Best way to expand storage? - Nexus 9 Accessories

Never bought a Nexus before because of the lack of a micro SD card port. I was hoping some of the most recent rumors were true about the Nexus 9 having on but no joy. I will be buyingone though because I have got to tryTegra K1 64 bit and lollipop. Anyone ever try to expand storage on the Nexus 7 2 gen? What did you use? What about a WiFi external hard drive? I am open to any and all solutions.

I use a Corsair Flash Voyager Go usb stick with 64GB storage. It burst writes pretty good, so files under 60MB get written on it pretty much in an instant.
Larger files make the drive heat up pretty fast, and after about 30 minutes the write speed is down to 25MB/s.
If you use Win, the next part won't interest you: I formatted the drive into ext4, so I can store files >4GB on it. It performs better than NTFS or exFAT (exFAT is a pain in the foot!) but a little worse than FAT32 for whatever reason.
There are other comparable products out there, like the one from TeamGroup (M132, IIRC). The differences are marginal - I bought the cheapest.

That's what I am going to use otg with my 64gb Samsung class 10 micro SD card

@MRobbo80, which otg are you going to use with your card? I have a 64gb Sandisk 10 uhs-1.
Would something like this work, http://www.amazon.com/Leef-microSD-microUSB-Connector-Android/dp/B00J2D7R20/ref=pd_cp_pc_3
Do I need to be concerned about weather the card reader/write is either a USB 2.0 or 3.0?

No need for a card. This is the OTG and the flash drive all in one

I asked because in post #3 you said you were going to use otg with your 64gb Samsung class 10 micro SD card. That is were I became confused.

No, don't be concerned. It does not matter. USB2 can, with some controllers, reach over 25MB/s, which is more than you'll have with your micro sd card.
But I would not spend more than 2 bucks on it. Aliexpress has some better offers.
They don't live for long. I used this setup for quite a while, but after 4 months tops they died.
I would go for the Corsair Flash Voyager Go. Better r/w speeds, better support, etc.
Cheers!

Didn't saw the purchase tab, sorry
It says speed:, 45 MB/s read, 41 MB/s write
My sd card is 80 MB/s read, 50MB/s write.

Sooo glad I came across this topic post, definitely going with the 16gb nexus 9 now considering my college budget.

I agree! My room mate actually tuned me on to HD Tune. This program has a utility built in that will test, real-time, the write/read speeds on the card. Test it the moment you get it, for at least 20 minutes uninterrupted. If it doesn't match the specs it should, return it. If you use Ebay, I would suggest purchasing with paypal, as they have a buyer protection program which helps with issues of "fake" cards.
Sidenote: these cards aren't actually fake. They do work. the problem is they are using cheap parts and even cheaper labor for the manufacturing of these cards, so they may, and probably will fail. Either partly or all the way. what I mean by this is...For example.. you purchase a 32gb class 10 card... 2 months later, the card only reads as 27gb or some weird number. this is a fake. Still usable, but not what you paid for.
Good to know, thank you!

Micro SDHC Card

I'm updating the puny 2Gb placeholder in my Atrix 2. I finally settled on a little known name , Dane Elec, and ordered it from New Egg. Cost me $55 shipped and it's a class 10 card. They are the company making the new Duracell flash units. When I get it installed I'll come back and do a review if anyone is interested

I just ordered up a 32 gig class 10 as well. I was digging through all the data that seems to be split between the onboard and the sdhc card. I'm curious what happens with the various apps when you replace the card.

I'm pretty sure that if you mount both SD cards to your computer and copy everything from old to new, that the system has no problem carrying on with new card with more space. I have done this several times with Inspire 4G, did it once with Atrix 2 going from the stock 8 to a 16GB that I had, and will be doing it again soon with new 32GB.

So do I need to put the new card in and let the phone format it first or format it on the PC?
Let the phone format it, and then transfer the information to it. Good luck with the class 10 micro sd cards. People on the forum to include I are having issues with them. Supposedly going down to a class 4 and 6 will remove the problems the phone is having.
Taking pictures or recording video, the items will show up at as non readable. Everytime I take a pic the first pic is always bad, all of the others show up just fine. Gets annoying but i've managed to overcome it. Also when that happens all of the pictures you took after take a year to show up in the picture viewer. I have to reboot the device just to take a look at the ones I just shot.

i am using a sandisk 16 gb class 4 card that was really cheap on newegg with free shipping. i am not sure if the deal is still going on. there is a link below:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820171486
I copied what I posted in another thread.
My experience has been just the opposite. I originally purchased a 16gb class 4 PNY card and I had the aforementioned read only issues. I then exchanged it for a 16gb class 10 PNY and all has been good since. and that has been about 3 weeks ago. Go figure?
New Question:
Could it be that different manufactures arrive at various class standards using different architecture? Maybe the same class of card from one manufacturer can act differently then another manufacturer? I think ultimately that it shouldn't matter which card we use if the software/hardware is correct, we should be able to put any "reasonable" card we like in the phone and it should work. Hopefully Moto will issue an update so the phones wont be so picky. By the way I love my Atrix 2 and have no desire to get anything else.

Its not that simple. It depends on the hardware.....my HD camcorder for example, it specifically states that it needs at least a class 4 card, otherwise the info cant be written to the card as fast as it needs to be and will error out. Im sure something similar is at play here. But with Motorola not specifying what class card its compatible with it becomes a trial by error. So far the most common thing among the many people who have had this problem is the class 10 card.
Sent from my MB865 using XDA App
Yes I agree I have been playing with HD camcorders for a few years and I understand that the medium whether it is a card or a disc or tape needs to be able to keep up with data stream being sent to it. Im sure something similar is at play here as well but a faster card shouldn't give negative results? You are right that a camcorder has a "minimum" rating but although a faster card will not necessarily give any better performance it certainly shouldn't be worse or cause issues like it appears to on these phones.

Logical, but its not always like that. Example....in car audio, the head unit sends signal via rca's to an external amplifier, the higher voltage the signal, the more efficient the amp will be and the better it will sound. So logic will tell you if you can get an 8v signal to the amp then it should sound lovely since most signals are 1-2volts....well, if ur amp can only handle up to 6v signal then feeding it an 8v signal will cause the amp to go into protect mode and not work right.

I use HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool 2.1.8.0, based on recommendations on other xdadevelopers forums such as Inspire 4G. Supposedly does a more thorough format than the stock Windows 7 utility (certainly takes longer). Using this, I have had zero problem using Class 6 and Class 10 cards.

I had my hopes up for this to work... but sadly it does not. Using a PNY 16 gb class 10 card.
It's a bust on the Dane Elec class 10 card. It doesn't say what class it is at New Egg but has a prominent 10 in a circle. Turns out that is for the warranty. It's a class 2 card, goes back today. After reading all this I may step down to a class 4 or 6.
NewEgg has a class 4 32gb card for $41 shipped ordered that based on what I've read

This is actually a really good question
acording to this it should be able to use it up until 32 GB
and for bigger ones it need to use exFAT.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SDXC#SDXC
Linux systems that support SDHC cards also support SDXC cards, as long as the card contains a compatible file system. A proprietary driver is available for the exFAT file system.

There shouldn't be any problem with 64gb if it works on other phones. I doubt that it's hardware related.
Almost all the phones have the same specification about maximum sd size, and it's 32gb. The 64gb is new and the specification on the phones was written when the 64gb wasn't available.

Then the boys 3d optimus quietly supports 64gb?
no no no!!
look here!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038039
And this guy "3waygeek" blogged this further:
Well, I just got the SanDisk 64GB microSDXC. As I predicted, the SGS2 couldn't read the exFAT filesystem the card is formatted with. However, the SGS2 did format it as FAT32, and seems to accept it as a valid device.
I'm now copying my old 32GB card to the new 64GB, using standard USB microSDHC card readers on a Windows box. But before I did that, I ran SDTools on the microSDXC. Read speed 18 MB/s, write speed 6.6 MB/s; see the attached snapshot. Those numbers suggest to me that the device is the bottleneck, not the card.
So, aside from the lack of exFAT support, it looks like microSDXC will work. it works! just let ur phone RE-Format it to fat-32
hmm
I saw a post saying that 64gb had worked properly on LG-SU760, but I don't have any idea what sdxc is actually working well on Op3d...
It might depend on sd company.
see here it is available for Rs. 3455/- only!!!

If you're using maclaw's roms you can use a 64GB card.
I have a sandisk 16GB, no problem, good speed, works fine !
I have a Transcend 32GB, class 10, kind of like the one you had ozi5783. Bought it a few months ago, but if I knew then that I was going to use CyanogenMod, I would've waited a little bit longer, and bought a 64GB one. Not that I need that much space, but it would just be awesome to have... On the other hand, I guess that then I could store ALL of my favourite things (media) on it, and that's always handy.
Now, as far as I know, the stock phone supports "only" up to 32GB microSD, but like mauam said, with maclaw's roms you can use a 64GB card. Don't know if anyone tried it, though...
Btw, my card works nice and fast, no issues whatsoever... Very pleased.

Just to clear any possible doubt, I use a 64gb card
Well, I finnaly did a test with A1 SD benchmark, and this is the result. I use CM11 by maclaw.
Our phone doesn't support UHS speed, so I'll just buy a 64gb when I'll have the money.
I will try SD booster to see if I get different results and post some screenshots after.

I use a Samsung Pro 64gb uhs1.
Writing speed is about 10mbps and reading is 20mbps.
It works well on Maclaw's roms, but is not reconized on Stock rom.
I have a common 8 Gb, works fine with the Cyanogen 4.4.2. I don't think is worth buying a expensive one.
I have a Transcend 32gb and it works well specially on maclaws rom.
I'm using a Kingston 64 GB SD-XHC class 10 on Stock Rom, and even without root, I'm able to read it flawlessly :good:
I'm using a 32Gb Kingston external card and it's awesome!
I have a Kingston 8gb but I'm planning to buy a 32gb.
Does the size play role to the speed? I read that if you have an external SD card with big capacity, let's say 32gb, the speed would be slower if you compare it with an external SD card of 8gb. Is that true?
I lost my transcend 32gb class10 and I'm back to old 4gb class4 I lost many games

It depends on class of it not size of it like 4,6,10 obviously 10 is faster and we can use 6and 10 for expanding ram

I Have a Kinkston 16Gb HC Class 6 and in have 2048Kb for cache. It Works perfectly on Mclaws ROMs 10.1 & 10.2 and CM11
32GB Class 10's tend to work best for me.

64gb on stock rom? wow... first time i'm hearing this.
I have a noname 16gb right now, which works great but i am thinking about upgrading

SD cards

Recommendations would be most appreciated.
I got a SanDisk 128 GB and it has been working great so far.
The Samsung pro plus or sandisk extreme pro lines are what you are looking for. Enjoy

I would recommend you Samsung MicroSDXC 64GB PRO Memory Card. Also other Samsung cards are great.
Very good read/write speeds.
I put a Lexar 128 GB 1000x in my MXP and it is functioning great.
I'm considering purchase of this phone - sounds like support for a micro SDcard works well, so is there any benefit to buying the 64 or 32GB internal storage models vs. the 16GB model? I can capture video and do TWRP backups to the (relatively inexpensive) SDcard, so what am I missing on a cheaper 16GB phone?

Is the Moto X a UHS-I or UHS-II compatible host device? The extra cost of these higher-end sdcards would be wasted otherwise, correct?
Edit - I googled this topic and found this post: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/8cda627ead . In short, it confirms that the Moto X benefits from / takes advantage of a UHS-1 U3 microSD card. @EmperorX makes a good suggestion.
I still want to know if I really want to spend extra for a 32 or 64GB Moto X, given that I can buy a 32GB UHS-1 U3 card for US $15.
Both cards are UHS-I class U3
It does support uhs-1 from what I've read. We'll see, my wife's card gets here on Wed and I'll test out. Sandisk extreme pro.
Edit:
I see you've read what I read.

If there's a good Android M ROM available yet, see about formatting it as phone-specific "internal" storage... See: https://www.androidpit.com/android-m-release-date-news-features-name#performance

Problem
and what the maximum amount of the SD card can be used as system memory? I have a card to 64GB, and when you try to make it a system unit for a long time it formats, but it is empty and then says that the card is damaged, but if you use it like a regular card, it works fine and displays. Do not tell me what could be the problem?
device xt1575 android 6.0
how do the best microSD card options compare to internal storage (performance-wise)?

Can you report on the relative performance of your higher-end microSD card vs. the internal storage? For example:
compare the time it takes to do a TWRP backup of the whole phone to internal vs. the microSD card
Capture full QHD video directly to the microSD card
etc.
Thanks!

Unfortunately there was an error in shipping.... So we had to reorder and now are waiting until next week or as late as the 15th for it to arrive... Never had an issue like this with Amazon prime before.. Lmao.

Amazon has been really dropping the ball lately. I haven't had a package come on time in about a month or two, even with "guaranteed delivery by". Lol

Yup. Anyone splurge on a 200GB card yet?

I use a 32gb Samsung Pro+
I've got a generic 32gb class 10 and I have it as internal and its really laggy when I use Facebook, twitter etc so at the moment I just chuck my games on there. If I get a San disk extreme or pro will that eliminate the lag?

Maybe... But don't expect it to. Internal memory is much faster than even the fastest SD card. If you must use your SD card as internal storage for apps due to space, then move low usage apps to external card and heavy use ones to internal

I would like to know this too. There was some user who was successfully using a 200gb card in his phone. But since then I havent read of anyone else doing it. It would be great if we could use a 200gb card in our phone. Someone who is using it, kindly give your feedback.

Probably me, I have a Sandisk Ultra 200GB card. Works fine, no issues at all, ends up around 180GB usable. I've formatted it in both ext4 and exfat, both work fine. I did some benchmarks in another thread around here somewhere. Any questions, feel free.
