I'm very excited to try out XBMC on the Nexus Player, for those of you who don't know what that is, we released a custom version for newbies which works out of the box yesterday:

Finally a big brand comes out with a real Android TV device, Amazon Fire TV is too closed up to be considered one.

I have been using the Fire TV, but the player looks very promising!! Hopefully google wont have a problem with rooting and unlocking the bootloader like amazon does.
I have an old mx2 box collecting dust, so I will try your new version this weekend when I get a chance to play around with it. BTW, love your Config Wizard for setup, hard to believe you have something easier to use!!
Thank you! TVMC is basically XBMC after running the Config Wizard, with a few extra tweaks, so you'll for sure enjoy it too!

Yeah, I've been using the FireTV also. Being in Canada, most of the FireTV apps don't even work here. But that's fine, since I mostly bought it as a simple/affordable way to use XBMC in my living room. Everyone I've shown it off to wants one as well. I'm really excited for Android TV however, so I think I might be selling my FireTV soon and moving over here. My only concern is how well the Intel Atom will perform. I've used them in netbooks before, and noticed they were severely underpowered! Hoping the newer generations are faster...
Great to see TVMC - I'll definitely have to check it out!!
For those unfamiliar with XBMC and wanting to experiment with other options, there's XBMC Official (soon to be Kodi), SPMC (originally for Ouya, but many people prefer this version on Android), and my current favourite, XBMC for Fire TV (doesn't require a FireTV to work - it's just optimized for Android, has some useful skin tweaks, and could be used as a launcher). No matter which poison you pick, I can absolutely guarantee you'll fall in love.
I use FireTV with XBMC and it's almost flawless but it struggles with h265 videos that start to pop up lately - I wonder if Android Player will be able to play them without a hitch?
I'm using an ADT-1 with Kodi and decided to try TVMC based on this thread. After installing, one thing I notice is that it doesn't generate a tile on the home screen. Think Kodi needed to take in a change to the manifest to show up in this way.
Pretty sure this was the info added to the manifest:
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LEANBACK_LAUNCHER" />

That is correct.
Oddly enough I see the proper code on Github but not on the compiled APK.
It's showing the above in the AndroidManifest.xml on tva-xbmc / tools / android / packaging / xbmc / AndroidManifest.xml.in
Code:
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LEANBACK_LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
Edit: Just recompiled and it seems to be working just fine on the ADT-1 as seen in the attachment.

Just to hijack things a bit, since you have XBMC running...Does the ADT-1 do audio passthrough over the HDMI? If so, I'd hope that the Nexus Player does.

I don't think I understand your question. The only outgoing port is the HDMI and it does handle video and audio. Never heard the pass through question outside of receivers or dvi outputs.

With the ADT-1 I do audio passthrough over HDMI. I have my HDMI connected to my TV which then passthrough audio to my surround sound via Toslink.
I think what he is asking is when you connect it to your av receiver does your av receiver properly see DTS and AC3? In other words do you actually get surround sound or does it convert the audio signal to stereo?

Curious about this as well. I just finished ripping all my BDs to mkv and kept the original audio tracks. Really hoping to still be able to get TRUEHD and DTS-HD via Plex on the Nexus Player.

well, keep in mind this thread is for XBMC not Plex, but with the Fire TV and XBMC you could play an MKV with DTS-HD and it would play it as DTS. However when a TrueHD file was played it played the file as Stereo. I never attempted to play a DTS-HD file in plex on my FireTv or Chromecast...... does that actually work? it passes the audio as TrueHD or DTS-HD?

Audio passthrough passes raw DD/DTS audio streams to your receiver so it can decode audio itself, rather than XBMC decoding the audio and passing it as PCM. Audio passthrough is enabled in Settings > System > Audio Output in XBMC (might have to have the Expert settings level enabled).
I'm probably not the right guy to ask. I have not problem with DTS in MKVs; however, even though I use a full surround setup, I set it to forced multi-channel stereo. I don't really care about surround sound and only care about bringing the holistic sound all around. Stereo separation is enough for me. New files are all DTS and work fine, but when it gets incorporated into my library, I reencode everything down to stereo AAC and strip out all secondary audio to save on the HDD impact.

Update - I didn't have DTS support checked in XBMC. Once I did that DTS, DTS-HD both work on the FireTV from inside XBMC. I also tested dolby digital 5.1 which also works but TrueHD results in stereo PCM no matter what.
I tested all of the above using uPnP, PlexBMC, and the SMB client with the same results. Native Plex client doesnt do DTS at all. Everything is stereo in my testing.
Hopefully the Nexus player will get True HD working. Would be nice if it all worked in Plex as well, but this is a good compromise.

That's true, but Plex works with a client and server combination. When using Plex, your server / NAS has to transcode the video files while your cliënt (can be any device) only need to show the already transcoded video. With XBMC, your client / mediaplayer has to transcode the video files., while your server / NAS only has to sent the file.
My NAS isn't strong enough to transcode video files, so using Plex is not an option. I think a lot of customers are in the same situation so I do hope the Nexus Media Player is able to run XBMC.

I have a 4 TB NAS appliances on our home network loaded with all our family's media. This works great for our other networked devices (blu-ray players, wii, 360, etc) and using the builf in file manager on the G I can map to the NAS. Problem comes whenever it hits some xvid/divx/mpg video files, it just won't play.
Any recommendation of an app that can do media from a network server?
There is a dlna app that comes with the droid x that I don't believe is tied into the framework. I will see if I can link the files for it.

Getting a decent uPnP client is on my list of ToDo's - I'm hoping that we can port the Archos video player over, just for that purpose.
Found a link to the APK, but I haven't tried it yet...

<edit> Parse Error: There is a problem parsing this package. when trying to install it via Root Explorer.
<edit2>Copied the link wrong which caused the parse error, APK installs correctly and the app runs fine as a DLNA server. ( I didn't verify connectivity), but it force-closes if you select "Network Settings Set up Wireless Access Points" possibly due to the TnT version of Settings?
either way, it makes your gTablet a server, not a client so you won't be browsing your NAS with this APK...
ah well, looks like we might be waiting for kernel source or a custom compiled kernel to get streaming video.

I found an app called UPnPlay in the market that is working really well for me. If you are familiar with the Archos media player this has very similar capability. If you haven't done the market fix you probably won't find it though.
I was just watching a movie streaming from my Windows home server on my G tablet. Played nice.. Took it a few minutes to initially find my server but it did.

Nice tip used it and rockplayer worked perfect
This is a nice app - tried it and it found my media player (PS3MediaServer) fairly quickly. It did crash once, but it's certainly better than nothing.
It plays audio and photos well, but video seems a bit choppy on my setup so far. I have all different types of containers / codecs so I might have to find the sweet spot - Xvid / MP3 / AVI's seem to play best.
Thanks for the find!
No mkv support, but otherwise looks good

I think it's limited by the video player - and MKV support on the GTab is very limited, unfortunately.
Fantastic Find! Thanks Sprdtyf350-
Nice!
This finds my MythTV server. I am able to play .wmv videos on the MythTV server, with the default player. But it is unable to play the MythTV recordings of OTA digital (HDTV). These are a form of mpeg-2 video, similar to what a standard DVD is. If we can find a player that can play DVD files, then I think it will play MythTV recordings too.
ORB LIVE is the answer.
Orb is the Answer to this... if we can make it work.... I use Orblive on my EVO and it works amazingly. I can stream from anywhere and it decodes most files. It runs over Wifi, 3g and if I am on the same network as my server, it goes direct without hitting the Internet. I works GREAT.
But unfortunately, it doesnt work right on my GTAB. This could be specific to my device, but it cannot stream the files. This sucks because this is one of my main uses for buying this device. With Flash fixed, I can stream through the internet via the orb.com webpage. But the App works much better. If anyone that understands the codecs of these things can figure out how to make the orblive app work, it would be amazing.
To the G tablet users using UPnPlay, how do divx files do for seeking/searching? I'm using UPnPlay on my Evo with both Rockplayer and Vplayer and neither searches or seeks particulary well..... or at all. If the video file plays with Androids native video player, it seeks just fine.
I don't want to be forced to always begin playback and the start of the video and not be able to resume where I left off if I have to leave the player/app.

This actually looks pretty interesting thing i may try this out for new years, want to be able to play music from my gtablet via my phone like control the music playing on the gtablet from my phone (as the remote control) wonder if this would work hmmm, def will test tonight.
Just downloaded Twonky from the Marketplace and it works for me, streams audio, movies and pictures from my home media server. Supports standard DLNA compatible servers from what I can read. Also allows you to stream from the GTab to other DLNA compatible devices as well. Menu is in portrait mode, but the video will play landscape.
Was thinking about the same and saw this post and went off and looked around. There are a couple of other apps around as well, depends what you are using for a source.
Try Gmote
I've been using Gmote for streaming movies to my Gtab. It also has a pretty decent touchscreen mouse controller for when you're couchbound. Setup is really simple, and the interface for browsing your media is nice looking. Downsides are basic controls only for watching/listening and portrait orientation only for navigating menus and using the "remote control" feature. Playing movies though (landscape, of course), is very snappy and has a surprisingly lag free seek feature if you want to look around for a point mid-movie.
This tablet is actually pretty powerful and I stream most of the stuff to it from my server just using the ES File Manager. It supports SAMBA shares (windows shares).
I am not sure.. but the other day I had it decoding a 720p mkv file at around 10fps but no audio. I am sure that this is a player issue...
All of my 640*480 and lower AVI files play without a hitch though.
Just noticed an update for the mobile.HD media player in the store. It now supports DTS audio. Works great, without any lag now!

I didn't get a notification either, I just happened to look! I immediately purchased it after. Well worth the 3.49 now! Ran a 1080p version of inception and didnt have a single slowdown or anything.
I'm pretty sure, actually, that they increased the price a dollar with this update. I'm 99% sure that it was $2.49 when I purchased it.
It makes sense though, if they feel the app is now closer to completion.
Cool - Hopefully they will add Dolby audio as well. So MKVs are playing good through it with DTS audio. Maybe I will havbe to buy it.

Uh, Dolby Digital was already supported.
Unless you're referring to TrueHD or something, I guess.
It stutters on some of the super-high bitrate stuff I have, but most 720p and 1080p stuff now plays perfectly. (Edit: Stuttering was because of playing a file stored on the network, see below post).
I noticed that there's no option to turn subtitles OFF for episodes that have them embedded, though.
Also, now that I think about it, I wonder if it's possible to bitstream the audio via HDMI out.
Edit: There's also an x when you tap on the screen that lets you turn subtitles off. It's not obvious though; it would make more sense for "off" to be a section in the track selection.

Hmm - I must be getting this confused with another player in the store that only plays 2 channel audio, when I was on the search for an MKV player a few weeks back. All of my MKVs have both DD 5.1 and DTS tracks (when I encode them). Maybe it failed because of the DTS track being in there when I tried it out.
I will have to give this one another whirl.
I just connected to my receiver via HDMI. So basically what happens is that this player decodes the DD/DTS track to PCM, and then the 5.1 PCM is output to the receiver / TV. So, the Dolby Digital or DTS light won't come on on the receiver, but it's still 5.1 surround. It's just the decoding is done in the player, and not in the receiver. There shouldn't be much of a quality difference either way though, though it would be nice if it did support bitstreaming.
Also, I take back what I said above about it being stuttery. That was only the case when trying to play a 1080p file over Wifi. I copied that same file to a USB hard drive, and it played back perfectly. This is with a file that's at a ridiculous 12mbps bitrate.
So yeah, nearly perfect for me. All it needs is an option to turn off the subtitles, and it's perfect. Bitstream support would be nice too, but I don't actually see that as a necessity. And then it also needs "Play To" support.
Edit: Never mind, I found the button to turn off subtitles, it's a little x on the screen when you tap on it. It'd make more sense for OFF to be in the track selection menu.
Takes a while to load (1-2 minutes), but once it does it seems to be playing DTS movies just fine. Purchased it last night, I believe it was $1.80 or something. I haven't tried it on a receiver yet, though.

Switch your surface's language settings temporarily to English-US, then go to the MS app store, download the apps you want. you can switch back to English-Australia and the downloaded apps will still be there.
It's a really great app, but it's not showing my subtitles... Their codification is ANSI, not UTF-8, but even when I convert them to UTF-8, the subtitles are not working. Anyone know some solution?

It already has embedded subtitle support. Try tapping on the screen, and there's a button with either a bunch of rectangles or an x on the top right (under the volume) to turn subtitles on or off. You can also switch streams by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.
Otherwise, if that's not working, what format are your subtitles in?

Probably because the Nexus Player doesn't support MPEG2 hardware decoding.

Read comment above yours. It will be visible if you install, for example, HDHomeRun view.
I read that if you run tvheadend 3.9 (unstable branch) you can do transcoding. If you transcode to h.264 this should at least provide a stream that NP can play.
https://tvheadend.org/
I originally had the HdHomerun Dual tuner (uses antenna, no native transcoding possible). It worked with nexus player using the HDhomerun view app, but wouldn't work in the live tv native app (which I think is the app this post is originally about).
However, I recently upgraded to the HDhomerun Extend (uses antenna, but CAN transcode). It now works in the native tv app, but still not 100% reliable. I'm very curious in how to get the PIP and other features shown in the live tv app listing on google play.
Could this be the foundation for hardware that has HDMI passthrough and puts an Android TV UI overlay over the top of your cable or satellite video source like the Xbox does?
Pretty much the opposite, they want to avoid using HDMI passthrough by having broadcast TV done over the Android Player instead of the TV.
I use tvheadend as well, if anyone obtains apk let us know see what we can do with a bit of transcoding. I use xbmc with the TV icon which is alright and works well enough but would love official solution....
Turns out the apk is in /data can anyone rooted obtain and upload it here - to work upon?

Can MX support DLNA? This is useful!
The best app for that is BubbleUPnP: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp&hl=en
I also would like to have the Option "inside" MX Player to set my TV as Output Renderer.
For instance, if iam at my Work Break, i watch something, e.g. it has an Extra SRT Subtitle, and iam at a Position inside the Movie lets say 20 Minutes in,
for when i get home, with Bubble PNP i have to search the Video, i have to Jump Forward to the Position i was, only to see, the the SRT File is not there.
I Tried Imediashare, Pixel DMS etc. no one gets it with the SRT´s.
It would be just perfekt, if you could add UPNP as an Output Renderer, like Youtube or Imediashare. Even other Mediaplayers do it nowadays.
thx in advance.
Youtube generally rides on proprietary Chromecast. Also, if you are truly using DLNA/UPnP, using MX Player won't help. When it's sent to the TV or whatever receiving device, the DLNA standard says that the receiving device does all the decoding, meaning that the receiving device needs to accept SRT subs.
Iam just a regular UPNP user, no chromecast, maybe next year with Screencast to chromecast2, so i can beam MXplayer output "as is" to the Stick.
From what i know, long time a go, i used the Samsung PC UPNP software, that came with my old Samsung TV, guess it was something 6000 series.
From that time i remember good, that the PC Software was able to start "feeding" the TV the Stream, at the last known and remembered Position of the Stream I watched e.g. a weeky early,
same as MX player so perfectly does.
Also the Software , as you say, streamed the SRT file to the TV, and this was accepting it. It was one of the main reasons, i bought a samsung in the first place.
so in short.
1. Starting the UPNP Stream at the Position of the File were MX player stands
2. Send the Srt file that is selected inside MX Player (e.g. the downloaded versions) to the TV
3. Remember the Postion the Stream to TV was interrupted (e.g. TV was shutdown)
if this is all implemented, MX would be king.
Except, BubbleUPnP already does most, if not all, of that. In fact, you can even use BubbleUPnP to manage your library, and also tell BubbleUPnP to use MX Player when playing files locally on the phone. BubbleUPnP will handle the DLNA streaming to the TV/TV-stick.
The PC software you are describing sounds a lot like what BubbleUPnP does on Android.
Tagging @bubbleguuum as perhaps he can comment a but further on what BubbleUPnP can do.
P.S. Hi bubbleguuum! You may or may not remember that MX Player forums used to be on Google Groups, but since last year we've moved to XDA Shout-out to @ktsamy for getting MX Player its own subforum.
I Still dont get, how i would use MX Player in conjuction with BubbleUPNP ?
from what i understand, these are two seperate Video Players, MX is for Phone, and Bubble is Phone and Stream to TV.
You make it sound, like i could/should use both simultaneously ? How would that work in real life ?
Thx for your help.
Within BubbleUPnP, you can specify the local renderer as MX Player.
yeah i tried that, but that is only helping bubblepnp to render the file locally to be able to read the file and then be able to stream it.
I want it the other way arround. I would like MX player to use Bubbleupnp as the intermediate Program to stream to the TV.
Cuz only then i have my last "MX player" known Starting Position inside the video.
If Bubbleupnp searches the Files in File structure, it always start from the beginning of the file, and have to search by hand, where i might was in MX Player.
or can i get bubbleupnp to read out that info out of MX player to jump to the time withing the videofile ? i guess not ?
thx for the help
You should ask that question in BubbleUPnP's support thread.

So, somehow, through my involvement or not, i got em to implement some "resume" feature into his Streaming upnp.
But heres the bummer, its useless for my scenario (wich is really so weird ?)
Bubbleguuum: The video resume feature is only implemented for streaming to external renderers.
For local playback, it's up to the video player app used to eventually implement it at all (eg MX Player does it by default),
but it is entirely separate from BubbleUPnP.
so back to square one, for my "local playing and resume later on TV" dreams.
could you maybe make an API for MX, were bubbleguuum could crawl the MX local resume time data for a given file ?
so he could maybe ask for "resume last local time, or External Rendering time", and than resumes at the Time MX Player Throws at em ?
thx for your patience
That sounds like a stretch usage case, as then you would still have MX marked as incomplete, even though you've finished watching whatever it is on the TV via BubbleUPnP.
not if Bubbleupnp could save its resume time back to MX Player over your API.
And it was just a suggestion, to how to solve "my?" problem, of not beeing able, to stream from MX Player to my TV.
I dont want the struggle with Bubbleupnp. I just want, that MX Player could stream something, dont care if i have to buy a googlecast stick, or what ever device. But now i am just stuck, with 2 Programs, doing the same thing. one is now also resuming, nice. but not local ?
and MX player is only resuming local. wth, thats now the end of it ? why isnt MX Player capable of Stream to an external renderer ?
is watching on TV and Mobile such an awkward usage case ? Thx anyway, seems like i am just a dreamer.

Native streaming is something that is on the developer's eventual todo list already. As to his status, I don't know.

ahhhh thx. only thing is, that this thread started like 2014. so is there really hope. i dont know, at least, iam not alone anymore with my wish. Maybe with chromecast 2 comin out, MX Streaming development is finished dont know why bubbleupnp is working, and MX not. Its really silly to sit in front of a 55 TV holding your phone, to watch stuff. thats some kind of 2nd screen generation
thx for your patience. iam off
