device manager and uninstalled ALL USB devices (Yes ALL, not just Samsung, Android etc) and unfamiliar Storage devices.
- Then I rebooted once so that all other device drivers could be installed.
- Then I rebooted a second time and let it install any remaining drivers.
- Then I plugged in the phone and it installed the driver and now it started showing the correct device name
- Now, I ran the Heimdall 1-click and it opened offered to re-install drivers. I did this.
- After all this, I was able to get 1-Click GB rom installed and now back to VB.
(I think the key was "uninstall all USB devices" and "reboot TWICE")
glad you got it to work. ive had my share of soft bricks with this device and it always takes something different to get it to run right. im starting to think that my computer is alive because of this reason because it just doesnt like to play nice sometimes. LOL

[Q] I9000 Flashing Sob Story - Help me please?

I'm trying to upgrade my old, data-free, I9000 2.1update1 to CyanogenMod. Turns out my I9000 is the devil incarnate.
At first I wanted to root it and install anything. Turned out my version (XFJM1) didn't have any CF-ROOT available. Tried to update to 2.2 via Kies. Kies didn't see my device. I gave up on that and rooted successfully with z4.
Then I set my mind on Cyanogen. Turned out I didn't need to root. Tried to DL the installer. Error parsing. Tried to DL the CWM apk. Error parsing.
Wiped, re-DL'd, no dice.
So, had to flash a CWM recovery. Downloaded Heimdall. Installed Heimdall. Heimdall worked.
Then I tried booting into DL mode. Three-button method not working. DL'd adb to force DL mode along with Android SDK and Google USB Drivers. Launched adb. adb listed no devices.
I proceeded into device manager and saw an error code 10. Tried to manually set the driver to Google USB. All it said was that the drivers were up-to-date.
I found an advice here saying to delete upperlimit in my registry under Class>Portable Devices. Did that. Didn't work.
Then I realized between all the wipes I forgot to re-set USB debugging on my phone. Did that. And now it's listed as SAMSUNG_Android under "Other Devices", not as MTP under "Portable Devices". I can't seem to find a method to get a driver to install, including the ones from the SDK, nor did I find other up-to-date drivers.
At this point I'm lost. I don't know what to do, nor what I am doing. I need a sign or something. Even moral support. Or cookies. All I've been doing for the past 6 hours is trying to do the very first part of the process. I'm giving up and calling for help.
Help.
If you are willing to help me, please know that :
-I am a noob with flashing and anything android-related.
-I am not much of a computer technician.
-I'm, however, not afraid of getting my hands dirty and opening the hood, provided I have loosely specific instructions and some kind of understanding of WTF I'm doing.
-I like French Fries.
-I love you from the bottom of my heart.
-I own an iPhone and I apologize profusely for that.
-I have very beautiful hair. It's fluffy.
Thank you.
