OTG? And external storage... - Galaxy Note 4 Accessories

20141017_215927
I currently have this setup.. The problem that I'm running into is connection.
When I connect it to the phone it will recognize the USB Storage device and then disconnect almost immediately.
Could it be that the stock rom does not support it?

I think that's the cable.
Happened to me too at my Note 8.0. I must hold the OTG cable if gonna use that
If the kernel in the rom not support it, it won't read the external storage at all

But the cable is 100% snug fit.

hmm that's weird..
have you try with others cable ?
or try those setting in other device that support the OTG

Haven't tried another cable... Maybe time to buy another one? Could it be the usb stick? doubt the usb stick has problem since it's so new

I have the same setup since the Note 2 and tried it on the Note 4 and it works just fine. I would try another cable or try another drive. I just tried with my external hdd and it works fine too.

Which cable are you using? Where did you buy? Seems like there are a lot of OTG cables that look the same.

Bought mine from Dealextreme long ago.

Try formatting the USB either NTFS or FAT32 and check! I remember that stock Rom/Kernel supports one specific format. Post back if you tried the above said

I think it's the FAT32, I can't use my external HDD which has NTFS format. But thats in my galaxy note 8, haven't got my note 4 yet as I'm waiting for the bronze gold one.

Maybe you should try it with other device man, if it doesn't work, then it's time the change the cable. I'm about to reply it earlier, but posting something on xda trough samsung web browser take me to vBulletin page, I don't know why.

It is FAT32 that is needed. I originally had my 126GB PNY drive (just like yours) formatted NTFS and it did not work.
Interestingly, it appears to also work with exFAT.

For larger files than 4 gb you need to format you media in exfat format. Just plug into your pc and format in exfat. Ntfs is possible with root and programs like paragon or nexus .

Yes it is. You need a host USB adapter like one of this
I have one 4 in 1 adapter that have USB, MicroUSB and Memory Slots, portable hard drive also work in it.

But, I would recommend that any storage you want to use with the tab be Fat32 format, since that is native.

[Q] OTG doesn't recognise my USB memory card

Hi, when I plug in my usb memory nothing happens, I installed USB OTG Helper and I get code 5, I already tried another memory card and it doesn't work either, however, I tried a mouse and it works perfectly, what can I do?
Maybe only FAT32 file system is accepted.
The usb disk is formatted in NTFS or FAT32?

I just checked and it is FAT32, I have never used OTG so I don't know what to do...
EDIT: I just checked OTG Troubleshooter and it even says the model of my usb memory stic so I'm guessing the issue is I can't/don't know exactly how to acces the data on it

It might be worth the $4 for Nexus Media Importer available on the Play Store. I tested it on the Moto G and it's working flawlessly. Keep in mind there's always the off chance your OTG cable is incompatible.
I have the same problem after updating to kit kat (only works wireless keyboard), in 4.3 all worked perfectly. All usb has mounted with FAT32 system.
Sorry for my english.

Are you sure that you used a third party tool to mount the USB? KitKat doesnt support OTG anymore/at the moment.

[Q] USB 3.0 OTG cable (WD 1TB)

Hi all, I wanna drop a query here.
Did any body tried to connect Western Digital Hard drive to Note Pro 12.2? I did everything, but really, I was disappointed because I wasn't able to connect it using OTG Cqble.
What format is it? I haven't been able to get ntfs to work yet, each of my drives show up as blank drives. I'm not about to change them to another format just for this tablet... migrating files off and then back on after formatting wouldn't be worth my time.

I was able to connect both an NTF and. EXFAT drive to my unrooted NotPro. Had to use special software of the ntf and then it was read only. With the exfat it is r/w and connects with native software.

You mean that if I will root my NotPro, then I will be able to connect my 1TB to it, and transfer files, or only reading?

If you are willing to root you can connect an NTFS drive and read or write to it. Not sure it matters what size
If you are not willing to root you can only read ntfs but can read/write an exfat drive. Mine is 1Tb. I believe exfat does have a size limit but not sure what it is.

Ironically is not as clear cut as that. I'm rooted and had issues with NTFS. Not sure why, but my 64 gb usb flash drive formatted NTFS would not work, neither would a 1tb Western digital passport. I tried stickmount, paragon and usb otg helper. Eventually dumping all three apps and formatting the flash drive to exfat was the only solution that would work. I'm only monkeying around so I'm not about to try to backup the hard drive to another one just to reformat it to exfat. I guess I'll buy a hard drive someday for this tablet. .. I'm starting to think that exfat is the most reliable way to ensure compatibility.

Well - yes and no.
I've just ordered this tablet and am very exited.
Regarding ntfs:
I tried this on my Note3. Yes i could read/write ntfs drives.
However I could only read 1 logical drive.
I had a 64 Gig stick partitioned in 2 logical ntfs drives. I could only access/detect one of them.
I read that this somehow relates to SE-linux in "enforcing" mode.
Couldn't figure out how to set to "permissive". A simple shell command didn't work. Yes I tried SU'ing the command as well.
Will try to find that post again.
If it is a se-linux related issue it stands to reason that it'll translate to Note Pro as well - doesn't it?
Regards
Elo

[Q] USB OTG mount problem

HI guys, I am very satisfied with this phone when I got it a week ago. However, I was facing sometimes my phone unable to mount USB OTG storage, I mean the USB drive won't lit at all / detect by phone, I have to reboot the phone then it only gets detected. Any other way round to solve this without rebooting?
I haven't had trouble using my OTG usb stick so far. Have you tried using Nexus Media Importer? It lets you mount/unmount on demand.
Does it show the USB drive as unmounted in the Storage menu?
Also, did you try a different thumb drive with a different filesystem on it? I cannot reproduce your issue at all.
Ok after my investigation, the USB OTG still works but just the USB port of my phone unable to supply power, if I use a power bank + USB hub then connect to my phone, my phone detects the USB drive. Similar to somewhat my phone requires external power to mount. But if I reboot my phone then the USB OTG work properly again though. Until I remove and remount it next time, then the problem occur again.
Currently my phone setup as my signature. No custom kernel but just recovery.

Ok I know whats the problem now. You can try during deep sleep insert in your USB OTG. It can't detect at all even if you remove and reinsert. Have to reboot the phone. So my guess is right I think. The phone have to screen on to insert USB OTG or else it cannot detect.
Did any one try a 1tb portable hard drive?

few older phones supported 500gig portable hard drive too but did not support 1tb, my phone will be delivered tomorrow I'll update here then.
Fingers crossed.
I just tried a 16GB USB drive through an OTG cable, and it didn't detect it. My screen was on, and I was running stickmount as well.
I had to restart the phone to get it to detect.
I have the same issue with my N8010. Have to restart to get it to recognise the USB.
Hopefully, there will be a simple solution to this.

Well it seems in my case it's rather random, sometimes USB drives (or HDD's) will mount, other times nothing happens at all, while some drives refuse to mount at all.
Maybe it's faulty cable don't know?
I have problem
I was able to mount USB 3.0 64 gb without any formating, and it shows in settings too, but now I can't see it in settings and in El file explorer it is very slow.. What should I do, I can't format to fat32
Same Problem
I can not get any drive to stay mounted, cable works fine on nexus 5 so do the drives but no luck with opo has anyone any info on this since oct 2014 post

Do you mean read/write to your PC HDD?
If not your phone does not have a HDD, instead it uses flash memory not formatted in NTFS

Well If it's a USB HDD it is unlikely to work as mobile phones don't offer enough power over USB to keep an HDD running (Not any that I have tried anyway) but if it is in another PC or NAS then you should be able to as there are many apps (Not that I can remember any but I'll have a look)
